Community Planning, Environmental Stewardship, And Water: A Comparative Assessment Of Green Infrastructure In Texas Cities, Amruta A. Sakalker May 2023

Community Planning, Environmental Stewardship, And Water: A Comparative Assessment Of Green Infrastructure In Texas Cities, Amruta A. Sakalker

Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive

Riparian lands, the interface between terrestrial and water ecologies, play a critical role in keeping urban ecosystems healthy. However, rapidly sprawling metropolitan regions in Texas continue to urbanize environmentally vulnerable riparian areas. As urban areas are growing, access to green spaces is shrinking, bringing contestation for programming, ownership, and use of lands around water bodies. Over the past two decades, there has been a growing trend of using greenbelt plans for trails, parks, preserves, and wetlands around water bodies. Although these plans mitigate some environmental impacts, their ability to address equity and justice needs to be examined to ensure that …

Powering Up: Examining Frameworks For Community Engagement And Collective Tenant Action Around Energy Efficiency In New Haven, Ct, Alixandra P. Rachman

Academic Articles

Energy is an essential household need to sustain health and wellbeing. Connecticut has one of the highest energy costs in the nation and leaves a majority of residents experiencing energy insecurity, where households are not able to meet their energy needs. Energy efficiency retrofits have been introduced as an effective solution to sustain thermal comfort indoors. Despite increased funding and resources for energy efficiency, federal and state programs continue to go widely unused by tenants for several reasons from health and safety barriers, tenant-landlord power imbalances, and administrative challenges to name a few. This thesis aims to describe Connecticut’s energy …

Creating A Web Resource On Sense Of Belonging For Underrepresented Occupational Therapy Students In Graduate Programs, Owen Uyiosa Lawani

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Underrepresented students (URS) in graduate occupational therapy (OT) programs often struggle with a sense of not belonging due to a lack of representation in their cohort and curriculum. This has been evident among students who are from racial/ethnic backgrounds, first-generation college students (FGCS), and have had low-income experiences. Research has shown that a sense of belonging (SB) is important for URS' ability to cope with everyday stressors in higher education. This capstone project focused on developing a web-based resource addressing the perceived SB among URS in graduate OT programs. Data was collected from participants at the University of Nevada Las Vegas …

A Case Study On Examining Systemic African American Poverty In Caddo Parish And Bossier Parish, Louisiana, Stephen Pinkney

Dissertations (2016-Present)

There are many states, counties, and cities in the United States of America where people do not have access to basic necessities such as food, housing, proper medical facilities, access to schools, and ready or no transportation, etc. The reason for this situation is due to the issue of poverty. Poverty is an unacceptably low-standard way of life that is a complex human phenomenon. It has multiple causes, manifestations, and dimensions. (Odhiambo, Omiti, Muthaka, 2005) Caddo Parish, Louisiana, is such a place that has high poverty among Black people. The population of African American people in Caddo Parish is larger …

Closing The Loop Of Food Systems: Analyzing Compost Within Community Bounds, Ellen A. Getter May 2023

Closing The Loop Of Food Systems: Analyzing Compost Within Community Bounds, Ellen A. Getter

Honors Theses

The aim of this thesis is to construct a philosophical and ecological argument that places great value on localized food systems in terms of waste. This composition develops the claim that building composting infrastructure on a community scale will curb the global climate crisis and enhance the interconnectedness humans have within themselves, each other, and the natural world. The first prong of this thesis entails a theoretical framework we must function under in order to implement such radical food revolutions in our communities informed by Buddhist principles. This proceeds an international case study of the composting infrastructure of Fort Albany …

Socioeconomic Vulnerability: Qualitative Findings From Climate Change Data In California, Evan Martinez May 2023

Socioeconomic Vulnerability: Qualitative Findings From Climate Change Data In California, Evan Martinez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Climate Change has existed as an important focus in the science community for decades, however relevant literature often focuses on environmental viewpoints more so than those of a socioeconomic perspective. In 2023, an increase in severe weather and unexpected weather events across the United States shed light onto the shortcomings of our preparedness and mitigation techniques. Particularly in California, flooding, sea level rise, and drought conditions have led to high rates of population displacement, economic inequality, and health/safety risks. These events pose the questions as to how climate change and its related natural disasters can potentially affect the average California …

Impacts Of Climate Change In The United States, Nathan Thompson May 2023

Impacts Of Climate Change In The United States, Nathan Thompson

Ballard Brief

While every country both contributes to and feels the effects of climate change, the United States' heavy influence and high rates of contribution make this problem even more acute domestically. Climate change is primarily driven by human emission of greenhouse gases through the burning of fossil fuels and from mass-scale agriculture. Because climate change can be a polarizing issue, passing legislation to slow the harmful contributing factors has proven difficult. The effects of climate change have worsened in the past few decades, with increased instances of wildfires and extreme shifts in weather patterns. These negative consequences disproportionately affect vulnerable people …

