The Impact Of Having A Native Spanish-Speaking Nurse In Labor And Delivery For Latina Mothers, Lesvia Muñoz Mazariegos

Nursing | Senior Theses

Labor and Delivery is the physiological process in which a pregnant woman gives birth to a baby. With an increase of the Hispanic/Latinx population, the need for Spanish-speaking nurses also increases. Specifically in labor and delivery, language barriers play a critical role for a Latina mother’s laboring experience. However, according to the research, there is limited data on the effects of language concordance/discordance for laboring Latina mothers. To investigate, primary research articles were reviewed focusing on patient experiences with language concordance and discordance, childbirth experiences across different races, and nurses' perceptions of patient experiences related to language barriers. This proposed …

Caring For Native American Elders: Developing Cultural Knowledge And Comfort Levels Of Senior Nursing Students In Northern California, Ireland Odonnell

Nursing | Senior Theses

Providing appropriate care to patients in the healthcare setting includes being aware of their culture. Nurses play an important role in caring for patients and need to know how to be culturally sensitive toward their patients. Various research articles highlight the lack of knowledge and comfort that current nurses and nurse educators have when caring for culturally diverse patients. Research also shows that a lack of overall knowledge about how to be culturally competent, knowing how to care for patients from different backgrounds, and understanding the effect cultural beliefs have on modern-day medicine poses a challenge when trying to provide …

A "Mind"Ful Diet: Analyzing Nursing Education On The Mind Diet For Early-Onset Alzheimer's Disease, Audrey Marie Rafols

Nursing | Senior Theses

Early-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease (EOAD) is a rare form of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) that makes up around 5% of AD cases. The Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet, a hybrid diet of the Mediterranean and DASH (dietary approaches to stop hypertension) is an approach that patients with EOAD can adapt to slow down the progression of cognitive decline. Current literature focuses on what the effects of the diet are more for AD and not EOAD specifically, where there is less of an established baseline of nurse knowledge. The lack of research about what nurses understand regarding providing education of the …

Preventing Pregnancy: Dante And Medieval Culture, Anne C. Leone Jan 2025

Preventing Pregnancy: Dante And Medieval Culture, Anne C. Leone

Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship

This article provides an overview of the dominant views expressed in legal, medical and religious/theological traditions in the late Middle Ages in order to illustrate two basic points: 1) that the “historical precedent” with regard to abortive practices in the medieval Christian West was less homogenous and more diverse than the Supreme Court Justices assumed in their opinion delivered in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022); and 2) that – in stark contrast with what many anti-abortion activists today might assume about the historical precedent, – medieval thinkers did not generally believe that human life begins at conception.

Between Sangate Aika And Bhumika: Finding Hansa Wadkar, Aarti Wani

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

Hansa Wadkar was a popular film star of Marathi cinema, who had established herself as an actress with considerable histrionic skills, essaying a range of roles in films belonging to a variety of genres during a career spanning several decades, before and after Indian Independence. Despite the success, Wadkar’s unconventional personal life was troubled and difficult. In the early seventies her autobiography, Sangate Aika (1970), was published. Subsequently, Shyam Benegal, a stalwart of the Indian New Wave, made Bhumika (1977) broadly based on Wadkar’s autobiography. The film’s realist framework underscored by its critique of patriarchy, succeeded in bringing Wadkar’s journey …
