Toward Climate Resilient Cities: Endorsing Green Justice Amid Unequal Distribution And Disparities In Fast-Sprawling Urban Nagpur, Prajakta Pimpalshende, Manu Thomas, Jayshree Shukla, Shruti Lahoti, Shalini Dhyani Dec 2025

Toward Climate Resilient Cities: Endorsing Green Justice Amid Unequal Distribution And Disparities In Fast-Sprawling Urban Nagpur, Prajakta Pimpalshende, Manu Thomas, Jayshree Shukla, Shruti Lahoti, Shalini Dhyani

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Population expansion and accelerated land development frequently overlook the inclusion of green infrastructure, leading to disparities in Urban Green Space (UGS) distribution. In rapidly urbanizing cities of the Global South, ensuring socio-ecological connectivity is vital for promoting sustainable, climate-resilient, multifunctional landscapes. This study uses Nagpur, a rapidly expanding Indian city, as a case study to investigate spatial inequities in UGS access through the lens of green justice. We employed the Demand Supply Gap assessment (World Health Organization and Urban and Regional Development Plans Formulation and Implementation, Government of India guidelines), the 3-30-300 green space rule as a guiding principle to …

'That All May Be One’: Incarnation, Solidarity, And Anti-Racism In Jesuit Education, Yancy Hughes Dominick Dec 2025

'That All May Be One’: Incarnation, Solidarity, And Anti-Racism In Jesuit Education, Yancy Hughes Dominick

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Jesuit colleges and universities in the US have been striving to become anti-racist. This work is often tied to mission and to a shared commitment to Jesuit and Catholic values like a faith that does justice and the dignity of all persons. At the same time, however, many Jesuit institutions frame their commitment to anti-racism in language that does not appeal to specific aspects of Jesuit tradition; likewise, mission and Jesuit identity is often described in ways that make no overt reference to anti-racism. A robust anti-racism, I argue, arises necessarily out of Jesuit Catholic thought, and fully realized Jesuit …

Ecosystem Services Demand In Social-Ecological Systems: Towards A Typology Of Assessment Approaches, Fabio Rubbi Dec 2025

Ecosystem Services Demand In Social-Ecological Systems: Towards A Typology Of Assessment Approaches, Fabio Rubbi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Assessing ecosystem service (ES) demand remains conceptually fragmented and methodologically inconsistent in social-ecological systems (SES) research due to the lack of a framework linking human preferences to benefits derived from ES fruition. This study develops a systematic typology of ES demand assessment based on an integrative review of empirical studies. We conceptualize demand as emerging from two competing modalities: the consumption of provisioning and cultural services, which may drive ecosystem depletion, and the need for risk reduction through regulating services, which supports ecosystem preservation. Building on this distinction, we identify five valuation approaches, two that directly translate ES value into …

Race, Fear Of Falls, Built Environment And Physical Activity In Older Adults With Cancer, Kristen Fessele Dec 2025

Race, Fear Of Falls, Built Environment And Physical Activity In Older Adults With Cancer, Kristen Fessele

General Submissions: Community and Population-based Materials

Motivation for older adults with cancer (OAC) to engage in physical activity (PA) during and after cancer treatment may be limited by many factors. OAC may be affected by persistent symptoms limiting PA capability such as fatigue, pain and dyspnea, or lack safe home or neighborhood spaces to engage in activity. Fear of falling (FOF) is a major concern among OAC and may decrease PA and life-space mobility. To understand how OAC perceptions of cancer treatment, FOF and their local built environment (BE) influence PA behaviors, we partnered with ResearchMatch.org to recruit a sample of 19 people with a history …

Efficacy Of Oil And Gas Production Site Remediation In U.S. Arid/Semi-Arid Regions, Skye Ontiveros Dec 2025

Efficacy Of Oil And Gas Production Site Remediation In U.S. Arid/Semi-Arid Regions, Skye Ontiveros

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Oil and gas production (OGP) is expanding, paralleled by its polluting leaks and spills (LS), and outpaced by its waste. This raises the question: Does remediation of LS occur effectively when needed to protect the environment and public, particularly in major producing regions like arid/semi-arid regions (ASAR), which account for approximately 72% of US oil and 42% of gas production? To answer, a review of the eight largest national remedial laws, sourced from the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), identified 14 OGP exemptions for remedial determinants (RDs): factors affecting remedial frequency and efficacy (e.g. LS monitoring and chemical disclosure). An …

