Removal Of Antibiotics Under Visible Light By Using C,N-Tio2 Incorporated Into Magnetite Mesoporous Silica Composites, Dwita Widyawati

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Water contamination, particularly from antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin, is a significant environmental challenge necessitating the development of new remediation solutions. A promising technique for eliminating CIP from the environment is photocatalysis. The synthesis of C,N-doped TiO2 embedded within magnetite mesoporous silica (MSI) composites is prepared to serve as a promising semiconductor catalyst for photodegradation under visible illumination. Tetrabutyl titanate (TBOT), glucose, and urea are used as precursors in the sol-gel synthesis process, which controls elemental ratios to produce a unique mesoporous composite material intended to improve antibiotic photodegradation in the presence of visible light. Comparisons showed significant differences between capped …

Assessment Of Rainfall Anomaly In Thailand Under Enso By Inception Time For Classification Model, Hazlamee Benjawong

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study provides a comprehensive assessment of rainfall over Thailand during the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event using 41 years of monthly data (1982-2022) from meteorological stations, including total rainfall, average temperature, average wind speed, and average wind direction. The data were processed using Python by estimating spatially dependent monthly variables using inverse distance weighting. Total rainfall during ENSO events lasting more than two years was estimated by calculating ZSI12and analyzing the variable's significance using an inception time for classification model. The spatial total rainfall estimation results show that the distribution of total rainfall for normal, El Niño, and La …

Blocfog : Enhanced Transactional Data Encryption Via Fog Computing And Blockchain, Leon Wirz Jan 2025

Blocfog : Enhanced Transactional Data Encryption Via Fog Computing And Blockchain, Leon Wirz

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Protecting Personally Identifiable Information (PII) in financial transactions presents ongoing challenges, particularly in achieving a balance between strong security, fine-grained access control, and system efficiency. Existing approaches often rely on complex cryptographic operations that strain end-user devices or lack the flexibility needed for decentralized environments. Although blockchain provides advantages such as auditability and tamper resistance, its use is often limited by high computational costs and latency. This research proposes an efficient and scalable access control framework that integrates Ciphertext-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption (CP-ABE) with a lightweight fog computing layer. The system is designed to offload heavy cryptographic tasks from end users …

Improving Chinese Hate Speech Detection With Bert-Fasttext Fusion And Bert-Bilstm Fusion, Methini Ma Jan 2025

Improving Chinese Hate Speech Detection With Bert-Fasttext Fusion And Bert-Bilstm Fusion, Methini Ma

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Hate speech detection is an essential technique in the online environment, especially on social media platforms. This technique helps to create a safer space and reduce the risk of real-world harm. In Chinese, this task is particularly challenging because of unique linguistic structures and the frequent use of indirect expressions, sarcasm, homophones, character variants, and abbreviations. This study investigates how to improve Chinese hate speech detection by combining BERT with FastText and BERT with BiLSTM. There are six model variants that are configured: frozen BERT and fine-tuned BERT, each further extended with either FastText sentence embeddings or a clause-level BiLSTM. …

Gel Based Sensing Platforms For Ammonia Detection, Patita Salee Jan 2025

Gel Based Sensing Platforms For Ammonia Detection, Patita Salee

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This research focuses on the development of two biopolymer-based colorimetric platforms for ammonia detection in environmental water and gaseous samples. To detect ammonia in water samples, an agarose hydrogel membrane containing salicylate, hypochlorite, and sodium nitroprusside was incorporated into a flow analysis system to perform the Berthelot reaction within the gel. Ammonium in the sample was converted to monochloramine in an alkaline reagent stream, and its subsequent interaction with the sensing membrane yielded an indosalicylate blue chromophore, causing the gel to change from pale yellow to green–blue as the ammonia concentration increased. Under the optimal operating conditions, the method provided …

Evaluation Of Soil Erosion In The Middle Yom River Basin, Passapong Paentong

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study aims to assess soil erosion in the Middle Yom River Basin and analyze the spatial relationships between erosion and its influencing factors using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) in combination with Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression analysis. The analysis considers five principal RUSLE factors: rainfall erosivity (R), soil erodibility (K), topography (LS), cover management (C), and support practices (P), under both normal and heavy rainfall scenarios for the years 2010, 2015, and 2020. The results indicate that under normal rainfall conditions, most areas experienced low to moderate soil loss (0–5 tons/rai/year). Under heavy rainfall conditions, the …

Interaction Between Extreme Temperature Events And Air Pollution On Mortality In Thailand : A Nationwide Time Series Study, Phichet Khunthong Jan 2025

Interaction Between Extreme Temperature Events And Air Pollution On Mortality In Thailand : A Nationwide Time Series Study, Phichet Khunthong

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Climate change has increased the frequency and intensity of extreme temperature events (ETEs; heat and cold waves), concomitantly affecting PM2.5 fluctuation. However, limited research has investigated the interaction of ETEs and PM2.5 on mortality, particularly in tropical regions where the interaction could influence differently from cold countries. A two-stage time-series using distributed lag non-linear models was employed to estimate region-specific relative risks and 95% confidence intervals (RRs and 95% CIs) of ETEs and PM2.5 on daily cardiovascular and respiratory mortality. The relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) was examined to quantify additive effects. Cold waves had the greatest effect …

