Understanding plant‒microbial interactions in petroleum-contaminated soil is critical for enhancing phytoremediation technology. In this study, the root exudate of crabgrass (Digitaria ciliaris) was collected hydroponically, and its dominant composition was identified via GC‒MS. A soil microcosm study was subsequently conducted to evaluate the influence of crabgrass root exudates on microbial growth, dehydrogenase activity, and biodegradation of total petroleum hydrocarbons by the petroleum-degrading bacteria Micrococcus luteus WN01 and Acinetobacter lwoffii A07. The amendment of crabgrass root exudates significantly promoted microbial degradation in both A. lwoffii A07 (47.98%) and M. luteus WN01 (62.78%), which were 8.47% and 15.78% greater than …

Plastics and microplastic contamination pose increasing threats to human health, food safety, and environmental sustainability. In Vietnam, rapid urbanization, economic growth, and population expansion have contributed to a surge in plastic waste, intensifying pollution across regions such as the Red River Delta. This study adopts the theory of planned behavior (TPB) to explore community perceptions, attitudes, and behavioral intentions regarding plastic and microplastic pollution. Climate change necessitates innovative strategies, with carbon markets emerging as a key tool for mitigation. This study assesses the readiness and willingness of stakeholders in Anambra State to engage in a subnational carbon market. Using a structured questionnaire distributed across government, industry, and academia, the data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analysis. The findings indicate a moderate level of readiness (M = 3.47) and willingness (M = 3.48) among stakeholders. How do so many species of trees coexist in a forest? A century of research has discovered multiple mechanisms that could maintain local-scale diversity. Chief among them, at least at early life stages, is a pattern of stronger neighborhood competition from conspecifics than heterospecifics. This pattern is driven, at least in part, by specialized natural enemies such as insects and pathogens that damage host trees more than others. Unsurprisingly, the strength of neighborhood effects varies widely among species and a current avenue of research involves understanding what explains this variation. Identifying And Forecasting Key Drivers Of Greenhouse Gas Emissions In Ireland's Residential Sector Multivariate Time Series Analysis., Sallam Noor Aldeen Salman

This study evaluates advanced time-series forecasting models to predict greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE) in Ireland's residential sector. LSTM, XGBoost, and ARIMA models were tested alongside feature selection methods including PCA, XGBoost-based importance, and Granger causality. Urban population growth and electricity consumption emerged as the most significant predictors. While LSTM struggled due to limited data, XGBoost showed strong predictive performance (MAPE ~9%), and ARIMA with key features achieved the highest accuracy (MAPE 3.78%). Forecasts indicate a declining GHGE trend, offering actionable insights for environmental planning and policy in the residential sector.

Climate change and climate policies have distributional consequences on a global scale. Climate impacts are unevenly distributed, responsibilities for emissions vary across countries, and capabilities to mitigate and adapt differ. These distributional aspects are at the heart of international climate policy discussions. In response, international climate finance—financial transfers from developed to developing countries for climate mitigation, adaptation, and damage compensation—has become a central topic in international climate negotiations. The three chapters of this dissertation explore distributional considerations in climate economics from different perspectives and assess how optimal climate policy may depend on these considerations.

Given the global rise in surface temperatures due to climate change, it is important to understand the interactions governing economic and behavioral responses to household heat adaptation. This study investigated the relationship between energy prices and heatstroke risks in Japan. The analysis revealed that the increase in energy prices during the 2021 global energy crisis was associated with an unexpected decrease in home heatstroke emergency room visits. This result is consistent with the Peltzman effect and moral hazard problem, as reduced economic access to air conditioning may have increased risk perception, heightening heatstroke prevention measures. This dissertation examines repetitive loss factors in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, Florida. It focuses on physical building characteristics and socioeconomic characteristics in an historic analysis of claims data from 1977 through 2014. Later, the focus is on predicted areas, or “hotspots” where climate-change induced sea level rise in conjunction with increased storm activity may cause increased flooding in the future. The study employs various statistical models, including Poisson and negative binomial regression modeling, spatial regression modeling and hot spot analysis to analyze FEMA property claims data and socioeconomic indicators.

This dissertation tackles significant issues in ecological monitoring, ocean dynamics forecasting, and assistive technology via three independent but interrelated research streams.

The first study examines the localization and distribution of marine organisms along Florida’s East Coast via passive acoustic monitoring methods. Abstract Shrubland and early successional habitats (ESH) support a diversity of wildlife, including many declining songbirds. However, nonnative shrubs increasingly dominate these habitats, potentially altering habitat quality by influencing prey availability. Habitat quality can be assessed by observing foraging behaviors of songbirds and identifying preferred and avoided substrates as well as testing the predictions of optimal foraging theory; specifically that birds will maximize their energy gain relative to the costs. This study investigates the application of statistical, machine learning, and deep learning methods to detect monthly weather anomalies in Ireland between 1960-2024. Climate variability is intensifying globally, increasing the urgency for accurate detection of unusual weather events. Using publicly available data from Met Eireann provided by the CSO PxStat Open Data Portal, the research applied comprehensive preprocessing including Bayesian Ridge iterative imputation, temporal and seasonal feature engineering, and ensemble statistical anomaly labelling based on z-score, interquartile range, and rolling residual analysis. This thesis explores the lives and careers of botanical painter Marianne North, landscape architect Beatrix Farrand, and literary nature writer Mary Hunter Austin to examine the interplay of femininity and the representation of nature in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. All three figures had an approach to environmental representation which was based in field work, knowing a place truly, and a sense of harmony between subject and context of the produced work. The construction industry has made progress in improving safety controls, but vocational and professional education and training are still necessary to ensure site safety. In the 2022-2023 budget, the Hong Kong government has allocated HK$1.2 billion to The Construction Innovation and Technology Fund (CITF) implementation of advanced construction technologies (ACT) and a smart site safety system (SSSS) and the purpose of this system is to reduce accidents in the construction industry. Per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), termed “forever chemicals” for their persistence in the environment, are under investigation for their carcinogenic effects, but their specific impacts on colorectal cancer (CRC) progression remain largely unexplored. This study uses untargeted metabolomics to examine the effects of PFAS exposure on cells of CRC stages 2, 3, and 4, and identify state-specific alterations in important metabolic pathways. Later stage cells exhibit a greater response than early stage cells, suggesting increased susceptibility to PFAS effects in cells of more advanced cancer. Low-lying deltas worldwide are extremely vulnerable to sea-level rise. As the risks of climate-induced flooding become increasingly clear, the thirst for infrastructure-driven adaptation increases. This highlights a patent need to understand the impacts of engineering adaptation solutions, especially those targeting built structures such as dykes and sluices, on farmers from a bottom-up, farmer-centred perspective. The study addresses this call by examining cases where dyke policies, while successful in some dimensions, have undermined small-scale farmer livelihoods in Ca Mau ― Vietnam’s southernmost rural province.
