The Syrian Tabqa Dam: Its Development And Impact, Monib Ei-Khatib Mar 2025

The Syrian Tabqa Dam: Its Development And Impact, Monib Ei-Khatib

The Geographical Bulletin

The Euphrates River has its sources in eastern Turkey's Anatolian Plateau and extends 3,000 kilometers through Syria and Iraq before it discharges into the river's delta at Shat AI-Arab in the Arabian Gulf. It is an exotic river, a center of past civilization and population, and a managed river with an extensive delta. It floods in early summer but its flooded area dries-out very quickly in the semiarid climate. The Euphrates River can maintain an annual flow throughout its course because of relatively high rainfall and snow-melt at higher elevations. Utilization of its drainage basin has been intensified from its …

English As A Second Language, Airi Yamabe, Sofia Brenes Canales, Angelene White, Raquel Gomez

Andrews University Teaching and Learning Conference

This presentation focuses on students who learn English as a second language (ESL) in the U.S. and provides general information, including data on their population based on their first languages. It examines the challenges they face in school by presenting our findings and the personal experience of one of the presenters. Considering these challenges, we suggest teaching strategies to support them. Additionally, we propose recommended classroom ideas that would help these students learn English effectively.

Mental Maps Of Language Distribution In Rio Grande Do Sui (Brazil), Denni R. Preston Mar 2025

Mental Maps Of Language Distribution In Rio Grande Do Sui (Brazil), Denni R. Preston

The Geographical Bulletin

Preston, 1982 used informant-drawn maps to show young, well-educated Hawaiians' perceptions of language differences in the United States. Figure 4 displays one informant's response to the request to outline and label areas where people " speak differently." Figure 5 shows the technique (similar to the "bundling of isoglosses" in traditional dialect geography) which permits a composite (Figure 6) to be created.

Editorial Comments, Robert M. Ward

The Geographical Bulletin

The message in this issue is directed to my teaching colleagues, but it is also appropriate for the student body. My topic pertains to enrichment and overall maturity of our students beyond the subject matter in our geographic specialities. From a student perspective the contents of this editorial applies to those majoring in any educational pursuit. Specifically I am concerned about the development of writing and oratory skills, as well as personal and character growth. This is predicated on the assumption that college graduates should be expected to attain some level of leadership and consequently should have mastered the knowledge, …

Comparative Negligence In Jackson V. Frederick's Motor Inn: What Is Compared?, Nancy Lynn Diesel Mar 2025

Comparative Negligence In Jackson V. Frederick's Motor Inn: What Is Compared?, Nancy Lynn Diesel

Maine Law Review

Before 1965, the defense of contributory negligence was an absolute bar to a plaintiff's recovery in tort actions in Maine. Under the contributory negligence principle, any degree of fault attributable to the plaintiff defeated his or her claim; the fault of the plaintiff and of the defendant was not compared. In 1965, the Maine Legislature enacted the Comparative Negligence Act in order to eliminate the harshness and inequities of the contributory negligence doctrine. The Act also served to stop juries from using compromise verdicts to reach a fair result. Under the Act, a plaintiff's fault is compared with that of …

The International Law Of Maritime Boundary Delimitation, Edward Collins Jr., Martin A. Rogoff Mar 2025

The International Law Of Maritime Boundary Delimitation, Edward Collins Jr., Martin A. Rogoff

Maine Law Review

The law of the sea, in its essence, divides the seas into zones and specifies the rights and duties of states and ships flying their flags in those zones. Now that states are claiming extensive seaward jurisdiction both on the continental shelf and in the water column, attention has begun to shift from delimiting continental shelf boundaries or economic zone boundaries to the delimitation of a single maritime boundary which would serve both purposes. There are significant legal differences between the delimitation of a single maritime boundary and the delimitation of either a continental shelf boundary or an exclusive economic …

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

There is a need to develop culturally relevant psychological care informed by the experiences of clinicians working with Latinx youth and families. The present qualitative interview-based study explored the challenges Latinx adolescents with suicidal behaviors and their families confront from the perspective of mental health providers. Ten interviews were conducted with mental health clinicians from various clinical settings. An ecological and developmental theoretical framework was used to analyze the data. The five overarching themes identified were: 1) Acculturation and enculturation gap challenges between caregivers and adolescents, 2) Language and cultural gaps with the host society affecting families’ ability to navigate …

Criminal Contempt In Maine: Constitutionally Protected Or Neglected?, Christopher D. Hardy Mar 2025

Criminal Contempt In Maine: Constitutionally Protected Or Neglected?, Christopher D. Hardy

Maine Law Review

The power to punish contempt of court is an ancient power justified as inherent and necessary for the effective administration of justice. Because criminal contempts are willful challenges to the power of a court to maintain control over its proceedings, contempts are acts which serve to lessen the dignity and authority of the court. Certainly, the maintenance of decorum in the courtrooms is of paramount importance. Absent the ability to sanction willful disobedience, a court is powerless to enforce its decrees or control its proceedings. Yet it is a power readily open to abuse; application of this power must be …
