Book Review: Alebrijes, Shauna Christensen

The Utah English Journal

400 years into the post-apocalyptic future, 13 year-old orphan Leandro and his younger sister, Gabi, struggle to survive in a barren San Joaquin Valley. Like the other Spanish-speaking lower class field workers, they are forced to farm vegetables for the elite ruling class, or risk exile or death in the harsh desert, a barren wasteland filled with terrifying man-eating wyrms. Leandro’s plan to escape with Gabi is thrown into disarray when Gabi is caught stealing a single strawberry in the market. Leandro takes the blame and is sentenced to banishment, or he can choose to have his consciousness transferred to …

Experts like Louisa Moats and anyone who has recently completed LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) training, know that 95% of children can be taught to read (Louisa Moats, 2023). As a secondary educator, it’s tempting to see this statistic and ignore it. Surely, this must be someone else’s problem. In fact, if all goes according to plan in the world of elementary education, students become proficient at foundational reading skills before fourth grade, especially if one considers Kilpatrick’s work which establishes this benchmark for the development of advanced phonological awareness skills (Kilpatrick, 2015, p. …

In my first-year teaching, I put a sentence on the board from Megan McDonald’s picture book My House Has Stars: “I hear the water lapping the sides of our boat, lapping the sides, lapping the sides” (McDonald, 1996, p. 2). It’s an exciting sentence. I was sure that students would have plenty to say about how it was crafted.

The Silent Stakeholders In Censorship: Insights In Letting Young Adults Join The Censorship Conversation, Mercedes Medel Feb 2025

The Silent Stakeholders In Censorship: Insights In Letting Young Adults Join The Censorship Conversation, Mercedes Medel

The Utah English Journal

I grew up enjoying Judy Blume’s books: Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Superfudge, Blubber, and many more. There was not much conversation in my community or at home about what books or authors should be read; instead, I was given free range to explore libraries and choose what I was interested in, what I was needing, throughout my adolescence. It wasn’t until I was sitting in Chris Crowe’s Studies in Young Adult Literature class this past spring that I discovered, to my surprise, that Judy Blume was at the center of many controversies throughout her career. …

2023/2024 Robert E. Kennedy Library Annual Report, Robert E. Kennedy Library

Library Publications and Administrative Reports

This past year presented unique challenges as we continued to navigate the changes brought by the Kennedy Library Transformation Project. We successfully relocated our collections and services to temporary locations, to accommodate the massive work to renovate our 44-year-old building. While this transition brought about changes in our physical space, it underscored the unwavering dedication and adaptability of our staff and the resilience of our library community. This annual report highlights the innovative ways we continue to serve our students and faculty throughout the transformation. As you turn the pages of the report, you’ll learn about:

Fourier Series For Singular Measures In Higher Dimensions, Chad Berner, John E. Herr, Palle E.T. Jorgensen, Eric S. Weber Feb 2025

Fourier Series For Singular Measures In Higher Dimensions, Chad Berner, John E. Herr, Palle E.T. Jorgensen, Eric S. Weber

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

For multi-variable finite measure spaces, we present in this paper a new framework for non-orthogonal L2 Fourier expansions. Our results hold for probability measures μ with finite support in Rd that satisfy a certain disintegration condition that we refer to as "slice-singular". In this general framework, we present explicit L2(μ)-Fourier expansions, with Fourier exponentials having positive Fourier frequencies in each of the d coordinates. Our Fourier representations apply to every f∈L2(μ), are based on an extended Kaczmarz algorithm, and use a new recursive μ Rokhlin disintegration representation. In detail, our Fourier series expansion for f is in terms of the …

Effects Of Initial Foot Position On Neuromuscular And Biomechanical Control During The Stand-To-Sit Movement: Implications For Rehabilitation Strategies, Woohyoung Jeon, Ashley Dalby, Xuanliang Neil Dong, Chung-Hyun Goh Feb 2025

Effects Of Initial Foot Position On Neuromuscular And Biomechanical Control During The Stand-To-Sit Movement: Implications For Rehabilitation Strategies, Woohyoung Jeon, Ashley Dalby, Xuanliang Neil Dong, Chung-Hyun Goh

Health & Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Initial foot position (IFP) is one of the important movement strategies that influence neuromuscular and biomechanical control during sit-to-stand (STS) movements. Similarly, stand-to-sit (StandTS) is vital in rehabilitation settings for evaluating strength and balance control during descending movements. Understanding how IFP impacts changes in biomechanical and neuromuscular movement control factors during StandTS can provide valuable insights for designing effective rehabilitation programs.

