Resilience, Joshua Liashenko Feb 2025

Resilience, Joshua Liashenko

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

Once a ubiquitous framework for assessing the capacity for recovery, perseverance, and success in the face of adversity, resilience has been met with growing critiques in its application. As a frequently used “pretty word” within health disparities research, resilience has come to signify how at-risk communities overcome hardship in ways this work argues overdetermine their labor, activist potential, and existence. This critique examines resilience through the lens of ethnographic research conducted among transgender and nonbinary healthcare providers who provide gender-affirming care within their communities. As a marginalized community experiencing transphobia and increasing structural barriers to life-affirming and life-saving healthcare, trans …

Health-Seeking Behaviors Of Asian American College Students With First-Generation Immigrant Parents, Andrea Michelle Ortega-Criddle Feb 2025

Health-Seeking Behaviors Of Asian American College Students With First-Generation Immigrant Parents, Andrea Michelle Ortega-Criddle

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Asian Americans continue to underutilize mental health and health care services for various reasons such as cultural values, acculturation/enculturation, and lack of familiarity with the healthcare system (Ruzek et al., 2011). There is little information about how much influence first-generation Asian immigrant parents have on influencing health-seeking behaviors and attitudes of their Asian American children. While second-generation Asian Americans demonstrate adherence to both Asian and Western values, they continue to be less likely to seek health services than any other ethnic group in the United States. In order to provide more culturally aware and culturally sensitive services for Asian Americans, …

Residence, Education, Wealth, And Hiv/Aids Prevention Knowledge Among Nigerian Adults, Chinedu Nwaobia Nwaru

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

HIV has remained the most prevalent and deadliest epidemic affecting humanity. It is pertinent to note that, despite the number of years since the first case was reported in the early 1980s in the United States, and concerted efforts by local, national, and international governmental and nongovernmental agencies at curbing it, the level of knowledge of HIV transmission and the disease prevention, especially among Nigerians, is still not encouraging. Nigeria, the most populous country in Sub-Saharan Africa ranks second globally as the country with the highest number of people living with HIV/AIDS, which is currently estimated at 3 million. In …

A Qualitative Exploration Of Urgent Care Clinic Providers’ Experiences With Patients With Mental Health Concerns, Teresa L. Hodges

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

With mental health concerns on the rise in the United States and around the world, there has been a call for non-traditional avenues for the treatment of patients with mental health needs. Existing research indicates that in the current post-pandemic era, urgent care clinic providers have begun playing a pivotal role in the treatment of patients with mental health concerns. However, there is a lack of research currently available on the lived experiences of urgent care clinic providers treating of patients with mental health concerns. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of urgent care …

Medical Laboratory Technologist Labor Market And Industry Initiatives To Address Labor Shortages, Jarvis John Surriga

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The demand for laboratory testing has increased, requiring more medical laboratory technologists/scientists (MLTs/MLSs) in the United States. However, the supply of qualified MLS workers has decreased, which has caused a critical labor shortage. The purpose of this integrative review was to determine the best practices and strategies for improving the staffing and retention of clinical laboratory staff (CLS) given the growing demand for laboratory services. A search of empirical and nonempirical literature published between 2019 and 2024 yielded 1,935 articles, and exclusions resulted in 66 articles that addressed the problem. Principal Perceptions Of Advising For The Adoption Of Social Media As An Instructional Application, Ben Hudson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Secondary school principals are seeking to meet students where they are by integrating social media into school curricula to enhance student learning. However, little has been published about principals’ perceptions of the value of social media as an instructional tool or the advising processes they employ to facilitate the adoption of social media as an instructional application. The problem this study addressed was principals’ perceptions of social media as an instructional application and how those perceptions influence decisions to advise for the adoption of social media for instructional purposes. Guided by Rogers’s diffusion of innovations theory and Davis’s technology acceptance …

Mitochondrial Dysfunction Is A Hallmark Of Woody Breast Myopathy In Broiler Chickens, Elizabeth S. Greene, Paula R. Chen, Carrie Walk, Mike Bedford, Sami Dridi

