Honey, I’M Home!, Kayla Lockwood Apr 2025

Honey, I’M Home!, Kayla Lockwood

Art Student Research

Honey, I’m Home! revisits the idealized domestic life of the 1950s and 60s, drawing inspiration from iconic sitcoms The Honeymooners and I Love Lucy. The exhibition explores how gender roles within the traditional nuclear family have evolved. Through the lens of nostalgia, it delves into the emotional landscape of the childhood home. In this place, the comforting scents of family life intermingle with memories of laughter and warmth. However, this familiar setting is transformed into a deeper reflection on grief, memory, and identity.

Computational Methods For Enhancing The Quality And Interoperability Of Biomedical Terminologies, Xubing Hao Apr 2025

Computational Methods For Enhancing The Quality And Interoperability Of Biomedical Terminologies, Xubing Hao

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Biomedical ontologies or terminologies not only serve as a part of the metadata standards for describing data in the FAIR Data Principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), but also play a vital role in downstream applications such as cohort identification from electronic health records (EHR). However, there are two critical barriers that may lead to ambiguity, complexity, and inaccuracies in such ontology-based downstream applications. The first barrier is the quality of the ontology. Despite efforts by ontology curators to ensure ontology accuracy and comprehensiveness, errors and inconsistencies are unavoidable. The second barrier is the semantic heterogeneity since human experts may use …

The Ascent Of The Balthi: The Emergence Of Visigothic Kingship In Late Antiquity, William Deloach Apr 2025

The Ascent Of The Balthi: The Emergence Of Visigothic Kingship In Late Antiquity, William Deloach

Tenor of Our Times

The first four centuries of the First Millennium AD witnessed the rapid development of political infrastructure among the Gothic people. Emerging from Scandinavia, Gothic group consolidated into more nuanced political confederations by the third century. Challenges to these power structures, both internal and external, became the catalyst for further consolidation. The adaptations of the third and fourth centuries resulted in the emergence of a more easily recognizable political unit: the Visigoths under a Balthi monarchy. These challenges, and forthcoming adaptations, places the Goths within the tradition of the Late Antique world. Late Antiquity, therefore, should not only be thought to …

Speed-Coaching As A Pedagogical Practice: Decision-Making And Priorities Among Successful Speed Coaches, Dillon R. Martinez Apr 2025

Speed-Coaching As A Pedagogical Practice: Decision-Making And Priorities Among Successful Speed Coaches, Dillon R. Martinez

Education Doctorate Dissertations

This study employed a three-round Delphi study technique to identify key elements in speed development coaching by surveying 106 qualified coaches, including certified professionals, championship-winning coaches, facility operators, and NCAA strength-and-conditioning specialists. This study explored five critical domains: nonnegotiable elements of speed development, decision-making factors for teaching priorities, effective teaching methods, environmental influences, and coaching philosophies. The results revealed a significant emphasis on technique/mechanics and maximum velocity exposure as foundational speed development elements, with notable differences between elite-level and lower-level coaches. Elite coaches demonstrated more sophisticated measurement approaches through systematic data collection, advanced technical assessment tools, comprehensive performance metrics, and …

Exploring The Use Of Artificial Intelligence As An Instructional Learning Tool In Middle School Mathematics Classrooms, Maurice Guest Jr Apr 2025

Exploring The Use Of Artificial Intelligence As An Instructional Learning Tool In Middle School Mathematics Classrooms, Maurice Guest Jr

Student Theses and Dissertations

This quantitative causal-comparative study explored the effectiveness of AI instructional/learning tools, specifically the IXL platform, in middle school mathematics classrooms. In this study, AI tools, such as IXL, were investigated to determine if there was a significant influence on students’ academic growth and achievement in light of the continuing teacher shortage in Arkansas. The lack of highly qualified teachers has led to Arkansas high school students’ underperformance in mathematics. Framed by a Constructivist approach, the study viewed learning as an active, engaged experience in which students shaped their own learning, rather than passively receiving information in the classroom. Data from …

