Impacts Of Phosphate And Residual Free Chlorine On The Precipitation, Stability And Dissolution Of Lead Corrosion Products, Yao Ma Oct 2024

Impacts Of Phosphate And Residual Free Chlorine On The Precipitation, Stability And Dissolution Of Lead Corrosion Products, Yao Ma

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Lead release from lead pipes into drinking water is a critical threat to public health. Orthophosphate addition is an established method of controlling lead concentrations in tap water. Many phosphate-based inhibitors currently used by utilities are blends of orthophosphate and polyphosphate. Orthophosphate can limit lead release from pipes by forming low-solubility lead phosphate solids on pipe inner surfaces. In contrast, polyphosphate can accelerate lead release by forming soluble lead-phosphate complexes. Due to the potential conversion from polyphosphate to orthophosphate in the distribution system and to complex dynamics of water chemistry in lead service lines (LSLs), the net impact of a …

New Methods To Induce Selectivity In Electrochemical Reactions By Modifying The Electrode Surface, Enqi Feng Oct 2024

New Methods To Induce Selectivity In Electrochemical Reactions By Modifying The Electrode Surface, Enqi Feng

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Organic electrochemistry has proven to be an efficient and green method for synthesis. Although the reactions studied to date have been very successful, there is still much to explore including opportunities to introduce new modes for controlling the selectivity of the reactions. Normally, the selectivity of an electrolysis reaction is based on the redox potential of the substrates. The working potential of an electrode either automatically adjusts to the potential required or is manually set at that potential. This allows for the systematic oxidation or reduction of a series of substrates that have a broad range of oxidation or reduction …

Executive Summary: Clinical Practice Guideline Obstetrics Diabetes Management, Carole N. Louis

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Summary A clinical practice guideline (CPG) was developed because the perinatal department lacked standardized management of pregestational and gestational diabetes. The practice issue is relevant since managing maternal glucose ranges during pregnancy mitigates adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. The practice-focused question asks, “What are the best practices to manage diabetes in the intrapartum and postpartum settings?” The project was designed to develop an evidence-based protocol to provide standardized management for nurses and providers. Most studies in the literature search were quantitative sources with either A or B overall quality ratings. Based on the evidence, the intrapartum target maternal glucose range …

Background and Objective: Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is an excellent therapeutic modality for sustained weight loss management and obesity-related medical conditions resolution. In the current bariatric era, there exists multiple procedures and approaches. Despite sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) being the most commonly performed procedures, the duodenal switch (DS) is a more recent procedure that has shown promising outcomes. DS procedures include the classic biliopancreatic diversion with DS (BPD-DS) and the single anastomosis duodeno-ileostomy with sleeve (SADI-S). DS surgical techniques have been amended multiple times over the last decade in order to obtain optimal patient outcomes. …

Missing Voices: Girls In The Care Economy—Slide Deck, Annabel Erulkar, Maimouna Bah, Edith Murogo, Winnie Nelima, Amar Nijhawan, Chiku Semfuko

Adolescents and Young People

As part of the International Day of the Girl Child 2024’s theme “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” it was essential to consider how adolescent girls envision their role in the future care economy. The care economy, which includes both paid and unpaid care work, disproportionately burdens women and girls, yet current policies largely overlook the distinct experiences of adolescent girls.

On October 30, 2024, the Population Council’s GIRL Center hosted a conversation among people with lived experience, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers on the implications for girls’ engagement in the care economy and how best to integrate their distinct needs in …

Heal, Not Harm: Embracing A Trauma-Informed Approach As An Act Of Transformative Care, Carrie R. Giboney Wall

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Desperate to decrease problematic student behaviors and increase desirable ones, many teachers employ traditional behaviorist models of discipline through the use of rewards or punishments. Although well-meaning and perhaps temporarily effective, these transactional barter systems can do more harm than good, especially for students who are trauma-impacted. By disrupting these practices that can re-traumatize students and embracing trauma-informed practices, teachers can extend transformative care to students and promote healing. The purpose of this qualitative investigation was to explore the manifestations of trauma on student classroom behavior and learning at a Title I public elementary school as well as multipronged elements …

In And Out Of The Silence: Connecting Waiting Worship With Transformative Care, Neil E. Cantrall, Scot Headley, Catherine Parry, Jim Wilkins-Luton

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

This essay offers an in-depth view into the transformative care experienced by four educators who found community and soul care through regular, online meetings framed around the Quaker tradition of silent, unprogrammed worship. The four colleagues were initially brought together through participation in a doctoral program, and began meeting online when the COVID-19 pandemic shifted the program’s traditional face-to-face summer residency to a virtual format. They formed solid bonds and found deep meaning through the soul care provided by the weekly meetings. As a result, the group found that the transformative care provided for each other began to naturally overflow …