Poultry Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The woody breast (WB) myopathy poses significant economic and welfare concerns to the poultry industry, however, there is no effective strategy to mitigate this pathology due to its unknown etiology. After showing previously that hypoxia is a key factor in WB progression, we used here various techniques demonstrating dysregulated mitochondria (morphology, biogenesis, tethering, function, and bioenergetics) in WB-affected muscles and in hypoxic myoblasts compared to healthy tissues and normoxic cells, respectively. The increased levels of calcium (Ca2+) in both WB-affected tissues and hypoxic myoblasts suggested that mitochondrial Ca2+ overload is likely a leading cause for mitochondrial dysfunction that merits further …

The Unfolding Story Of Protein Misfolding Causing Alzheimer Disease In Recipients Of Human Pituitary Growth Hormone, Evan G. Graber, Sayed M. Hadi Hosseini, Darrell M. Wilson, Alan D. Rogol

Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases Faculty Papers

Human growth hormone (hGH) has been in clinical use for children with GH deficiency (GHD) since the late 1950s. The original formulations were considered very safe with few adverse events reported. That changed remarkably in 1985 when the first patients with GHD, who had been treated with cadaveric hGH, were diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). Fortunately, that same year a robust supply of recombinant hGH was released to the market whose adverse event profile did not include CJD. Patients who had received National Hormone and Pituitary Program hGH have been continuously followed since 1985. It is clear that prions are …

This paper describes a techno-economic model for exploiting the Celtic Sea wind resource through direct productionof hydrogen offshore. The model conceives a modular approach with eight 510 MW floating windfarms, each with an electrolyser system and export compressor mounted on a jacket. The model ensures an uninterruptedhydrogen supply to an industrial cluster (16.4 te.H2/h) by incorporating salt cavern hydrogen storage.During periods of no power generation, baseload power is provided from hydrogen fuel cells. The base-casemodel with a Discount Rate of 6% returned an Levelised Cost of Hydrogen (LCoH) of £7.25 per kg of hydrogen in2023. The LCoH shows strong sensitivity to …

SPOUT1/CENP-32 encodes a putative SPOUT RNA methyltransferase previously identified as a mitotic chromosome associated protein. SPOUT1/CENP-32 depletion leads to centrosome detachment from the spindle poles and chromosome misalignment. Aided by gene matching platforms, here we identify 28 individuals with neurodevelopmental delays from 21 families with bi-allelic variants in SPOUT1/CENP-32 detected by exome/genome sequencing. Zebrafish spout1/cenp-32 mutants show reduction in larval head size with concomitant apoptosis likely associated with altered cell cycle progression. In vivo complementation assays in zebrafish indicate that SPOUT1/CENP-32 missense variants identified in humans are pathogenic. Crystal structure analysis of SPOUT1/CENP-32 reveals that most disease-associated missense variants are …

Background: Transurethral surgery is often accompanied by postoperative urinary tract infection. Although early detection and adequate treatment of bacteremia are required to prevent sepsis, it is usually undetectable during surgery. We report two cases with remarkable hypertension and tachycardia during transurethral surgery in which bacteremia was diagnosed by an intraoperative blood test.

Case presentation: An 80-year-old man (Case 1) underwent transurethral holmium laser prostate enucleation under spinal anesthesia, and an 88-year-old woman (Case 2) underwent transurethral resection of bladder tumor under general anesthesia. Altered consciousness (Case 1) and postoperative delirium (Case 2) were noted, in addition to remarkable intraoperative hypertension …

Smart contract as a new form of contract is recognized to provide speedy and efficient transactions. Eliminating textual ambiguities, cumbersome contractual terms, enables negotiations, verify terms and automatically enforce tempered-free contractual terms without the need for intermediaries. In traditional contract, contractual terms are written in formal language which are quite cumbersome, the process of concluding transactions is slow and requires the intervention of lawyers, banks, registry departments and the courts. Many jurisdictions including Nigeria are still carrying out contractual transactions relying solely on traditional contract despite advancement in technologies including Blockchain technology, Ethereum and use of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and …
