Ecological Attunement: Exploring Eco-Informed Clinical Supervision, Ari C. Bonagofski
Ecological Attunement: Exploring Eco-Informed Clinical Supervision, Ari C. Bonagofski
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This dissertation examined what constitutes eco-informed clinical supervision, identified its essential components, described its practical implementation, and analyzed how it expands systemic practice. The lack of attention climate- and nature-related issues receive in the couple and family therapy field coupled with the climate crisis and disconnection from nature create a gap in training and care for those experiencing ecological distress. Clinical supervision is one method of addressing this issue by teaching and developing competence working with climate- and nature-related issues. Using a modified three-part Delphi methodology, this study included two surveys followed by an optional individual interview. Panelists agreed on …

Repositioning Traditional Authority To Fight Illegal Gold Mining In Dunkwa-Offin In The Upper Denkyira East Municipal District Of The Central Region Of Ghana, Manaseh Mawufemor Mintah
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Ghana is endowed with valuable mineral resources, including gold, diamonds, and manganese. However, the country has struggled to manage these resources in a way that benefits the broader population. Illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, has become a persistent national concern. This practice involves the unauthorized extraction of mineral ore by individuals and groups operating without formal government authorization. The town of Dunkwa-Offin exemplifies the severe social and ecological consequences of galamsey, where livelihoods, public health, and environmental sustainability are increasingly compromised. This study examines the potential role of traditional authorities in Dunkwa-Offin in combating illegal small-scale mining, also …
Indigenous Wisdom For Regeneration: Reducing The Knowledge Gap, Sandra Wooltorton
Indigenous Wisdom For Regeneration: Reducing The Knowledge Gap, Sandra Wooltorton
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The author of this paper uses Indigenous-informed literature and explores the use of a Multispecies Collaboratory to hear place-based voices and practice ways of knowing often denied value by the mainstream. In the Indigenous nation of Australia, the author sets out to learn ways to practice environmental education that build upon aeons of experience at caring for and responding to Country. The starting point is a 2024 paper with three claims, which are: a culture of epistemic violence and denial support the mainstream paradigm which silences Indigenous voices; an Indigenous-informed way of being with living-places can inform the core of …

Dear Annette…….: Learning Through Our Letters, Mindy Blaise, Leanda Mason
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Feminist environmental educational researcher Annette Gough’s recently published book Gender and Environmental Education is a collection of articles that have been foundational to the field of feminist environmental education. This paper shows how two feminist scholars creatively reviewed this book relationally. In doing so, reading, writing, and citational practices were reinvented to create room for generating multiple knowledge relations and connections. Our review demonstrates how letter writing may be used as a form of collective field-building. We invite readers to consider how collective field-building can be made possible through creative and careful reading practices.

Meteorology, Weather And War In South East Asia: Malaya C. 1940-1960, Fiona Williamson
Meteorology, Weather And War In South East Asia: Malaya C. 1940-1960, Fiona Williamson
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This article interrogates the positioning of British colonial meteorology in Malaysia and Singapore from the 1940s to 1960. This period spanned a global conflict and an internecine war, effecting profound sociopolitical changes from which neither Malaysia nor Singapore would emerge the same. The meteorological services were essential to Britain's armed conflicts, providing vital weather information to the army, navy and, especially, the air forces, as well as supporting the aviation and shipping industry often in difficult and dangerous circumstances. This article argues that British military policy in South East Asia and the specific concerns of the colonial government in Malaya …

Confronting The Seaport Resilience Gap: Incentives, Frameworks, And Case Studies For Enhancing Resilience To Natural Hazards In Port Planning And Policy, Rosemarie Fusco
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the critical issue of seaport resilience, focusing on the gaps in resilience planning and the role of incentives in motivating resilience investment. The research arc addresses the question: What incentivizes seaports to increase natural hazard resilience (NHR)? It is organized into three interconnected manuscripts, each examining distinct aspects of the problem.
The first manuscript critically examines the resilience planning approaches of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) as outlined in their National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), highlighting the limited consideration of seaports despite their critical role in economic and social connectivity. SIDS offer critical insight into seaport resilience due …