Student Theses and Dissertations

This mixed-methods study evaluated the impact of a tutoring program on third-grade students' reading achievement, focusing on rural Title I schools. The research used the Kellogg Logic Model to assess the program's short-term outcomes. It analyzed universal reading data for one hundred and three third-grade students and gathered the perspectives from nineteen stakeholders, including teachers, parents, and administrators. The researcher assessed the long-term outcomes by analyzing data on third-grade students' overall academic reading growth and by examining the stakeholders' perceptions of the program's effectiveness. The themes for the study from the participants included the benefits of tutoring, bus transportation, use …

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Co-Teaching—A Phenomenological Inquiry, Courtney Spann Apr 2025

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Co-Teaching—A Phenomenological Inquiry, Courtney Spann

Student Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to understand the phenomenon that is the congruence between secondary special and general education co-teachers’ knowledge, beliefs, and actions that characterize how they experience co-teaching. A qualitative, phenomenological research design was used to explore co-teachers’ lived experiences through one-on-one interviews and classroom observations. Purposeful and convenient sampling yielded secondary general and special education teacher participants from one large, urban school district in the United States. The findings extend Bandura’s (1986) Social Cognitive Theory, suggesting the presence of observational learning between educators in the co-taught classroom. Results also indicate an alignment between what co-teachers say, …

The Three Ps: Political Polarization, Perception, And Pedagogy, Tianka Renee Sheard Mitchell Apr 2025

The Three Ps: Political Polarization, Perception, And Pedagogy, Tianka Renee Sheard Mitchell

Student Theses and Dissertations

Political polarization significantly impacts modern education, especially within social studies, where teachers confront sensitive issues in their curricula. This study addressed two research questions: RQ1 examined teachers’ perceptions of the influence of political polarization, and RQ2 explored how these perceptions affect their pedagogy. Through the lens of Reconstructionist Educational Theory, this research highlights the necessity for social studies education to cultivate critical thinking and civic engagement among students. The study aimed to determine whether social studies teachers modify their instructional approaches in response to political polarization, as avoiding "hard history" could jeopardize students’ critical thinking and cultural literacy. Participants shared …

Property Rights And The Public Interest: Why Annapolis Group V Halifax Regional Municipality Is Wrongly Decided, Jim Phillips Apr 2025

Property Rights And The Public Interest: Why Annapolis Group V Halifax Regional Municipality Is Wrongly Decided, Jim Phillips

Dalhousie Law Journal

In a 2022 decision, Annapolis Group v. HRM, the Supreme Court of Canada, by a very narrow margin of 5-4, changed the long-standing test for a de facto expropriation, while insisting, wrongly, that it was not doing so. The requirement that the state acquire an interest in property from the regulation in question has been replaced by one that it acquire something called an “advantage.” The court was remarkably unclear about what constitutes an “advantage,’” and what kinds of ‘advantages’ will suffice. All we know kind is that “advantage” has replaced the previous requirement that the state acquire an interest …

The Law Of Heredity -- Whistelo, Whiteness And Whales, Walter J. Walsh Apr 2025

The Law Of Heredity -- Whistelo, Whiteness And Whales, Walter J. Walsh

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

This Article reveals the impact of an early New York case upon science and law, raising questions about heredity that spurred evidentiary progress from maternal imagination to visual resemblance, and later from blood groups to DNA paternity testing. In the Jeffersonian republic, a dark-skinned man was charged with reputedly fathering the infant daughter of a mixed-race woman. However, to most witnesses this light-skinned child appeared to be the offspring of a White man. The trial of Commissioners of the Alms-House, vs Alexander Whistelo, a Black man, being a Remarkable Case of Bastardy (1808) became a cause célèbre in both law …

Gender Apartheid Under The Taliban: Key Elements Of An Ideology Designed To Disempower Afghan Women, Ilias Bantekas, Asiya Karimi Apr 2025

Gender Apartheid Under The Taliban: Key Elements Of An Ideology Designed To Disempower Afghan Women, Ilias Bantekas, Asiya Karimi

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

Despite its frequent use since 2021, the notion of ‘gender apartheid’ is misconceived in terms of existing international law. The type of abhorrent policies pursued by the Taliban regime against women and girls is best conceived as gender-based persecution. Even so, there is no reason why a new and distinct international crime of gender discrimination cannot be established through soft law, domestic law, or treaty-making in order to preserve the plight of women and girls around the world who are subjected to collective discriminatory practices that deny them fundamental human rights. The crime would arise where the discriminatory practices in …

