From Classrooms To Community: An Ethnographic Narrative, Nathan Nagaoka Jan 2025

From Classrooms To Community: An Ethnographic Narrative, Nathan Nagaoka

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This ethnographic narrative weaves together the story of my journey as a novice teacher, as I worked to create a positive classroom ecology and learned countless lessons while assuming the roles of student, teacher, and observer. Through the analysis of multiple artifacts, intended to reflect my teaching practices, this narrative challenged me to examine my role in society and consider my past intentionally. With humility, hard work, and the connections I made with my students, this narrative tracks my progress as a teacher and displays my hopes and dreams for the future.

Adhd As A Lived Experience Amongst Bipoc College Students, Nikash Kale

Honors Theses

This thesis focuses on the perspectives of Black Indigenous and Persons of Color (BIPOC) college students on Attention-deficit/hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The study analyzes scoping strategies, perceived symptomatological differences, and the effects of racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds among BIPOC college students. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with 14 participants, I examine the full permeation of ADHD among BIPOC college students, its evolution from pre-diagnosis to the present, and how they navigate the disorder and its treatment. A qualitative analysis of ADHD among minorities in college will not only allow clinicians to understand the distinct struggles of BIPOC with ADHD, but it …

Once Upon Another Time: Retelling Fairy Tales & Legends With Inclusive Identities For Modern Young Adult Audiences, Hailey Drapcho Jan 2025

Once Upon Another Time: Retelling Fairy Tales & Legends With Inclusive Identities For Modern Young Adult Audiences, Hailey Drapcho

Honors Theses

This thesis explores how modern young adult (YA) fairy tale retellings can act as interventionist works as part of the mythopoeic YA fantasy sub-genre, where they enfold traditionally excluded identities into the archetypal role of the fairy tale female protagonist who is expected to embody an idealized form of girlhood. Fairy tales have a profound impact on self-image and how individuals create expectations of their role in the world. By fracturing the archetypes maintaining restrictive and exclusionary expectations, mythopoeic YA fairy tale retellings affirm the young adult girl to embrace her own individual identity and determine her role in the …

In The Kingdom Of The Thunder Dragon: Happiness, History, And Environment In A Changing Bhutan, Betsy Bolton Jan 2025

In The Kingdom Of The Thunder Dragon: Happiness, History, And Environment In A Changing Bhutan, Betsy Bolton

English Literature Faculty Works

Landlocked, mountainous, and surrounded by global giants India and China, Bhutan has provided remarkable leadership on both climate action and human happiness, despite its pre-2023 status as a least-developed nation. Bhutan was the first country to be internationally recognized as carbon neutral; it is also the birthplace of “Gross National Happiness” (GNH), a pointed alternative to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as a means of measuring the success of national policies in promoting citizens’ wellbeing. Yet Bhutan has also been a site of ethnic conflict, with roughly tens of thousands people displaced into refugee camps in the 1990s and eventually resettled …

Puerto Rico’S Grand Wyndham Hotel Río Mar, The Methods They Use To Protect Leatherback Sea Turtle Nests, And My Own Findings On These Nests, Christopher Thillet

Theses & ETDs

For a very long time, leatherback sea turtles have been harmed in many ways by ecological damage caused by humans, especially their nests. Despite this, it is also humans who have been trying their best to undo these wrongs by working to protect the environment around the areas they have constructed. This thesis serves as a reflection that will provide information on what leatherback sea turtles are and the many things that are harming them worldwide, as well as the information that the hotels of Puerto Rico have collected to help further the study surrounding the many effects that people …

“Windows For Witness: Dan Fishback’S Radical Access”, Alexandra Juhasz Jan 2025

“Windows For Witness: Dan Fishback’S Radical Access”, Alexandra Juhasz

Publications and Research

Dan Fishback’s Jewish crip aesthetic – art made within a framework of integrated access – is rooted in the human (or Jewish!) capacity to be generous and so much more. He expands our understandings of who is in the room, who is in the world, who is in our community, who lives at the same time as us but in a different way. This connection in his show between chronic illness and Palestine is not only about alienation it is about identification and solidarity.

Bridging Cultures And Classrooms: Enhancing Immigrant Student Success Through Differentiated Instruction And Social-Emotional Learning, Adriana Cruz Diaz

This thesis explores the challenges faced by immigrant students, particularly newcomers and English-language learners, in the American education system. Through an analysis of differentiated instruction and social-emotional learning (SEL), the paper highlights how tailored educational strategies can address gaps in academic achievement and social-emotional development. Drawing from personal experience as an educator and immigrant, the study emphasizes the critical role of culturally responsive teaching and programs that foster family engagement. Findings from observations and interventions in after-school and summer programs underscore the transformative impact of social-emotional learning competencies such as self-management and growth mindset on student engagement, behavior, and attendance. …

The Philosophies Of Swedish Mushroom Hunting, Kelly Zreloff Jan 2025

The Philosophies Of Swedish Mushroom Hunting, Kelly Zreloff

ENGS 15.11: Design and Education

This lesson invites students to explore Swedish mushroom hunting as both a cultural and environmental philosophy. Through a mix of mini lectures, storytelling, and outdoor experiential learning, students first learn about Allemansrätten (Sweden’s Right of Public Access) and how mushroom hunting evolved from post-war necessity to modern well-being practice. Students then reconstruct “a day in the forest” to reinforce the lecture’s key points about stewardship, secrecy, and serenity before participating in a quiet “hunt” activity in Pine Park.

By engaging curiosity first and empathy second, students come to understand that mushroom hunting is not only about harvesting food but about …

Rainwater Harvesting Instrumentation Design, Daysia Charles, Jacob Dresser, Margaret Frazier, Sophie Goldberg, Rubi Leon, Clare Mitchell

ENGS 89/90 Reports

Mexico City faces a severe water crisis, with millions of residents lacking reliable access to clean water. Isla Urbana, a non-profit organization that develops rainwater harvesting (RWH) systems to address this issue, has installed over 43,000 systems to provide essential water for underserved communities. However, a key challenge remains: there is no reliable way to measure the amount of water harvested by these systems. The current water meters in use are expensive, technically complex, and often require Wi-Fi for operation, making them inaccessible in many locations. To address this, the team found a cost-effective, simple, and accessible water meter and …

2025 Solar Decathlon Net Zero Design Challenge: Sharon Elementary School, Catherine Chen, Konstantin Spoerk, Emily Wangenheim, Courtney Sepucha, Colin Roche

ENGS 89/90 Reports

Our team participated in the 2025 US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon Design Challenge, an international collegiate competition where teams are tasked with designing sustainable, net-zero buildings to support innovation and communities. We partnered with Sharon Elementary School in Sharon, VT. This small K-6 school was looking to propose an upgrade and expansion to accommodate their growing class. They struggled to find a cost-friendly construction plan to address necessary maintenance, over-occupancy, security concerns, and poor energy efficiency. By collaborating with the administration, teachers, and students, along with the firm behind the previous expansion proposal (Banwell Architects), our team created a …
