In a continuously urbanizing world, developing cities that support a good and full life for women—an issue with implications for families and communities at large—should be a concern in the planning of human settlements. This is particularly important for the transition to sustainable cities, which is a priority in most contemporary societies. This study focuses on women’s everyday lives in Athens, Greece, particularly the suburb of Nea Smyrni. It builds on the stories of five women shared through in-depth interviews that were conducted between spring 2023 and winter 2024. This study utilizes a feminist perspective in demonstrating how gender intersects with socioeconomic forces of over a century of patriarchal environmental endeavors such as global modernization: imperialism and colonialism as conditions that have historically perpetuated environmental degradation in Zimbabwe as elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa. The study examines how environmental policies of both pre and post independent Zimbabwe have had devastating consequences on the poor and marginalized, particularly women and girl children of this Third World in the nation. Livestock depredation by large carnivores significantly threatens human livelihoods across the globe, with severe ecological and socioeconomic implications. Economic costs of livestock depredation impact the tolerance for carnivores among communities living alongside wildlife, often straining human-carnivore coexistence. Using geographic and temporal attributes from livestock depredation records (n=406) collected between 2004 and 2023, we identified spatiotemporal patterns of depredation by African lions, leopards, and spotted hyenas in the Tarangire-Manyara Ecosystem in northern Tanzania. We found significant interactive relationships between the number of attacks reported and the season, time, and site of attack; with these interactions differing between the carnivores. To better …

Introduction: Deaths of despair (DoD), encompassing suicides, drug overdoses, and alcohol-related liver diseases, have emerged as a critical public health crisis in the United States, with their rise particularly pronounced from 1995 to 2013 and exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Kentucky, grappling with high rates of substance use disorder, poor mental health, and economic hardship, is at the forefront of this issue, particularly in its rural and Appalachian regions.

Approaches To Addressing Unsheltered Homelessness In Texas, Bashar Ahmed Aldulymi

In the United States, the trend of homelessness is increasing, which is causing negative impacts on society. The present study demonstrated the relationship of various socioeconomic factors with the trend of homelessness to address unsheltered homelessness in Houston, Texas. For this purpose, the study employed a cross-sectional quantitative research design. Under multiple linear regression analysis, the findings of the quantitative data analysis revealed that income level (p < 0.001) and employment status (p < 0.001) were the promotors of homelessness in the country. Though this statistical test revealed race as a less significant promotor of homelessness, chi-square highlighted a strong association of this variable with the trends of homelessness. Thus, the findings implied that policymakers and authorities must address low-income levels and unemployment to curb homelessness in Houston.

Ecosystems worldwide are experiencing changes in structure and function as populations of fauna decline and experience local extinctions (Torres-Romero et al. 2020). Due primarily to their body size, large mammal herbivores (LMHs) are disproportionately prone to extinction from human activities such as agricultural expansion, deforestation, and anthropogenic climate change (Pringle et al. 2023). Medical Apartheid Regions (MARs) are a widely underesearched topic that are heavily prominent in the southeastern United States, specifically rural areas (Brînzac et al. 2023). Due to the historical implementation of redlining (Egede et al., 2023) and structural racism (Miller & Vasan, 2021) in the development of the southern United States, a reclassification of medical deserts needed to occur to truly assess the implications of a lack of healthcare acces.

Resilience In The Face Of Climate Change: Exploring The Ecophysiology, Adaptation, And Conservation Of Mytilus Edulis In The Gulf Of Maine, Mackenzie J. Arnott, Justin Baumann

The Gulf of Maine is among the fastest-warming marine environments globally, facing rapid increases in temperature and ocean acidification. These stressors jeopardize the Blue Mussel, Mytilus edulis, a foundational species vital for maintaining biodiversity, water quality, and coastal economies. This research investigates the resilience and vulnerability of M. edulis under combined thermal and acidification stressors, with a focus on thresholds of physiological breakdown. Key findings reveal critical thermal limits (>25°C) and pH thresholds (<7.3) beyond which metabolic, immune, and shell formation processes deteriorate. Conservation strategies such as selective breeding, habitat protection, and adaptive management are essential to ensure the survival of this keystone species in a changing climate.

How does the green credit ratio affect a bank return on assets? This study uses panel data from 2012 to 2019, covering 18 large banks in China, including 6 state-owned banks and major 12 important joint-stock and city commercial banks. I use regression models to measure the effect of the green credit ratio (GCR) on return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE), and we focus on how bank ownership and fixed effects matters.

We are currently facing what can only be described as a biodiversity crisis. Species are disappearing faster than ever before, largely due to habitat fragmentation caused by humans. How can old railroads be repurposed into recreational trails that can also help improve biodiversity and ecological function? By turning old derelict tracks into “green trails,” these tracks can be given new life and help reverse the effects of fragmentation, while providing recreational services to nearby communities.

This map shows outdoor recreation areas along with the most populated cities and all railroads in Minnesota. I wanted to find out what areas were most in need of outdoor recreation opportunities and how to provide those opportunities. I found that railroads and high population cities were concentrated together. These areas had little access to outdoor recreation. These railroads can be turned into trails to provide much-needed recreation to a large number of people.
