The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-induced coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has challenged the current understanding of the complement cascade mechanisms of host immune responses during infection-induced nonresolvable lung disease. While the complement system is involved in opsonization and phagocytosis of the invading pathogens, uncontrolled complement activation also leads to aberrant autophagic response and tissue damage. Our recent study revealed unique pathologic and fibrotic signature genes associated with epithelial bronchiolization in the lung tissues of patients with nonresolvable COVID-19 (NR-COVID-19) requiring lung transplantation. However, there is a knowledge gap if complement components are modulated to contribute to tissue …

This paper examined the interaction between narrative performance, language exposure, and standardized measures of morphosyntax and semantics, in bilingual children tested two times, 1 year apart. We aimed to 1) identify the factor structure of oral narrative measures, and 2) examine the direction and strength of the effects of (i) language exposure and (ii) the relationship between language domains and narrative production. A total of 143 Spanish (L1)-English (L2) bilingual children completed a battery of oral narrative and oral language proficiency assessments in Spanish and English at two time points (kindergarten and Grade 1). Factor analyses yielded an identical two-factor …

Introduction: Given the unique experiences of military service members and their families, military-dependent young adults (18-25 years old) with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their military or veteran families experience unique barriers to accessing quality mental health care during the transition to adulthood. In fact, developing services to address ASD challenges for military families is a burgeoning area of interest for the department of defense. However, there is a limited knowledge on the specific needs of military families as the young adult's transition outside of high school and lose supports.

Annual influenza vaccination is recommended for all persons aged ≥6 months in the United States. Interim influenza vaccine effectiveness (VE) was calculated among patients with acute respiratory illness–associated outpatient visits and hospitalizations from four VE networks during the 2024–25 influenza season (October 2024–February 2025). Among children and adolescents aged <18 years, VE against any influenza was 32%, 59%, and 60% in the outpatient setting in three networks, and against influenza-associated hospitalization was 63% and 78% in two networks. Among adults aged ≥18 years, VE in the outpatient setting was 36% and 54% in two networks and was 41% and 55% against hospitalization in two networks. Preliminary estimates indicate that receipt of the 2024–2025 influenza vaccine reduced the likelihood of medically attended influenza and influenza-associated hospitalization. CDC recommends annual receipt of an age-appropriate influenza vaccine by all eligible persons aged ≥6 months as long as influenza viruses continue to circulate locally.

Objective: Most adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) do not achieve recommended glycemic targets, placing them at risk for long-term complications. Executive functioning (EF), or the cognitive processes that support goal-directed action and management of behavior, emotion, and cognition, is proposed to support effective T1D management and contribute to glycemic stability. We sought to examine associations of EF with T1D management behaviors and diabetes-related distress in adolescents with T1D.
Methods: Participants were 13–17-year-olds (M = 15.44, SD = 1.38 years) from a randomized controlled trial (N = 88). We conducted secondary analyses of preintervention data. Youth and their …

This paper explores the intersection of race, religion, and colonial legacies through the lens of the Oruro Carnival, examining its role in shaping Bolivian identity. Critical religion scholars argue that the entanglement of race and religion is a product of Western modernity and colonialism, which has influenced both historical and contemporary power relations. This framework is applied to analyse the Carnival, where religious practices and festive performances intersect, reflecting colonial efforts at religious conversion and racial categorisation. By focusing on the ethnography of Oruro’s embodied festive practices, this study investigates how the Carnival contributes to the construction of difference amid …

Patients with myeloid neoplasms with loss-of-function TP53 mutations and erythroid differentiation have poor outcomes, and a better understanding of disease biology is required. Upregulation of interferon-γ (IFN-γ) signaling has been associated with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) progression and chemotherapy resistance, but its drivers remain unclear. In this study, we found that the surface receptor C-C motif chemokine receptor-like 2 (CCRL2) is overexpressed in AML with erythroid differentiation and TP53 mutations compared to other AML subtypes and healthy hematopoietic cells. The knockout (KO) of CCRL2 suppressed erythroleukemia growth in vitro and in vivo . Further proteomics and transcriptomics analysis revealed IFN-γ …

Precision Metagenomics In Elder Care: Renovating Infection Diagnostics And Antimicrobial Stewardship, Rob E. Carpenter
Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remains a critical challenge in elder care, where frequent infections, polypharmacy, and immunosenescence contribute to poor outcomes. Traditional diagnostic methods, including culture-based and polymerase chain reaction assays, often fail to provide timely, comprehensive microbial identification, leading to prolonged empirical antibiotic use and worsening resistance trends. Precision metagenomics, a clinically refined application of next-generation sequencing, represents a transformative advancement in infection diagnostics and antimicrobial stewardship. By enabling culture-independent, high-resolution pathogen detection directly from clinical samples, precision metagenomics provides real-time identification of bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic pathogens, along with their antimicrobial resistance profiles. This approach facilitates early intervention, …

Background: Despite advances in anti-seizure medications (ASMs) for people with epilepsy (PWE), adverse outcomes, negative health events (NHEs), and breakthrough seizures remain common. Rescue medication (RM) can better manage repetitive seizures, but barriers to RM use persist. Self-management for PWE and a history of NHEs (SMART) is an evidence-based epilepsy self-management program aimed at reducing barriers and maximizing facilitators to self-care in high-risk PWE. Methods: This 2-phase, ongoing clinical trial adapts SMART to integrate RM support for PWE with repetitive seizures. Phase 1, now completed, used input from an advisory board (AB) of PWE, caregivers, and clinicians to adapt the …

‘Always A Teacher’: Mindy Jae Brown Drawn To Career In Education From A Young Age, Office Of University Communications, Makella Knowles
Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive
Mindy Jae Brown had the makings of a teacher from a young age. From playing “teacher” while she was growing up, to interning at an elementary school during her senior year of high school, teaching has been a strong theme in Brown’s life. Now in her second year at Gardner-Webb as a senior elementary education major, Brown is gearing up to begin her student teaching next year. While she didn’t settle on being a teacher until her junior year of high school, she says her mom “always saw me as a teacher” and “everything else was just a phase.”

Tau is a microtubule-associated protein that undergoes liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) to form condensates under physiological conditions, facilitating microtubule stabilization and intracellular transport. LLPS has also been implicated in pathological Tau aggregation, which contributes to tauopathies such as Alzheimer's disease. While LLPS is known to promote Tau aggregation, the relationship between Tau's structural states and its phase separation behavior remains poorly defined. Here, we examine how oligomerization modulates Tau LLPS and uncover key distinctions between monomeric, oligomeric, and amyloidogenic Tau species. Using dynamic light scattering and fluorescence microscopy, we monitored oligomer formation over time and assessed oligomeric Tau's ability to …

Hear’Em Out! 10th-Grade Student Interest In And Experiences Of Stem At An International High School In Honduras, Blake B. Swanson
Doctorate in Education
Our world’s needs are rapidly shifting due to technology and innovation. Yet is education changing to appropriately prepare students? Are students even interested in pursuing an education oriented around science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)? Dominant theorists in this arena have been Jacqueline Eccles and Allan Wigfield with Situated Expectancy Value Theory (SEVT) and Robert Lent and Steven Brown with Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT). Nonetheless, Central America remains an understudied region generally and even more so regarding these explanatory theories about student interest. This study sought to investigate this question at the high school level by conducting interviews and …
