"Guided By A Global Perspective": The Global Teaching Practices Of Social Work Faculty, Janine M. Speiser
"Guided By A Global Perspective": The Global Teaching Practices Of Social Work Faculty, Janine M. Speiser
Social Work Doctoral Dissertations
The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) states that the social work profession is guided by a global perspective and the enhancement of life for all people, both locally and globally. Per the CSWE Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (2022 EPAS), the social work curriculum of an integrated program includes global content that is specifically related to racism, oppression, and policy. However, literature suggests that the incorporation of global content into social work education has been slow, sparse, and siloed. The purpose of this study was to explore the extent to which social work faculty have integrated global content from …
Climate Change Adaptation Through Economic Democracy, Shriraksha Mohan
Climate Change Adaptation Through Economic Democracy, Shriraksha Mohan
Best Integrated Writing
Mohan investigates and combines three different areas of literature and social movements to discuss the problem of climate change and economic adaptation. The value of this work is that it can be used to communicate among three independent types of social movements and inquiries. This can strengthen and connect dispersed yet overlapping efforts in addressing work issues, resource utilization, economic governance and participation, and ecological problems economies face today.

The Health And Human Cost Of Illegal Refinery In Port Harcourt Metropolis: A Public Health Perspective, Akuchinyere Onyinyechukwu Titus Okpanachi, Wuraola Awosan
Liberty University Research Week
Illegal crude oil refining, also known as "kpo-fire," has become a significant environmental and public health crisis in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, due to its socioeconomic, environmental, and health impacts. This illegal refinery results in significant environmental pollution in Port Harcourt. The pollution contaminates air, water, and soil, causing respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, neurological damage, reproductive issues, lung cancers, and death. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports seven million untimely deaths annually due to air pollution diseases at the global level. In 2019, Nigeria had the highest number of air pollution-related child pneumonia deaths in the world, with an overall figure …
The Importance Of Wild Birds, Janice H. Cox
The Importance Of Wild Birds, Janice H. Cox
Nexus – UNEP – Animal Welfare, Environment, Sustainable Development
Wild birds are important in their own right, for their contribution to human wellbeing, and for their ecological value, as part of the “web of life”. Birds are sentient beings with complex thinking and social behaviors, and the ability to experience positive and negative feelings, including suffering. The ways in which birds contribute to the functioning of the world's ecosystems include: pest control, pollination, cleaning up nature, spreading seeds, keeping coral reefs alive and transforming landscapes. Yet wild bird populations are declining dramatically – with one in eight bird species threatened with extinction. Birds are one of the most important …
Personal Narrative As Pedagogy: A Model For Socially Responsive Narrative-Based Education In Occupational Therapy, Johnna Belkiewitz, Sally Wasmuth
Personal Narrative As Pedagogy: A Model For Socially Responsive Narrative-Based Education In Occupational Therapy, Johnna Belkiewitz, Sally Wasmuth
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
The practice of occupational therapy relies on the collection and analysis of life narratives to provide responsive client-centered care. As developing holistic practitioners, occupational therapy students are taught to consider these shared stories within a larger context of historical and societal systems by acknowledging such factors as social determinants of health. Case studies are a frequently used tool to teach these skills; however, evidence supports that the identities of these educational stories’ authors can influence which perspectives are shared and, ultimately, impact developing occupational therapists’ perpetuation of or opposition to existing systems of oppression. Critical Race Theory and qualitative methodology …

Below I describe five intentional practices people working in human-facing professions can employ in order to create the conditions for a healthy democracy.
These practices were originally distilled from my observations at the Deaconess Foundation’s Helsinki D-Stations and from my interactions and discussions with professionals across the Foundation’s Civic Action and Community Programs team from January-June 2023, when I was hosted by the Deaconess Foundation on a Mid-Career Professional Development Award from the Fulbright Finland Foundation. Since then, I have augmented and clarified these practices through observation and reflection with colleagues in my American context, where I am the executive …
Between The Land And The Sea: Belizean Voices In Environmental Governance, Kris-An K. Hinds
Between The Land And The Sea: Belizean Voices In Environmental Governance, Kris-An K. Hinds
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Coastal communities around the world are at the epicenter of dynamic socio-environmental transformations driven by the impacts of climate change, shifting human–more-than-human environmental relationships, and the decisions made in response to these challenges. As environmental concerns intensify, the governance decisions made to address these impacts will determine the severity of the impacts and the future of affected coastal areas. In regions such as the Caribbean, Central America, and Latin America, environmental governance is complicated by uneven power dynamics, historical legacies of racialized environmental spaces, and the ongoing challenge of balancing national economic growth with environmental preservation. These transformations are not …

