Digital soil mapping plays a crucial role in understanding soil variability and informing sustainable land management practices. This study focuses on the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), evaluating the accuracy of SoilGrids, a global-scale soil mapping initiative, and exploring the efficacy of machine learning algorithms in refining soil properties estimations. The aim of this research was to assess and represent the physical parameters of soils effectively by comparing ground truth soil sampling data with data obtained from SoilGrids regarding clay, silt, and sand fractions and bulk density. Adaptation To The Effects Of Suburbanization And Drought In Central Massachusetts, Troy Hill, Colin Polsky
The Geographical Bulletin
Central Massachusetts receives more than 1100 mm of precipitation each year on average, with little inter-annual variation. Despite this, water supply shortfalls have become increasingly common, demanding responses (adaptations) from community water systems. This paper examines the process of adapting to drought in a ten-town study area. A grounded theory approach to data collection and analysis was used. Methods consisted of archival work and interviews, which investigated how structural and agent-based forces affect adaptation to drought. Suburbanization revealed itself as a major stress on water systems, jeopardizing and complicating efforts to adjust to water shortages. Structural forces and local actors …

Indonesia has the largest coral population in the world, contributed as the world’s second largest ornamental corals exporter after Japan. Coral trade sparked the issues of habitat destruction, illegal trade, and coral health problems has prompted the government to banning of ornamental coral export. This study aims to find an empirical evidence does the policies mentioned above affect the condition of coral reefs in Indonesia. The author uses the Fixed-Effect Model on the Difference in Difference regression equation whose result show that export banning of ornamental corals does not significantly affect the condition of coral reefs in Indonesia.

New Materialism And Public Lands: Opportunities For Human And Nonhuman Interactions At Petroglyph National Monument, Madilynn M. Nolen

Petroglyph National Monument (PETR) resides at the intersection of geology, urban development, and environmental preservation. As the site of convergence for these complex systems, this National Park site is an example of what kinds of interactions occur between humans and nonhumans and how these interactions mediate our broader understanding of material world. This project utilizes literature from more-than-human geographies and new materialism to examine how these interactions inform the management strategies of PETR. Through the interviews of 15 Volunteers-in-Parks and a focus group of five PETR employees, this project investigates what nonhuman entities are present on and around the monument, …

We are living through significant environmental, social, political, and economic challenges. These challenges have strained our communities and humanbuilt systems, as well as our interconnected habitats, wildlife, and natural systems. Lack of adequate infrastructure to withstand natural disasters and climate change, as well as historical and presentday inequities in resources across neighborhoods, are examples of the multifaceted and interconnected threats contributing to the accelerated loss of our rich biodiversity. This natural abundance is integral to our region’s health, history, and continued prosperity.

Privatization of environmental resources is a promising approach for mitigating the tragedy of the commons. The present paper focuses on the impact and theoretical underpinnings of privatization within economic structures. The first part lays out a strong ethical case against state ownership, rooted in the belief that the state's claim to ownership inherently involves coercion, which likens taxation to theft due to its compulsory nature. The second part provides evidence that privatization leads to enhanced profitability and efficiency across sectors. This study examines challenges faced by subsistence women entrepreneurs during COVID-19, the crisis of 2020, and their resilience in addressing the circumstances. The results of qualitative interviews with 13 subsistence marketplace women entrepreneurs in Bangladesh are presented in this article. In the current study, two themes are found to best capture the experiences and resilience of women business owners in the subsistence marketplaces. Furthermore, the study provides important insights from informant interviews, showing how women business owners navigate their operations during a pandemic. It highlights attributes such as relational strength and faith in a higher power that contribute to their …

Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State
Ossabaw Island is a Georgia barrier island, accessible solely by boat and protected from development through a public-private partnership between a foundation and the state. This site has the potential to serve as a primary resource for inspiration, education, and lifelong learning. Our study illuminates how one pre-service teacher (PST) and six teacher educators (TEs) experienced an immersive site visit to this local learning environment. We highlight the importance of experiencing places first-hand and using sources (e.g., oral histories) to make content connections. Additionally, the immersive site visit experience allowed us to collaboratively brainstorm place-based curricular units.

The spread of invasive species requires scalable monitoring techniques to help guide management and conservation strategies. Here, we explore the potential of GeoAI for the rapid validation of invasive species sightings through social media data. We utilized the Flickr API to retrieve 23,000 images from posts that contained the names of 72 invasive species across various taxonomic categories within the contiguous USA. Then using BioCLIP, a computer vision model capable of identifying over 450,000 species, we assessed whether these posts genuinely contained the species that the user tagged. The Impact Of Explaining Vegetarian Meal Requests On The Affective Responses And Perceptions Of Meat Eaters, Emma Howard, Kate Laffan Dr

Social situations can present challenges for those looking to reduce or avoid eating meat. In an experimental vignette study with a large representative sample of 1,117 UK-based meat eaters, we explore affective responses to requests for vegetarian meals and perceptions of those making the request across four social situations: a BBQ, a pub, a restaurant dinner, and a dinner party. We examine moderators of these perceptions including whether the requester presents themselves as vegetarian or a meat restrictor and whether they cite health, environmental or no motives for their request. Rapidly changing climate is disrupting the High Arctic's water systems. As tracers of hydrological processes, stable water isotopes can be used for high quality monitoring of Arctic waters to better reconstruct past changes and assess future environmental threats. However, logistical challenges typically limit the length and scope of isotopic monitoring in High Arctic landscapes. Here, we present a comprehensive isotopic survey of 535 water samples taken in 2018 and 2019 of the lakes and other surface waters of the periglacial Pituffik Peninsula in far northwest Greenland. This study focuses on the the development of a method to create Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) for forecasting coastal inundation, a critical tool in the face of rising sea levels and extreme weather events. The study utilizes oblique stereo imagery captured with non-metric cameras, focusing on the area adjacent to Horace Caldwell pier in Port Aransas, Texas. Wildlife biodiversity is essential for healthy, resilient and sustainable ecosystems. For biologists, this diversity also represents a treasure trove of genetic, molecular and developmental mechanisms that deepen our understanding of the origins and rules of life. However, the rapid decline in biodiversity reported recently foreshadows a potentially catastrophic collapse of many important ecosystems and the associated irreversible loss of many forms of life on our planet. The increasing demand for constitutional recognition of the right to a healthy environment (‘RTHE’) has been a matter of public concern and debate in many countries, including Canada.2 This paper asks, will a constitutional RTHE within the Canadian Constitution add any value when statutes already exist to protect the environment (and thereby health)? Memories Of Black Gold: Populist Narratives Of Memory Politics Justifying The Polish Coal Industry, Yvonne Pan

This paper examines narratives incorporating memory politics used by right-wing populists (RWPs) to justify their support for Poland’s coal industry despite contradictory factors. Using theories of populist memory politics, this research examines coal’s role in Polish history and RWP political rhetoric involving the coal industry. It concludes that Polish RWPs narrate the coal industry as a force against foreign oppression, drawing upon a paradigm where the Polish nation is the victim of a series of historical oppressors. This victim-perpetrator relationship is projected onto the modern Poland-EU relationship, with the latter cast as the current prospective oppressor. The coal industry is …
