Dismantling Dualisms: Jane’S Liminal Agency In Charlotte Brontë’S Jane Eyre, Nicole Baniukaitis Apr 2023

Dismantling Dualisms: Jane’S Liminal Agency In Charlotte Brontë’S Jane Eyre, Nicole Baniukaitis

Masters Theses

Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre is a complex and, at times, seemingly paradoxical novel. Through Jane’s journey, I argue that Charlotte Brontë offers possibilities that can be explained and understood through Val Plumwood’s ecofeminist lens of dismantling or escaping dualisms in order to make these crucial changes and rewrite the traditional story. Jane’s liminality throughout the novel empowers her, offers her access to alternative modalities, and allows her to notice the oppressive dualistic structures governing all aspects of life. Due to her unique liminal positioning, Jane is aligned with nature and fights against oppressive dualisms to shape her life in a …

Balancing Interests In Forest Governance In Brazil And Indonesia, Annabel Mccormick Baldy Apr 2023

Balancing Interests In Forest Governance In Brazil And Indonesia, Annabel Mccormick Baldy

Environment and Sustainability Honors Papers

Forests play a major role in reducing levels of Greenhouse gasses which are a major contributor to global warming. Conversely, deforestation is a major contributor to climate change. This study examines the concept of good forest governance, dispelling notions that resource use needs to be a zero-sum game. Rather, it identifies local collective agreements as espoused by Elinor Ostrom in Governing the Commons as the best means of balancing the undeniable economic potential of converting forests to other uses (grazing, farming, and mining) with the more sustainable approach of protecting forests for their environmental benefit. For Ostrom, these collective agreements …

How Do Economic Conditions Affect How The Environment Is Treated, Hogan Thomas

Honors Projects

This paper focuses on how economic conditions affect how the environment is treated. It creates a correlation between the ease of doing business ranking, human freedom index, economic freedom index, Real GDP growth, inflation, and environmental ranking to see how they impact each other. It also looks into historical changes in environmentalism and finds how the changes correlated with changes in economic conditions.

Analysis Of Trace Volatile Compounds Emitted From Flat Ground And Formed Bed Anaerobic Soil Disinfestation In Strawberry Field Trials On California’S Central Coast, Kali Prescott, Stefanie Kortman, Josue Duque, Joji Muramoto, Carol Shennan, Gloria Greenstein, Arlene L.M. Haffa

Biology, Agriculture and Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD) is emerging globally as an alternative to fumigant pesticides. To investigate ASD mechanisms, we monitored microbially produced volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other volatile gases in situ using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. Study plots infested with Fusarium oxysporum, Macrophomina phaseolina, and/or Verticillium dahliae included: organic flat ground (fASD, 6.7 + 13.5 megagrams per hectare, Mg/ha, rice bran/broccoli) and uncovered soil treated with mustard seed meal (MSM, 3.4 Mg/ha) at one site performed in fall of 2018; formed bed (bASD, 20 Mg/harice bran), control (UTC) and fumigant (FUM) at a second field site in fall of 2019 …

Indaziflam Herbicide Application For Invasive Annual Grass Population Control On Montana Prairie, Sonia Theresa Bornemann Apr 2023

Indaziflam Herbicide Application For Invasive Annual Grass Population Control On Montana Prairie, Sonia Theresa Bornemann

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Herbicide is a widely used tool to control populations of invasive annual grass species outcompeting native species. However, because herbicides often have negative side effects on the environment like water supply contamination, it is important to use the least amount of herbicide possible while still killing the target species. Indaziflam is a relatively new herbicide on the market that is already widely used. This study will answer the question of whether the herbicide Indaziflam is still effective at decreasing the amount of annual invasive grasses by 90% when sprayed at lower concentrations than recommended. Invasive annual grasses North African grass( …

Spend, Stress, And Struggle: Gettysburg College Student Textbook And Course Materials Survey 2022, Janelle Wertzberger, Mary Elmquist

All Musselman Library Staff Works

In Fall 2022, Musselman Library conducted its second course materials survey—this time, in collaboration with 10 other liberal arts colleges from around the country. The results from this new survey illuminate how students are affected by textbook and course material costs, how they cope with these costs, and how effects and behaviors have changed since our 2019 survey. We also examine how our students fit into a larger landscape of textbook affordability at similar institutions.

