Intertwining Wisdom: The Fusion Of Indigenous Knowledge And Liberal Arts And Sciences Education Discourses At The Autonomous Intercultural Indigenous University In The Colombian Cauca, Paula Milena Suárez Sandoval

GHEA21 Publications

This research shows how the Autonomous Intercultural Indigenous University (UAIIN), the most important community-based indigenous higher education institution in Colombia, has developed an educational model that harmonizes indigenous traditional knowledge with contemporary Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) discourses of higher education. Through qualitative analysis, the study compares how these two approaches are reflected in discourses around the purpose of education, pedagogical methods, and the university’s curriculum. The findings highlight an educational model that reconciles the inclusion of indigenous epistemologies with the contemporary dynamics of higher education.

Adam Smith And Sympathetic Cosmopolitanism, Maria Pia Paganelli Jan 2025

Adam Smith And Sympathetic Cosmopolitanism, Maria Pia Paganelli

Economics Faculty Research

Is cosmopolitanism something to explain or is it the lack of cosmopolitanism that needs explaining? Is cosmopolitanism natural or something we need to try to achieve? Is cosmopolitanism an end result or a starting point? The answer depends on the anthropological assumptions one makes. If human beings are assumed to be isolated individuals, then cosmopolitanism is something to explain, something to be taught, a possible end result. But if human beings are assumed to be intrinsically and naturally social, then cosmopolitanism may be a starting point and what needs to be explained is its absence.

I suggest that for Adam …

Occupational Therapy Practitioner Perspectives On Leadership In Everyday Practice: A Descriptive Qualitative Study, Mary E. Spores

Occupational Therapy Doctorate Capstone Projects

Background: Leadership is a topic of interest for rapidly evolving healthcare professions and a cornerstone of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) Centennial Vision. The history of leadership in the profession has a robust foundation and yet calls to action for leadership in the profession remain focused on traits, behaviors and transformative processes. Occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) are positioned to be leaders of change with the use of leadership influence however, practitioner views on their enactment of leadership in everyday practice are sparse in the literature.

Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to capture the perspectives of …

On Certainty And Doubt: Islam And The Speculative Turn In Film And Media Historiography, Pardis Dabashi Jan 2025

On Certainty And Doubt: Islam And The Speculative Turn In Film And Media Historiography, Pardis Dabashi

Literatures in English Faculty Research and Scholarship

Through an examination of the Muslim call to prayer opening Julie Dash’s Daughters of the Dust (1991), this article examines epistemological questions concerning certainty and doubt generated by the speculative turn in Black feminist film and media historiography. Because of the deferred structure of Qur’ānic revelation, as well as the tradition of reporting and transcribing the sayings and doings of the Prophet Muhammad, Islam has a vantage on the notion of testimony that is helpful in understanding the kinds of faith necessitated by the imaginative reconstructions integral to Black feminist film history and the modes of critical utterance animating Black …

Thyroid Carcinoma Recurrence Prediction Using Artificial Intelligence On Prognosis Parameter, Supawat Suntornlimsiri Jan 2025

Thyroid Carcinoma Recurrence Prediction Using Artificial Intelligence On Prognosis Parameter, Supawat Suntornlimsiri

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common subtype of thyroid malignancy and is increasingly diagnosed worldwide. Although typically localised, PTC exhibits a notable risk of bilateral involvement, with contralateral disease occurring in up to 44 percent of cases. While completion thyroidectomy is recommended in selected high-risk scenarios, it carries potential complications, making accurate prediction of contralateral involvement essential. This study investigates the utility of classical statistical methods and machine learning (ML) algorithms—Support Vector Machines (SVM), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and Random Forest (RF)—in predicting contralateral PTC using a retrospective dataset of 122 lobectomy patients. ML models, especially RF with …

Transformative Storytelling: Informing Our Practice By Exploring Ourselves, Heather Sellier Holman Jan 2025

Transformative Storytelling: Informing Our Practice By Exploring Ourselves, Heather Sellier Holman

Curriculum and Instruction (Ed.D.) Dissertations

This dissertation explores the need for and potential benefits of utilizing culturally relevant pedagogy and a culturally relevant curriculum in a homogenous – predominantly White – classroom environment. It further addresses how teachers might utilize a critical framework to interrogate and inform instructional practices. The study employs Apple’s Nine Tasks for the Critical Scholar (2012) as a critical lens for education practices and policies and the Transformative Autoethnography Model (2022) as a tool for both data collection and analysis. Autoethnography is used as the reporting vehicle with storytelling serving to illustrate how teacher experiences and beliefs impact instruction. The study …

Consumer Protection And The Illusory Promise Of The Unconsciounability Defense, Benjamin C. Zipursky, Zahra Takhshid Jan 2025

Consumer Protection And The Illusory Promise Of The Unconsciounability Defense, Benjamin C. Zipursky, Zahra Takhshid

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

The United States Supreme Court’s notorious decision in AT&T Mobility LLC v. Concepcion seems to display impatience with the idea of an unconscionability defense to the enforcement of a contract. At the core of Justice Antonin Scalia’s opinion, however, was not an argument against the idea of unconscionability per se, but an argument against using “unconscionability” as a cover for a broader public policy agenda. This interpretation is confirmed by the Court’s little-known decision in Marmet Health Care Ctr., Inc. v. Brown, handed down the term after Concepcion was decided. Plaintiffs were allowed to move forward in Marmet because the …

Bridging The Language Gap: Challenges, Consequences, And The Path To Better Access, Olivia Zetty

Summer Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

Objective: This project investigates the challenges and consequences of language barriers in healthcare, particularly affecting patients with limited English proficiency (LEP), and proposes practical strategies to enhance accessibility and equity in care delivery. Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted using PubMed and Google Scholar. Search terms included "LEP", "adult patients", "interpretation", and "language barriers". Studies were selected based on relevance to adult LEP populations and focused on patient outcomes, satisfaction, interpretation modalities, and provider perspectives. Exclusion criteria included pediatric studies and English-native populations. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses were synthesized to evaluate outcomes. Results: Findings consistently demonstrated that LEP …

Sir Francis Drake, Pirate Or Privateer, Sarah Green

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2025

This project explores the early life of Sir Francis Drake and the legacy he left. I will be focusing on how he operated as both a loyal servant to Queen Elizabeth I and a controversial figure in the eyes of Spain and Ireland. Using sources, I examine how his actions were framed as patriotic service, even though they often involved looting and destruction. Some key focuses that I go into are his failed voyages; one with John Hawkins and the Portuguese, and the other focus is the raid on Nombre de Dios. I also look at his role in Ireland …

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This work presents new Kneser-type oscillation criteria for second-order quasilinear functional dynamic equations defined on arbitrary unbounded above time scales. Our approach employs the Riccati transformation technique in conjunction with the integral averaging method. The results show a significant improvement over recent Kneser-type oscillation criteria. We provided several illustrative examples to highlight the importance of our findings.
