Comparative Evaluation Of Linear Regression, Cross Validation And Regularization Approaches In Multivariate Data Analysis, Ransford Owusu, Felix Yeboah, Francis Effah Boateng Feb 2025

Comparative Evaluation Of Linear Regression, Cross Validation And Regularization Approaches In Multivariate Data Analysis, Ransford Owusu, Felix Yeboah, Francis Effah Boateng

Data Science and Data Mining

This study evaluates linear regression and its enhanced variants incorporating cross-validation and regularization techniques for high-dimensional, multivariate datasets. We address challenges such as multicollinearity and overfitting. Methods including Ridge, LASSO, and Elastic Net are compared against ordinary least squares regression. Empirical analysis using an automobile dataset for fuel efficiency prediction shows that while OLS regression captures basic relationships, its limitations are mitigated through regularization and cross-validation, resulting in improved model interpretability. The findings provide a comprehensive framework for predictive modeling in complex data environments and offer insights into statistical methodology and practical applications in the automobile industry.

The English Apocalypse: A Fourteenth-Century Translation Of The Book Of Revelation From Columbia University, Ms Plimpton Add. 03, Ethan Campbell

TEAMS Middle English Texts

Before the Wycliffite Bible in the 1380s, one of the only complete books of the Bible to be translated into Middle English was the Book of Revelation. The English Apocalypse, translated from the French sometime in the early 14th century, must have been well known to the later translators, since it appears in 18 extant manuscripts, sometimes alongside Wycliffite material. This edition reproduces, for the first time, a copy of the English Apocalypse, which actually replaced the Book of Revelation at the end of a Wycliffite New Testament. Whether the manuscript compiler simply preferred this version or meant it to …

Encouraging Conversation: Sharing The Oral History Of Nepalese Refugees Through Dialogical Preaching To Inspire Intercultural Collaboration, Matthew Clark

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

Clark, Matthew J. “Encouraging Conversation: Sharing the Oral History of Nepalese Refugees through Dialogical Preaching to Inspire Intercultural Collaboration.” Doctor of Ministry. Major Applied Project, Concordia Seminary, 2025. 286 pp.

The project attends to the context of Ascension Lutheran Church in St. Louis, Missouri, where a minority group of church members are refugees from Nepal. As Ascension grows in ethnic diversity, however, much of the congregation has only a shallow multicultural level of engagement, where different cultural groups are only aware of each other as they exist parallel to one another with limited interaction.

The project seeks to answer the …

Performing Protest, Performing Memory: Speech Act Theory And January 6, Mary Lynne Gasaway Hill Feb 2025

Performing Protest, Performing Memory: Speech Act Theory And January 6, Mary Lynne Gasaway Hill

Faculty Scholarship

In daily life, memory performs a staggering array of tasks. It offers reassurance, validation, legitimation, and approval. It transgresses boundaries and polices them. It confirms understandings and undermines them. It warms our hearts and chills our blood. In the realm of protest, as this article will show, memory works through intentional language use. In the context of activism, acts of memory are often performative: they aim not just to restate the status quo, but to change something about it. This chapter operationalises J.L. Austin’s Speech Act Theory (1994, SAT) as a lens through which to examine how the contentious discourse …

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Abstract Urban areas are foci for the introduction of non-native plant species, and they often act as launching sites for invasions into the wider environment. Although interest in biological invasions in urban areas is growing rapidly, and the extent and complexity of problems associated with invasions in these systems have increased, data on the composition and numbers of non-native plants in urbanized areas remain scattered and idiosyncratic. We assembled data from multiple sources to create the Global Urban Biological Invasions Compendium (GUBIC) for vascular plants representing 553 urban centres from 61 countries across every continent except Antarctica. The GUBIC repository …

Vermonters Continue To Approve Of Scott, Generally Positive Towards His Education Reform Plan 2/24/2025, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Phil Scott remains a popular governor in Vermont, with many citing his handling of taxes and education as reasons they approve of his job performance. Vermonters are generally supportive of several aspects of an educational reform proposal put forward by Scott, as four in ten believe the state currently spends too much on education. Nearly two-thirds support a legislative initiative to ban guns where alcohol is served. More than half of Vermonters cite housing, taxes, or the cost of living as the most important problem facing the state.