Understanding Math Proficiency Gaps, Mia Cha Bustamante Jan 2025

Understanding Math Proficiency Gaps, Mia Cha Bustamante

Education Masters Theses

As a sixth-grade teacher at a suburban elementary school in the Pacific Northwest, I observed that many students entered my classroom with significant gaps in foundational math skills. In Fall 2025, my classroom-based assessments revealed that a majority of my students were performing below grade level, particularly in numbers and operations in base ten- place value in decimals, multi-digit calculations and operations, and algebraic thinking- translating words to expressions, finding patterns, and solving multi-step problems. The purpose of this research is to investigate the question: How do student-reported experiences with foundational skill gaps, COVID-19 disruptions, and emotional factors help explain …

The Effects Of Reciprocal Teaching On Improving Reading Comprehension In Secondary Students With Learning Disabilities, Christopher Gilmartin Jan 2025

The Effects Of Reciprocal Teaching On Improving Reading Comprehension In Secondary Students With Learning Disabilities, Christopher Gilmartin

Education Masters Theses

I was introduced to a reading strategy called reciprocal teaching. Placing an emphasis on group work, reciprocal teaching allows students to investigate the text and deepen understanding of it. Since I am an actor and I thoroughly analyze text daily, I wanted to thread the concepts together and to impart my knowledge. This made me wonder what would happen if reciprocal teaching was implemented in a secondary special education classroom in the hopes of improving reading comprehension. The research question I sought to answer became: Does the strategy of reciprocal teaching help improve the reading comprehension skills of high school …

A Woman’S World Through The Lens Of Socialized Politics: How Accurate Knowledge Politically And Socially Empowers A Woman’S Autonomy, Claire G. Herzog Jan 2025

A Woman’S World Through The Lens Of Socialized Politics: How Accurate Knowledge Politically And Socially Empowers A Woman’S Autonomy, Claire G. Herzog

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Women have dealt with being perceived as inferior to men, defective, and in need of control. My research draws a connection between the ways societal beliefs, judicial action and political action interact with each other to reinforce and reproduce these limiting beliefs about women. The interaction between these institutions result in underlying policies that target women's rights, silencing their voices and sense of independence, all while aiming to control the female body completely. Despite the perception that modern society has moved away from the sexist beliefs that had been created and ingrained into society centuries ago, we are left with …

Family-Level Impacts Of Equine-Assisted Occupational Therapy For Children With Disabilities: An Exploratory Mixed-Methods Pilot Study, Emily Canigiula

Doctoral Projects

Equine-assisted occupational therapy (EAOT) has been shown to enhance functional, social, and quality-of-life outcomes for children with disabilities (McDaniel Peters & Wood, 2017; Prieto et al., 2022). While child-focused outcomes are well documented, significantly less is known about how EAOT participation may influence caregivers and the broader family unit, as existing research largely prioritizes individual outcomes over family experiences (Peters et al., 2017; Tan & Simmonds, 2018; Trzmiel et al., 2019; Xiao et al., 2023). Emerging qualitative studies suggest potential family-level impacts including family engagement, reduced parental stress, and enhanced feelings of pride, empowerment, and connection (Kalmback et al., 2020; …

Controlling The Mischief Of New York’S Foreclosure Abuse Prevention Act Through Constitutional Pre-Emption, Shelby D. Green Jan 2025

Controlling The Mischief Of New York’S Foreclosure Abuse Prevention Act Through Constitutional Pre-Emption, Shelby D. Green

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

FAPA aimed to ease the burdens of long-delayed foreclosure proceedings by restating the operation of the statute of limitations. It contains provisions across several sections of state statutes that specify that once the six year statute of limitations on actions to foreclose commences, typically by the acceleration of the balance due on the promissory note and commencement of suit, it continues to run, even after the parties have entered into a workout agreement and have dismissed the complaint. By express terms, the Act had immediate effect, such that those lenders who withdrew complaints pursuant to a workout agreement before the …

The Rescue Of Wahutedew’Á And The Epistemological Reforestation: An Analysis Of Time In A Terra Dos Mil Povos, By Kaká Werá Jecupé, Ivo Cruz

The Coastal Review

It is estimated that in 1500, the year the Portuguese arrived in America, there was a population of 2,431,000 inhabitants, according to historian John Hemming (1978), who occupied the lands that we now know as Brazil. These peoples had their own culture whose cosmology was destroyed and erased over time by a violent process of colonization. Even though entire groups were decimated, much of their influence is still alive in Brazilian culture. This influence can be found in vocabulary, cuisine, and even religious practices. With the aim of rescuing ancestral narratives and knowledge of various native peoples, Kaká Werá Jecupé …