Streamlining Wildlife Regulation, Robert L. Fischman
Streamlining Wildlife Regulation, Robert L. Fischman
Articles by Maurer Faculty
A recent burst of revisions in the bedrock regulations governing projects that may adversely affect wildlife represents a generational shift in policy. Streamlining federal decision -making drove much of this reform. Streamlining offers a path to address climate change without abandoning a longstanding commitment to wildlife conservation. The conservation community recognizes the need to build new infrastructure to reduce the rate of climate change through air emissions. The most urgent priority is decarbonizing the electrical ~rid through renewable energy generation and a better transmission network. Adaptation to the "new abnormal" of climate-driven environmental disruption demands federal approvals for a host …
Climate Prosecution As Climate Regulation, Cindy J. Cho
Climate Prosecution As Climate Regulation, Cindy J. Cho
Articles by Maurer Faculty
Last term, the Supreme Court weakened the federal government’s ability to regulate. Three new decisions—and one landmark case from the previous term—will affect everything from drug approvals to overtime pay to national security. One issue stands out as a political flashpoint that will prove particularly difficult to address via regulation in the wake of this term: climate change. Given the unlikelihood of congressional climate action any time soon, those concerned about the risks of a warming planet will no doubt be looking for alternatives to regulation. Private and state civil lawsuits against polluters reflect an important legal tradition that must …
Quantifying Subsurface Pavement Temperatures Subject To Future Climates And Implications For Pavement Resilience, Austin Michael Jarrell
Quantifying Subsurface Pavement Temperatures Subject To Future Climates And Implications For Pavement Resilience, Austin Michael Jarrell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Assessment of anthropogenic climate change impacts in pavement design and analysis remains limited within engineering practice, despite growing recognition of the need for climate-resilient roadway infrastructure. Research efforts have increasingly focused on integrating future climate projections into mechanistic-empirical pavement design, which represents the leading edge of the state of practice. However, a lack of consensus persists regarding the optimal methods for incorporating climate projections, particularly in the selection of downscaling techniques and global climate models (GCMs) to ensure accuracy and applicability for pavement performance analysis. This research investigates the impact of statistical downscaling methodologies and GCM selection routines on subsurface …
White Paper And Black Water: Environmental Control Of Labor In Appalachian Paper Mill Communities, Matthew C. Powell
White Paper And Black Water: Environmental Control Of Labor In Appalachian Paper Mill Communities, Matthew C. Powell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In several small Appalachian communities, the West Virginia Pulp & Paper Company dominated the local landscape. The company stripped the mountainsides of spruce trees for pulpwood and used rivers for industrial processes and waste disposal. The small towns along these rivers and between these mountains relied on paper mills for employment. Corporate control over the natural environment, and water more specifically, was a necessary requirement for paper production, but also acted as a source of power over employees and their communities. When paper workers sought to organize, the company responded by leveraging their control over the environment against them to …

Penneast Pipeline And The Policy Implications Of The Private Use Of Eminent Domain, Emily C. Wood
Georgia Law Review
This Note considers the modern implications of the takings power in light of PennEast Pipeline Co. v. New Jersey, a 2021 U.S. Supreme Court decision holding that states do not have the right to exercise state sovereign immunity against private parties holding congressionally delegated authority. Against current environmental conditions and recent takings power history, this Note then examines the delegation power of Congress and the public policy implications of the present administrative scheme—as compared to the typical exercise of the federal eminent domain power. Finally, this Note argues that the current administrative scheme ultimately removes important decisions impacting local …

