Phylloplane Sterilization With Bleach Does Not Reduce Btk Toxicity For Papilio Glaucus Larvae (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae), Laura Haas, J. Mark Scriber
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Neonate tiger swallowtail larvae (Papilio glaucus) were used to bioassay the effects of Btk (Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki) at 4 doses (0.268, 0.034, 0.008, and 0.004 BIU per cm leaf surface) with an untreated control. Larvae, obtained from females captured in Georgia and North Carolina, were fed leaves of either tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipfera) or black cherry (Prunus serotina) in experiments that either included a pre-treatment dip and rinse in 5% chlorox bleach or not, before the application of Btk (dipping leaves in serially diluted solutions of Foray 48B).
The results show no difference between North Carolina and …

First Nations communities in Canada are disproportionately affected by poor water quality. As one example, many communities have been living under boil water advisories for decades, but government interventions to date have had limited impact. This paper examines the importance of using Indigenous research methodologies to address current water issues affecting First Nations. The work is part of larger project applying decolonizing methodologies to Indigenous water governance. Because Indigenous epistemologies are a central component of Indigenous research methods, our analysis begins with presenting a theoretical framework for understanding Indigenous water relations. We then consider three cases of innovative Indigenous research …

Despite synergistic goals across a wide breadth of fields and modalities, coastal landscape conservation projects that engage the lay public and integrate narratives of place remain elusive. This paper addresses these needs by introducing and evaluating the Wisconsin Geotools, an integrated pair of mobile-and web-based applications that allow users to generate and share spatially defined multimedia observations — including photos, short textual descriptions (or journals), and audio and video clips — of their surrounding bioregional landscapes. We followed a participatory, user-centered design process to develop a mobile application that uses GPS capabilities to geolocate multimedia observations of landscapes and feed …

Estimating The Creation And Removal Date Of Fracking Ponds Using Trend Analysis Of Landsat Imagery, Rutherford V. Platt, David Manthos, John Amos
Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is a process of introducing liquid at high pressure to create fractures in shale rock formations, thus releasing natural gas. Flowback and produced water from fracking operations is typically stored in temporary open-air earthen impoundments, or frack ponds. Unfortunately, in the United States there is no public record of the location of impoundments, or the dates that impoundments are created or removed. In this study we use a dataset of drilling-related impoundments in Pennsylvania identified through the FrackFinder project led by SkyTruth, an environmental non-profit. For each impoundment location, we compiled all low cloud Landsat imagery …

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Photovoice was used as a participatory research method to document perceived local environmental hazards, pollution sources, and potential impact on health among community members to address environmental health disparities. A convenience sample of 16 adults in Orangeburg, South Carolina participated in Photovoice. Photos depicted positive and negative implications of the environment across seven themes: recreation and leisure; food access; hazards and pollution; health, human, and social services; economic issues; beautification; and accommodation and accessibility. Positive and negative photos demonstrated a high level of interest among community members in considering how the environment influences health and health disparities.

Climatic Challenges And Environmental Pollution In India, T. Sarathy Ph.D.
Climatic Challenges And Environmental Pollution In India, T. Sarathy Ph.D.
International Review of Business and Economics
Global climate change is a change in the long-term weather patterns that characterize the regions of the world. The term “weather” refers to the short-term (daily) changes in temperature, wind, and/or precipitation of a region. In the long run, the climatic change could affect agriculture in several ways such as quantity and quality of crops in terms of productivity, growth rates, photosynthesis and transpiration rates, moisture availability etc. Climate change is likely to directly impact food production across the globe. Increase in the mean seasonal temperature can reduce the duration of many crops and hence reduce the yield. In areas …

International Review of Business and Economics
India as a developing economy is healthier nation because of proper and well-developed healthcare infrastructure. This leads to improvement in the life years and happiness of the population. The high life style increases the unhealthy practices of eating culture, fast food, no exercise and other. Even children’s are facing serious health issues in early ages. Due to this, every individual’s visiting the hospitals at least once in a month. Many get diseases while visiting hospitals where there is poor maintenance of various wastes, which leads to air pollution, waste water pollution, bio medical waste pollution, and soil pollution. Economics And Air Pollution- An Analysis Of Chennai City, Preethi Mohan Manjula Ph.D.
International Review of Business and Economics
Air pollution causes a variety of environmental effects, besides harming human health. Acid rain is precipitation containing harmful amounts of nitric and sulfuric acids. These acids are formed primarily by nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides released into the atmosphere when fossil fuels are burned. In the economics of pollution, we see that there is a point where both society and the environment have some satisfaction, or in other words, there is an optimum amount of pollution. The optimum amount of pollution can be defined as the point where the marginal benefit equals the marginal cost of pollution. Air pollution is …

Future growth in urbanization will mainly occur in cities of the rising south. UN Habitat reports that in the past decade, the urban population in emerging economies grew on average 1.2 million people per week. By 2050, it is expected that seven out of ten people will be living in cities. An accompanying technology to urbanization, the use of cellphones and smartphones has seen unprecedented growth in recent decades. Currently there are more active mobile connections (7.8 billion SIM connections and 4.8 billion unique mobile subscribers) than people in the world (7.4 billion), with penetration rates being large even in …

How Blue Are Your Buttons? An Experiment In Bee Color Perception And Pollinator Preference, Samantha Pollet
Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
My thesis research focuses on the importance of flower color in relation to pollinator preferences. I was inspired to carry out this ecological field experiment to learn more about bee vision patterns as well as have the experience of conducting my own research outdoors. Experimental trials were conducted on the LIU Post campus to determine whether bees are more attracted to pink or blue Bachelors Buttons (Centaurea cyanus). While we determined that there was a significant difference between interactions with pink and blue flowers, future researchers must test a larger population size of flowers to be sure of this trend …

Using Gis To Assess Recreational Access To The High Peaks Of Maine, Soren Denlinger
Atlas of Maine
Maine's High Peaks region, in the west-central mountains of Maine, provides extensive recreational opportunities. However, trailheads in the High Peaks region of Maine are scattered across both public and private land on a road network with varying levels of maintenance. These factors, in combination with long drive times and unplowed roads often keep potential visitors away from hiking centers (Clawson and Knetsch, 2011). The objective of this study is to analyze the region’s accessibility via road. Specifically, I wanted to know which trailheads were publicly owned and accessible in winter as well as how much driving time is required to …