Ireland V. United States: Agricultural And Environmental Sustainability Policies, Lauryn O'Grady May 2023

Ireland V. United States: Agricultural And Environmental Sustainability Policies, Lauryn O'Grady

Accounting Undergraduate Honors Theses

The United States and Ireland have varying practices to achieve similar objectives in regard to environmental sustainability. While the European Union has maintained and updated a uniform policy throughout its existence--the Common Agricultural Policy--the United States instead created short-term solutions to a long-term problem. Not only does the United States tend to solve issues in the short-term, the policies between agricultural production and environmental sustainability are not necessarily aligned or remotely relative to the other. While the United States’ new Global Food Security Strategy implements parts of both agricultural and environmental sustainability, much of the history was not based off …

Contrasting Public And Private Approaches To Private Land Conservation In The United States: Local Government, Land Trust, And Landowner Viewpoints, Anna Overby May 2023

Contrasting Public And Private Approaches To Private Land Conservation In The United States: Local Government, Land Trust, And Landowner Viewpoints, Anna Overby

All Dissertations

In the United States (US), low-density, non-contiguous development, termed sprawl, has long been of widespread concern. Since the 1970s, rural residential sprawl, or exurban sprawl, has grown faster than any other development pattern. Exurban sprawl is development beyond the urban/suburban fringe with ties to the urban environment, such as employment and consumption, rather than to rural economies. Exurban sprawl is highly consumptive of land and has implications for conservation, natural resource management, agriculture, and communities. This study explores two main avenues of exurban sprawl prevention in the US: voluntary conservation easements and local government growth management regulations. The use of …

Catalytic Water Photolysis For Generating Renewable Hydrogen Fuel, Dr. Niveditha Nanda May 2023

Catalytic Water Photolysis For Generating Renewable Hydrogen Fuel, Dr. Niveditha Nanda

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Modern advances have enabled rapid industrialization and urbanization. However, the consequences of global modernization have included significant pollution to the air and water resources. Consequently, many changes to energy use must come to address and mitigate damages to our future. Solar energy derived hydrogen gas is a clean, renewable fuel that does not produce carbon dioxide or other pollutants. My research investigates the use of heterogeneous photocatalysis, by focusing on solar photochemical energy conversion, which is the making of hydrogen from water using sunlight. The production of clean, renewable hydrogen fuel will enable the utilization of low-cost, pollution-free energy resources …

Toward A More Holistic Understanding Of Uranium-Related Views And Experiences Of Residents In The Four Corners Region Of The United States, Matthew J. Barnett

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Research on rural Four Corners Region (FCR) residents’ views about uranium production has focused mainly on predominately-White communities in the northern portion of the region. Meanwhile, residents in the southern part of the region, which includes the Navajo Nation and other tribal nations and communities, have dealt with the worst environmental and health effects of the uranium boom. Through a series of three studies in the southern part of the FCR, I explore the uranium-related views and experiences of racially diverse FCR residents.

In the first paper of this dissertation, I used 53 interviews to explore how sociodemographic factors (e.g., …

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Who do we aim to educate with primate conservation education programs (PCEPs)? In a commentary published in a recent AJP, Annette Lanjouw suggested that many efforts to “educate” habitat-country communities can be neocolonial in their approaches. Forest destruction and habitat loss are a result of global consumption and expansion. We therefore need to approach conservation education from many angles including local stakeholders, policy makers, government officials, and the humans living in industrialized nations who are major consumers of the items that shrink primate habitats. In this review, we investigate PCEPs to determine if the conservation education goals, education methods, and …

The Optimization Of Microtransit In Houston Suburban Outer Ring Ii Transit Deserts., Jamaal Schoby May 2023

The Optimization Of Microtransit In Houston Suburban Outer Ring Ii Transit Deserts., Jamaal Schoby

Dissertations (2016-Present)

During the past decade, urban cities have been inundated with a plethora of on-demand smartphone enabled transportation services including ridesoucring, ridesplitting, and most recently microtransit. At the same time, local governments are accentuating the gentrification of blighted central city neighborhoods. While the revitalization is causing an increase in the tax base and property values, the adverse impacts are resulting in rising housing cost and the displacement of socio-economic disadvantaged African Americans. A mounting body of research is finding this demographic group migrating outward to suburban low-density spatially fragmented areas for affordable housing. However, transit coverage and supply are minimal to …
