Ensnared By Custom: Mary Astell And The American Bar Association On Female Autonomy, Judy Cornett Jan 2025

Ensnared By Custom: Mary Astell And The American Bar Association On Female Autonomy, Judy Cornett

Book Chapters

Rhetoric—the arts of practical discourse that we broadly define as the use of symbols to influence belief and action—has something to say about contemporary legal theory and practice. Law and rhetoric in the West were born together nearly 2500 years ago in the Mediterranean. American law has eschewed its rhetorical roots since the late nineteenth century. Denying law’s rhetorical nature helps to construct an impartial façade, shoring up law’s legitimacy. Admitting the rhetorical nature of law would be to admit its partiality, or the point of view inevitably inscribed with every textual choice. At the same time, rhetorical theorists have …

Lusaka's Colonial Legacy: Town Planning, Public Health, And The Making Of A Segregated City, 1913–1963. A Study Of Power, Inequality, And Urban Development, Wamburakwao J. Sapao Jan 2025

Lusaka's Colonial Legacy: Town Planning, Public Health, And The Making Of A Segregated City, 1913–1963. A Study Of Power, Inequality, And Urban Development, Wamburakwao J. Sapao

Zambia Social Science Journal

This paper explores the intersection of town planning and public health policy in Lusaka, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia), during the colonial period (1913–1963), which was a time of significant urban growth and transformation. British colonial authorities adapted Ebenezer Howard's Garden City principles to design and manage Lusaka, but these measures perpetuated spatial control, segregation, and social engineering, thus exacerbating racial and socio-economic disparities. By analysing secondary and primary sources, including planning ordinances, zoning regulations, and public health policies, this study reveals how these measures shaped the city's development and reinforced inequalities. Despite colonial intentions for a white settler-city, Lusaka evolved …

Understanding Project Mentality As A Threat To The Sustainability Of Donor-Supported Interventions: Insights From A Zambian Reading Intervention, Charity Meki-Kombe Jan 2025

Understanding Project Mentality As A Threat To The Sustainability Of Donor-Supported Interventions: Insights From A Zambian Reading Intervention, Charity Meki-Kombe

Zambia Social Science Journal

This article provides valuable insights into project mentality (PM) as a threat to the sustainability of donor-supported interventions. The article examines factors triggering PM through a case study of a donor-supported reading intervention in Zambia and proposes ways to minimise the impact of PM. The study adopted a qualitative-interpretivist-case study approach, including interviews with 35 key stakeholders (eight head teachers, fifteen teachers, six representatives from donor agencies, and six Ministry of Education officials) and data collection through document analysis and classroom observations. Different attitudes and behaviour, such as stereotyping, alienation, and lack of confidence, ownership, commitment, and interest in donor-driven …

The Role Of Maternal Position During The Second Stage Of Labor On Reducing Perineal Injury: An Integrative Review, Ericka L. Dalton, Tabatha Ruth Erlandson

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Perineal lacerations remain a common occurrence amongst vaginal deliveries. While there are some recommendations for supportive techniques throughout the literature, position is typically not included in these. Perineal trauma can have a lasting effect on the individual and increase health care costs. The purpose of this review is to identify what birthing positions are most effective at preventing perineal injury.

Methods: A formalized search of the literature was conducted via PubMed, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and SCOPUS databases. Of the 344 articles identified, 22 original studies met the inclusion and exclusion criteria for this review. A literature matrix and quality …

How Assistance Dogs Impact The Academic And Social/Emotional Development Of Students With Disabilities, Elizabeth A. Bloom

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This literature review explores the impact of using assistance dogs in special education to address social-emotional development and academic success for students with various disabilities. The review evaluated dog-assisted interventions, a form of animal-assisted therapy, increasingly used in schools, libraries, hospitals, and higher education settings. The research findings reported positive outcomes when animals were used, such as increased motivation, reduced anxiety, and improved reading skills (Bassette and Taber- Doughty (2013), Goodmon et al. (2021), Herderson et al. (2020). More rigorous, long-term research across diverse student populations and disability categories is needed to address the long-term benefits of animal- assisted therapy. …

The Health Impact Of Clinical Training On Nursing Students In Cambodia, Felicia Kim Yee, Kimberly Aguilar Mondragon Jan 2025

The Health Impact Of Clinical Training On Nursing Students In Cambodia, Felicia Kim Yee, Kimberly Aguilar Mondragon

