Negotiating Infrastructural Citizenship Beyond The State: Philanthropy, Non-Profit Organizations, And The Flint Water Crisis, Melissa Heil Jan 2023

Negotiating Infrastructural Citizenship Beyond The State: Philanthropy, Non-Profit Organizations, And The Flint Water Crisis, Melissa Heil

Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment

The urban infrastructure literature has explored how infrastructure is tied to the politics of citizenship: states’ use of infrastructure to include/exclude populations and marginalized populations’ use of infrastructure to claim fuller citizenship. Often, this literature focuses on the relationship between governments and city dwellers, neglecting the role of other actors, like NGOs and philanthropic organizations, that influence infrastructural citizenship. A hallmark of neoliberalism in the Global North has been the transfer of responsibilities from the state to the non-profit sector, increasing these organizations’ power to shape urban citizenship. This paper examines how non-profit organizations participate in the politics of infrastructural …

Expanding Current Definitions Of Environmental Stewardship Through Organizational Mission Statement Analysis, Alyssa S. Thomas, Michele Romolini Jan 2023

Expanding Current Definitions Of Environmental Stewardship Through Organizational Mission Statement Analysis, Alyssa S. Thomas, Michele Romolini

Center for Urban Resilience Scholarship

In recent years, environmental stewardship has been emphasized as one solution to social-ecological sustainability concerns, especially at the local scale. The Stewardship Mapping and Assessment Project (STEW-MAP) is a national research program developed by the USDA Forest Service that has been implemented at numerous locations in the United States and internationally. This study compared the mission statements of environmental stewardship groups in the Los Angeles River Watershed to previously proposed definitions and frameworks of organizational environmental stewardship to see how well they were reflected. A thematic analysis of the mission statements was also carried out to identify locally important themes …

Bicycling For Sustainable Urban Mobility: Comparing Urban Transformations In Paris And Bogotá, Luba Masliy Jan 2023

Bicycling For Sustainable Urban Mobility: Comparing Urban Transformations In Paris And Bogotá, Luba Masliy

Pomona Senior Theses

Promoting cycling is one of the low-hanging fruits to decarbonizing transportation, with further extensive benefits to quality of life. The main deterrent to the adoption of cycling for transportation is the lack of safe and connected infrastructure. This thesis explores and compares the case studies of Paris and Bogotá, where cycling modal shares grew significantly within the last decade. Plans outlining ambitious goals around sustainable transportation were put in place, and total bicycle network lengths increased rapidly in both cities. My work focuses on examining policy and infrastructure developments that lead to increased adoption of cycling over time in Paris …

Examining The Role Of Place Attachment In Climate Justice Engagement And Jewish Relationships To The Environment, Madeline Medina Jan 2023

Examining The Role Of Place Attachment In Climate Justice Engagement And Jewish Relationships To The Environment, Madeline Medina

Environmental Studies Honors Projects

It is critical that environmental justice and marginalized identities are the focus of climate-related discussions and research. Solutions must support the long-term wellbeing of people, especially and importantly those who are most vulnerable to the consequences of climate change. Psychological research suggests that place attachment–the meaningful bonds that occur between people and their environment (Scannell & Gifford, 2010)–is a key factor in motivating environmental behavior, but little research has examined its connection to environmental justice oriented behavior. This two-part exploration first evaluated the role of place attachment on engagement with both a typical climate change centered message and a climate …

Sustainable Community Development Case Study Of Collaboration, And Participation Between A Nonprofit Organization And Governance, Nicholas L. Brooks Jan 2023

Sustainable Community Development Case Study Of Collaboration, And Participation Between A Nonprofit Organization And Governance, Nicholas L. Brooks

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractThe Lake Calumet Task Force (LCTF) is a nonprofit community organization that has developed the Green Economic Industrial Corridor (GEIC) plan. The GEIC plan presents the socio-economic needs of Lake Calumet’s communities and proposed improvements to the natural and built environment, which have been neglected for decades. There was a gap in knowledge regarding collaboration and formation of partnerships for the design and implementation of sustainable development strategies across other key stakeholders. The qualitative case study explored how LCTF can combine principles of cooperation, partnership, and participation, with the local governmental agency’s design and implementation strategies, to enlarge upon the …

Exploratory Analysis Of Factors Affecting Home Delivery Returns, Michael Bronson, Miguel Figliozzi, Ali Riahi Samani, Sabya Mishra

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

E-commerce and house deliveries have experienced a rapid growth in the last two decades. The return of online shopping products is an undesirable side effect of online shopping that has not been properly studied in the transportation literature. Utilizing binary logit models, this research answers two novel research questions focusing on the online shopping channel: (i) What household characteristics are associated with a higher or lower propensity to return online purchases? and (ii) What type of products contribute to positive return delivery rates? To answer these questions models are developed using data collected from a household online survey of e-commerce …

