Inflammation is a significant driver of ischemic stroke pathology in the brain. To identify potential regulators of inflammation, we performed single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) of young and aged mouse brains following stroke and found that interferon alpha-inducible protein 27 like 2 A (Ifi27l2a) was significantly up-regulated, particularly in microglia of aged brain. Ifi27l2a is induced by interferons for viral host defense and has been linked with pro-inflammatory cellular mechanisms. However, its potential role in neurodegeneration is unknown. Using a combination of cell culture, experimental stroke models in mice, and human autopsy brain samples, we demonstrated that induction of Ifi27l2a occurs …

Creating An Android-Based Calisthenics Application To Assist Students In Improving Their Physical Fitness, Restyandito, Narendra Poetra Wisnoewardhana, Danny Sebastian

Journal of Informatics and Web Engineering

College students, particularly those heavily involved in coursework, frequently do not prioritize physical fitness. Regular exercise is essential for preserving physical fitness and facilitating demanding academic tasks. Although there are other fitness programs available, such as GYM, jogging, CrossFit, and Yoga, users sometimes fail to make full use of them because the content is confined to exercise videos and descriptions. This matter highlights the progress of the Android application Kali Tech, which specifically concentrates on organizing and documenting calisthenics workouts. This program employs the concept of gamification by utilizing student achievement levels to encourage students to be diligent in doing …

Impulsivity represents an individual's tendency to act on urges without sufficient forethought. Heightened impulsivity is a hallmark of many mental health disorders. Objective impulsivity assessments could improve risk evaluation, diagnosis, and behavioral outcome monitoring in impulsivity-related health disorders. Towards objective impulsivity assessment, in this work, we identify impulsivity correlates in objective measurements, investigate their complementarity, and contrast impulsivity mechanisms across health conditions. We analyzed behavioral tests, heart rate variability (HRV), and fMRI-based brain connectivity in 227 healthy participants and 34 participants with mood disorders. Impulsivity dimensions had complementary correlates in objective measurements, with fMRI providing the strongest correlates. Multimodal assessment …

Adaptive immunity is critical in eliminating tumors, but cancer-intrinsic factors can subvert this function. Melanoma antigen-A4 (MAGE-A4), a cancer-testis antigen, is expressed in solid tumors and correlates with poor survival, but its role in tumorigenesis and antitumor immunity remains unclear. We found that expression of MAGE-A4 was highly associated with the loss of PTEN, a tumor suppressor, in human non–small cell lung cancers (NSCLC). Here, we show that constitutive expression of human MAGE-A4 with Pten loss in mouse airway epithelia results in metastatic adenocarcinoma. Tumors showed distinct enrichment in IgA+ CD138+ CXCR4+ plasma cells (PCs) and increased expression of …

Lived Experiences Of Police Use Of Force In Western Utah, Kenny Augustin

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The use of force by police officers toward African Americans has been a tense subject in the United States Although statutory law grants the police officers the right to use force, the level and the type of force used by police officers can be seen as problematic. In this study, the lived experiences of African Americans and police officers’ use of force were explored. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore whether the lived experiences of African Americans differ from police officers concerning the use of force in Utah and how fear, trust, and confidence influenced behaviors. A …

The trabecular meshwork within the outflow apparatus is critical in maintaining intraocular pressure homeostasis. In vitro studies employing primary cell cultures of the human trabecular meshwork (hTM) have conventionally served as surrogates for investigating the pathobiology of TM dysfunction. Despite its abundant use, translation of outcomes from in vitro studies to ex vivo and/or in vivo studies remains a challenge. Given the cell heterogeneity, performing single-cell RNA sequencing comparing primary hTM cell cultures to hTM tissue may provide important insights on cellular identity and translatability, as such an approach has not been reported before. In this study, we assembled a …

Research Essay

Research in progress for ENGL 1302: Composition II

Faculty Mentor: Lisa Roy-Davis, PhD

I am pleased to introduce Caroline Peacock’s excellent work “Classical Ballet: The Progressive Preservation of Tradition,” a research essay she wrote for my English 1302 class in the fall 2023 semester. Adapted from Bruce Ballenger’s textbook, The Curious Writer, the Research Essay assignment encourages students to foreground the role of inquiry by narrating their questions and how their sources address and extend those questions. When students prioritize questions over answers, their writing then demonstrates the value of “thinking on the page,” or the forward …

Counter-Intuitive Links Between Cave Genesis And Subaerial Stream Dynamics In The Têt Valley–Lachambre Network, Eastern Pyrenees, France, Stéphane Jaillet, Gabriel Hez, Marc Calvet, Magali Delmas, Edwige Pons-Branchu, Yanni Gunnell

International Journal of Speleology

The Lachambre cave network (Eastern Pyrenees, France) is well suited to studying the interaction between vertical successions of low-gradient cave passages in the limestone and chronosequences of fluvial terraces in the adjacent valley. Investigations here focus on cave passages striking parallel to the Têt River, and on their topographic, geomorphological, sedimentological and geochronological relationship with the two youngest generations of Pleistocene fluvial terrace, T2 and T1. Results reveal that the longitudinal profiles of the terraces and modern thalweg (1.5–3%) are ten times steeper than the profiles of the subterranean passages (0.1–0.3%), which display typical characteristics of water table caves. The …

Optimal Investment In An Energy Storage System, Marta Castellini, Chiara D'Alpaos, Fulvio Fontini, Michele Moretto

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Renewable energy production plays a crucial role in the energy transition. However, many renewable energy sources (RES) are intermittent, and there is often a mismatch between energy production and consumption, which can be partially solved by storage. In this paper, we investigate the investment decision in a photovoltaic (PV) power plant coupled with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), namely an Energy Storage System (ESS). We aim to investigate the relationship between the net present value (NPV) of the investment and the technical implications related to the maximum amount of energy to be stored while also accounting for the impact …

Theatre and Performance Studies Programs

What happens when people with power go unchecked, especially when that power is driven by desires and emotions? Is morality lost? What are the repercussions of tyranny? Kennesaw State University’s Department of Theatre and Performance Studies (TPS) will examine those questions as they present “Macbeth” running Feb. 13-23 at the Stillwell Theater. TPS Faculty and Director Marlon Andrew Burnley says that the play “explores the destructive power of ambition, the fragility of the human soul, and the consequences of choices made in pursuit of power.”

Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy: A Comprehensive Review, Taha Shaikh, Darren Nguyen, Jasmine Dugal, Michael Dicaro, Brianna Yee, Nazanin Houshmand, Kachon Lei, Ali Namazi

Department of Internal Medicine Faculty Research

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is characterized by structural abnormalities, arrhythmias, and a spectrum of genetic and clinical manifestations. Clinically, ARVC is structurally distinguished by right ventricular dilation due to increased adiposity and fibrosis in the ventricular walls, and it manifests as cardiac arrhythmias ranging from non-sustained ventricular tachycardia to sudden cardiac death. Its prevalence has been estimated to range from 1 in every 1000 to 5000 people, with its large range being attributed to the variability in genetic penetrance from asymptomatic to significant burden. It is even suggested that the prevalence is underestimated, as the presence of genotypic mutations …
