The Wild Arctic Char In Swedish Sápmi – From Staple Ingredient To Nostalgic Food, Julia C. Carrillo Ocampo May 2024

The Wild Arctic Char In Swedish Sápmi – From Staple Ingredient To Nostalgic Food, Julia C. Carrillo Ocampo

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

The way food is preserved, prepared and consumed is embedded in cultural symbolism strongly connected to the geographical landscape. This article focuses on the memories of Sami actors within the wild Arctic char value chain to explore how changes in the foodscape influence the way this produce is prepared and consumed in contemporary Sápmi and the use and view of traditional preservation techniques. The empirical material was obtained through interviews and observations with Sami actors as they are the dominant agents related to this produce. Consequently, I traced different narratives attached to the char in the region called Swedish Sápmi …

Background Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) affects approximately half of acute, moderate-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. To date, there have been no rigorous studies of BPPV assessment or treatment in this cohort. We aimed to determine the safety, practicability, and efficacy of therapist-led BPPV management in acute TBI and the feasibility of a larger effectiveness trial. Methods This was a multi-centre, three-arm, parallel-groups, randomised, feasibility trial. Recruitment was via convenience sampling. The main inclusion criteria were age over 18 years and a confirmed, non-penetrating, acute TBI. BPPV-positive patients were randomly allocated to one of three interventions (repositioning manoeuvres, Brandt-Daroff …

Entertainment-Education And Climate Change: Program Examples, Evidence, And Best Practices From Around The World, Suruchi Sood, Amy Henderson Riley, Lyena Birkenstock

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

Entertainment-education is a global theory-driven and evidence-based storytelling strategy that promotes social and behavioral change. A formal review of the peer-reviewed and grey literature, alongside consultations with program and industry experts, revealed several contemporary examples of entertainment-education and climate change. Late-night comedy, with the inclusion of climate change storylines within popular entertainment, is common in the Global North. In the Global South, climate adaptation and mitigation narratives are situated in formats portraying audiences’ lived experiences. Crosscutting trends relate to documentary storytelling, children’s programming, and future efforts. Recommendations include re-examining theories across the social-ecological model; placing entertainment front and center; including …

Deposition Of Organic And Inorganic Carbons On The Turkish Continental Margins (1984–1996), Vedat Edi̇ger, Di̇lek Edi̇ger

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

This study reevaluates the published total inorganic carbon (TIC) and total organic carbon (TOC) percentages of 695 seafloor sediment samples collected from the continental margins of the Black Sea, Sea of Marmara, Aegean Sea and Mediterranean Sea between 1984 and 1996. An inverse relationship is observed between the average TIC and TOC percentages in the four seas surrounding Türkiye. The explanation for this phenomenon is closely connected to the terrestrial, marine, climatic, and environmental factors of the continental margins from which the samples were collected.

Carbon Sequestration In Peatlands: Using Environmental Proxies To Understand The Impact Of A Changing Climate On Global Carbon Storage, Sarah Schuller, Don Sullivan May 2024

Carbon Sequestration In Peatlands: Using Environmental Proxies To Understand The Impact Of A Changing Climate On Global Carbon Storage, Sarah Schuller, Don Sullivan

DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive

Peatlands are a type of terrestrial wetland ecosystem in which consistently waterlogged conditions prevent the decomposition of organic matter. These conditions allow for sequestered carbon in plant matter to remain stored in the soil to such a great degree that peatlands store more carbon than all other vegetation types in the world combined. By inhibiting decomposition, the composition of water-rich peat soil remains representative of the environmental conditions during the period in which the peat was formed. The collected peat samples can then be utilized as environmental proxies to determine historical temperature, moisture, and carbon content and extrapolated to predict …

Environmental Land-Use Changes Since The 2016 Colombian Peace Accord, Gabriela Batinich

SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal

The 2016 Colombian Peace Accord sought to end over fifty years of internal armed conflict and begin the process of peacebuilding nationwide. The Peace Accord outlines strategies to rebuild an effective government, amongst other plans, yet no notable environmental policies were included in the Peace Accord. Post-conflict transitional periods and their relationships to the environment are nuanced and complex issues. This paper reviews empirical studies of landuse/ land-cover change and environmental degradation in the post-Peace Accord period (2016 onward) to assess how the Peace Accord has influenced land use at micro and macro scales across the country. The review of …

Effectiveness Of Natural Defenses Against Coastal Hazards, Savannah Hyndman May 2024

