For A Decolonial Approach To Game Design Methods Beyond Representation, Rafael Arrivabene Feb 2025

For A Decolonial Approach To Game Design Methods Beyond Representation, Rafael Arrivabene

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This article draws attention to game design methods in decolonialist studies. As the importance of systematization in game design starts to become apparent, there is an opportunity to challenge the normalization of values, tropes, and power fantasies that have shaped the industry over the years. The article discusses the ways in which colonialist values permeate recurrent elements of game design, contrasting it with characteristics found in pre-colonial games and how they can be related to indigenous perspectives, which usually do not fit capitalist premises.

A Multi-Model And Multi-Agency Approach To Expand The Flood Inundation Mapping Capacity Of The Us National Water Center, Samuel Jay Oldham Feb 2025

A Multi-Model And Multi-Agency Approach To Expand The Flood Inundation Mapping Capacity Of The Us National Water Center, Samuel Jay Oldham

Theses and Dissertations

The most accurate numerical model for simulating flood extents of rivers has long been a subject of debate. While specialized models exist for specific hydraulic features, we advocate for the principle that the best model is the one the user is familiar with, has adequate data to support input requirements and limitations, and will consistently employ. To support this approach, we have developed a database schema optimized to store riverine flood inundation model output files. This schema is designed to assist U.S. cities, counties, states, and other flood management agencies in leveraging their existing model-generated flood maps, regardless of the …

Two-Key Dependent Permutation (Tkdp) And Its Applications In Information Security, Arulmani K Feb 2025

Two-Key Dependent Permutation (Tkdp) And Its Applications In Information Security, Arulmani K

Theses and Dissertations

Two-Key Dependent Permutation (TKDP) algorithm for generating permutation sequences of fixed sizes, TKDP based Symmetric Block Cipher (TKDPSBC) and TKDP Audio encryption are being proposed in this thesis. TKDP algorithm is capable of generating different sequences for different key pairs. This makes it suitable for constructing dynamic S-boxes and P-boxes that have more degree of randomness and non-linearity to resist cryptanalytic attacks. Rigorous statistical tests validate the efficacy of the generated permutation sequences, affirming their suitability for cryptographic applications in conjunction with Fiestel network-based block ciphers. TKDPSBC encrypts a plaintext block into a ciphertext block of the same size. TKDP …

Publications

The electroelastomer cylindrical actuators, a typical representation of soft actuators, have recently aroused increasing interest owing to their advantages in flexibility, deformability, and spatial utilization rate. Proprioception is crucial for controlling and monitoring the shape and position of these actuators. However, most existing flexible sensors have a modulus mismatch with the actuation unit, hindering the free movement of these actuators. Herein, a low-modulus strain sensor based on laser-induced cellular graphitic flakes (CGF) onto the surface of hollow TPU fibers (HTF) is present. Through the electrostatic self-assembly technology, the flexible sensor features a unique hybrid sensing unit including soft HTF as …

Uncovering Moral Injury At Work: The Development And Initial Validation Of The Moral Injury At Work Scale (Miws), Megan J. Snoeyink

Dissertations and Theses

Employees frequently encounter situations at work that present moral or ethical dilemmas. Consequently, they may engage in immoral actions, witness moral violations, or fail to intervene when their coworkers behave immorally. Repeated exposure to such moral challenges can lead to moral injury--the damage to one's moral code and self-image resulting from witnessing, failing to prevent, or participating in what is perceived as an immoral act. Despite the potential for moral injury in workplace contexts, research has yet to adequately explore or measure this phenomenon. This dissertation addresses this gap by developing and validating the Moral Injury at Work Scale (MIWS). …

Drug discovery is a critical task in biomedical natural language processing (NLP), yet explainable drug discovery remains underexplored. Meanwhile, large language models (LLMs) have shown remarkable abilities in natural language understanding and generation. Leveraging LLMs for explainable drug discovery has the potential to improve downstream tasks and real-world applications. In this study, we utilize open-source drug knowledge graphs, clinical trial data, and PubMed publications to construct a comprehensive dataset for the explainable drug discovery task, named \textbf{expRxRec}. Furthermore, we introduce \textbf{KEDRec-LM}, an instruction-tuned LLM which distills knowledge from rich medical knowledge corpus for drug recommendation and rationale generation. To encourage …

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-induced coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has challenged the current understanding of the complement cascade mechanisms of host immune responses during infection-induced nonresolvable lung disease. While the complement system is involved in opsonization and phagocytosis of the invading pathogens, uncontrolled complement activation also leads to aberrant autophagic response and tissue damage. Our recent study revealed unique pathologic and fibrotic signature genes associated with epithelial bronchiolization in the lung tissues of patients with nonresolvable COVID-19 (NR-COVID-19) requiring lung transplantation. However, there is a knowledge gap if complement components are modulated to contribute to tissue …

Carnival, Ritual, And Race-Thinking In The Bolivian Andes, Ximena Cordova, Adhemar Mercado

All Works

This paper explores the intersection of race, religion, and colonial legacies through the lens of the Oruro Carnival, examining its role in shaping Bolivian identity. Critical religion scholars argue that the entanglement of race and religion is a product of Western modernity and colonialism, which has influenced both historical and contemporary power relations. This framework is applied to analyse the Carnival, where religious practices and festive performances intersect, reflecting colonial efforts at religious conversion and racial categorisation. By focusing on the ethnography of Oruro’s embodied festive practices, this study investigates how the Carnival contributes to the construction of difference amid …

Patients with myeloid neoplasms with loss-of-function TP53 mutations and erythroid differentiation have poor outcomes, and a better understanding of disease biology is required. Upregulation of interferon-γ (IFN-γ) signaling has been associated with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) progression and chemotherapy resistance, but its drivers remain unclear. In this study, we found that the surface receptor C-C motif chemokine receptor-like 2 (CCRL2) is overexpressed in AML with erythroid differentiation and TP53 mutations compared to other AML subtypes and healthy hematopoietic cells. The knockout (KO) of CCRL2 suppressed erythroleukemia growth in vitro and in vivo . Further proteomics and transcriptomics analysis revealed IFN-γ …
