Customer Service Support. Utilizing Machine Learning To Classify, Prioritize And Summarize Issues., Hoai Nhan Nguyen Jan 2025

Customer Service Support. Utilizing Machine Learning To Classify, Prioritize And Summarize Issues., Hoai Nhan Nguyen

ICT

This capstone project investigates the application of machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) to enhance customer support operations through automated ticket classification, prioritization, and summarization. Using the multilingual Customer Support Emails dataset from Kaggle, the project follows the CRISP-DM methodology, performing extensive data cleaning, preprocessing, feature engineering, and class balancing. Five machine learning models—Decision Tree, KNN, LinearSVC, Naive Bayes, and Random Forest—were evaluated using hyperparameter tuning, cross-validation, confusion matrix analysis, and learning curves. LinearSVC demonstrated the strongest performance for both queue and priority classification, achieving accuracies of 89.8% and 81.2% respectively, with consistent generalization across folds. For summarization, extractive …

Time Series Forecasting In Financial Markets: Benchmarking The Temporal Fusion Transformer Against N-Beats., Fergus Fleury Jan 2025

Time Series Forecasting In Financial Markets: Benchmarking The Temporal Fusion Transformer Against N-Beats., Fergus Fleury

ICT

This study compares the performance of two deep learning architectures, the Temporal Fusion Transformer (TFT) and N-BEATS, for 10-day stock price forecasting. Both models were implemented using the Darts Python library, which ensured consistent preprocessing, training, and evaluation. The dataset, sourced from Yahoo Finance, included daily equity prices, technical indicators, a market sentiment index, and earnings announcements.

TFT was applied as a multivariate model incorporating past, future, and static covariates, while N-BEATS was trained as separate univariate models with past covariates only. A rolling forecast cross-validation approach was used for evaluation. Results show that TFT consistently outperformed N-BEATS, particularly under …

Data-Driven Public Transport Planning For Dublin: A Clustering And Forecasting Approach, Magdalena Burtinik Urueta, Mirae Yu

ICT

Dublin has been experiencing severe traffic congestion due to rapid economic and population growth, with residents losing an average of 158 hours per year in traffic during rush hour (Europe Data, 2025). A 2022 European Commission study found that 76% of Irish people use a car as their primary mode of transport on a typical day—an 8% increase from 2019, compared to the EU average of 47% (MacCarthaigh, 2022).

This project proposes a data-driven approach to identifying current transport accessibility gaps and forecasting future population growth across Dublin to support sustainable infrastructure development. Using Ireland’s Census data, an unsupervised method …

The Purpose Of The Preliminary Injunction, Samuel Bray Jan 2025

The Purpose Of The Preliminary Injunction, Samuel Bray

Journal Articles

This Article explores a reshaping of the preliminary injunction that is occurring in the federal courts. A preliminary injunction is designed to be a "hold in place" order, blocking actions by the parties that would undermine the efficacy of the court's remedial options. But the preliminary injunction is becoming a device for accelerating the merits decision. Instead of a four-factor test for preliminary relief, increasingly there is one factor: the merits. This Article critiques this transformation, and it argues that the preliminary injunction should be recentered on the protection of the court's remedial options.

Parental Rights, Parental Choice, And State Public Education Mandates, Nicole Stelle Garnett Jan 2025

Parental Rights, Parental Choice, And State Public Education Mandates, Nicole Stelle Garnett

Journal Articles

Pierce v. Society of Sisters and Meyer v. Nebraska were cases about parental rights in general, and parental choice in particular. Both centered on a challenge to a state's legal effort to reduce or eliminate the educational choices available to parents-in the former, by requiring students to attend public schools, in the latter, by requiring instruction in all schools, public and private, be conducted in English. Pierce and Meyer also were about state efforts to forge a homogeneous American citizenry by limiting the educational choices available to parents. As Justice McReynolds observed in Meyer, "The desire of the Legislature to …

This paper illustrates the processes and results of user acceptance and satisfaction tests for the voice-activated self-monitoring (VoiS) application conducted in the field. VoiS was designed and developed for individuals with diabetes (DM) and hypertension (HTN) to support their routine and convenient self-management using a smart speaker platform. VoiS is also accessible on users’ mobile devices to visualize user-generated data. A total of nine adults with DM and HTN participated and were asked to use the VoiS system at home for a week to identify its acceptability in real-world conditions. Participants completed phone interviews to report operational errors and a …

Metaphoric Sense Developments In The Names Of Places Of Worship In Contemporary American English, John G. Newman, Sylwester Łodej Jan 2025