Pavements And The Urban Heat Island Effect: A Network Analysis Of Research Trends And Knowledge Structure, Fouzieh Rouzmehr, Saman Jamshidi Dec 2025

Pavements And The Urban Heat Island Effect: A Network Analysis Of Research Trends And Knowledge Structure, Fouzieh Rouzmehr, Saman Jamshidi

Architecture Faculty Research

The urban heat island (UHI) effect is one of the most pressing challenges associated with rapid urbanization. It arises primarily from the replacement of natural vegetation with impervious surfaces, alterations in surface energy balance, and heat emissions from human activity. Mitigating these drivers has become a global priority, particularly in fast-growing cities. Pavements play a central role in UHI intensification due to their large surface coverage, low albedo, and capacity to retain heat. This study adopts a bibliometric approach to systematically map the knowledge structure and research trends in pavement-related UHI studies. A dataset of 834 publications from Web of …

Quantifying Benefits Of Biochar With Variable Absorption Capacity As A Partial Cement Replacement In Concrete, Benjamin Shannon Dec 2025

Quantifying Benefits Of Biochar With Variable Absorption Capacity As A Partial Cement Replacement In Concrete, Benjamin Shannon

Theses and Dissertations

Extensive research has been conducted on biochar-incorporated concrete. However, no concrete mixture design guideline is currently available for implementing biochar incorporation in practice. The objective of this study was to correlate biochar absorption capacity with the compressive strength of biochar-incorporated concrete, to quantify the benefits of biochar and develop mix design guidelines. Biochar with varying absorption capacities was incorporated into concrete at 10%, 20%, and 40%. Strength and moisture loss were recorded over the 90-day curing period of the biochar-incorporated concrete. Results revealed three main findings: (1) in 10%, 20%, and 40% biochar mixes, the normalized strengths ranged from 0.65–0.85, …

Talkin' 'Bout My Genderation: The Effect Of Gender Bias On Arbitral Representation, Amy E. Allen Dec 2025

Talkin' 'Bout My Genderation: The Effect Of Gender Bias On Arbitral Representation, Amy E. Allen

Washington Journal of Social & Environmental Justice

Gender bias is rampant in all industries, and the world of arbitration is no exception. For decades, members of the field of arbitration have debated the suitability of women as arbitrators. This led to a broader discussion regarding different styles of arbitration, how or if these styles are related to the gender of the arbitrator, and whether one arbitration style is more effective than others. This paper begins with a brief assessment of the history of arbitration, as well as a more focused overview of the history of women in arbitration. Next, the paper questions the reasons for gender disparity …

Rights Of Nature, Wrongs For The Commons: Risks Of Assigning Legal Personhood To The Rivers Of Washington State, Srinandan Ramachandran Dec 2025

Rights Of Nature, Wrongs For The Commons: Risks Of Assigning Legal Personhood To The Rivers Of Washington State, Srinandan Ramachandran

Washington Journal of Social & Environmental Justice

The Rights of Nature (“RoN”) movement, which seeks to grant legal personhood to natural entities, has recently gained traction in Washington State and globally. While intended to enhance environmental protection and Indigenous sovereignty, RoN burdens commons governance by expanding the right to exclude. This paper advances a critique of proposals to grant legal personhood to rivers in Washington State, highlighting conflicts with standing, liability, and the jurisprudential tenets of legal personhood. RoN undermines equitable usufructuary access to the commons, or lands and waters without exclusionary rights, thereby impeding marginalized peoples’ ability to utilize shared resources. Instead of assigning legal personhood …

De Facto Death Sentences For Misdemeanor Offenses: A Right To Medication For Opioid Use Disorder Induction Under The Washington Law Against Discrimination, Alena R. Sharp

Washington Journal of Social & Environmental Justice

The opioid crisis remains one of the deadliest public health emergencies in the United States, disproportionately impacting marginalized communities, including people in the criminal legal system. Medication for opioid use disorder is the recognized standard of care for treating opioid use disorder. Despite the fact that medications have also been shown to reduce overdose deaths and relapse rates, many prisons and jails continue to impose blanket prohibitions on medications for opioid use disorder for nonpregnant individuals, placing them at an elevated risk for acute withdrawal, suicide, and fatal overdose.

This comment examines the systemic barriers to access medication for opioid …