Nursing | Senior Theses

Background: Clinical training presents significant challenges for nursing students worldwide, particularly evident in developing countries like Cambodia, where these difficulties are intensified by a lack of training, resources, and health issues like stress and fatigue. Many students struggle without adequate guidance, forcing them to navigate complex clinical environments independently. These factors not only impact students’ confidence and academic performance, but also their health and well-being. Through this study, we can gain insight into nursing in a developing country that hasn’t been widely studied, contributing to global nursing research. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the health impact …

Improving Maternal Mental Health: The Role Of Specialized Support For Queer Women With Postpartum Depression, Dan-Tam Pham Jan 2025

Improving Maternal Mental Health: The Role Of Specialized Support For Queer Women With Postpartum Depression, Dan-Tam Pham

Nursing | Senior Theses

Queer women face disproportionately high rates of postpartum depression compared to heterosexual and cisgender individuals. Studies showed that queer women face heightened mental health challenges, including higher rates of depression and anxiety due to factors like discrimination, limited support systems, and negative healthcare experiences. There is a need for culturally competent, LGBTQ+-affirming interventions to improve maternal mental health outcomes; despite the health disparities faced by this population, research on specialized postpartum interventions is limited, revealing gaps in effective mental health care for queer mothers. The key search terms for the articles used in the study included: postpartum depression, queer women, …

The Morris Intercultural Education Initiative: A Decade Of Advancing Democracy Through Community-Engaged Learning In The Rural Midwest, Cristina Ortiz, Tammy Berberi, Thomas Genova, Windy Roberts

Anthropology Publications

While ethnoracial diversity is associated with metropolitan areas in the popular imagination, Latinx people have been moving increasingly into rural spaces during this century. Rural communities often have less infrastructure to adapt to changing linguistic and intercultural circumstances than do their urban counterparts. Following a community needs and assets assessment, the Morris Intercultural Education Initiative (MIEI) was founded in 2013 as a collaboration between the University of Minnesota Morris Clifford J. Benson Center for Community Partnerships, the local Latinx population, and the area school district to address disparities in literacy and academic outcomes and to promote community integration in West …

Inspiring Success: Methods And Interventions For Empowering And Motivating At-Risk Students, Rebecca Diaz Jan 2025

Inspiring Success: Methods And Interventions For Empowering And Motivating At-Risk Students, Rebecca Diaz

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This literature review focuses on proven techniques to motivate at-risk, reluctant learners to actively engage in their education. Specific interventions for motivating students are discussed, as well as the reasoning behind those interventions on psychological, community, and choice-driven levels. Studies demonstrated that the use of positive, trustworthy teacher-student relationships (TSRs) help create a sense of safety and security for students who have previously experienced trauma. Student choice is another intervention that creates motivation for reluctant learners, as they are able to invest in their education and can help determine their overarching academic goals. Lastly, encouraging students to build metacognitive strategies …

Circadian And Age-Related Variations Of Amino Acids Levels In Drosophila Brains: Correlations And Descriptive Dimensions, Sandrine Parrot, Jacob Crehan, Chloé Aman, Philippe De Deurwaerdère, Matthew S. Thimgan, Laurent Seugnet Jan 2025

Circadian And Age-Related Variations Of Amino Acids Levels In Drosophila Brains: Correlations And Descriptive Dimensions, Sandrine Parrot, Jacob Crehan, Chloé Aman, Philippe De Deurwaerdère, Matthew S. Thimgan, Laurent Seugnet

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

A comprehensive view of whole-brain amino acid levels holds the potential to provide valuable insights into the brain's state, given the mutual interconnections through metabolism, food intake, and neurotransmission. We tested this concept by evaluating free amino acid levels in single Drosophila brains across 24 h and at two different ages. A large proportion of these amino acids displayed time-of-day variations, and a subset exhibited age-dependent variations. Cross-correlation analysis of the data sets confirmed broad time-of-day and age dependent interconnections between amino acids. Factor Analysis of Mixed Data revealed further data structuration along key amino acids. For example, 50% of …

Measuring Change Readiness In Congregations Searching For A Pastor During A Pastoral Vacancy, Paul Hennings Jan 2025

Measuring Change Readiness In Congregations Searching For A Pastor During A Pastoral Vacancy, Paul Hennings

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study addressed the problem of measuring change readiness in Midwestern LCMC (Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ) congregations searching for a pastor during a pastoral vacancy. Measuring change readiness is important because it reflects an organization’s willingness and preparedness to change, which is especially crucial for aligning congregations and new pastors. This qualitative study utilized a collective case study approach examining four congregations. The call committees of each congregation completed an online survey and an interview with the researcher in order to collect data regarding congregational change readiness and personal change resistance. The research included a biblical and theological …
