Accounting Industry Decline: Analyzing Enrollment And Retention Challenges, Raegan Rapoza Apr 2025

Accounting Industry Decline: Analyzing Enrollment And Retention Challenges, Raegan Rapoza

Honors Projects in Accounting

Within the accounting industry, there have been rising concerns about the decline in student enrollment along with accountants leaving the profession. Employee turnover is one of the most heavily studied and discussed topics in accounting. Additionally, the profession does not obtain the highly respected reputation that it once did, and university accounting programs are one place where this issue is clearly seen. This study uses enrollment data to establish this decrease across universities as well as retention data across CPA firms. A survey is administered to students, faculty and staff throughout several universities. Industry professionals are interviewed to gain perspective …

The Renewable Divide: Examining The Impact Of Renewable Energy On Pollution Across Development Levels, Andrea Ortiz Mieses Apr 2025

The Renewable Divide: Examining The Impact Of Renewable Energy On Pollution Across Development Levels, Andrea Ortiz Mieses

Honors Projects in Mathematics and Economics

This paper uses linear regression to analyze the relationship between renewable energy and environmental quality in both developed and developing countries. Developed nations often have stricter regulations and lower pollution levels, while developing nations prioritize economic growth, leading to rising pollution. Using data from the World Bank, World Health Organization, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, and the International Monetary Fund, this research aims to identify how renewable energy consumption in these contrasting contexts impact environmental outcomes. The analysis explores the effectiveness of various environmental conditions, using regression analysis to assess the impact of renewable energy on air pollution. …

Can Belief Be Compelled? Evidence From Salem, Stewart Justman Apr 2025

Can Belief Be Compelled? Evidence From Salem, Stewart Justman

Global Humanities and Religions Faculty Publications

In his Letter Concerning Toleration Locke argues forcefully that belief cannot be compelled under any circumstances. I put this proposition to the test by examining false confessions extracted during the Salem witch-hunt only three years after Locke’s letter was translated into English. Evidence in the Salem records—in particular, a deposition signed by six accused witches—establishes that a number of confessors believed their own false narratives at the time they offered them. Of great psychological interest, these cases give us a sense of what the Salem hysteria felt like to those engulfed by it. They also invalidate Locke’s claim that belief …

A Comparative Study Of Future Time Perception And Motivation Between General Education Development (Ged) Students And Traditional Four-Year High School Students, Jared D. Brown Apr 2025

A Comparative Study Of Future Time Perception And Motivation Between General Education Development (Ged) Students And Traditional Four-Year High School Students, Jared D. Brown

Doctor of Education (EdD)

Students, especially those in general education development (GED) programs, are at a higher disadvantage when it comes to postsecondary success and readiness than traditional high school students. Despite being a small percentage of the population, GED students have the same motivation and optimism as other students and should be given the tools and skills necessary to be successful. Two surveys, the Adolescent Time Inventory (ATI; C. D. Mello et al., 2013) and the Global Motivation Scale-28 (GMS-28; Guay et al., 2003a) were used in this study to compare student motivation and time perception between traditional diploma seekers and GED seekers …

Baccalaureate Nursing Admissions And Academic Predictors Of Timely Program Completion, Catherine A. Kacalek Apr 2025

Baccalaureate Nursing Admissions And Academic Predictors Of Timely Program Completion, Catherine A. Kacalek

Doctor of Education (EdD)

The purpose of this study was to examine academic and demographic variables that predict timely completion of a bachelor of science in nursing program. Timely completion of a nursing curriculum affects current students, future students, health care organizations, and the general public. The purpose of this quantitative, retrospective study was to identify evidence-based academic admission criteria that would help select pre-nursing students mostly likely to complete the nursing curriculum on time, without failures. The variables of age, gender, ethnicity, and transfer student status were also analyzed to determine their impact on timely completion. The study utilized logistic regression and receiver …

From The League Of Nations To Pearl Harbor: Measuring Isolationism In The Interwar Period 1918-1939, David K. Bendlin Apr 2025

From The League Of Nations To Pearl Harbor: Measuring Isolationism In The Interwar Period 1918-1939, David K. Bendlin

GLI MA in American History Student Works

The complicated and contradictory task of balancing the isolationist foreign policy backed by public-opinion and political pressures, while remaining influential and involvement in international affairs, is best exemplified in the early years of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency. In his first few months in office, Roosevelt positioned himself as an internationalist and moved to expand American influence overseas. In 1933, Roosevelt recognized the Soviet Union and pushed for arms embargos on aggressor nations. In 1934, Roosevelt passed the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act to boost international trade. In 1935, Roosevelt pushed for the US to join the World Court to extend American …

Tracing Pharmaceuticals In Produce: Their Presence, Effects, And Consumer Perspectives, Savanna N. Crooks Apr 2025

Tracing Pharmaceuticals In Produce: Their Presence, Effects, And Consumer Perspectives, Savanna N. Crooks

