Immersive Modeling To Communicate And Manage Risks Of Water Shortages, David Rosenberg, Erki Porse
Immersive Modeling To Communicate And Manage Risks Of Water Shortages, David Rosenberg, Erki Porse
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Our project goal is to use immersive online collaborative modeling as a tool for active learning to communicate and manage users conflicting risks of water shortages because decisions now to manage risk effect future risk. State-of-the art river basin forecasting tools provide probabilistic estimates of streamflow at hourly to annual scales. Water resource models quantify tradeoffs and risk across hundreds or thousands of scenarios of inflow and demand forecast out decades. Our project objectives are: 1) Formulate extreme scenarios for reservoir inflows without probabilities one to three years out that pose imminent risk of water shortages. 2) Hold immersive model …

At first glance, indigenous people and international trade appear to be two separate issues. However, this perception does not apply in the case of European Regulation 2023/1115. This study aims to provide an understanding of how Indonesia should respond to the EU DFR, which has affected Indonesia’s national interests in protecting indigenous people. This study applied a normative method through doctrinal and conceptual approaches to achieve the objective. The study covers two main discussions. The first explains how due diligence under the EU DFR has indirectly pushed Indonesia to become an EU trading partner and provide more excellent protection for …

Any products of origin with their reputation, quality, and characteristics provide various benefits for their producers and consumers. The producers can have economic, ecological, socio-cultural, and legal benefits. The consumers can hold product quality and guarantee of origin, as well as legal guarantee for counterfeiting product. The study focused on the optimization of economic benefits in the protection of Geographical Indication. Producers do not immediately receive these benefits because they are related to the starting point for registration of different geographical indications among products. The purpose of this study is to formulate a strategy to maximize the benefits of geographical …
Climate Change Demands Free Markets, Glen Lyons
Climate Change Demands Free Markets, Glen Lyons
Journal of New Finance
William Nordhaus won a Nobel Prize for work on the economics of climate change. He advocated for the government policy of carbon pricing arguing that climate is a public good, free riders undermine action, there are unpriced negative externalities, and individuals can’t slow climate change. Nordhaus assumes that climate science is certain enough to design effective policy. This paper challenges that thinking and shows that individuals can and ARE slowing climate change. I will also review the risks of government policy, highlight the uncertainty in present day climate science, and conclude by showing that free markets are the best “policy”.

Balancing Construction Costs And Environmental And Social Performances In High-Rise Urban Development: A Generative Urban Design Approach, Peng Du, Geoffrey Little, Erick Romero
Balancing Construction Costs And Environmental And Social Performances In High-Rise Urban Development: A Generative Urban Design Approach, Peng Du, Geoffrey Little, Erick Romero
College of Architecture and the Built Environment Faculty Papers
The urban design process is complex and interdisciplinary, especially in the context of high-density cities with high-rise buildings. The design of high-rise buildings requires input from a variety of stakeholders in the city, who often represent conflicting requirements and interests. However, conventional design approaches struggle to address this complexity. This study introduced a generative urban design approach and applied it to a case study for high-rise urban development in Guangzhou, China. Specifically, 7500 urban forms were generated with variables such as street networks, block offset, building typology, and green space, and then were evaluated and optimized via multi-objective evolutionary algorithms. …

Integrating Planetary Health Into Public Health Education For Sustainable Healthcare Practices, Eman Aboualy
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Integrating planetary health in public health education became an urgent global call for action since the WHO announced that the climate change and environmental degradation are the most threat facing the humanity in the recent decades (1). According to that, many countries are developing strategies for counteracting and mitigating the impact of climate change and restore the planetary health. These strategies are including policy drafting and preparing their public health professionals to recognize and address the health effects of environmental change, promote practices for sustainable healthcare. Although Egypt is formulating different policies to cope with and respond to the …

Tfpa, Wildfire Mitigation, And The Dissemination Of Indigenous Knowledge, Lauren Palmer
Tfpa, Wildfire Mitigation, And The Dissemination Of Indigenous Knowledge, Lauren Palmer
Pace Environmental Law Review
The United States is experiencing a multitude of environmental issues across the country, including increasingly frequent and disastrous wildfires. Simultaneously, Indigenous persons are demanding their right to self-sovereignty and working to preserve intergenerational Indigenous Knowledge including cultural burning practices. Cultural burning is a practice of many Indigenous tribes that help environments and the species that comprise them, foster and grow. To further help tribes with their mission in keeping Indigenous Knowledge alive and to reduce the frequency and severity of destructive wildfires, this article argues the federal government should amend federal acts to provide Indigenous tribes with a greater opportunity …

Menstruation And Menopause As Reproductive Justice Issues: Feminist Reflections On Activism, Research, And Policy From The Global Movement’S Scottish Hub, Bettina Bildhauer, Marcy L. Karin
Journal of International Women's Studies
This feminist reflection asserts that menstruation and menopause are elements of reproductive justice that are often overlooked due to menstrual taboos. Drawing on their experiences in Scotland, which has recently been a global hub for menstrual activism, policymaking, and research, the authors identify salient current challenges in menstrual and menopausal justice. They detail how these were met in Scotland and what work remains outstanding, and they summarize recommendations for future policymaking, research, and activism.

Religious Moral Suasion And Material Support For The Environmental Justice Movement, Sarah Elizabeth Nahar
International Journal on Responsibility
The Environmental Justice (EJ) movement in the United States is comprised of diverse groups of people with a variety of environmental grievances and interests coming together to obtain equal distribution of pollution burdens across communities, reduce environmental hazards, and ensure fair enforcement of laws and policies meant to safeguard the environment for all. The 17 Principles of Environmental Justice developed in 1991 at the First National People of Color Environmental Leadership Summit remains a touchstone document today. In addition to Indigenous and Black leadership, religious communities also made the Summit possible. Religious adherents and institutions have always influenced the movement …

Restoring The Soul To Birthing In Miami: A Call For Justice For Obstetric Racism In Miami–Dade County, Jordan Brooks, Jamarah Amani, Sannisha Dale, Dr. Karen A. Scott
University of Miami Race & Social Justice Law Review
For far too many Black mothers and birthing people, U.S. hospitals are dangerous and fail to keep our Black mothers and birthing people and their babies safe, alive, and thriving during and after childbirth. The confluence of medical racism and obstetric violence—obstetric racism—leads to a disproportionate rate of predictable, preventable, and unfair death, sickness, and trauma for Black birthing people and babies in the afterlife of slavery. Obstetric racism, as defined by Davis, is both an analytic and phenomenon that describes mechanisms of subordination, control, and dominance to which Black mothers and birthing people are subjected by health systems and …

Plc-Controlled Intelligent Conveyor System With Ai-Enhanced Vision Of Efficient Waste Sorting, Natheer Almtireen, Nathir Rawashdeh, Viraj Reddy, Max Sutton, Alexander Nedvidek, Caden Karn, Et. Al.
Michigan Tech Publications
Current waste sorting mechanisms, particularly those relying on manual processes, semi-automated systems, or technologies without Artificial Intelligence (AI) integration, are hindered by inefficiencies, inaccuracies, and limited scalability, reducing their effectiveness in meeting growing waste management demands. This study introduces a prototype waste sorting machine that integrates an AI-driven vision system with a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) for high-accuracy automated waste sorting. The system, powered by the YOLOv8 deep learning model, achieved sorting accuracies of 88% for metal cans, 75% for paper, and 91% for plastic bottles, with an overall precision of 90%, a recall of 80%, and a mean average …