Metaphoric Sense Developments In The Names Of Places Of Worship In Contemporary American English, John G. Newman, Sylwester Łodej

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

This paper offers an account of the metaphorical extension of the names of religious houses of worship such as temple, church, mosque, and synagogue in contemporary American English, reflecting processes of linguistic secularization. Using data from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA), the study investigates how the meanings of religious terms enter into secular domains, signalling shifts in societal perceptions of religious experience. The findings show that temple and church frequently undergo metaphorization, appearing in phrases like temple of learning and church of football, where non-religious modifiers drive semantic extension. These terms increasingly denote secular places characterized by human …

Billings, Ashlee Mills Duffy, Gary L. Beck Dallaghan, Emily Glenn, Eric S. Peeples, Matthew R. Sandbulte, Jason F. Shiffermiller, Carrie Valenta, Bethany Lowndes, Jana L. Wardian

Journal Articles: Hospital Medicine

BACKGROUND: For many U.S. academic physicians, direct patient care is the primary focus of daily work and the most important professional responsibility. Concurrently, some degree of scholarly activity is often required for career advancement. Junior clinical faculty often face challenges that limit their success in this area such as heavy clinical workloads or other time constraints, a lack of personal expertise or experience, mentorship, and institutional infrastructure. Support systems and faculty development interventions may mitigate these challenges and contribute to increased academic productivity and promotion. The objective of this study was to perform a scoping review of literature on strategies …

Journal Articles: Infectious Diseases

Despite available curative treatments, global rates of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection persist with significant burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Long-acting (LA) antiviral products are in development. This study explored the challenges and opportunities in LA-HCV treatment across three LMICs: Egypt, Ethiopia and India. The survey focused on understanding barriers and facilitators to treatment, with emphasis on LA treatment preferences. Four-hundred respondents completed a survey including demographics, HCV treatment history and preferences for injections, implants and microarray patches (MAPs) compared to pills. Overall, 78% of respondents were willing to receive injections, 43% were willing to receive implants and …

In From The Cold: Notes On Sixteenth-Century English Catholic History, Freddy Cristobal Dominguez Jan 2025

In From The Cold: Notes On Sixteenth-Century English Catholic History, Freddy Cristobal Dominguez

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

English Catholic history continues to tread new ground, revisit old theories, and draw together theoretical and geographical frameworks. However, it continues to struggle to be accepted as part of the "mainstream" narrative of English history. In this review essay, I explore three key areas of growth related to the study of sixteenth-century English Catholicism: returning Catholics to the "high politics" of England; a renewed emphasis on gender, particularly the role of religious women; and an international/transnational orientation that reaffirms the close ties between Britain and the Continent. Recently reviewed works include Lillian Lodine-Chaffey, A Weak Woman in a Strong Battle: …

Body Composition In Preterm Infants: Current Insights And Emerging Perspectives, Sreekanth Viswanathan, Melissa Thoene, Zaineh Alja'nini, Pradeep Alur, Kera Mcnelis Jan 2025

Body Composition In Preterm Infants: Current Insights And Emerging Perspectives, Sreekanth Viswanathan, Melissa Thoene, Zaineh Alja'nini, Pradeep Alur, Kera Mcnelis

Journal Articles: Pediatrics

In recent years, significant advancements in respiratory and nutritional care have markedly improved the survival rates of preterm infants and enhanced long-term health outcomes. Despite these improvements, emerging research highlights the lasting impacts of early growth patterns on an individual's health trajectory. Adults born prematurely face a higher incidence of health issues related to their early birth. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that preterm infants should achieve growth rates similar to those of fetuses, with clinicians emphasizing nutrition delivery to help these infants reach their expected weight for gestational age. However, this approach often results in altered body composition, …

Special-Purpose Governments, Conor Clarke, Henry Hansmann Jan 2025

Special-Purpose Governments, Conor Clarke, Henry Hansmann

Scholarship@WashULaw

When one thinks of government, what comes to mind are familiar general-purpose entities like states, counties, and cities. But more than half of the 90,000 governments in the United States are strikingly different: They are “special-purpose” governments that do one thing, such as supply water, fight fire, or pick up the trash. These entities have expanded far more rapidly than any other form of government. Yet they remain understudied, and they present at least two puzzles. First, special-purpose governments are difficult to distinguish from entities that are typically regarded as business organizations—such as consumer cooperatives—and thus underscore the nebulous border …

The Illusion Of Inclusion: The False Promise Of The New Governance Project For Content Moderation, Brenda Dvoskin Jan 2025

