Mathematics and Statistics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Purpose: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) management is increasingly focusing on patient-centered care, making patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) critical for understanding the subjective aspects of diabetes treatment and self-management. These measures differ based on cultural contexts and individual perspectives, leading different countries to the development of country-specific tools to assess care quality from the patient’s viewpoint. This review aimed to identify available instruments for assessing patient-reported experiences in individuals with diabetes and examine the different domains, items, and the validity and reliability of these instruments. Methods: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, databases including PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane, and Scopus were searched for English-language articles …

Book Review: There Goes The Neighborhood, Feliciana Lopez-Goodman

The Utah English Journal

Rhea’s motives seem simple—save her best friend from eviction and stop the neighborhood from falling apart. As is true for all complex characters, there is more to Rhea, Zeke, and Malachi as they create a fake gang in their South LA neighborhood of Kofa Park. In Jade Adia’s debut novel There Goes the Neighborhood, gentrification is front and center as three teenagers take on the responsibility of saving their neighborhood and their chosen family.

In Defense Of The Major Questions Doctrine, Louis J. Capozzi Iii

Notre Dame Law Review

The major questions doctrine, which requires agencies claiming important powers to identify clear authority from Congress, is transforming administrative law. Breaking with recent practice, the doctrine prevents the executive branch from issuing laws addressing pressing, novel issues without Congress’s affirmative consent.

In response, scholars have generally criticized the doctrine and questioned its legitimacy. Critics have alleged that the doctrine was fabricated by the Supreme Court without proper justification, is incapable of principled application, frustrates the intent of past Congresses to delegate broad power to agencies, aggrandizes judicial power, and hinders desirable executive branch lawmaking.

This Article disagrees with those criticisms …

Kendrick Lamar Brings New Literature To The Ela Classroom, Chris A. Peck

The Utah English Journal

Until April of 2017 I was only mildly aware of Kendrick Lamar. I had listened to and enjoyed songs like “Alright” and “Swimming Pools” but had little experience past these songs. After his album D.A.M.N. came out, I began to see several posts regarding the importance of this album, many responses by professors and teachers I knew well and trusted.

Co-Creating A Community Of Learners Through Interactive Read-Alouds Of Expository Texts, Kari Allsup

The Utah English Journal

I am reading aloud Zombie Makers: True Stories of Nature’s Undead (Johnson, 2013) to a group of 7th grade students. The text describes the larva stage where a young jewel wasp feasts on the cockroach’s insides. As I read, there are scattered exclamations of “ewwww,” “sick,” and audible gasps. I stop reading to dig into these reactions.

Sentence Detective: Investigating Sentence Structure To Support Reading Comprehension, Rachel Knecht Feb 2025

Sentence Detective: Investigating Sentence Structure To Support Reading Comprehension, Rachel Knecht

The Utah English Journal

Jacob was honest about his usual reading strategies. Like Jacob, readers with a history of reading difficulties may deal with challenging, long, or unfamiliar sentences by skipping or stumbling over them (Nomvete & Easterbrooks, 2020; Vaughn et al., 2022). But, Jacob offered another strategy— Sentence Detective. Over the past six weeks, Jacob had learned how to use Sentence Detective, a strategy for breaking sentences down into meaningful, more manageable parts. Although skipping or skimming may have been his go-to strategy for sentence-level comprehension, he now had another tool to try out.

Should I Stay Or Should I Go? Why Nebraska’S Rural Veteran Teachers Chose To Remain In Their Position, Nate Seggerman Feb 2025

Should I Stay Or Should I Go? Why Nebraska’S Rural Veteran Teachers Chose To Remain In Their Position, Nate Seggerman

Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

Where have all the teachers gone? This is the question that school districts nationwide have been asking in recent years as the country faces a continued shortage of highly qualified K-12 educators. To date, much of the research has focused on the reasons why teachers are leaving the profession and why prospective teachers elect for other vocations altogether. Increased public scrutiny, criticism of public education from politicians, demanding working conditions, lack of financial and/or professional support, and burnout are all common culprits. Yet there remains a core population of, admittedly aging, veteran teachers who have persevered, thus begging the question: …

Consumption Responses To Income Shocks Through Lottery Winning, Seonghoon Kim, Kanghyock Koh Feb 2025

Consumption Responses To Income Shocks Through Lottery Winning, Seonghoon Kim, Kanghyock Koh

Research Collection School Of Economics

We study the effects of lottery winning on consumption spending using newly available household survey data in Singapore. We find strong consumption responses to a transitory income shock via lottery wins. Lottery winners spend about half of their prizes within 12 months of winning. We show that consumption responses are stronger among households with more binding liquidity constraints and less risk aversion, which is consistent with the standard life-cycle model. The strong consumption response suggests that fiscal stimulus policies or other public transfer programs could be an effective means of boosting consumption spending of the economy in the short run.

Moss-Magee Rehabilitation Papers

Tulving characterized semantic memory as a vast repository of meaning that underlies language and many other cognitive processes. This perspective on lexical and conceptual knowledge galvanized a new era of research undertaken by numerous fields, each with their own idiosyncratic methods and terminology. For example, "concept" has different meanings in philosophy, linguistics, and psychology. As such, many fundamental constructs used to delineate semantic theories remain underspecified and/or opaque. Weak construct specificity is among the leading causes of the replication crisis now facing psychology and related fields. Term ambiguity hinders cross-disciplinary communication, falsifiability, and incremental theory-building. Numerous cognitive subdisciplines (e.g., vision, …

A Statistical Framework Of Watermarks For Large Language Models: Pivot, Detection Efficiency And Optimal Rules, Xiang Li, Feng Ruan, Huiyuan Wang, Qi Long, Weijie J Su

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Since ChatGPT was introduced in November 2022, embedding (nearly) unnoticeable statistical signals into text generated by large language models (LLMs), also known as watermarking, has been used as a principled approach to provable detection of LLM-generated text from its human-written counterpart. In this paper, we introduce a general and flexible framework for reasoning about the statistical efficiency of watermarks and designing powerful detection rules. Inspired by the hypothesis testing formulation of watermark detection, our framework starts by selecting a pivotal statistic of the text and a secret key-provided by the LLM to the verifier-to control the false positive rate (the …

150 Years Of Detox: How Inadequate Dietary Supplement Regulation Undermines Consumer Safety In The Weight Loss Industry, Chloe Chambers

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Prior to the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906, the American food and drug market was a proverbial “wild west,” fraught with charlatans, snake oil salesmen, and manufacturers cutting costs at the expense of consumers. The Pure Food and Drug Act, along with the Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act of 1938 took steps to address this problem, creating the modern food and drug regulatory scheme. While American food and drugs are markedly safer now than they were 150 years ago, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 has prevented dietary supplement safety from keeping …

Civil Jury Trial Discussions In Colorado: Perspectives From Judees And Attorneys After Twenty-Five Years Of Jury Reform, Juan G. Villaseñor Feb 2025

Civil Jury Trial Discussions In Colorado: Perspectives From Judees And Attorneys After Twenty-Five Years Of Jury Reform, Juan G. Villaseñor

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform Caveat

In the United States, the overwhelming practice in civil jury trials (and certainly in criminal trials) is that jurors must wait to deliberate until they have heard all the evidence, the attorneys’ closing arguments, and received the instructions on the law from the court. Generally, jurors may not discuss the evidence they are hearing or seeing as the trial progresses, and the judge, at multiple points during the trial, typically instructs jurors not to do so, especially before any recess.

Colorado, among a handful of other jurisdictions, is an exception to that practice. In civil jury trials in district court, …