After The Economic Downfall At The Coastal Frontier: A Portrait Of Women Persisting Amidst Sea Abrasion In Northern Bekasi, Muhammad R. A. Ghifari, Gilang Mahadika
Antropologi Indonesia
This article explores the socio-environmental transformations in Muara Gembong, a coastal frontier in northern Bekasi, Indonesia, that once thrived as a hub for shrimp and milkfish farming but is now grappling with environmental degradation and economic decline. By drawing on feminist political ecology (FPE), the study examines how women in the region have adapted to the deteriorating environment, driven by coastal erosion, mangrove loss, and the collapse of fish pond businesses. While men traditionally dominated the local economy as aquaculturists, women have assumed critical roles in sustaining household livelihoods through creative economic activities, such as weaving wlingi laut (Cyperus malaccensis) …

Core Climate & Health Competencies For Physicians Across The Continuum In An Ever Warming World, Deborah Simpson, Anne Getzin, Aaron Levy, Syndey Warner, Marie Cabiya, Kjersti Knox, Climate And Health Medical Education Task Force Of The Advocate Health Environmental Action Council
Aurora GME
Background: Climate change impacts on patients’ health and sustainability is a topic emerging in medical education. >50% medical schools have some climate related curriculum but inclusion in GME-CPD programs is limited. Several groups (eg, Global Consortium on Climate and Health Education) have published core competencies on climate and health across professions to guide action but are often extensive and without “where to start” guidance. For example, GCCHE’s document contains 4 competency domains, 25 concepts and 2-8 learning objectives for each concept!
Objective: To identify minimum competencies for all physicians across the continuum of medical education who provide direct care to …

Environmental Education Professionals And K-12 School Counselors: Collaboration For Engaging The Conservation And Natural Resources Workforce Of The Next Generation, Brent M. Erb
Education Doctorate Dissertations
Environmental education (EE) professionals often fail to reflect the diverse, intersectional identities of the students and communities they serve. As frontline professionals among the conservation and natural resources (CNR) professions, addressing this requisite and urgent disparity is vital for fostering equitable teaching and learning environments that are safe, welcoming, accessible, and inclusive. EE professionals play a pivotal role in filling knowledge gaps, fostering ecological literacy, and introducing students to CNR careers, just as K-12 school counselors play a meaningful role in helping students expand upon their interests and acquire experience and skills to cultivate self-efficacy to support the belief in …
Risk, Vulnerability, And Resilience In “Natural” Disasters: A Hurricane Katrina Case Study, Scarlett Oaks '25
Risk, Vulnerability, And Resilience In “Natural” Disasters: A Hurricane Katrina Case Study, Scarlett Oaks '25
Honor Scholar Theses
With the rapid rate of climate change, major weather events and natural disasters are predicted to become more commonplace. An understanding of the factors to a community’s economic and social rebuilding can foster resilience against future disasters, even with a changing climate and the slow implementation of climate policy. Hurricane Katrina caused billions of dollars in damages and nearly 2,000 casualties when the storm reached New Orleans in 2005. The lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina can inform resilience efforts and identify gaps in preparedness and protection. An investigation of the historical inequalities that persisted in New Orleans reveals that neoliberal …
A Woman's Place In Politics: The Effects Of Gendered Politics On A Global Level, Aruhi Kodeboyina
A Woman's Place In Politics: The Effects Of Gendered Politics On A Global Level, Aruhi Kodeboyina
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Women have been denied equality, especially with respect to their male counterparts. Feminism is the theory that seeks to explain this by the norms, beliefs, and societal pressure by which women have been excluded. One predominant realm in which women have been excluded is politics. Although there has been a rise in female politicians across the world, they continue to face the same stereotypes as before. Thus, this study delves into the implications of having more female leaders, looking more specifically at liberal feminist international relations theory. By reviewing literature, this study finds that female leaders impact a variety of …
Exit Strategy: How Methods Of Gaining Independence From European Colonial Powers Impact Development In Post-Colonial African Nations, Sophia Wehle
Undergraduate Student Symposium
How does the way a colony gains independence from its power impact that colony’s future development? It is well documented that being a former colony has an impact on how a nation develops once they are independent, however, what is not clear is if a nation’s development is impacted by the way they separate from their colonial power. This paper argues that there is a correlation between the way a colony gains their independence and how developed they are. For the sake of this research three main ways of gaining independence will be considered: though violent resistance, peaceful negotiations, or …

