Can Providing An Outdoor Education Activity Booklet That Meets State Standards Of Learning Increase Environmental Education In The Classroom?, Danielle Simmons

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

For this capstone project an outdoor activity booklet was created to help bridge the gap between formal and informal education. In order to accomplish that, the guiding question was: Can providing an outdoor education activity booklet that meets state standards of learning increase environmental education in the classroom? This booklet is meant for students in grades kindergarten to second grade to be used at school or at home, to explore their environment while meeting Virginia standards of learning. This booklet focuses on place-based learning and goes through the five regions of Virginia using activities to guide students' learning. The booklet …

Murals & Mother Nature: Urban Environmental Art In Lisbon Reveals Great Concern And Appreciation For The Environment, Ana Gunther

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Urban art is a novel dimension of the environmental movement. Utilizing highly trafficked areas, urban art has the potential to spread environmental messages both because of the size of the audience and because of the contrast between nature-centered art and the urban context. The paper discusses 15 environmental urban artworks in Lisbon and conducts a visual and thematic analysis. The analysis revealed five themes present in Lisbon: the power and beauty of nature, connection with nature, environmental loss and degradation, waste management, and climate change. The most prevalent theme in Lisbon was the connection with nature, followed by a tie …

Capital City Ventures Towards An Equitable Clean Energy Transition: A Case Study Comparison Between Columbia, South Carolina And Richmond, Virginia, Claire Windsor Apr 2022

Capital City Ventures Towards An Equitable Clean Energy Transition: A Case Study Comparison Between Columbia, South Carolina And Richmond, Virginia, Claire Windsor

Senior Theses

Combatting climate change requires a rapid transition to renewable sources for energy generation. In the United States, the electricity sector alone accounts for 28% of greenhouse gas emissions (28%), with about 63% of electricity generation derived from burning of fossil fuels (EPA, 2020). In order to lower greenhouse emissions from the energy sector, federal, state, and local policies must pave the way for renewable energy and energy efficiency innovations and policies. However, political action to address the effects and combat the causes of climate change have been limited due to political gridlock at the federal level. In addition, under neoliberalism, …

Foreword To Environmental Justice In America: Where We Have Been & Can Go, Zachary R.M. Outzen Apr 2022

Foreword To Environmental Justice In America: Where We Have Been & Can Go, Zachary R.M. Outzen

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

Recognizing that recent progress is only the beginning in a long journey to rectifying past environmental injustices, this Symposium was convened to ask two critical questions regarding the state of environmental justice in America today. First, how did we get here? Second, how do we move forward?

With an eye to a future in which America lives up to Dr. Bob Bullard’s vision of environmental justice, the Symposium hosted four panel discussions, featuring scholars of legal and non-legal disciplines, attorneys and non-legal advocates, and the members of the marginalized communities on the front lines of the struggle for environmental justice. …

Racial Allies, Atinuke O. Adediran Apr 2022

Racial Allies, Atinuke O. Adediran

Fordham Law Review

Racial allies are white individuals and institutions that actively work to dismantle systems of racial inequality and the consequences of poverty that disproportionately impact communities of color and that are willing to both confer and share power with members of subjugated groups. There is no other sector of the legal profession that professes to be racial allies more than individuals and institutions within the public interest law sector. Yet, these institutions that address structural racism and disproportionately serve communities of color appear not to share power with racial and ethnic minorities. The public interest law sector has been at the …

Cultivating Meaningful Consultation And Collaboration: Tribal Environmental Protection In Michigan, Zachary Reed Apr 2022

Cultivating Meaningful Consultation And Collaboration: Tribal Environmental Protection In Michigan, Zachary Reed

Masters Theses

In the year 2022, there are 12 federally reaffirmed Native American tribes in Michigan. These tribes all maintain natural resource departments to manage tribal environments. Indigenous groups have a rich history of protection and understanding of the natural world. This connection to land and water has been systematically challenged through patterns of colonialism. Through policy making, revitalization efforts and environmental ethics, the State of Michigan has been improved by tribal natural resource departments. But, while the United States and the State of Michigan recognizes tribal sovereignty, meaningful tribal consultation is inadequate. Through collaborative interviews, historical sources, and contemporary evidence, this …

Uplifting Voices: Implementing A Heritage-Based Civil Rights Program In The United States Forest Service, Amanda Jo Campbell Crawford Apr 2022

Uplifting Voices: Implementing A Heritage-Based Civil Rights Program In The United States Forest Service, Amanda Jo Campbell Crawford

Masters Theses

The United States Forest Service holds in public trust hundreds upon thousands of historically significant sites. For decades, the management of these special places has focused on basic site identification and protection to meet legal compliance measures for Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Standard practices within the agency led to cultural sites being identified on the ground in a cursory fashion, but with little research or follow up into the history of the site of the people that had created and occupied it. Sites reflecting the identity, history, or material culture of People of Color were especially …

Hyflex Primary Source Instruction For First-Year Writing Students, Crystal Goldman, Amanda Roth, Dominique Turnbow, Timothy Chu Mar 2022

Hyflex Primary Source Instruction For First-Year Writing Students, Crystal Goldman, Amanda Roth, Dominique Turnbow, Timothy Chu

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Teaching first-year university students to engage with and analyze primary sources can offer a number of significant challenges, including the need to protect fragile physical items in library collections and the prevalence of historical sources centering white hegemony. Add in the need for the information literacy instruction to be scalable for large groups, plus available synchronously and asynchronously, and designing a meaningful learning experience becomes exponentially more difficult.