Light And Darkness For Aesthetic Pleasure: An Exploration Of J.M.G. Le Clézio’S Early Writings And Jun’Ichiro Tanizaki’S In Praise Of Shadows, Kenichiro Otani Jan 2025

Light And Darkness For Aesthetic Pleasure: An Exploration Of J.M.G. Le Clézio’S Early Writings And Jun’Ichiro Tanizaki’S In Praise Of Shadows, Kenichiro Otani

The Coastal Review

Building upon comparative principles, this semantic reading of Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s essay In Praise of Shadows and J.M.G. Le Clézio’s early writings illustrates how both the Franco-Mauritian author and the Japanese writer problematize modern Western perception laden with concepts stifling flexible imagination through the mysterious worldview of light/darkness. They also simultaneously express the hope that another way of life leading to liberation is possible. Delving into the spiritual confinement of the subject, they demonstrate how keeping rich creativity within one’s heart can be an escape from a stagnant society. Albeit in very different mediums, Tanizaki and Le Clézio assert that the …

The Role Of Antitrust In Innovation: Standard Essential Patents, Alexandra Perez Jan 2025

The Role Of Antitrust In Innovation: Standard Essential Patents, Alexandra Perez

Marquette Intellectual Property & Innovation Law Review

A Standard Essential Patent (SEP) is a patent that is chosen to streamline a chosen industry standard to promote economic growth and consumer satisfaction. Consumers interact with SEPs in almost everything they do in their daily life, from connecting to WIFI to charging any device. This is possible because the patent selection process requires patent owners to license their patents on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms (FRAND) upon selection.  Yet, without proper regulation, this is easier said than done. Often SEP implementers are left with two options, entering exploitative agreements or rely on litigation to address unchecked anticompetitive behavior. This …

Getting It “Right”: Educators’ Experiences With School Diversity In A Gentrifying Neighborhood, Jennifer B. Ayscue, Kfir Mordechay, Gage F. Matthews, Julie Whetzel

All Faculty Open Access Publications

Schools in gentrifying neighborhoods often experience demographic changes in enrollment. The purpose of this qualitative holistic case study is to describe how leaders and teachers in a diversifying elementary school in a gentrifying neighborhood perceive and experience diversity. Drawing on Turner’s value of diversity framework, we use inductive coding to analyze interviews and also use documents to inform our findings. Although Greenleaf was striving to be intentionally diverse, consensus did not exist about the meaning of “diversity” or the desired form of diversity. Challenges associated with decentering Whiteness and resisting upholding the racial contract existed as educators worked to establish …

Dystopian Politics In The Hunger Games Series, Tristan Hogan Jan 2025

Dystopian Politics In The Hunger Games Series, Tristan Hogan

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games series takes readers to a fictional country known as Panem that hosts an annual nationwide celebration in which adolescents compete in a battle to the death. In this analysis, I approach this book series with a Marxist lens to argue that the capitalistic system in Panem satirizes American culture in the early 21st century. Every novel in the series, through this theory, can be read as what scholars identify as a “critical dystopia,” a defamiliarized version of our culture, upheld through institutions and social participation in a way that satirizes ours. I argue that the …

Indopacom Force Structure: A Trajectory Into The 2030s, Robert Burke Jan 2025

Indopacom Force Structure: A Trajectory Into The 2030s, Robert Burke

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Over the past ten years Taiwan has become a major point of friction between the United States and People’s Republic of China with both militaries preparing for a potential conflict over the island. China vastly expanded its military forces and capabilities over the past thirty years and is intent on obtaining the ability to both seize Taiwan by force and prevent the United States from generating enough combat power to intervene and defend the island. The Pentagon began to restructure its conventional forces in the Western Pacific at the end of the 2010s, implementing new operational concepts designed to fight …

A Study Of Collegiate Equine Team Funding, Expenditures, And Recruitment Strategies, Sydni Marie Nilles

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Collegiate equine teams (including horse judging, equestrian, ranch horse teams) have been recognized for their contributions to students' personal and professional development for post- graduation success. Teams have been used to provide opportunities, a sense of belonging and allow for experiences students may not have elsewhere. However, there is a notable gap in knowledge as to where funding comes from and how much teams may be able to budget for expenditures. Recruitment tactical knowledge provides other teams with knowledge of potential areas they may be lacking or unaware of. I used an online survey to understand current ranges of support …

Threshold: Stories & Graphic Memoir, Emily Kay Lewandowski Jan 2025

Threshold: Stories & Graphic Memoir, Emily Kay Lewandowski

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Threshold: Stories & Graphic Memoir, a collection of fiction and graphic memoir, explores the in-between stages of loss and grief. Both the fiction and graphic memoir pieces utilize the technique of the “narrative echo,” coined by John Gardner, to stylistically explore and interrogate these stages of in-betweenness. The final piece in this collection, “I Hope You Find Me On Mars,” is a queer expansion of Octavia Butler’s trilogy Lilith’s Brood. Each piece uses unique voice and styling to contribute to the larger literary community by interrogating manifestations of identity, queerness, and grief.
