Extracting Renewables: A Capabilities Approach To A Just Transition Crisis, Mateos Lozano May 2025

Extracting Renewables: A Capabilities Approach To A Just Transition Crisis, Mateos Lozano

Honors Theses

Extraction of cobalt and lithium is often regarded as necessary to facilitate a successful transition to renewable energy so that global warming can be limited to 2°C. At the same time, many current cobalt and lithium extraction practices contribute to environmental destruction, expose workers to toxic contaminants, and sometimes involve child labor. This thesis argues that cobalt and lithium extraction, if permissible, must be conducted in a manner compatible with the normative obligations of justice and fairness. I first explain notable differences between prominent types of cobalt and lithium extraction and note how each impacts people and the environment. Then, …

Honors Theses

This thesis compiles five case studies researched and completed during the 2023-2024 academic year, each exploring a different topic pertaining to the accounting profession today. With the guidance of Dr. Victoria Dickinson, professor at the University of Mississippi, these case studies were completed throughout the Accountancy 420 class to fulfill the research requirements of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College and the Patterson School of Accountancy. The first case emphasizes reliable international financial reporting, while exploring the exposure of fraudulent Chinese companies listed on U.S. stock exchanges that costed American investors billions of dollars. The second explores U.S. military spending …

Executive Watch: Zick On Executive Orders And Official Orthodoxies, Timothy Zick May 2025

Executive Watch: Zick On Executive Orders And Official Orthodoxies, Timothy Zick

Popular Media

During his first term as president, Donald Trump signaled that he was not committed to pluralism and expressive liberty when it came to matters like patriotism, public protest, and other forms of dissent. During his second term, Trump has issued multiple executive orders that attempt to impose official orthodoxies or understandings regarding race, gender, patriotism, and other subjects.

As we have seen, these edicts are not merely symbolic. The executive orders call for agency actions and criminal investigations, and place hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding at risk. The orders have affected what universities teach, which immigrants can …

Disparities In Exposure To Atmospheric Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Pahs) And Their Contributions To Breast Cancer Risks Among African American Women, Namuun Batbaatar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Exposure to atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) presents a ubiquitous public health risk and is often disproportionately high in disadvantaged communities. Understanding is still limited regarding the sources, disparities, and health effects of PAH exposures. This dissertation consists of three studies that address these knowledge gaps. The first study aimed to quantify the contributions of multiple exposure pathways to PAH-related cancer risks. Concentrations of PAHs in soil and air were measured in Memphis, TN, from 2016 to 2019. The cumulative cancer risk was 0.423×10-6 among children, with 75% from ingestion. For adults, the risk was 0.546×10-6, predominantly from dermal contact …

Women’S Stories Of/In Athens, Greece: Reflections For Future Cities, Christina Marouli May 2025

Women’S Stories Of/In Athens, Greece: Reflections For Future Cities, Christina Marouli

Journal of International Women's Studies

In a continuously urbanizing world, developing cities that support a good and full life for women—an issue with implications for families and communities at large—should be a concern in the planning of human settlements. This is particularly important for the transition to sustainable cities, which is a priority in most contemporary societies. This study focuses on women’s everyday lives in Athens, Greece, particularly the suburb of Nea Smyrni. It builds on the stories of five women shared through in-depth interviews that were conducted between spring 2023 and winter 2024. These stories have been selected because they represent women of diverse …

Identifying Predictors And Scorecard Ranking Systems For Deck Park Development, Archer J. Morrow May 2025

Identifying Predictors And Scorecard Ranking Systems For Deck Park Development, Archer J. Morrow

Planning Masters Professional Reports - Archive

This report uses geographic data to identify development predictors and assemble site-ranking scorecards for deck park development. Deck parks are an increasingly popular, if understudied, urban intervention often used to mitigate the effects of highway development, pedestrianized urban areas, and promote development. This research collected data from 19 parks across the United States using the American Community Survey and observed Geospatial Features to develop predictors that relate to deck park implementation measured in $/ft^2. Predictors were analyzed using Pearson correlation testing to assess if there was a significant correlation between certain variables. If a correlation was found, predictors were moved …

