Comparative Outcomes Of Transcatheter Versus Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement In Elderly Patients With Severe Symptomatic Aortic Stenosis: A Systematic Review, Omar Hamodat, Saif Almuzainy, Salma Nizar
Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
Objectives: Aortic stenosis is the most common valvular heart disease globally; while transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has proven to be a competitive alternative to surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) and revolutionized treatment, its safety and efficacy has yet to be comprehensively assessed against SAVR for certain subsets of aortic stenosis patients; therefore, this study aims to systematically analyze all the available clinical evidence from randomized clinical trials on TAVR versus SAVR among intermediate and low-risk patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis.
Methodology: We performed a systematic review of the randomized controlled trials (RCT), studies comparing TAVR and …

Variation In Paternity Leave Policy In Slovenia And Hungary, Kendra Nguyen
Variation In Paternity Leave Policy In Slovenia And Hungary, Kendra Nguyen
Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union
This paper investigates the variation in paternity leave policy in Slovenia and Hungary in order to gain insight into the drivers and obstacles to policies that support gender equality and women’s rights. Contributing to gender equality and women’s rights, paternity leave policies have been found to support both child care and maternal employment. In European countries such as Spain and Germany, such policies have decreased the gender wage gap within households and shifted opinions on gender roles regarding who is responsible for care work. Given the positive impact of paternity leave, it is of interest why Slovenia has a more …
Reducing Restraint Use And Workplace Violence With The Broset Violence Checklist, Alexandria Anderson
Reducing Restraint Use And Workplace Violence With The Broset Violence Checklist, Alexandria Anderson
Dissertations
Problem: Psychiatric mental health nurses have an increased rate of workplace violence due to the acuity of patients they care for. When aggressive behavior cannot be resolved verbally, physical methods such as restraints may be utilized. Restraint use can result in unwanted consequences for both the patient and the nurse. Predicting risk of violence can be useful at reducing violence and restraint use through early risk identification.
Methods: The Broset Violence Checklist (BVC) was implemented as a way to predict aggression risk in an in-patient psychiatric unit within a mid-western hospital. This study utilized a pre- and post-intervention approach to …

Common single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 alpha kinase 3 (EIF2AK3) slightly increase the risk of disorders in the periphery and the central nervous system. EIF2AK3 encodes protein kinase RNA-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (PERK), a key regulator of ER stress. Three exonic EIF2AK3 SNVs form the PERK-B haplotype, which is present in 28% of the global population. Importantly, the precise impact of these SNVs on PERK activity remains elusive. In this study, we demonstrate that PERK-B SNVs do not alter PERK expression or basal activity in vitro and in the novel triple knock-in mice expressing the exonic …

Adverse Childhood Experiences And Intimate Partner Violence: Exploring Implications For Young Adults’ Romantic Outlook, Tyler B. Jamison, Hans Saint-Eloi Cadely
Human Development and Family Science Faculty Publications
In the present study, we used data from a community sample of 442 American young adults ages 18 to 35 to explore the associations between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), intimate partner violence (IPV), and young adults’ romantic outlook (i.e., general attitude toward romantic involvement), which includes perceived average relationship quality, desire for relationships, and dismissal of relationships. Guided by a life course perspective, we examined whether ACEs and IPV work together to predict romantic outlook among young adults. We also explored whether education level moderated the effects of ACEs and IPV on romantic outlook during young adulthood. Our findings suggest …
Assessing Paths To Greenlandic Independence: Reconciling Inuit Cultural Autonomy With Danish Rule, Leo Freedman
Assessing Paths To Greenlandic Independence: Reconciling Inuit Cultural Autonomy With Danish Rule, Leo Freedman
Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union
This analytical paper seeks to understand what political, economic, and sociocultural barriers inhibit Greenlandic independence from Denmark. The concept of independence must be conceptualized from an Inuit perspective in order to analyze what sacrifices Greenland’s largest ethnic group is willing to make to achieve an independent state. The resource extraction industry offers one path towards independence by reducing dependency on Danish and EU funding. However, this paper argues that Inuit cultural values, especially an inherent connection with the physical and spiritual health of the natural environment, is of higher value than the economic benefits of investing in the resource extraction …

