Peninsula Medical School

Background: As a matter of policy, voluntary, community and social enterprises contribute substantially to the English health and care system. Few studies explain how the National Health Service and local authorities commission them, what outputs result, what contexts influence these outcomes and what differentiates this kind of commissioning. Objectives: To explain how voluntary, community and social enterprises are commissioned, the consequences, what barriers both parties face and what absorptive capacities they need. Design: Observational mixed-methods realist analysis: exploratory scoping, cross-sectional analysis of National Health Service Clinical Commissioning Group spending on voluntary, community and social enterprises, systematic comparison of case studies, …

Cobalt Molybdenum Telluride As An Efficient Trifunctional Electrocatalyst For Seawater Splitting, Rajarshi Kar, Amideddin Nouralishahi, Harish Singh, Manashi Nath Oct 2024

Cobalt Molybdenum Telluride As An Efficient Trifunctional Electrocatalyst For Seawater Splitting, Rajarshi Kar, Amideddin Nouralishahi, Harish Singh, Manashi Nath

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

A mixed-metal ternary chalcogenide, cobalt molybdenum telluride (CMT), has been identified as an efficient tri-functional electrocatalyst for seawater splitting, leading to enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The CMT was synthesized by a single step hydrothermal technique. Detailed electrochemical studies of the CMT-modified electrodes showed that CMT has a promising performance for OER in the simulated seawater solutions, exhibiting a small overpotential of 385 mV at 20 mA cm−2, and superior catalyst durability for prolonged period of continuous oxygen evolution. Interestingly, while gas chromatography analysis confirmed the evolution of oxygen …

Development Of Malate Biosensor-Containing Hydrogels And Living Cell-Based Sensors, Nathan J. Ricks, Monica Brachi, Kevin Mcfadden, Rohit G. Jadhav, Shelley D. Minteer, Ming C. Hammond Oct 2024

Development Of Malate Biosensor-Containing Hydrogels And Living Cell-Based Sensors, Nathan J. Ricks, Monica Brachi, Kevin Mcfadden, Rohit G. Jadhav, Shelley D. Minteer, Ming C. Hammond

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Malate is a key intermediate in the citric acid cycle, an enzymatic cascade that is central to cellular energy metabolism and that has been applied to make biofuel cells. To enable real-time sensing of malate levels, we have engineered a genetically encoded, protein-based fluorescent biosensor called Malon specifically responsive to malate by performing structure-based mutagenesis of the Cache-binding domain of the Citron GFP-based biosensor. Malon demonstrates high specificity and fluorescence activation in response to malate and has been applied to monitor enzymatic reactions in vitro. Furthermore, we successfully incorporated Malon into redox polymer hydrogels and bacterial cells, enabling analysis of …

Caregiver Perceptions On Telehealth-Based Audiological Services Offered Within A Mobile-Health Clinic For Infants, Divhanani Sithi, Samantha Marlanie Govender Dr Sep 2024

Caregiver Perceptions On Telehealth-Based Audiological Services Offered Within A Mobile-Health Clinic For Infants, Divhanani Sithi, Samantha Marlanie Govender Dr

Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

Purpose: Telehealth audiological services offered within a mobile clinic can expand the range of hearing healthcare services to rural and remote areas where many patients, in particular infants with hearing loss, go undetected due to limited access to specialist care. This study describes caregiver perceptions on the use of synchronous telehealth-based Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) services offered for their infants.

Method: A self-administered questionnaire comprising a total of 15 questions was issued to forty (n = 40) caregivers to rate their perceptions of the service.

Results: Caregivers were satisfied (76.8%) with mobile telehealth-based services on aspects of access, satisfaction …

Diagnostic Overshadowing: A Delayed Diagnosis Of Autism Spectrum Disorder In A Deaf Child, Quynh-Chi Dang, Michael Hoffman, Rachel St. John Sep 2024

Diagnostic Overshadowing: A Delayed Diagnosis Of Autism Spectrum Disorder In A Deaf Child, Quynh-Chi Dang, Michael Hoffman, Rachel St. John

Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

Diagnostic overshadowing occurs when a patient with a pre-existing diagnosis presents with symptoms that are attributed to the diagnosis, but actually reflect a separate issue. This diagnostic overshadowing can lead to delays in diagnosis, as well as disparities in health care and outcomes. The following case will provide an example in which diagnostic overshadowing contributed to the delay of an autism diagnosis in a child who is deaf. With at least 40 to 50% of children who are deaf or hard of hearing having at least one co-existing medical/developmental condition, and the current prevalence of autism at 1 in 36 …

Understanding Barriers To Timely Enrollment Of Early Intervention Services For Children Who Are Deaf And Hard Of Hearing, Krystal L. Werfel, Eddie Okosi, Brittany Grey, Cora Swindale, Emily Lund

Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

Although the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing guidelines recommend that children who are deaf and hard of hearing should begin early intervention by six months of age, prior work has revealed a substantial percentage of children who receive a diagnosis of hearing loss by three months of age but do not enroll in early intervention by six months of age (Grey et al., 2022). To further understand barriers to enrollment in early intervention for these families, we completed qualitative semi-structured interviews with 10 caregivers of children who were diagnosed with hearing loss by three months of age but did not …

Exploring Depictions Of Mental Health In Popular Hindi-Urdu Cinema, Sara Ahmed

Journal of Critical Global Issues

Hindi-Urdu popular cinema, commonly referred to as Bollywood, largely reflects the evolution of various social attitudes in the Indian subcontinent. In order to better understand these films’ depiction of social attitudes surrounding mental illness and the implications for its treatment, this study creates and analyzes an anthology of Hindi-Urdu movies from the 1940’s to the present that portray some aspect of mental illness. These movies that depict mental illness were grouped into the various aspects of stigma that they portrayed: structural stigma, courtesy stigma, health practitioner stigma, self-stigma, and public stigma. I extracted and analyzed the attitudes towards mental illness, …