Methods: Twelve healthy young adults participated in this study, examining three symmetric IFPs: (1) REF (reference); (2) wide: each foot was shifted outwards by 30% from REF; (3) TO (toes-out): symmetric toes-out angle of 30° from REF. Kinematic …

Getting Teens To Read: Date A Book, Joëlle Beard Feb 2025

Getting Teens To Read: Date A Book, Joëlle Beard

The Utah English Journal

“I hate reading!” “I will never read a book again after graduation; why do I have to read in your class?” “Reading is so boring; there aren’t any good books!” If you are a secondary English teacher, comments like this are nothing new. So many of our students do not enjoy reading and do not see the value of reading a book. Part of this is due to the curriculum push to read novel excerpts rather than full novels, or sometimes eliminate fictional texts altogether and read solely informational texts. The feeling of not wanting to read a book or …

Writing Prompts In The Healing-Centered Classroom, Elizabeth Hancock Feb 2025

Writing Prompts In The Healing-Centered Classroom, Elizabeth Hancock

The Utah English Journal

As I began the 2013-14 school year, I encountered students with a full range of life experiences. My students’ lives ran the gamut from having the 1950s version of traditional middle- class families to being part of the Utah foster care system. Their challenges included depression over not making the school dance team, dyslexia or other learning disabilities, and responding to trauma with self-harm by using a heated curling iron. I wondered what I could do to help struggling students make it through the minefields in their lives, and remembered the character of Ponyboy, who writes about his friends’ traumatic …

Voice And Reflection: Innovating Peer Review With Think-Aloud Group Discussions, Marissa Palmer

The Utah English Journal

“Ok guys, get out your Chromebooks and pull up your rough drafts. Today we are peer reviewing!”

As the students start getting things ready, there are a few groans from around the room and a few panicked “what if I’m not done yet?”s. The beginning of every peer review day starts the same: help kids get their essays properly formatted, demonstrate how to put their document in suggesting mode, and go over the protocols for the day.

Book Review: Monstrous: A Transracial Adoption Story, Amanda Thomas

The Utah English Journal

Sarah is a little girl with a vibrant inner life and explosive energy and creativity. From her first realization that The Little Mermaid was made by teams of artists drawing thousands of illustrations, she sees life and power in her art. Sarah relies on that power as she navigates the confusing and sometimes harsh realities of being one of few non-white kids growing up in her small Maryland town. Adopted from Korea as an infant, Sarah struggles to understand how she is different from the other kids and even from her older adopted sister, Liz (also from Korea). Every time …

From The Editors: Turning Pages, Turning Hearts, Mandy Luszeck, Jon Ostenson, Rachel Knecht

The Utah English Journal

When my students complete reflections on their readings, my favorite responses usually say something along the lines of, “I never saw it that way before, but now I do.” As English Language Arts teachers, we are well aware that literature is more than mere stagnant text, rather it is dynamic. It is transformative. Perspectives, experiences, ways of being that might otherwise be shielded from our students are illuminated in the stories they read, allowing them in turn to see and understand the world around them in a new light. According to Steven Wolk (2009), “As educators, we need to help …

Unconditionally Optimal Convergent Zero-Energy-Contribution Scheme For Two Phase Mhd Model, Jinjin Yang, Shipeng Mao, Xiaoming He Feb 2025

Unconditionally Optimal Convergent Zero-Energy-Contribution Scheme For Two Phase Mhd Model, Jinjin Yang, Shipeng Mao, Xiaoming He