The Impact Of Climate Change On The Mental Health Of Native American Youth: A Qualitative Study Protocol, Xun Wang

Public Health Theses

Climate change can induce a significant mental health burden on youth, especially for those in Indigenous communities. Despite their vulnerability, little is known about the impact of climate change on the mental wellbeing of Native American children and adolescents. This qualitative study seeks to address this gap by exploring Native American youths’ perceptions and emotional and behavioral responses to climate change. The study is grounded in Indigenous methodologies, which prioritize Indigenous worldviews, values, and ways of interaction. We will utilize relational capital on campus to identify the collaborating tribe and ensure a respectful and reciprocal relationship is built before proceeding …

Recommendations For Climate Adaptation To Preserve Connecticut Drinking Water Quality And Quantity, Matthew Salvatore Di Vitto Jan 2023

Recommendations For Climate Adaptation To Preserve Connecticut Drinking Water Quality And Quantity, Matthew Salvatore Di Vitto

Public Health Theses

Climate change impacts drinking water both directly and indirectly. Increases in temperature, drought frequency, and precipitation are among the climate impacts which currently and are projected to affect water quality and quantity in the continental United States. These impacts limit access to clean and abundant water sources by damaging habitat, spreading toxic substances via runoff and favoring the growth of harmful algal blooms. States can learn from one another to adopt best practices and policies to increase water resilience around the country. This paper explores how Connecticut can employ strategies from the States of New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Minnesota, …

Embedding Public Health In Climate And Energy Policy Action: Recommendations For Inflation Reduction Act Spending In Colorado, Maggie Hart Jan 2023

Embedding Public Health In Climate And Energy Policy Action: Recommendations For Inflation Reduction Act Spending In Colorado, Maggie Hart

Public Health Theses

Colorado should work towards rapid, equitable, and local-level decarbonization to mitigate the adverse public health impacts from climate change. Policy makers and organizations should capitalize on new funding streams from the Inflation Reduction Act to lead this charge. Actions may take several forms, but all should be centered in the following three premises:Engage energy, climate change, and public health stakeholders in all parts of Inflation Reduction Act implementation; Prioritize local level decarbonization through weatherization, household electrification, and adoption of electric public transportation vehicles; and Match Colorado state funds with Inflation Reduction Act funding to amplify support.

The Inflation Reduction Act …

Urban Air Pollution Exposure Of Children In Dwight Neighborhood In New Haven, Ct, Weixi Wu

Public Health Theses

Air pollution remains to be one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality, especially in the urban environment. Airborne contaminants exposure differs across different communities and in the US, low-income, racial minority communities bear the burdens of high exposure and adverse health outcomes. Therefore, we conducted a study among children living in the Dwight neighborhood in New Haven, CT, where the community is mainly low-income and consist of a large number of immigrants and racial minorities. The objectives of the study were 1) to characterize the distribution and magnitude of individual level of airborne contaminants exposure; 2) to determine …

Assessment Of Environmental Injustice: Spatial Analysis Of Pennsylvania Drilling Waste Facilities And Community Demographics, Avery Naperala Jan 2023

Assessment Of Environmental Injustice: Spatial Analysis Of Pennsylvania Drilling Waste Facilities And Community Demographics, Avery Naperala

Public Health Theses

Background: Unconventional oil and gas drilling practices have led to the production of technologically-enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials (TENORM) and chemical waste products, with insufficient toxicological data to understand the health impacts of exposures to these waste materials (U.S. Energy Information Administration, n.d.; US EPA, 2015b; ALNabhani et al., 2016; Elliott et al., 2017). Environmental injustices occur when disadvantaged populations experience a disproportionate burden of exposure to environmental disamenities, such as waste facilities (US EPA, 2015a). This study aims to assess whether disparate exposure to drilling waste facilities is occurring in Pennsylvania based on several socioeconomic factors, as well as …

A Geospatial Analysis Of Demographic Characteristics And Environmental Burdens In Communities Near Superfund Sites, Long Island, New York, Fintan Mooney

Public Health Theses

Nassau and Suffolk Counties of Long Island, New York, have over 30 federal Superfund sites, which may contribute to increased health inequities in nearby communities due to potential drinking water contamination and air pollutant emissions. We assessed the proximity to Superfund sites on Long Island in relation to community demographics and the presence of other environmental burdens. Data were obtained from the 2022 United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Justice Screening and Mapping Tool (EJScreen) and included proximity to Superfund sites (operationalized through the EJScreen distance weighting score), presence of other environmental hazards, and sociodemographic variables from the U.S. Census …