Yet a fruitful partnership between a team of librarians and the faculty of an undergraduate writing program allowed for an innovative and hyflex approach to primary source instruction. Through the use of …

More Money, Fewer Problems: A Post-Alston V. Ncaa Approach To Reducing Gender Inequities In Sports, Kelley L. Flint

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

In 2021 over the span of a few months, amateurism, the foundation of the

National Collegiate Athletic Association was challenged and redefined. Following

the passage of “name, image, and likeness” laws at the state level

and an unfavorable Supreme Court ruling, the NCAA’s structure has been

forced to evolve. These changes have opened up possibilities for college athletes

to monetize their playing in a model that is not based on viewership or

revenue sharing. Serious equity gaps between men’s and women’s sports

continue to exist, predicated on which sports generate the most money. While

not a holistic solution, name, image …

Buka Siape Sambehin Injin: Komentar Atas Putusan Tentang Izin Lingkungan Pltu Celukan Bawang, Andri Gunawan Wibisana, Fajri Fadhillah

Jurnal Hukum & Pembangunan

This paper examines administrative court’s view in the Izin Lingkungan PLTU Celukan Bawang case. The paper puts emphasis on the use of actual losses to assess the plaintiffs’ legal standing and the deadline for filing a lawsuit. This paper considers that the court was incorrect in interpreting the legal standing by focusing on the absence of plaintiffs’ actual losses. The court also took a conservative position in determining the deadline for filing the lawsuit. This paper criticizes the court’s failure to take into account the issue of climate change addressed by the plaintiffs, so that the court missed a golden …

Socio-Economic Factors Of Environmental Problems, Manzura Kamalova, D. Shakenov Mar 2022

Socio-Economic Factors Of Environmental Problems, Manzura Kamalova, D. Shakenov

Karakalpak Scientific Journal

People consciously and intensively rebuild their nature according to their own needs, creating rural and urban areas in which they live. People care about the quality of life in the context of the unity of nature and culture. Social is a relatively new discipline that deals with urban space and environmental issues. One way to imagine what is beneficial to people is to find out what is economically best for the person. The article examines the economic factors that form the attitude towards social ecology in Kazakhstan. The article concludes that society should cooperate to achieve common things, both for …

Potassium Supplements Versus Hydrochlorothiazide In Hypertensive African Americans: Noninferiority Trial, Marshall Walters Mar 2022

Potassium Supplements Versus Hydrochlorothiazide In Hypertensive African Americans: Noninferiority Trial, Marshall Walters

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Hypertension disproportionately affects African Americans. First-line monotherapy for treating mild-to-moderate hypertension in African Americans is with thiazide-type diuretics, particularly hydrochlorothiazide. However, the efficacy of non-pharmaceutical control of blood pressure via potassium supplementation is comparable in this population and has a favorable side effect profile. We hypothesize that daily 80mEq potassium supplementation is non-inferior to 25.0mg hydrochlorothiazide in reducing systolic blood pressure in African American adults. To test this hypothesis, we will conduct a double-blind, randomized controlled trial and measure systolic blood pressure at 3 months and 6 months after initiating daily potassium supplementation versus low-dose hydrochlorothiazide and will evaluate this …

The Importance Of Stopping Environmental Dumping In Ghana: The Case Of Inefficient New And Used Cooling Appliances With Obsolete Refrigerants, Kofi A. Agyarko, Stephen O. The Importance Of Stopping Environmental Dumping In Ghana: The Case Of Inefficient New And Used Cooling Appliances With Obsolete Refrigerants, Kofi A. Agyarko, Stephen O. Andersen, Richard "Tad" Ferris, Hubert Zan, Emmanuel Osae-Quansah, Gabrielle Dreyfus, Mohamed Rida Derder, Leslie Olonyi Bosire, Laura Bloomer, Xiaopu Sun

Duke Environmental Law & Policy Forum

Environmentally harmful product dumping ("environmental dumping") of new and used low-efficiency cooling appliances with obsolete ozone-depleting and greenhouse gas refrigerants in African countries impoverishes communities, hinders economic development, threatens ecological systems, and harms public health. The use of low-efficiency cooling appliances increases energy demand, leading to higher power plant emissions and limiting affordable energy access in African countries. These low-efficiency appliances and products contain ozone-depleting refrigerants with high global-warming potential (GWP) or ozone-safe refrigerants with high GWP. Environmental dumping of these appliances and products makes it more difficult for countries to meet their international climate obligations and for the world …

Herstory: Women And Drugs. Women In The Environment Perspective Using Meta-Ethnography, Tammy Ann Shay Mar 2022

Herstory: Women And Drugs. Women In The Environment Perspective Using Meta-Ethnography, Tammy Ann Shay

Social Work Doctoral Dissertations

Women are underrepresented in drug and alcohol treatment programs globally. Socio-economic inequities and stigma continue to plague women seeking treatment. The macro and mezzo environments are often ignored, with more of a focus on women "choosing" drugs over traditional feminine roles. Social consequences and punishment are used to deter rather than to treat. Meta-ethnography is a seven-phase qualitative evidence synthesis valuable method for social research. Meta-ethnography was used to explore the treatment barriers involved with women seeking drug treatment. Qualitative studies were examined from EBSCO, PubMed, ProQuest, JSTOR, PubPsych, ResearchGate, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and Sage, yielding 422 peer-reviewed records. Inclusion …