Disapproval Of Mills Climbs In Maine; Majority Support Increase In Teacher Pay, Cigarette Tax 2/24/2025, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Mainers are divided over Janet Mills' performance as governor of Maine, with half of her detractors mentioning her handling of the state's budget or finances as the reason for their disapproval. Housing remains the most important problem in the minds of Mainers, but the state budget and taxes are growing areas of concern. A plurality believe Maine spends too little on education and most support a proposed increase in teacher pay. Most also support a $1 increase in the cigarette tax and a slim majority support a proposed constitutional amendment related to noncitizen voting.

Non-Invasive Real-Time Pulsed Doppler Assessment Of Blood Flow In Mouse Ophthalmic Artery, Iraida Sharina, Radwa Awad, Soren Cobb, Emil Martin, Sean P Marrelli, Anilkumar K Reddy

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Non-invasive and high-temporal resolution methods for characterizing blood flow in mouse cranial arteries, such as the ophthalmic artery (OphA), are lacking. We present an application of pulsed Doppler ultrasound to provide real-time, non-invasive measurement of blood flow velocity in the OphA through an identified soft tissue window in the mouse head. We confirmed the identity of the artery and mapped its origin from the internal carotid artery by a combination of microcomputed tomography (microCT) vascular imaging and transient occlusion of the internal carotid artery. Application of our approach demonstrated sex differences in the OphA vasodilative response to agonists. We also …

A Tolerated Terror: Rahmah Bin Jabir And The Age Of Revolutions In The Gulf, 1760-1830, Nicholas P. Roberts

Student Scholarship

Rahmah bin Jabir (c. 1760-1826) is one of the most frequently mentioned persons in British sources from the Gulf in the first decades of the nineteenth century. He is also found throughout important Arabic-language chronicles. Despite his prominence in the sources, however, scholars have paid him relatively little attention, in either English or in Arabic. Though often cast as a pirate, this article argues that Rahmah bin Jabir was a political entrepreneur critical to shaping the international order of the Gulf in the first half of the nineteenth century. Reading against the grain of the colonial archive and synthesizing British …

Assessing The Effects Of Long-Covid On Mental Health In The United States: A Population Based Study, Anusua Datta

School of Business Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: While most individuals recover fully from COVID-19, a significant proportion of survivors experience prolonged symptoms lasting three months or more, a condition commonly referred to as long-COVID. Long-COVID conditions have been associated with reduced quality of life. By utilizing a nationally representative sample of nearly a million Americans, this study provides insights into the prevalence and impact of long-COVID on anxiety and depression in the U.S.

METHODS: We utilize the Household Pulse Survey data, which provides the first population-based sample on the prevalence of long-COVID, beginning with its June 2022 wave. This survey also includes questions on respondents' mental …

Microfabrication Of Sic Using Femtosecond Lasers, Jared Eldon Payne Feb 2025

Microfabrication Of Sic Using Femtosecond Lasers, Jared Eldon Payne

Theses and Dissertations

Silicon carbide (SiC) is a desirable material in a wide variety of semiconductor fields. The impressive thermal, chemical, and mechanical properties that make SiC an attractive material also make it very difficult to machine. New fabrication techniques are required to take full advantage of the potential of SiC. First, a new 3-dimensional (3D) non-line-of-sight (NLOS) fabrication technique using two-photon absorption is demonstrated in SiC. NLOS microchannels are shown with aspect ratios higher than 100:1. The process is the only method known, at this time, that can create truly 3D subsurface structures in SiC without direct line of sight to the …

Navigating The Neoliberal Assemblage: The Role Of A Nonprofit Organization Shaping Disaster Governance And Community Resilience, Andrew Michael Russo

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the evolving role of Nonprofits Active in Disasters ("NADs") in disaster governance through a case study of the Cascade Relief Team, a nonprofit organization responding to the 2020 Echo Mountain Complex Fire in Oregon. Utilizing governmentality and assemblage theory frameworks, the study investigates how CRT navigates the complex interplay between neoliberal rationalities, community needs, and disaster response practices.

The research reveals CRT's multifaceted role in shaping disaster knowledge, mediating between official frameworks and local realities, and influencing the formation of resilient subjectivities. While CRT's practices often align with neoliberal approaches to disaster management, emphasizing individual responsibility and …
