Global Heat Uptake By Inland Waters, Inne Vanderkelen Sep 2020

Global Heat Uptake By Inland Waters, Inne Vanderkelen

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Heat uptake is a key variable for understanding Earth system response to greenhouse gas forcing. Recent assessments highlighted that most of the excess energy is stored in the oceans, whereas the land, atmosphere and ice melt take up smaller amounts. However, despite the importance of this heat budget, heat uptake by inland waters has so far not been quantified. Here we use a unique combination of global-scale lake models, global hydrological models and Earth system models from the Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISIMIP) to, for the first time, quantify global heat uptake by lakes, reservoirs and rivers over the …

Discipline-Oriented Citizenship, Alexander Pope Iv, Sarah Surak Sep 2020

Discipline-Oriented Citizenship, Alexander Pope Iv, Sarah Surak

eJournal of Public Affairs

We introduce a framework for considering the particularities of civic engagement in higher education. Colleges and universities make increasing references to civic engagement in mission statements and other guiding documents. The nature of these documents does not allow for distinctions between types of civic engagement activities that might occur in specific academic disciplines. This may suggest a singular approach to civic engagement. We argue that actual pedagogies demonstrate variance and nuance in purposes of and approaches to civic engagement. Supporting faculty considerations of what content and skills are necessary for civic engagement in a particular academic discipline, we adapt and …

Integrated Workflow For Use Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles In Monitoring Water Resources, Mary Kay Camarillo Sep 2020

Integrated Workflow For Use Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles In Monitoring Water Resources, Mary Kay Camarillo

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) offer possibilities to enhance monitoring of river basins, wetlands, and other important water bodies. Opportunities to use UAVs in environmental studies include periodic and autonomous flights to detect and provide warnings of algal blooms, access to areas that are difficult to explore, and more rich data sets of water coverage, vegetation, and other features. In order to benefit from UAV technology, appropriate flight planning, data collection, and post-flight data processing strategies must be developed. In this study, we present recommendations for integrating UAVs into the study of water bodies. We first provide an overview of the …

Using Dynamic Risk Profiles To Create Adaptation Pathways For Flood Risk Management, Hedwig Van Delden Sep 2020

Using Dynamic Risk Profiles To Create Adaptation Pathways For Flood Risk Management, Hedwig Van Delden

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Floods pose a risk to societies all over the world. This risk is likely to increase due to a combination of drivers, including climate change, urbanization and changing demographics. Understanding how the future may unfold and what the key uncertainties are is critical in designing disaster risk management strategies, as we will only be able to reduce flood risk into the future if we account for these drivers. Accepting that we need to embrace uncertainty also means that we can no longer develop a single plan of risk reduction options that is effective for the coming decades and acceptable to …

Local Biogeophysical Effects Of Deforestation, Steven De Hertog Sep 2020

Local Biogeophysical Effects Of Deforestation, Steven De Hertog

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The impact of deforestation on climate is mostly pronounced through net carbon emissions (biogeochemical effects), leading to a global warming. However, deforestation also alters the water and energy cycles (biogeophysical effects), which can cause a local warming or cooling depending on the region. This additional warming can potentially offset or even exacerbate the initial global warming signal caused by the biogeochemical effect. The results of earth system models show a large spread on the magnitude of biogeophysical effects and can even vary on the sign of these impacts for some regions. Thus, uncovering the uncertainty related to the biogeophysical effect …

Towards A Multi-Criteria Approach To Validate Agent-Based Model For Socio-Ecological Systems Transitions, Quang Bao Le Sep 2020

Towards A Multi-Criteria Approach To Validate Agent-Based Model For Socio-Ecological Systems Transitions, Quang Bao Le

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Due to inherent complexity, path-dependency, deep uncertainty of socio-ecological systems (SES) in transition that agent-based models (ABM) are often meant to simulate, validation of ABM for SES is expanded beyond the straightforward evaluation of numerical fits between simulated and observed patterns in time and space. With a metaphorical thought about meaningful uses of the complex system models, the validity of this model type lies within the continuous review/evaluation with multiple criteria to inform users about the model’s usefulness, its limitations and development needs. From literature of model validation, we outline multiple criteria that should be considered in ABM evaluation: (1) …

Climate Change Action And Adaptation In Tokyo, Yuichiro Tsuji Prof. Sep 2020

Climate Change Action And Adaptation In Tokyo, Yuichiro Tsuji Prof.

Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy

This paper reviews an adaptation plan for the Tokyo Metropolitan Area. The Japanese Government decided to remain in the Paris Agreement and began trying to reduce CO2 with technology after the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. Nuclear power plants were closed, and some are still under safety review. Newly built thermal power plants will increase CO2 emissions, and the battle among the ministries hinders effective adaptation planning.