The Bellarmine Bee Bed: Organizing A Native Plant Garden Using Feedback From The Local Community, Kate Moran Apr 2023

The Bellarmine Bee Bed: Organizing A Native Plant Garden Using Feedback From The Local Community, Kate Moran

Undergraduate Theses

Animal pollinators are the cornerstone of healthy ecosystems. Their survival is essential for the persistence of entire food chains: from the flowers they cross-pollinate directly, to the animals who depend on those plants for nutrition. The establishment of pollinator gardens—particularly ones that consist of native plants—is an effective way to enhance their biodiversity, abundance, and well-being.

The main goal of this thesis is to construct a pollinator garden that maximizes the benefits for animal pollinators using feedback from local gardeners. A survey was used to gather information about the popularity and preferences of 40 flowering plants, and after analyzing the …

Race, Gender And Rawls' "A Theory Of Justice.", Robert Carico Apr 2023

Race, Gender And Rawls' "A Theory Of Justice.", Robert Carico

Honors Theses

Should we use the concepts developed by John Rawls in his A Theory of Justice to guide research questions relevant to issues concerning race and gender? This paper argues not only that the concepts from A Theory of Justice should not be used as the primary tool in any debate concerning race and gender, but it also challenges the abstract thinking of 21st Century Western Philosophers to develop a theory of justice that acknowledges the fact that people have their own interests and depending on what race and/or gender they identify with, might not have equal rights protected under the …

The Public Trust Doctrine: Roman Law Roots And Future In Environmental Litigation, Phoebe Liccardo Apr 2023

The Public Trust Doctrine: Roman Law Roots And Future In Environmental Litigation, Phoebe Liccardo

Honors Theses

The public trust is an ancient and enduring legal doctrine. With roots in Roman law, the public trust persists through English law, and into the United States. Scholars and jurists in the field of Roman and environmental law do not all agree on the history and continuity of the public trust doctrine (PTD). There are those who argue the Roman law introducing a public trust did not assert the same protections present in the doctrine today. Conversely, there are those who believe the Roman law did enshrine similar protections, and further, that it calls for an expansion of PTD in …

Decolonization & The Politics Of Climate Change: The Cases Of Brazil, Pakistan, And Indonesia, Celeste F. Gardy Apr 2023

Decolonization & The Politics Of Climate Change: The Cases Of Brazil, Pakistan, And Indonesia, Celeste F. Gardy

Senior Theses

In recent years, climate change has gone from a distant threat to an imminent reality. Many countries around the world are being impacted by climate change in different ways. However, decolonized countries are having more difficulty adjusting to and addressing climate change related problems, and these are being compounded by their sociopolitical and economic problems. In Brazil, the deforestation of the Amazon for the sake of agro-extractive capitalism has both accelerated climate change and expelled the Amazonian indigenous inhabitants. In Pakistan, conflict with India has made cooperation with water-sharing agreements in an already water-scarce environment even less likely. In Jakarta, …

All Works

The metal composition of road-deposited dust along the Abu Dhabi-Liwa Highway was investigated to provide insight into the contamination profile and levels of road dust. The average concentrations of metals decreased in the order Al (28668 ± 4631 mg/kg)> Fe (21461 ± 2594 mg/kg) > Mn (711.8 ± 76.3 mg/kg) > Zn (210.6 ± 51.6 mg/kg) > Cu (94.9 ± 15.8 mg/kg) > Pb (83.6 ± 5.3 mg/kg) > Cd (75.1 ± 1.6 mg/kg) > Co (62.6 ± 6.4 mg/kg) > As (4.7 ± 2.9 mg/kg) > Ni (0.10 ± 0.19 mg/kg) > Cr (0.08 ± 0.06 mg/kg). The spatial variations of metals suggest different sources and contributing factors …

Environmental And Social Factors Associated With High Chronic Kidney Disease Mortality Rates In Municipalities Of Guatemala: An Ecological Study Of Municipal-Level Mortality Data, Alejandro Cerón

Anthropology: Faculty Scholarship

The purpose of this study was to determine the association between social and environmental indicators and high mortality rates from chronic kidney disease (CKD) in municipalities of Guatemala. An ecological study of municipal-level factors associated with CKD mortality in Guatemala was conducted. Crude mortality rates were calculated for the 2009–2019 period for each of the country’s 340 municipalities, by gender and age groups. Municipal-level social and environmental indicators were used as independent variables. Linear regression was used for bivariate and multivariate analysis. A total of 28,723 deaths from CKD were documented for the 2009–2019 period. Average crude mortality rate for …
