High Activity Urban Event Impacts Local Air Quality Of The Claiborne Corridor In New Orleans, La, Evrim Oral, Daniel Harrington, Mohamed S. Mohamed, Mohamed S. Rahman, Saheba Cuccia, Samrat Mukherjee, Amy Stelly, Barry Keim, Adrienne Katner
Journal of the Louisiana Public Health Association
Background: This paper presents fine particulate matter air pollution measurements in the hours before, during, and after a Port of New Orleans labor strike and a multi-day concert held at the New Orleans Superdome. Both events occurred in areas adjacent to the Claiborne Expressway, an elevated highway extension of Interstate-10 (I-10), which runs through the Claiborne Corridor neighborhood of the City of New Orleans, LA (USA). Methods: Air sensors were located southeast and northwest of the Claiborne Expressway to measure respirable “fine particulate matter” (PM2.5), a traffic-related pollutant associated with cardiovascular and respiratory disease. Ambient PM2.5 concentration measurements were collected …
Doughnut Economics And Strong Sustainability: Rethinking The Role Of Financial Investment, Isabelle Pierotti
Doughnut Economics And Strong Sustainability: Rethinking The Role Of Financial Investment, Isabelle Pierotti
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates how private investment could align doughnut economic framework. Doughnut economics is a strong sustainability economic framework where the economy operates within planetary boundaries while ensuring social equity. Theories of sustainable development, weak sustainability, and strong sustainability are discussed to provide theoretical context for doughnut economics and mainstream economics. The analysis concludes that conventional, profit maximizing private investment does not support a doughnut economics system by supporting the depletion of natural resources and exacerbating social issues. Sustainable mainstream investment also fails to support a doughnut framework. Lastly, while impact investment is theoretically committed to social and financial returns, …

Between Utterance And Action: The Shaping Of Social Accountability In India’S Coastal Commons, Nayana Udayashankar, Aarthi Sridhar
Journal of Law and Public Policy
Judicial orders, management plans, and zonation maps prepared in relation to environmental laws encode the jurisprudence on accountability. Laws such as India’s Coastal Regulation Zone Notification (CRZ Notification) 2019 serve as sources of discourse on use and access rights. Such laws are crucial in shaping developmental decisions and democratic practice along the coast. As an environmental law that contains detailed articulation on judicially mandated planning, mapping, and public access to regulatory information, the CRZ Notification 2019 offers a good case to understand the relation between legal discourse and citizens’ agency. Citizens of the state of Tamil Nadu representing its small-scale …

Environmental Justice And Warehouse Pollution In New York City, Natalie Bump Vena
Environmental Justice And Warehouse Pollution In New York City, Natalie Bump Vena
Open Educational Resources
I am preparing a class module that will help students learn about environmental (in)justice, air pollution attendant to urban warehouses, and city policymaking. The primary learning outcomes will be:
- Apply the concepts of environmental racism and environmental justice to the problem of NYC’s warehouse facilities and the resulting movements to mitigate their pollution.
- Read and analyze legal documents.
- Analyze the extent to which an individual’s interests and experiences shape their policy positions.
- Evaluate the efficacy of proposed city legislation and zoning changes in advancing environmental justice in communities living with warehouses.
This project engages Queens by considering how proposed citywide …

Journal of Extension
The Environment Corps program at the [university] approaches community engagement by combining teaching, service learning, and extension work. This model of engagement harnesses the power of trained undergraduates in conducting meaningful and actionable projects for communities, building on the topical knowledge, outreach experience, and community contacts of seasoned Extension professionals, and in turn expanding the reach of their programs. Over 175 projects have been completed in partnership with 96 municipalities, nonprofits, or other entities. The program has documented benefits to both students and partner communities. The program team is interested in assisting others to adapt the model.

Playa Sediment Bioaccessibility Presents Previously Unknown Risks To Population Health In A Water-Stressed Region Undergoing Lake Desiccation: Salton Sea, Usa, Jordan Jaeger
Theses
Globally, drylands are expanding, and endorheic basins are in rapid decline. Saline lake desiccation exposes lakebed playa likely to become dust, posing potential health risks to surrounding communities. Studies investigating health risks from playa dust exposure often focus on health effects associated with the presence of airborne particulates, but fewer studies investigate health risks associated with dust source chemistry. This study examines dust source particle composition in a desiccating inland sea in a water-stressed agricultural region of California. Specifically, chemical bioaccessibility of bound trace elements uncovers risks to children, adults, and agricultural worker health. Arsenic exposure via sediment ingestion poses …