The State Of The Carbon Capture And Sequestration Industry In California In 2024: Challenges And Policy Solutions, Noah Jackson May 2025

The State Of The Carbon Capture And Sequestration Industry In California In 2024: Challenges And Policy Solutions, Noah Jackson

Pepperdine Policy Review

Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) is the process of capturing CO2 from an above-ground carbon source, transporting it to a sequestration well, and permanently sinking it deep underground. Despite California’s dependency on CCS to reach carbon neutrality, not one CCS project is operational yet in the state. This paper looks at the history and development of the CCS industry. It explores the following research questions: How do permitting, financing, CO2 transportation, and property rights affect the pace and scale of carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) development as a carbon dioxide removal (CDR) solution? Then, what policy changes are necessary as …

The Polarization Of Electric Vehicles In Partisan News Networks: An Analysis Of Cnn And Fox News, Francisco Moran, Matthew Gaon, Quinn J. Proudler, Casimir Wypyski May 2025

The Polarization Of Electric Vehicles In Partisan News Networks: An Analysis Of Cnn And Fox News, Francisco Moran, Matthew Gaon, Quinn J. Proudler, Casimir Wypyski

Pepperdine Policy Review

Due to the great leaps made within mass media, how people consume news, current events, and policy has drastically changed. It has become increasingly simple to succumb to confirmation bias and partisan views. This shift has stretched towards the framing of electric vehicles through mass media networks, including both CNN and Fox News. In this paper, we analyze what sentiment these two different news networks use to cover the discussion of electric vehicles. In particular, we ask: Does the sentiment of the media covering electric vehicles vary based on the partisan leaning of news outlets? Does the polarization of sentiment …

Biogenic Synthesis Of Metallic And Bimetallic Oxide Nanoparticles For Water Treatment Applications, Gunarani G.I May 2025

Biogenic Synthesis Of Metallic And Bimetallic Oxide Nanoparticles For Water Treatment Applications, Gunarani G.I

Theses and Dissertations

Access to clean water is a quality-of-life indicator. The availability of clean water apart from water scarcity is marred due to contamination by heavy metals and synthetic dyes, posing a grave environmental and public health challenge. This necessitates the implementation of advanced and sustainable treatment solutions towards water remediation. This research work focusses on the fabrication and application of biogenic and chemically synthesized metallic and bimetallic nanoparticles for the efficient removal of uranium, chromium, and toxic dyes from aqueous environments. The study particularly focuses on zero-valent (C-Fe and B-Fe) and bimetallic (C-NiFe and B-NiFe) nanoparticles, evaluating their adsorption capabilities and …

Urban Eden, Establishing The Groundwork For A More Resilient City, Max R. Oliva May 2025

Urban Eden, Establishing The Groundwork For A More Resilient City, Max R. Oliva

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Cities account for over 70% of Global C02 emissions and as these areas grow over time their Carbon Footprint will grow in turn. In order to offset this imbalance I propose to design Performative Skins & Building Modules to not only reduce the carbon footprint in these cities, but also recover their connection to Nature contributing not only to energy efficiency and air quality, but also to urban aesthetics, the inclusion of these systems could go so far as to help mitigate the heat island effect and in the long term help establish a more resilient and sustainable city

Assessing Implications Through General Strain Theory: Comparative Analysis Of Crime Rates In Flint And Pontiac Michigan, Jennifer Harrison May 2025

Assessing Implications Through General Strain Theory: Comparative Analysis Of Crime Rates In Flint And Pontiac Michigan, Jennifer Harrison

Honors Projects

Flint, Michigan suffered a city water change from the Great Lake’s Lake Huron water pipeline to an old system using the Flint River as the main source of water (Reuben, et al., 2022). The change took place in an effort to make budget cuts (Denchak, 2024). The switch occurred before checking the safety of the pipes, which were severely corroded (Reuben, et al., 2022). Lead poisoning and Legionnaires disease spread through the Flint community and the water was visibly not safe for use (Reuben, et al., 2022). The people of Flint experienced stress that they could not control. They feared …