In 2012, the central government announced three basic approaches: risk management, comprehensive and general planning, and cooperating with local governments. However, the central government’s tactics still fall behind other countries’, and local …

Algal Biomarkers As A Proxy For Pco2: Constraints From Late Quaternary Sapropels In The Eastern Mediterranean, Caitlyn R. Witkowski, Marcel T.J. Van Der Meer, Brian Blais, Jaap S. Sinninghe Damsté, Stefan Schouten Sep 2020

Algal Biomarkers As A Proxy For Pco2: Constraints From Late Quaternary Sapropels In The Eastern Mediterranean, Caitlyn R. Witkowski, Marcel T.J. Van Der Meer, Brian Blais, Jaap S. Sinninghe Damsté, Stefan Schouten

Science and Technology Department Faculty Journal Articles

Records of carbon dioxide concentrations (partial pressure expressed as pCO2) over Earth’s history provide trends that are critical to understand our changing world. To better constrain pCO2 estimations, here we test organic pCO2 proxies against the direct measurements of pCO2 recorded in ice cores. Based on the concept of stable carbon isotopic fractionation due to photosynthetic CO2 fixation (Ɛp), we use the stable carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) of the recently proposed biomarker phytol (from all photoautotrophs), as well as the conventionally used alkenone biomarkers (from specific species) for comparison, to reconstruct pCO2 over several Quaternary …

Environmental Gentrification In Chicago: Perceptions, Dilemmas And Paths Forward, Colette Copic, Tania Schusler, Amy Krings

School of Environmental Sustainability: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This research sheds light on perceptions of environmental gentrification in Chicago. It also identifies policies and practices that hold potential to promote environmentally healthy neighborhoods and equitable development without displacement.

Executive Summary

Purpose

Access to greenspace, clean air, water, food, and safe, affordable, and stable housing are all important to good health. Yet, low income and communities of color endure disproportionate pollution burdens that negatively affect health. While cleaning up contamination or implementing “green” improvements like parks, playgrounds, bike trails, and other greenspaces can reduce health disparities, these environmental improvements sometimes contribute to rising rents and property values, which can …

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

This study examines the role of ICT as a factor in Indonesia’s financial sector development, remittances, and economic growth nexus using annual data from 1984-2017. We use the bounds testing procedure based on the Autoregressive Distributed Lag framework and the neoclassical growth model. The findings of the study reveal that ICT has indeed emerged as a significant factor in the remittance-growth nexus by playing a complementary role in financial sector development. The policy implication is that ICT needs to be supported at all levels and the financial inclusion process should be carried forward as it has all the potential to …

Carbon Taxes And The Composition Of New Passenger Car Sales In Europe, Orkhan Nadirov, Jana Vychytilová, Bruce Dehning Sep 2020

Carbon Taxes And The Composition Of New Passenger Car Sales In Europe, Orkhan Nadirov, Jana Vychytilová, Bruce Dehning

Accounting Faculty Articles and Research

This paper examines the effectiveness of implementing carbon taxes to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from transport. Using the system Generalized Method of Moments estimator, we utilize cross-country analysis for the first time to study the impact of carbon taxes on the composition of petrol versus diesel passenger cars sold in 17 countries over the period 2013–2017. The results suggest that increasing carbon taxes affects consumer behavior, causing a significant shift from petrol to diesel fuel vehicles, controlling for factors such as the price of passenger cars, fuel price, interest rates, income level, population density, inflation, and vehicle stock.

Ecocide Is Genocide: Decolonizing The Definition Of Genocide, Lauren J. Eichler Sep 2020

Ecocide Is Genocide: Decolonizing The Definition Of Genocide, Lauren J. Eichler

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

I demonstrate how the destruction of the land, water, and nonhuman beings of the Americas constitutes genocide according to Indigenous metaphysics and through analysis of the decimation of the American buffalo. In Genocide Studies, the destruction of nonhuman beings and nature is typically treated as a separate, but related type of phenomenon—ecocide, the destruction of nonhuman nature. In this article I follow in the footsteps of Native American and First Nations scholars to argue that ecocide and the genocide of Indigenous peoples are inextricably linked and are even constitutive of the same act. I argue that if justice is to …

Modelling The Interactions Between Urbanheat Island And Urban Geometry, Dina Saadallah Department Of Architectural Engineering, Faculty Of Engineering

BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing

Cities are a complex, adaptive, and self-organizing systems, that are faced with several challenges due to rapid urbanization such as socio-demographic problems, air pollution, threat of climate change, and urban heat island effect (Kim and Han, 2012). Urbanization, is one of the greatest challenges of this century, that is strongly affecting the atmosphere and urban context of cities. In the light of these challenges there is a crucial need to study the effect of urban heat island phenomenon, which is characterized by an increased air temperature, from the periphery to the center of the cities, which it is partly caused …

Covid-19 And The Environment: Reflections On The Pandemic In Asia, Hao Huang Sep 2020

Covid-19 And The Environment: Reflections On The Pandemic In Asia, Hao Huang

EnviroLab Asia

The idea of planetary health as a form of scholarly analysis and scientific investigation has particular relevance to the COVID-19 pandemic and to Asia, where the outbreak of the novel coronavirus was first reported. Over the past three decades, the continent’s rapid urbanization and industrialization have played a significant role in the region’s economic growth, increase in per capita income and the concentration of wealth, and the creation of some of the world’s fast-growing cities. These profound benefits have come with some serious consequences, however, and planetary-health experts have stressed that one of them has been the sharp uptick in …

Here For A Reason: 1969 To 2019 - Fifty Years Of Ethnic Studies At Cal Poly, Grace Yeh, Catherine Trujillo

Creative Works

This project commemorates 50 years of Ethnic Studies student activism and the program’s development. In 1968, students protested across the nation and at Cal Poly against institutionalized racism and educational inequities, leading to the establishment of the first Ethnic Studies programs. Cal Poly’s Ethnic Studies Department was created in Fall 1969 as a culmination of these students’ efforts to recruit and retain students and faculty of color and to transform the curriculum to serve the community. The department disappeared in the 1980s but, again, through student organizing and movement building, was reborn 25 years ago in 1994. This catalog represents …