Characterizing Populations Living Near Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations: Implications For Health Equity And Environmental Justice, Leah Salzano Jan 2023

Characterizing Populations Living Near Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations: Implications For Health Equity And Environmental Justice, Leah Salzano

Public Health Theses

Current literature has highlighted that concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOS) are associated with adverse health outcomes among populations living in close proximity to the farms and that, in certain states, vulnerable populations may be disproportionately exposed to CAFOs. However, none of the existing studies have assessed the sociodemographic makeup of areas highly exposed to CAFOs across a diverse geographic range. Using locations of CAFOs across six states with robust operations, we conducted logistic regression models assessing the likelihood of high exposure vs. low exposure at the census tract level for each 10% increase in sociodemographic variables (percent unemployed, percent minority, …

Powering Up: Examining Frameworks For Community Engagement And Collective Tenant Action Around Energy Efficiency In New Haven, Ct, Alixandra P. Rachman Jan 2023

Powering Up: Examining Frameworks For Community Engagement And Collective Tenant Action Around Energy Efficiency In New Haven, Ct, Alixandra P. Rachman

Public Health Theses

Energy is an essential household need to sustain health and wellbeing. Connecticut has one of the highest energy costs in the nation and leaves a majority of residents experiencing energy insecurity, where households are not able to meet their energy needs. Energy efficiency retrofits have been introduced as an effective solution to sustain thermal comfort indoors. Despite increased funding and resources for energy efficiency, federal and state programs continue to go widely unused by tenants for several reasons from health and safety barriers, tenant-landlord power imbalances, and administrative challenges to name a few. This thesis aims to describe Connecticut’s energy …

Building The World We Want In An Era Of Climate Anxiety, Rebecca Bratspies Jan 2023

Building The World We Want In An Era Of Climate Anxiety, Rebecca Bratspies

Chapman Law Review

"It is 'unequivocal' that human activity is driving climate change.2 For clarity, unequivocal means 'leaving no doubt: clear, unambiguous[.]'3 The mean global temperature is already more than 1.1ºC above pre-industrial levels.4 And the trajectory is heading in the wrong direction. Keeping temperature increases below 1.5ºC, the level generally agreed on as essential for preventing the worst climate catastrophes,5 seems increasingly out of reach.6 Moreover, even at current levels of warming, the global climate appears to have gone completely off the rails. Widespread, rapid changes ranging from extreme temperatures,7 violent storms,8 accelerating ice melt,9 and expanding wildfire zones10 have become commonplace."

Interaction Of Adhd Severity And Neighborhood-Level Ses On Preschoolers’ Risk For Obesity At School-Age, Ramya V. Jayanthi Jan 2023

Interaction Of Adhd Severity And Neighborhood-Level Ses On Preschoolers’ Risk For Obesity At School-Age, Ramya V. Jayanthi

Dissertations and Theses

Background: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) oftentimes emerges during the preschool years. School-age children with ADHD are at an increased risk for obesity as compared to their non-ADHD peers, but it is unknown if this risk is observed in younger children. Socioeconomic status (SES) is negatively related to both ADHD and obesity, but how SES interacts with ADHD to affect later obesity is unknown. This study aimed to examine if preschool ADHD diagnosis and severity interacted with neighborhood-level SES to increase risk for overweight/obesity and greater growth in BMI at school-age. We hypothesized that ADHD severity/diagnosis would be associated with greater growth …

In addition, the study explores avenues for voicing indigenous concerns through regional organizations such as the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (ICHR). By identifying lessons for Latin American states and advocating for regional cooperation, the research aims to strengthen the position of indigenous peoples in international climate negotiations …

Sustainable Seabed Mining And The Phase 1 Environmental Standards And Guidelines, Keith Macmaster Jan 2023

Sustainable Seabed Mining And The Phase 1 Environmental Standards And Guidelines, Keith Macmaster

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

The oceans are home to a rich diversity of plant and animal life and a source of food and marine resources that drive economies. Climate change and pollution are changing ocean dynamics and the ability to support life. Seabed mining in areas beyond national jurisdiction will add to the ocean's stressors and could cause severe environmental damage. The International Seabed Authority (“ISA”) is mandated to manage access to and benefits from the seabed, its subsoil and mineral resources in areas beyond national jurisdiction (the “Area”). Although the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea sets out the legal …

Methods For Investigating Geo-Stem Learning Ecosystems: A Case-Study Of Illinois Earth Science Teachers, Cheryl L.B. Manning Jan 2023

Methods For Investigating Geo-Stem Learning Ecosystems: A Case-Study Of Illinois Earth Science Teachers, Cheryl L.B. Manning