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper focuses on the unconditionally optimal error estimates of a fully discrete decoupled scheme for two-phase magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model with different viscosities and electric conductivities, by using the zero-energy-contribution (ZEC) method for the temporal discretization and mixed finite elements for the spatial discretization. Based on the ZEC property of the nonlinear and coupled terms of the model, an ordinary differential equation is designed to introduce a nonlocal scalar auxiliary variable which will play a key role in the design and the energy stability of the decoupled scheme. Combining fully explicit treatment on the nonlinear and coupled terms with the …

Evolution Of Teachers’ Perspectives On Family Engagement: Building Dual Capacity For Multilingual Learners, Hazel Vega, Emily Howell, Lindsey W. Rowe, Katie M. Crook, C. C. Bates, Kavita Mittapalli, Amlan Banerjee

Publications

Family engagement in multilingual learner education offers benefits associated with improved academic performance, stronger parent-teacher communication, and more inclusivity of cultural and linguistic diversity. Responding to calls for professional development that enables teachers to meaningfully involve families, this paper draws from surveys and course assignments to examine how teachers expanded their perceptions about the incorporation of multilingual learner families in a graduate program. We conclude by discussing implications for teacher professional development with specific attention to how teachers can integrate multilingual learner families.

National Assessment Program Civics And Citizenship 2024. Public Report, Tim Friedman, Kate O'Malley, Wolfram Schulz, Judy Nixon, Dominique Hall, Frances Eveleigh

Civics and Citizenship Assessment

This report presents the findings of the 7th National Assessment Program – Civics and Citizenship, which was administered in May 2024, and which tests students’ civics and citizenship knowledge and understanding in a sample of Australian schools. The 2024 report reveals that Year 6 and 10 students have a high degree of trust in civic institutions, but considerably less trust in the media or social media. In addition, students have also expressed concerns about a range of issues affecting Australia, including pollution, climate change, crime, and racism. It also shows that, at the national level, results have fallen since the …

Mathematics and Statistics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Purpose: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) management is increasingly focusing on patient-centered care, making patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) critical for understanding the subjective aspects of diabetes treatment and self-management. These measures differ based on cultural contexts and individual perspectives, leading different countries to the development of country-specific tools to assess care quality from the patient’s viewpoint. This review aimed to identify available instruments for assessing patient-reported experiences in individuals with diabetes and examine the different domains, items, and the validity and reliability of these instruments. Methods: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, databases including PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane, and Scopus were searched for English-language articles …

Book Review: There Goes The Neighborhood, Feliciana Lopez-Goodman

The Utah English Journal

Rhea’s motives seem simple—save her best friend from eviction and stop the neighborhood from falling apart. As is true for all complex characters, there is more to Rhea, Zeke, and Malachi as they create a fake gang in their South LA neighborhood of Kofa Park. In Jade Adia’s debut novel There Goes the Neighborhood, gentrification is front and center as three teenagers take on the responsibility of saving their neighborhood and their chosen family.

In Defense Of The Major Questions Doctrine, Louis J. Capozzi Iii Feb 2025

In Defense Of The Major Questions Doctrine, Louis J. Capozzi Iii

Notre Dame Law Review

The major questions doctrine, which requires agencies claiming important powers to identify clear authority from Congress, is transforming administrative law. Breaking with recent practice, the doctrine prevents the executive branch from issuing laws addressing pressing, novel issues without Congress’s affirmative consent.

In response, scholars have generally criticized the doctrine and questioned its legitimacy. Critics have alleged that the doctrine was fabricated by the Supreme Court without proper justification, is incapable of principled application, frustrates the intent of past Congresses to delegate broad power to agencies, aggrandizes judicial power, and hinders desirable executive branch lawmaking.

This Article disagrees with those criticisms …

May Federal Courts Answer Questions When Not Deciding Cases?, Benjamin B. Johnson

Notre Dame Law Review

Conventional wisdom says that Article III’s case-or-controversy requirement prevents federal courts from answering legal questions when they are not deciding cases. This is only partially correct. This Article shows conditions under which a federal court may answer questions even when not deciding a case. To do so, it traces the appellate power back to its origins in English common law courts and through the early American judiciary. For centuries, common law judges have answered questions sent to them by lower courts when doing so would help those lower courts to decide pending cases. In England, the “case stated” procedure facilitated …