Beyond The Possible: Climate Justice, Global Citizenship, And Classrooms – Speculative Essays, Amanda C. Fanelli
Beyond The Possible: Climate Justice, Global Citizenship, And Classrooms – Speculative Essays, Amanda C. Fanelli
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation examines the potential of speculative essays as pedagogical tools to inspire K-12 educators to integrate climate justice education within their classrooms, utilizing the framework of Global Citizenship Education (GCE). While climate change is often presented in schools as a scientific or technical issue, the literature on environmental justice demonstrates that climate change is inextricably linked to systemic inequities rooted in race, gender, colonialism, and economic oppression (Bullard, 2000; Shiva, 1988; Whyte, 2017). Yet educators frequently lack accessible, integrative frameworks for addressing these intersections in their teaching without overhauling existing curricula. This study addresses that gap by triangulating ecopedagogy, …

Educating more students about ecology and its beneficial applications to societal issues is urgent yet challenging. To address this challenge, diversifying ecology education is a key way to make ecology more inclusive, accessible, and interdisciplinary for more people than ever. Advancing this goal requires ecology educators to develop a more expansive view of (1) how to engage more diverse undergraduate students in ecology courses, especially those from historically underrepresented groups and non-majors, (2) the interdisciplinarity of content in those courses, and (3) the learner-centered pedagogies used to engage students. We suggest ways that ecologists can advance “ecology education for everyone” …
A Mixed Methods Approach To Improve Understanding Of Marine Plastic Debris In Rhode Island, Georgia Cheney
A Mixed Methods Approach To Improve Understanding Of Marine Plastic Debris In Rhode Island, Georgia Cheney
Open Access Master's Theses
The marine plastic debris problem, brought to people's attention in the 1970s, has been a growing environmental challenge. It is estimated today that society produces 400 million tonnes of plastic every year. Of the plastic produced, only a small percentage of the plastic is successfully recycled and reused. It is important to better understand people's perceptions of marine plastic debris, so policy makers can better define the problem, develop effective policies, and gain policy support. This study aims to fill a gap in knowledge around Rhode Islander’s perceptions of the marine plastic debris problem.

Using a quantitative content analysis of 46 policy documents, the study evaluates five core dimensions: depth of discussion, clarity of language, inclusiveness of marginalized groups, action-oriented language, and environmental justice considerations. The research reveals significant interagency disparities, with …
Existential Resilience In The City, Shane Ray Epting
Existential Resilience In The City, Shane Ray Epting
Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works
Severe weather continues to challenge cities worldwide. Typhoons, wildfires, floods, and extreme temperatures test urban systems, communities, and governments at all scales. To combat such effects, resilience has emerged as a term geared towards increasing their ability to address impacts, strengthen infrastructure, and deal with cleanup measures. Although this business sounds straightforward to non-philosophers, ethical and existential elements remain out of view for the sciences and require investigation. This article fleshes them out. The first step is to identify relevant stakeholder groups and competing interests. The second is discovering equitable ways to bring professionals and city dwellers together to develop …

Three Essays On Addressing Conflicts And Consensus During Energy Transitions, Paul Inseok Jo
Three Essays On Addressing Conflicts And Consensus During Energy Transitions, Paul Inseok Jo
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Addressing the current climate crisis becomes more urgent, but also controversial. This is because the move toward a renewable energy system tends to produce new winners and losers by generating disproportionate outcomes across different stakeholders. Given this context, more actors and organizations are engaged in the policymaking process of energy transitions while competing or cooperating to defend their interests and values. Therefore, it is pivotal to understand these dynamic interactions to achieve a just transition based upon energy justice. This research thus strives to respond to this research question: How can different coalitions and stakeholders reach consensus by mitigating tensions …

Climate change is one of the most important challenges in the world today. Communities and decision makers at many levels, from local to international, are working to ensure that energy, water, and other societal infrastructures can transition and adapt to address climate change (IPCC, 2023). One major mitigation strategy involves the decarbonization of energy systems (Rockström et al. 2017). Despite wide recognition of the need to decarbonize globally, renewable energy infrastructures and technologies are often locally controversial, involving claims of environmental injustice and disputes over land and water (Cantor, Turley, and Maxfield 2023; Jerez, Garcés, and Torres 2021; Turley et …
