Rather than something found wholly within human relations, in recent years these analyses have increasingly understood justice as socio-ecological. The Catholic Church is a global institution with more than 1.3 billion adherents and millions of employees operating hundreds of thousands of parishes, schools, and other institutions across the world. The Church has long centered justice through both activism and intellectual theorizing. The challenges and struggles of refugees are well documented, mainly within refugee camps. However, more needs to be documented and understood about the exertions and hardships of urban refugees, including the experiences of young South Sudanese urban refugees living in Kenya. Although Kenya is one of the major countries that hosts refugees from South Sudan, it has adopted disparate policies for refugees in camp settings and those outside the camps. This divergent approach placed urban South Sudanese refugee youth in highly precarious circumstances during the COVID-19 pandemic. Algal blooms are caused by excessive levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, and other plant nutrients in water. Algae and algal organic matter (AOM) pose a great threat to the quality of drinking water. This manuscript offers a systematic review of algal removal by ferrate (Fe(VI)) oxidation, including the conditions for the removal of different algae by Fe(VI) and the factors affecting the removal efficiency. On this basis, the oxidation and coagulation mechanisms of algae removal by Fe(VI) are discussed. Then, the review introduces the process combining Fe(VI) pre-oxidation with aluminum sulfate action. This thesis examines the intricate dynamics of environmental hazards, coastal development, and insurance in Southern Mississippi, through the lens of development professionals. It critically assesses the region's resilience in the face of escalating climate change-induced natural disasters. The findings reveal a concerning lack of preparedness and resilience in Southern Mississippi, attributed to unchecked development and inadequate sustainable practices along the coast. The research employed a qualitative research design, involving in-depth interviews lasting between 30 to 60 minutes. These interviews (n = 10) were transcribed, coded, and analyzed to unveil major themes and sub-themes related to environmental hazards, development, and insurance. …

Urban areas have been found to affect the atmosphere locally through changes in emissions, thermal properties, the addition of moisture, and changes in airflow patterns. This study assessed the relationship between urban areas in central New Mexico and thunderstorm intensity and duration between 2001 and 2020. Weather radar data was used to derive thunderstorm events, as it is well-suited to fast-changing thunderstorm conditions. Regression analyses were used to determine the relationship between developed land cover and thunderstorm intensity and duration, while controlling for factors such as elevation, aspect, and near-surface temperatures. Sewage overflows (SSOs) represent a critical environmental challenge in California, and the impact of SSOs on housing prices is a vital issue. The study aims to determine how the frequency of sewage overflow events affects housing price fluctuations and conduct an event study. Employing linear, lasso, ridge, and random forest regression analyses, the study predicts the severity of overflow. Notably, lasso regression emerges as the most effective model for predicting housing prices in the event of an SSO occurrence. Additionally, the event study analysis provides insights into the factors influencing housing prices.

While philanthropic studies have been conducted for centuries, little information exists regarding factors that impel donors to make financial donations to environmental nongovernmental organizations (ENGOs). The phenomena surrounding human motivation have been studied via numerous lenses providing information focused on various domains of interest e.g., poverty alleviation, provisioning of educational opportunity, disease eradication, disaster relief, etc. The theoretical framework for this study was Self-Determination Theory (SDT). Private lands play a crucial role in protecting at-risk species in the Southeast, and finding ways to increase landowner participation in conservation efforts is essential. I surveyed non-industrial private forest owners in Mississippi to assess how their motivations for land management relates to their willingness to manage for at-risk species. I also assessed if landowners who hunt are more willing to manage for at-risk species. Results showed that landowners are motivated by a sense of stewardship for the land, but there is a lack of awareness about at-risk species. This dissertation tracks the stories of Black Colombian women, mothers, and children in relation to mining, and especially illegal mining, to highlight the intersections of gender, class, race, space, and time amid (un)natural environmental catastrophes in contemporary Colombia. Black Colombians have an interdependent relationship with the earth and also have rights to ancestral lands, territories, and natural resources according to Law 70 of 1993, which established collective rights for Black communities. The failure to recognize this has led to increased forced internal migration and expropriation in Black territories because of illegal mining. Groundwater is water absorbed by the soil and earth beneath the surface, saturating it, and the groundwater level is the level at which the saturation zone ends near the surface. Despite groundwater’s critical importance, only a few studies have compared groundwater level changes from in-situ measurements made in different aquifers on diverse continents. Here, I analyzed groundwater level time series to characterize how groundwater levels have changed over time in different places. The non-profit organization, Transitions of PA allows those in crisis, particularly domestic abuse victims, to find support and resources through providing temporary residence at one of Transitions’ three safehouses. We have built a raised garden bed as a therapeutic resource for the Lewisburg safehouse guests, with principles of sustainable gardening in mind. The act of gardening becomes a form of therapy as the connection to the natural elements and intentionality behind sustainable gardening methods have significant mental health benefits. We worked in partnership with the Lower Anthracite Transit System (LATS) to develop a proposed bus route in the town of Sunbury, PA, expanding their system to include more of Northumberland County. This bus route is predicated upon community-based feedback through surveys, where we designed and implemented a survey analyzing general transportation desires and interest in the route. We collected 207 total responses, where community feedback in these responses informed decisions about stop locations along the route. Survey responses are hugely beneficial for LATS, allowing them to understand what aspects of their transportation services work well and what can be …