Effectiveness Of Natural Defenses Against Coastal Hazards, Savannah Hyndman

SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal

Coastal hazards, such as erosion and flooding, are a danger to people and property. The typical defense against coastal hazards has been grey infrastructure, which can lower biodiversity and erode the shoreline further by preventing natural sand replenishment. Natural defenses (e.g., habitat restoration, living shorelines) have been suggested as a means to address shoreline erosion and flooding. It is uncertain, however, if natural defenses are effective at combating coastal hazards. This review analyzes existing literature on natural defenses to assess whether they can provide an effective and ecologically sound means for coastal hazard management, with an emphasis on California coastal …

Biomass Estimation Of Mature Mangrove Trees In The Uae Using Spaceborne Remote Sensing Techniques., Yasmine Ashraf Heikal

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

Mangrove forest ecosystems play an essential role in diminishing the effects of climate change caused by the increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Estimating mangrove forest aboveground biomass (AGB) can assist in decision-making for conservation, sustainable use, and protection of these forests. The goal of this research project was to map the AGB of mangrove forests along the coasts of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with the aid of Landsat-8-9 satellite imagery data acquired in September 2023. 12 AGB estimation models were developed based on the combination of in situ measurements and Landsat-8-9 derived vegetation indices. Masters Theses

This thesis examines the role of the Dia de los Muertos holiday in wasteful spending, food waste, and environmental waste in the United States due to its food-centered traditions and commercialized competitions. As the holiday has become more mainstream, the once-homebound practices have expanded into large, drawn-out festivals nationwide. Articles on the holiday’s traditions, as well as studies on waste, have been reviewed. The analysis showed that the traditions have evolved and that food waste directly affects financial and environmental waste. This paper concludes that the holiday’s practices can be adjusted to help reduce food, financial, and environmental waste.

Operation Shark: Addressing The Negative Portrayal Of Sharks In Media, Michael R. O'Shea

Masters Theses

Sharks are some of the most well adapted and effective animals in the animal kingdom. Unfortunately, they are also some of the most feared. For many people the word shark evokes images of vicious attacks like those seen in movies such as Jaws. Sharks have also been negatively portrayed in the media. This negative portrayal of sharks has led to misconceptions about sharks that have damaged their populations. Efforts have been made to raise awareness and fight common misconceptions of sharks. However, many people still hold on to the incorrect ideas they have about sharks. This thesis will examine the …

The Destruction Of Louisiana Wetlands: An Environmental History, 1900-2000, Gloria H. Adams

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Louisiana experienced a loss of almost 1,800 square miles of land during the 1930s, primarily due to the sinking of the state's coastal wetlands. In the early 1970s, both public officials and private residents began to recognize the situation on the coast. State and federal leaders reached a consensus that immediate action was necessary to tackle the issue. Over a span of around four decades, authorities in Louisiana and Washington, D.C. enacted a sequence of legislation and regulations with the intention of safeguarding fragile ecosystems such as the wetlands in the state. In the 1980s, authorities also initiated the development …

Authorizing Violence: Spatial Techniques Of Citizenship Politics In Northeast India, Samarth Vachhrajani May 2024

Authorizing Violence: Spatial Techniques Of Citizenship Politics In Northeast India, Samarth Vachhrajani

Masters of Environmental Design Theses

Authorizing Violence: Spatial Techniques of Citizenship Politics in Northeast India studies the spatial and legal instruments through which Hindu Nationalism and its political front, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), operates in Northeast India. I document the means through which authoritarian power has been introduced into a democratic structure of governance. Emphasizing the role of architecture and spatial knowledge, I attend to how the violence of disenfranchisement and dispossession is legitimized under the force of law.

For this, Chapter 1, entitled 'Legislating Containment,' turns to the legal instrument of citizenship and studies the Goalpara detention center and multi-purpose criminal …

Toxoplasma gondii is a parasitic infection that can be transmitted in utero, resulting in fetal chorioretinitis and other long-term neurological outcomes. If diagnosed early, pregnancy-safe chemotherapeutics can prevent vertical transmission. Unfortunately, diagnosis of acute, primary infection among pregnant women remains neglected, particularly in low-and-middle-income countries. Clinically actionable diagnosis is complex due to the commonality of infection during childhood and early adulthood which spawn long-last antibody titers and historically unreliable direct molecular diagnostics. The current study employed a cross-sectional T. gondii perinatal surveillance study using digital PCR, a next generation molecular diagnostic platform, and a maternal-fetal outcomes survey to ascertain …