Honors Theses

As prescription pharmaceuticals increasingly infiltrate agricultural systems, their unmonitored presence in produce products raises critical concerns about environmental contamination and human health risks. Using a mixed methods approach, combining a literature review and anonymous survey, the presence, fate, and transport of PCs in produce products, potential health effects, and consumer knowledge and perspectives were evaluated. It was found that the presence of PCs spanned across all classes of PCs and were present in locations among all types of environmental media, especially those used for agricultural production. Water contamination was shown as the primary source of transport that led to the …

Advancing Inclusivity: The Case For Change In Law Enforcement Training Regarding Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities And Autism, Sarah Stendel Apr 2025

Advancing Inclusivity: The Case For Change In Law Enforcement Training Regarding Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities And Autism, Sarah Stendel

Honors Theses

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disability (ID) are two neurodevelopmental disorders that, while different, can overlap for some individuals. ASD can present itself in difficulties in areas such as communication, processing of senses, and restricted and/or repetitive behavior. ID can present itself in ways such as difficulties with social skills, reasoning, problem-solving, and processing information. This honors thesis began from the thought that both ASD and ID may make any encounter with law enforcement officers more challenging as compared to law enforcement interactions with neurotypical individuals. In fact, research referenced in this thesis project shows that police officers frequently …

Let's Talk About The Writers Guild Of America On Strike 2023, Rylee Perry

Student Zines

The Writer's Strike of 2023 was a very impactful event in Hollywood for people of the industry to stand together as one.

This event allowed the people of Hollywood to stand with the writers in the fight for fair compensation. It is not very common for screen writers to be valued for their work anymore than having it published and put into the works. The compensation and recognition is poor, leaving the writers at a disadvantage to continue the struggle of making ends meet in their everyday lives.

This zine was created for ENG 120, Writing in the Disciplines with …

In Search Of The Best Policies For Translational Geroscience, Tom W. Bell, Kalon Boston Apr 2025

In Search Of The Best Policies For Translational Geroscience, Tom W. Bell, Kalon Boston

UC Law Science and Technology Journal

Though it once seemed like an inevitable fact of life, geroscience can now credibly promise to slow and even reverse aging. New geroscience treatments offer the prospect of large increases in human welfare and will attract huge demand. How can governments best support research, development, and commercialization of the field? The answer will depend on many factors, including public policies, supply-side resources, and market size. This paper focuses on the first factor, seeking the best public policies for translating geroscience from bench to bedside. It begins with a review of current geroscience policy, identifying the rules and institutions that help …

Master of Arts in Classical Studies

Abstract

SCIENCE EDUCATION IN THE MODERN WORLD: A COMPARISON OF THE CLASSICAL CHRISTIAN AND STEM MODELS OF EDUCATION

Diane R. Gray

Southeastern University

As a classical Christian educator and leader and a former professional scientist, this author has fielded questions and concerns from parents who have wondered if classical Christian education (CCE) will provide strong instruction in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Because parents have expressed concerns about science and math education, and with the growing renewal of classical Christian education, the question addressed in this expository research project is ‘How do the CCE and STEM models of education …

Pilot Application Of Biometric-Based Vehicle Occupancy Detection On Managed Lanes For Congestion Reduction, Sara J. Hendricks, Philip L. Winters, Poojitha Bolleni

Research Reports

This study tested the accuracy and reliability of a biometric vehicle occupancy detection technology. Downloaded onto a carpooler’s mobile device, the app enables measuring the number of passengers in a vehicle for purposes of high occupancy vehicle (HOV) and high occupancy toll (HOT) lane management and incentivization. Volunteers recruited from South Florida, the Tampa Bay area, and Utah used the app to log carpool trips that were recorded and validated by the app. The data were compared against digital photos taken at the same time as the trip to verify that the carpool validation was correct. A survey was conducted …

Augustana As A Physically Religious Institution: The Evolving Relationship With The Church, Lillian A. Mcclintock Apr 2025

Augustana As A Physically Religious Institution: The Evolving Relationship With The Church, Lillian A. Mcclintock

Race, Ethnicity, & Religion

This paper looks at the evolution of Augustana College and Theological Seminary from a profane space to a secular one. First, I look at how the Augustana Theological Seminary’s relationship with the College has changed over time. Tying in themes from Vásquez’s reading, with how Seminary’s location as a prominent point on campus demonstrates spatial hierarchy. Secondly, I will look at the hourly bells emanating from Old Main, bringing in Religion is Not Done With You, the discussion falls to the invisibility of religious structures as they largely fade into the background alongside lived religion. Finally, the paper will assess …

“Like A Fish Being Judged By My Ability To Fly”: Barriers To Accessibility In Postgraduate Study, Molly E. Thompson Apr 2025

“Like A Fish Being Judged By My Ability To Fly”: Barriers To Accessibility In Postgraduate Study, Molly E. Thompson

Publications and Research

This research paper explores the unique accessibility challenges faced by disabled postgraduate students and what can be done to address them. Testimonies and formal studies alike show how disabled graduate students have to deal with stigmatizing attitudes from their instructors (especially if they hold intersectional marginalized identities) on top of systemic barriers such as strict deadlines, unsustainably heavy workloads, inaccessible travel requirements, and disability services that are not suited to undergraduate needs. These problems are especially prominent in medical school where demands on time and energy are especially rigorous. To address these issues, disability service programs must be reformed to …