Comparative Genomics Across Streptomyces Murinus Strains To Identify Biosynthetic Gene Cluster For Antifungal Metabolite 'Pentamycin', Nitish Dundigalla, Ashley Bran Sampson, Smrithi Mukund, Melianni Terrero Terrero
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Streptomyces are filamentous, Gram-positive bacteria in the phylum Actinobacteria that are known to produce a diverse array of antimicrobial metabolites. A Streptomyces murinus strain SPC1, contains a 15- gene biosynthetic gene cluster (BGC) that produces an antifungal metabolite ‘pentamycin’ (fungichromin), and is shown to exhibit antimicrobial activity against fungal pathogens of palms1. Using SPC1 strain as a reference, we analyzed the conservation of BGCs across 17 other S. murinus strains. A specialized bioinformatics analysis tool, antiSMASH2 , was used to identify and annotate BGCs that produce pentamycin. Pairwise comparison of the 15 genes comprising the pentamycin cluster …

To address this, the research team collaborated to explore NSU's current policies on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB), Title IX, protocols for names and pronouns, housing and bathroom accommodations, advocacy processes, and student organizations across these campus offices. These findings led to the creation of the NSU Resource Guide for Gender Diverse Students (work in progress), which offers …
Investigation And Reclassification Of Gordonia Bacteriophage Protein Folding And Function With Google Deepmind's Alphafold Artificial Intellifence Software, Taylor Butler
Undergraduate Student Symposium
As the rapid evolution of multi-drug-resistant bacteria inflict public health and environmental crises, the need for alternatives to convention antibiotics is necessary. Bacteriophage (phage) interventions has resurfaced as a prospective avenue of study. However, these viruses that are capable of infecting and killing bacteria are widely undiscovered and lack genetic characterization. Current methods utilize bioinformatics and comparative tools to identify genes and protein functions. Unfortunately, functional classification of phage proteins is difficult with limited experimental data. As a result, functional assignments are often made on synteny using genetically similar bacteriophages. However, many proteins are assigned “hypothetical” functions as no comparative …
Paradise Lost And Character Motivation: Sinful Behavior Or Inferiority Complex?, Esperanza Barrios
Paradise Lost And Character Motivation: Sinful Behavior Or Inferiority Complex?, Esperanza Barrios
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Sin is a concept mainly viewed from a religious perspective. But, through Paradise Lost, John Milton brought a further understanding of human nature and one’s sense of committing what’s perceived as sinful behavior without the veil of religion glazing over academic understanding. In religious terms, sinful behavior is the idea of defying God’s commandments. Still, for this research, sinful behavior may be described as abnormal behavior that damages our best interests and relationships for selfish gains. Sin is also synonymous with the term criminality, the act of committing immoral or deviant acts. Each of Milton’s main characters, Satan, Adam, …

The Stability Of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids In Salmon Following Gamma Irradiation, Saya Seraj
The Stability Of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids In Salmon Following Gamma Irradiation, Saya Seraj
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), particularly omega-3 and omega-6, are essential nutrients for human health, with salmon being a significant dietary source. However, fish spoilage during refrigeration remains a concern. Gamma irradiation has been approved as a method to reduce bacteria in various foods such as chicken, beef, and shellfish, but it has yet to be approved for fish. To gain FDA approval, it is crucial to demonstrate that this process preserves the nutritional components, particularly PUFAs, in irradiated fish.
In this study, we investigate the effects of gamma irradiation on the PUFA content of salmon at doses of 0.5 kGy …

How Do Gamified Interventions Influence Long-Term Health Outcomes In Managing And Reducing The Progression Of Chronic Illnesses Among Children Under 18?, Taruni Singanamala, Mohit Belur, Jeremy Ignatius
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Despite the advancements in medical care, children below the age of 18 years and their parents or guardians face significant challenges in managing chronic diseases, such as strict treatment regimens with lifestyle modifications for effective management. Nutrition, exercise, and adherence to medication all prevent children from acquiring or assist them in managing a chronic illness. Recent studies have shown that gamifying these aspects makes these goals more attainable and could be the answer to encouraging children and their families. Gamified interventions show promise in improving behavioral adherence and longer-term health outcomes by including features such as rewards, challenges, and progress …