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The complex interactions between people and resources in communities that foster innovation can be thought of as ecosystems. These ecosystems have the potential to broaden participation in the geoscience community if we invest in collaborations that map out long-term solutions and career pathways for young community members. Geo-STEM learning ecosystems (GLE) engage local communities in sustainable programs that promote geoscience literacy and inspire people to learn the geosciences. A goal of GLE is to leverage existing social systems and accelerate geo-STEM solutions for society. Thus far, few studies in the geosciences have interrogated what is meant by a “learning ecosystem” …

Monstrous Oil: Theorizing Petromodernity's Monsters, Madalynn Lee Madigar Jan 2023

Monstrous Oil: Theorizing Petromodernity's Monsters, Madalynn Lee Madigar

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Petroleum, a primary global energy resource, serves as a foundation of our contemporary society. However, the pervasive influence of oil as substance, commodity, and industry in our petromodern lives often goes unrecognized. In the present moment of biogeocultural crisis surrounding fossil fuels, recognizing and understanding our multifaceted engagements with petroleum is critical. This thesis contributes to the growing field of Petrocultural Studies by considering the conceptualization of petroleum through the associated tropes and figure of the monster. Through the petromonstrous, a term that encapsulates the massive scale, haunting effects, and human-other entanglements of petroleum, cultural attitudes and anxieties about oil …

“That’S Just The Way It Was”: A Critical Analysis Of Guilt, Evasion, And White Supremacy, Sommer Mahoney Jan 2023

“That’S Just The Way It Was”: A Critical Analysis Of Guilt, Evasion, And White Supremacy, Sommer Mahoney

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

In the public discourse around American slavery, there is an apologist evasion that can be summarized as such: that slavery was “just the way it was back then.” The word “just” in that phrase connotes a rather casual finality - that slavery in the American colonies, and then in the United States, could not have been avoided. But even a cursory overview of slave rebellion history and abolitionist history prove that this is not true. This reaction is an attempt at evading the feeling of guilt often associated with historical atrocities. However, as Americans avoid their guilt, they also evade …

A Quaker Theology Of The City: Placing Quaker Testimony, Ecotheology, And “Place” In Conversation, Christy Randazzo Jan 2023

A Quaker Theology Of The City: Placing Quaker Testimony, Ecotheology, And “Place” In Conversation, Christy Randazzo

Quaker Religious Thought

Quaker theological and ethical frameworks are underappreciated resources for exploring the space, and (notably) the meaning, of the city, particularly in the ways that Quaker testimony—the holistic expression of the Quaker community’s core theological beliefs and ethical convictions in both individual actions and in an embodied communal “way of life”1—both undergirds Quaker work in environmental justice, and can inform conversations occurring at the intersection of urban planning, sustainability, and movements for social justice. When examined through the lens of historic Quaker approaches to the built environment, certain themes emerge, which—when placed in dialogue with contemporary concerns—frame an outline for a …

Review Of Mark Russ, Quaker Shaped Christianity: How The Jesus Story And The Quaker Way Fit Together (Winchester, Uk, And Washington, Dc: Christian Alternative/Quaker Quicks, 2022), Mike Huber Jan 2023

Review Of Mark Russ, Quaker Shaped Christianity: How The Jesus Story And The Quaker Way Fit Together (Winchester, Uk, And Washington, Dc: Christian Alternative/Quaker Quicks, 2022), Mike Huber

Quaker Religious Thought

Mark Russ longs for a spiritual community where he can be fully present. He could not find that kind of connection in a Christian church. As a gay man, he writes, “I couldn’t praise God in a community where I wasn’t fully embraced” (30). While Mark eventually found a spiritual home with Quakers in Britain, these Friends often seem uncomfortable with his devotion to Jesus; among British Friends, that part of him does not feel entirely welcome.

As someone standing in-between communities, the author hopes to open a couple of doors. First, he wants to make the story of Jesus …

State Sequestration: Federal Policy Accelerates Carbon Storage, But Leaves Full Climate, Equity Protections To States, Gabriel Pacyniak Jan 2023

State Sequestration: Federal Policy Accelerates Carbon Storage, But Leaves Full Climate, Equity Protections To States, Gabriel Pacyniak

Faculty Scholarship

Abstract

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change—the UN’s expert science panel—has repeatedly found that limiting climate change to prevent catastrophic harms will require at least some use of carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), and may entail substantial deployments of this technology. There is significant uncertainty, however, about the level of lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions achievable in practice from varying CCS applications; some applications could even lead to net increases in emissions. In addition, a number of these applications create or maintain other harms, especially those related to fossil fuel extraction and use. For these reasons, many environmental justice advocates …