Extractive Frontiers And Indigenous Resistance: A Quantitative Analysis Of Environmental Conflicts In The Arctic, Isaac Eshun
Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) at UNI
The Arctic, like most Indigenous regions of the world, has been a target for extractive activities -mineral exploitation, coal mining and oil drilling which over the time has undermined local environment and subsistence livelihoods resulting in severe confrontations from the Indigenous people. Drawing on extractive activities from the global Environmental Justice atlas, this study employs logistic regression to examine how factors such as conflict sources, impact intensity, government involvement and number of socio-environmental harms influence resistance outcomes. Findings suggest that projects that involve multiple interconnected sources of conflicts are most likely to face intense opposition resulting in their cancellation in …
Disability Accommodations In Field Education: Exploring The Msw Student Perspective, Alicia Dawn Melnick
Disability Accommodations In Field Education: Exploring The Msw Student Perspective, Alicia Dawn Melnick
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The number of students with disabilities is increasing, yet little is known about how graduate social work students navigate accommodation during field placements. This study addressed the limited understanding of Master of Social Work (MSW) students’ experiences applying Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodations in practicum settings. How accommodations are managed can determine whether disabled students gain equitable access to training and the profession. The purpose of this exploratory qualitative study was to examine how MSW students with disabilities describe their experiences with applying ADA accommodations during field placements. Critical disability theory guided the study, emphasizing ableism and structural barriers …

Appropriations By Any Other Name: The Illegality And Unconstitutionality Of Supplemental Environmental Projects, Andrew Olson
Notre Dame Law Review
This Note fleshes out the history of SEPs and the recent arguments against them. First, Part I traces the history of SEPs, from the early use of third-party payments, through the development of formal policies governing SEPs, to the Trump and Biden administrations’ dueling approaches to them. Then Part II explains what’s wrong with SEPs. Expanding on the arguments made in the various Justice Department memoranda, this Note argues that SEPs contravene both the Miscellaneous Receipts Act (MRA) and the Antideficiency Act (ADA). Next, the Note argues that while their illegality might be remedied by statute, SEPs also present deeper—and …

Transformative Solidarity: Confronting Neoliberal Hegemony In Urban Schools With Constructivism And Critical Pedagogy, Ryan J. Lundell, Pedro Nava, Jonathan Montoya
Educational Leadership
Neoliberalism is more than a bundle of economic policies; it is a hegemonic ideology that permeates institutions and relationships, creating isolation and inequality (Brown, Undoing the demos: Neoliberalism’s stealth revolution, Zone Books, 2017; Han, Psychopolitics: Neoliberalism and new technologies of power, Verso, 2017). Neoliberal hegemony in urban schools limits student learning and propagates the purpose of education as the creation of human capital, not a socially aware citizenry (Brown, Undoing the demos: Neoliberalism’s stealth revolution, Zone Books, 2017); this creates a depoliticized labor force that strives for self-optimization rather than solidarity (Han, Psychopolitics: Neoliberalism and new technologies of power, Verso, …

Faculty Research 2025
This paper develops a vision for The Ecological Genome Project: an aspirational, global endeavour to connect human genomic sciences with the ethos of ecological sciences. The Project's goal is to strengthen interdisciplinary networks that relate to diverse initiatives using genomic technologies, with respect to shared ethical frameworks and governance structures. To this end, this paper proposes a practical definition of ecogenomics to align various methodologies and values in a single environmental field using principles used to safeguard all forms of life in their habitats. We achieve this by using a One Health approach as a pretext for disparate disciplines to …

INTRODUCTION: The Neighborhoods Study (TNS) is a novel investigation of adverse social exposome and brain health leveraging 22 Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers (ADRCs). TNS aims to understand if the adverse social exposures increase Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) risk. METHODS: TNS uses innovative methods to determine lifetime addresses of living (n = ≈ 3116) and brain bank cohorts (n = ≈ 8637). Addresses are linked to time-concordant adverse social exposome using the Area Deprivation Index (ADI) and summarized over time. Brain health measures are provided by the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center. RESULTS: We highlight a general overview and methodology …
The Use Of Science In Climate Governance: Bridging Diplomacy, Public Engagement, And Negotiation Interfaces, Janice Golding
The Use Of Science In Climate Governance: Bridging Diplomacy, Public Engagement, And Negotiation Interfaces, Janice Golding
New England Journal of Public Policy
Climate science appears to have come of age, marked by methodological rigor, interdisciplinary integration, and broad consensus. Negotiators in climate multilateralism navigate a complex terrain shaped by politics, economics, and social dynamics, where science may be treated as an insouciant factor in negotiation strategies. As climate change intensifies beyond the 1.5°C threshold, there is a growing risk that science will become even more marginalized in global governance. This could drown out the scientific authority of mandated institutions and create a disconnect between negotiation processes and the evolving role of science, undermining science’s potential to offer renewed relevance and solutions. Urgent …

A New View Of Formal Equality And A Case For Predistribution, Alex Raskolnikov
A New View Of Formal Equality And A Case For Predistribution, Alex Raskolnikov
Faculty Scholarship
A long-held egalitarian view is that formal equality — the absence of formal legal distinctions based on the material resources of individuals — is regressive. If legal rules are the same for the rich and the poor, the rich benefit and the poor suffer. This Essay argues that this view is mistaken. Far from being synonymous with laissez-faire, a commitment to formal equality provides a counterweight to the key neoliberal maxim that regulation of the market economy should focus on efficiency alone. Moreover, a new view of formal equality offered here reveals a key advantage of predistribution over redistribution: Explicit …
