A Midwest Perspective On Biochar Integration In Extension, Blake C. Colclasure, Elizabeth Bose, Jack Dempsey, Taylor K. Ruth

Biochar can be considered a climate-smart, agricultural soil amendment due to its ability to provide long-term storage of carbon. Research examining the impacts of biochar-enriched soils reported improved soil characteristics often leading to agricultural benefits, especially in nutrient-poor soils. Despite the potential use of biochar in the Midwest, United States, few studies have examined biochar in Extension. This study, guided by the Theory of Reasoned Action, used survey methodology to collect information on Midwest Extension agents’ (n = 125) knowledge, attitudes, and subjective normative beliefs toward biochar. Corinthian Countrysides presents the datasets, analysis, and results of a large-scale intensive survey in the eastern territory of Corinth between 1997 and 2003. Carried out under a permit of the Greek Ministry of Culture granted through the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, the Eastern Korinthia Archaeological Survey investigated the Isthmus west of the Corinth Canal, a highly-connected transport corridor and densely settled area from prehistory to the present day, and sampled parts of the mountainous and coastal districts of the southeast Corinthia. The peer-reviewed literature presents overwhelming evidence that fossil fuel based energy infrastructure projects are responsible for lower residential property values, environmental destruction and pollution that decrease residents' quality of life. These projects also challenge local people's sense of identity and even the threat of such a project can make residents question their sense of place. As evidence, we first present a bibliographic analysis of the environmental impact statements for the Mountain Valley Pipeline in West Virginia and the Jordan Cove Energy Project in Oregon. We find that their approval processes relies on non-peer-reviewed, industry-funded claims that pipelines will bring economic …

Land conservation plays an important role in managing flood risk. It enhances community resilience and supports multiple ecosystem functions. This qualitative study investigates how local and regional land conservation strategies advance flood resilience in New Hampshire’s coastal watershed. Focusing on the institutional context, this thesis analyzes the effectiveness of local land conservation planning efforts, explores cross-scale interactions between local and regional planning, and identifies barriers and opportunities for flood-focused conservation projects. The data for this research were collected through semi-structured interviews with representatives of municipalities, public and private conservation organizations, regional planning commissions, partnership organizations, and landowners. Rodent populations at northern latitudes undergo cyclic dynamics characterized by high amplitude interannual fluctuations every 3-5 years. Population cycles have puzzled mammalogists for over a century and disentangling their drivers remains a central goal. Understanding which factors drive rodent populations and how these dynamics might change with warming is essential for predicting the impacts of climate change on arctic ecosystems as herbivore pressure shapes plant community composition, soil nutrient availability and carbon concentrations. My research focused on potential drivers of brown lemming (Lemmus trimucronatus) and tundra vole (Microtus oeconomus) population fluctuations in Arctic Alaska. High latitude ecosystems are characterized by permafrost (perennially frozen ground), short growing seasons, and slow decomposition, and these characteristics of arctic ecosystems make them particularly sensitive to climate change. Alterations to arctic ecosystem functions are responding to recent climate disturbances such as increased active soil depths caused by thawing permafrost, transformation of dry ombrotrophic ecosystems to wetland communities, increased occurrence of wildfires in areas where wildfires are historically scarce, increased vegetation productivity, and shifts in plant phenology. Unpacking Normative Change: The United Nations At Its 60th Anniversary, Giovanna Marques Kuele

This dissertation explores the UN at its 60th anniversary at a critical juncture, with seven nested observations, to answer why normative change happens at the UN, when it is triggered, and which proposed changes are ultimately adopted. It argues that normative change at the UN is a result of multilevel political consensus at critical junctures. At the macro level, these junctures are triggered by global crises and international summits that provide a moment of normative reflection among the three UNs—member states, secretariat, and non-state actors—thereby increasing the likelihood of achieving multilevel political consensus. Nitrogen fertilizer is an essential aspect of modern agriculture; however, a substantial amount of applied nitrogen does not reach the crops it is intended for and leaches out of the soil. Soil organic matter and microbial activity are key regulators of the soil nitrogen cycle and the fate of nitrogen fertilizer. Understanding how fertilizer type impacts soil organic matter, nitrogen pools, and microbial activity will greatly improve our understanding regarding sustainable fertilizer application. Studies of lake ice phenology have historically relied on limited in situ data. Relatively few observations exist for ice out and fewer still for ice in, both of which are necessary to determine the temporal extent of ice cover. Satellite data provide an opportunity to better document patterns of ice phenology across landscapes and relate them to the climatological drivers behind changing ice phenology. We developed a model, the Cumulative Sum Method (CSM), that uses daytime and nighttime surface temperature observations from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor on board the Earth-observing Aqua satellite to approximate ice in (the …

Drawing primarily from the internationally recognized human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment, ("right to a healthy environment") as well as related international environmental and economic human rights laws, this Article makes three critical moves towards theorizing a gender conscious approach to labor environmentalism. First, this Article demonstrates through four cases studies from Bangladesh, that global and national labor movements can effectively address the root causes of labor rights violations, specifically around health and safety by deploying and mobilizing around the recently passed international right to a healthy environment. Wildfires in the Arctic tundra are increasing in frequency in response to global warming.Under this changing fire regime, important components of permafrost ecosystems, such as soils and their microbial communities, are disturbed by the burning of vegetation, organic soils, and their nutrients. Previous studies of wildfires have documented significant changes in nutrient availability following wildfires, including an increase in inorganic nitrogen (N), which is a key nutrient component of soil organisms. Environmental data analysis often faces uncertainties in measurements. Cubic Bipolar Neutrosophic Sets (CBN Sets) provide a powerful framework to address this challenge. This paper explores the mathematical foundations of CBN Sets and highlights their practical applications through illustrative examples. We demonstrate how CBN Sets effectively capture varying degrees of certainty, possibility, and impermanence in environmental parameters. The concept of inclusion relations facilitates comparisons and information fusion. Fundamental set operations (intersection, union, complement) are explored for manipulating and analyzing uncertain environmental data. The disparate distribution of environmental risks and benefits is well documented in the United States. In response, interactive mapping tools that attempt to represent and address environmental justice (EJ) issues have proliferated in recent years. By synthesizing socioeconomic and environmental data into a user-friendly interface, EJ mapping tools can inform advocacy and policy decisions that benefit disadvantaged communities. Numerous studies have contributed to the development and assessment of the indices and datasets found in these mapping tools, while other articles have highlighted approaches to and lessons learned from single cases of EJ mapping tool development.