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers
Although many investigators have examined post–COVID-19 condition (long COVID) and its effects in the general population, to our knowledge, no studies have investigated its effect on one of the largest underserved US populations: undocumented Latino immigrants.1 This group comprises 7% of the US population and has high rates of uninsurance, limited access to primary care, and language barriers when seeking health care.2-4 Anti-immigrant political rhetoric and immigrants’ fear of discovery of their undocumented status when accessing health care make evaluation of this population more challenging.5 We leveraged emergency departments (EDs) as the primary health care …

Mates: A Deep Learning-Based Model For Locus-Specific Quantification Of Transposable Elements In Single Cell, Kailu Song, Erxi Wu, Xiaopeng Zhu, Tao P Wu, Jun Ding
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Transposable elements (TEs) are crucial for genetic diversity and gene regulation. Current single-cell quantification methods often align multi-mapping reads to either 'best-mapped' or 'random-mapped' locations and categorize them at the subfamily levels, overlooking the biological necessity for accurate, locus-specific TE quantification. Moreover, these existing methods are primarily designed for and focused on transcriptomics data, which restricts their adaptability to single-cell data of other modalities. To address these challenges, here we introduce MATES, a deep-learning approach that accurately allocates multi-mapping reads to specific loci of TEs, utilizing context from adjacent read alignments flanking the TE locus. When applied to diverse single-cell …

Diamond Blackfan anemia (DBA) is caused by germline heterozygous loss-of-function pathogenic variants (PVs) in ribosomal protein (RP) genes, most commonly RPS19 and RPL5. In addition to red cell aplasia, individuals with DBA are at increased risk of various cancers. Importantly, the mechanism(s) underlying cancer predisposition are poorly understood. We found that DBA patient-derived lymphoblastoid cells had persistent γ-H2AX foci following ionizing radiation (IR) treatment, suggesting DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair defects. RPS19- and RPL5-knocked down (KD) CD34+ cells had delayed repair of IR-induced DSBs, further implicating these RPs in DSB repair. Assessing the impact of RPS19- and RPL5-KD on …

Background: Antibiotic resistant infections cause over 700,000 deaths worldwide annually. As antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) helps minimise the emergence of antibiotic resistance resulting from inappropriate use of antibiotics in healthcare, we developed ePAMS+ (ePrescribing-based Anti-Microbial Stewardship), an ePrescribing and Medicines Administration (EPMA) system decision-support tool complemented by educational, behavioural and organisational elements.
Methods: We conducted a non-randomised before-and-after feasibility trial, implementing ePAMS+ in two English hospitals using the Cerner Millennium EPMA system. Wards of several specialties were included. Patient participants were blinded to whether ePAMS+ was in use; prescribers were not. A mixed-methods evaluation aimed to establish: acceptability and usability of …

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests that low socioeconomic status (SES) home environments may play a role by promoting excess energy intake through a lack of access to non-food reinforcers. Because of the deleterious effects of SES-related disparities on child health and development, feasible and culturally acceptable interventions are urgently needed. Community-based music enrichment programs may be an ideal intervention strategy.
METHODS: In collaboration with a local non-profit organization and music studio, we conducted a pilot randomized controlled trial to assess the effects of a music enrichment program versus a play date control in a group of 9-24-month-old healthy infants (N = …

Empowering Change Through Raizal Perspectives On Prison Education In San Andrés Island, Sigifredo Castell Britton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Raizal ex-offenders on San Andrés Island, Colombia, encounter significant challenges when reintegrating into their community, often compounded by ineffective prison education programs and the unique sociocultural dynamics of the Raizal community. While previous researchers have identified barriers to successful reintegration, a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of Raizal ex-offenders and the perspectives of community leaders is needed. This phenomenological study, guided by culturally responsive pedagogy and social disorganization theory, was conducted to explore these experiences and perspectives. Through semistructured interviews with 10 Raizal ex-offenders and 10 community leaders, data were collected to examine the effectiveness of current prison education …
