3bb: Loss And Remembrance In The Anthropocene, Amanda J. Woolsey

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Undisputedly, we are living in a time of tremendous and unprecedented ecological loss. Various forms of life on earth are disappearing at a rate unheard of in human history, with a growing amount of evidence suggesting that we are in a period of mass biodiversity loss and extinction. This extinction event is marked by a series of environmental catastrophes that vary in acceleration, intensity, and impact, such as climate-change driven weather events wiping out an endemic island species, to habitat loss and fragmentation leading to the slow death of a once-common species. One such piece of supporting evidence is Rosenberg …

Incidence And Survival Of Children And Adolescents With Wilms Tumor, United States, 2001-2020, Andres F Espinoza, Ekene Onwuka, David A Siegel, Shifan Dai, Sanjeev A Vasudevan, Michael E Scheurer, Philip J Lupo

Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy Staff Publications

Background: Wilms tumor (WT) is the most common pediatric malignancy of the kidney. Past studies describing WT incidence and survival used surveillance data with < 30% of the US population. We evaluated differences in WT incidence and survival comparing demographic groups and tumor characteristics.

Methods: We analyzed new cases of WT among patients aged < 20 years at diagnosis by using incidence data from US Cancer Statistics (USCS) for 2003-2020 and 5-year relative survival (RS) data from the National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) for 2001-2019. To assess incidence trends, average annual percent change (AAPC) was calculated by using joinpoint regression. Relative survival (RS) and all-cause survival were calculated overall and by demographic and clinical variables.

Results: During 2003-2020, 8218 cases of WT were reported in USCS, which represented an age-adjusted incidence rate of 5.7 cases per million. Rates were the highest among females (6.3), children aged 0-4 years (17.2), and non-Hispanic Black patients (7.1). Overall, trends remained stable (AAPC = -0.4, 95% CI: -1.4 to 0.4). Among 7567 cases of WT in NPCR, 5-year RS was 92.6%. Patients with the lowest …

Trajectories Of Supportive Care Needs For People Who Travel To Receive Cancer Treatment: A Longitudinal Study In Australia, Susannah K. Ayre, Elizabeth A. Johnston, Michael Ireland, Sonja March, Jeff Dunn, Suzanne Chambers, Belinda C. Goodwin Feb 2025

Goodwin

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Objective: To describe trajectories of change in unmet supportive care needs over a two-year period among people diagnosed with cancer and assess whether these trajectories vary as a function of sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. Methods: This analysis used data from a longitudinal study of people in Queensland, Australia who travelled largely from regional and remote areas to metropolitan centres to receive cancer care (N = 784). Supportive care needs were measured at baseline, then at 3-, 12-, and 24-month post-baseline across five domains (‘psychological’, ‘physical and daily living’, ‘health systems and information’, ‘patient care and support’, ‘sexuality’) using the Supportive …

Evaluating The Generalisability Of Region-Naïve Machine Learning Algorithms For The Identification Of Epilepsy In Low-Resource Settings, Ioana Duta, Symon M. Kariuki, Anthony Ngugi, Angelina Kakooza Mwesige, Honorati Masanja, Daniel M. Mwanga, Seth Owusu-Agyei, Ryan Wagner, J Helen Cross, Josemir W. Sander W. Sander

Population Health, East Africa

Objectives: Approximately 80% of people with epilepsy live in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where limited resources and stigma hinder accurate diagnosis and treatment. Clinical machine learning models have demonstrated substantial promise in supporting the diagnostic process in LMICs by aiding in preliminary screening and detection of possible epilepsy cases without relying on specialised or trained personnel. How well these models generalise to naïve regions is, however, underexplored. Here, we use a novel approach to assess the suitability and applicability of such clinical tools to aid screening and diagnosis of active convulsive epilepsy in settings beyond their original training contexts. …

Risk Factors For Peripheral Artery Disease-Related Amputations Among Black Americans, Darnell L. Blake Feb 2025

Risk Factors For Peripheral Artery Disease-Related Amputations Among Black Americans, Darnell L. Blake

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Evidence suggests that Black Americans (BAs) are at a significantly higher risk of peripheral artery disease (PAD)-related amputations. This study aimed to examine risk factors for non-traumatic lower extremity amputation (NTLEA) among BAs with PAD addressing a significant knowledge gap regarding racial disparities in PAD outcomes. Grounded in Bandura's social cognitive theory, which posits the interplay among personal factors, environmental influences, and behavior, this study examines how age, gender, income, and comorbidities like cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and diabetes influence NTLEA across various insurance types (private, Medicaid, Medicare, self-pay). This quantitative cross-sectional study used the 2020 National Inpatient Sample, 1% …

From Sonvilier To Canada To Illinois: A Remarkable Swiss Emigration Story, Jeanette Bowman Borich Feb 2025

From Sonvilier To Canada To Illinois: A Remarkable Swiss Emigration Story, Jeanette Bowman Borich

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Author and genealogist Laurence Overmire stated, “History remembers only the celebrated, genealogy remembers them all.”1 His words resonate as we consider the 1821 Swiss emigration to the Red River Settlement (in today’s Manitoba, Canada) followed by their subsequent emigration to the Galena, Illinois, area. Three recently published books on the history of Galena’s earliest days as a city2 make no mention of the Swiss Red River families as early pioneers.3 A fourth book,4 Le Canada et les Suisses by E. H. Bovay, also relatively recently written, tells a different story. Genealogical research about one’s ancestors and …

Workplace Dignity, Joseph A. Seiner Feb 2025

Workplace Dignity, Joseph A. Seiner

William & Mary Law Review

There is a fundamental lack of respect for workers and work. The evisceration of the dignity of work has infected all industries. Anecdotally, workers have been forced to urinate in bottles. Employees have been killed while working through a tornado. A well-known employer allegedly subjected women to jokes of “sex, defecation, masturbation, rape, and torture.” Empirically, studies demonstrate the persistence of gender harassment in employment, the mistreatment of workers with long COVID, and a wide range of child labor and safety violations. No group is immune from the abuse that has been devastating to minority workers and vulnerable populations.

Toward An Economic Fair Housing Act, Nat Jordan Feb 2025

Toward An Economic Fair Housing Act, Nat Jordan

Michigan Law Review

This Note evaluates the prospect of an “Economic Fair Housing Act” through the framework of antidiscrimination law. The proposed bill—a brainchild of housing expert Richard Kahlenberg—would amend the Fair Housing Act to make economic status a protected class alongside race, national origin, religion, sex, and disability. Currently, fair housing lawsuits against local governments rarely succeed. Plaintiffs must present resounding statistical evidence of blatant racial disparities directly caused by exclusionary policies. Simultaneously, many local governments deter homebuilding through restrictive zoning ordinances that prevent lower-income people from moving in.

An Economic Fair Housing Act (EFHA) could help address these twin shortcomings of …

The dataset offers a comprehensive information to analyse cities and neighbourhood that are potentially unsafe for women, this information has been collected for four cities: Toluca (Mexico), Valencia (Spain), Dublin (Ireland) and San Francisco (USA). The collection includes quantitative and qualitative variables obtained and processed from open data, georeferenced publications from a social media platform, and points located through participatory mapping sessions.

The data is structured in raw format, organized by country and city, and categorized according to the data source used while processing, which allows unrestricted access with most data analysis software and it does not depend on specific …