The Illusion Of Inclusion: The False Promise Of The New Governance Project For Content Moderation, Brenda Dvoskin

Scholarship@WashULaw

Because private companies now control the most prominent communication platforms, the most pressing question in the field of content moderation is how to ensure that the governance of public discourse responds to public values. The prevailing approach, given that the state cannot regulate speech directly, is that state regulation can be substituted with audited self-regulation, broad stakeholder participation, and negotiated rulemaking. In this model, which this article refers to as the “new governance model for content moderation,” companies include advocates as representatives of the public in their processes to govern online speech. Ideally, they negotiate policy goals and share responsibility …

The Keys To The Kingdom: The Unexpectedly Unsettled Definitions Of Security And Sale And The Overruling Of Chevron, Joel Seligman

Scholarship@WashULaw

This article explores two important unresolved questions for the Federal Securities regulation under the Securities Act of 1933 and the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. The definition of security and the definition of sale were increasingly contested and potentially unstable before the United States Supreme Court decision in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo overruled the Chevron doctrine.

The Employment Benefits Of Law Clinics And Externships, Robert R. Kuehn Jan 2025

The Employment Benefits Of Law Clinics And Externships, Robert R. Kuehn

Scholarship@WashULaw

One of the reasons law students enroll in a law clinic or externship is the belief that the experience will improve their marketability. In a nationwide survey asking what was driving demand for their courses, 94% of externship directors and 66% of law clinic directors said it was, in part, because students believe those courses improve employment opportunities. Surveys of recent law graduates and employers show that students' perceptions of the positive impact of a clinic or externship experience on their job opportunities upon graduation are well founded. Research shows that clinics and externships do aid graduates in obtaining their …

Tortious Interference Revisited, Danielle D'Onfro, Cathy Hwang Jan 2025

Tortious Interference Revisited, Danielle D'Onfro, Cathy Hwang

Scholarship@WashULaw

Tortious interference with contract has bedeviled legal commentators for over a century. It can provide relief in some situations where straightforward contract breach cannot reach. But these claims have also been derided for threatening competition, at-will employment, free speech, and important guardrails on other private law claims. The doctrine is also difficult to square with theories of efficient contract breach and the long-held view that contracts on their own are not property interests.

Perhaps because of its intellectual awkwardness, tortious interference claims were relatively rare until the twenty-first century. In the last twenty years, the doctrine has exploded in popularity, …

Safe Sex In The Age Of Big Tech Feminism, Brenda Dvoskin, Thomas E. Kadri Jan 2025

Safe Sex In The Age Of Big Tech Feminism, Brenda Dvoskin, Thomas E. Kadri

Scholarship@WashULaw

Lawmakers and technology companies are regulating online sexuality in the name of feminism. Whereas libertarian ideals dominated early debates about internet governance, “safety” became a rallying cry to regulate online activity in the age of Big Tech. As these regulatory paradigms now clash once again, one trend remains: legislators across the political spectrum and companies around the world are devising interventions that purportedly keep people—and especially women—safe from the risks of online sexuality. Through law and technology, they are targeting everything from privacy invasions to unwanted messages to sexual deepfakes. We call this regulatory and ideological trend Big Tech feminism. …

Venturing Into Health, Rachel Sachs Jan 2025

Venturing Into Health, Rachel Sachs

Scholarship@WashULaw

In recent years, the landscape of venture capital (VC) investment in healthcare technologies has been altered by the introduction of new types of VC firms: those that have emerged from hospital systems and health insurers. However, the legal literature has not yet analyzed these new VC firms, the role they may play in healthcare innovation, and how innovation law and policy ought to consider their involvement. Hospital system and health insurer VC firms operate very differently than do traditional VC firms, even those that have historically developed healthcare specializations. Instead of simply investing capital into start-up firms, hospital system and …

A New Framework For Drug Pricing Law And Policy, Rachel Sachs Jan 2025

A New Framework For Drug Pricing Law And Policy, Rachel Sachs

Scholarship@WashULaw

Scholars and policymakers have expressed concern about the impact of high prescription drug costs on patients and healthcare budgets. This Article presents a new theoretical framework for evaluating both the problem to be addressed by drug pricing reforms as well as the efficacy of potential solutions. In seeking to solve “the drug pricing problem,” our legal system has given primacy to competition rather than regulation to drive down drug prices. This Article disaggregates the broader concept of “the drug pricing problem” into four steps, each of which must be addressed and each of which elevates different institutional actors to key …