Ascending The Nonviolence Continuum: Sanjay Lal, Author Of Violence, Nonviolence, And Moral Worth, Meets Critics, Predrag Cicovacki, Jennifer Kling, Sanjay Lal, Danielle Poe

Philosophy Faculty Publications

In this author-meets-critics discussion, Sanjay Lal presents the main ideas of his book Violence, Nonviolence, and Moral Worth, arguing that nonviolence meets violence along a continuum where there are degrees of greater and lesser examples, including a wide range of examples that combine both tendencies. Lal defines nonviolence in terms of three components that emphasize attitudes over actions: (1) a willingness to not harm others, (2) wanting to facilitate the well-being of others, (3) and not sacrificing one's own moral worth. Three critics share their praises and concerns: Predrag Cicovacki challenges Lal to be more specific on the definition …

The Waiting Is The Hardest Part: The Constitutionality Of Firearm Waiting Periods, F. Lee Francis Apr 2025

The Waiting Is The Hardest Part: The Constitutionality Of Firearm Waiting Periods, F. Lee Francis

Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)

This Article examines the constitutionality of firearm waiting period laws through the lens of the Supreme Court’s evolving Second Amendment jurisprudence. Although such laws are frequently defended as prudent public safety measures, their validity turns not on legislative purpose but on constitutional principle, particularly as framed in District of Columbia v. Heller and New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen.

Under those decisions, the scope of the Second Amendment is determined not by judicial balancing of contemporary interests, but by reference to the Nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation. The Article surveys that tradition and finds no …

The Wrongly Read Right: Insurrection And The Second Amendment Right To Bear Arms, Aman Mcleod, Jacob M. Jones Apr 2025

The Wrongly Read Right: Insurrection And The Second Amendment Right To Bear Arms, Aman Mcleod, Jacob M. Jones

Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)

Several judges and scholars have interpreted the Second Amendment as creating a right to bear arms to facilitate armed resistance against the government whenever it threatens to impose tyranny. These arguments have been made in books, scholarly articles, and court decisions. Many of the proponents of the pro-armed insurrection interpretation of the Second Amendment root this point of view in the history of the right to bear arms in the Anglo-American legal tradition. This Article argues that the Second Amendment does not create a right to bear arms to resist government authority because such a right is inconsistent with several …

Big Business As Gun Control, David B. Kopel, George A. Mocsary, Bhav Ninder Singh Apr 2025

Big Business As Gun Control, David B. Kopel, George A. Mocsary, Bhav Ninder Singh

Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)

Gun control increasingly bypasses direct legislative enactments by co-opting the commercial marketplace. Financial institutions and insurers often face regulatory pressures, frequently articulated through vague notions of “reputational risk,” to terminate or restrict services for lawful firearms businesses and advocacy groups. The debanking tactic, seen in initiatives such as Operation Choke Point, can deny essential financial products to firearm owners, merchants, and organizations, curtailing the practical exercise of constitutionally protected rights. Simultaneously, government agencies sometimes pursue warrantless data collection from bank records and merchant category codes, building profiles of lawful purchasers and eroding privacy and due-process norms.

Social media platforms compound …

Dangerous And Unusual: How Heller’S Ahistorical Assumption Violates The Founders’ Original Intent, Oliver Krawczyk, Gilbert Ambler Apr 2025

Dangerous And Unusual: How Heller’S Ahistorical Assumption Violates The Founders’ Original Intent, Oliver Krawczyk, Gilbert Ambler

Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)

When the U.S. Supreme Court ended its generational silence on the Second Amendment in District of Columbia v. Heller, the Court held that “a prohibition of an entire class of ‘arms’ that is overwhelmingly chosen by American society” is “invalid.” In so holding, the Court suggested that the Constitution protects only those weapons “in common use at the time,” a limitation thought to be “fairly supported by the historical tradition of prohibiting the carrying of ‘dangerous and unusual weapons.’” The Court defined none of these terms then, and it has not since.

Over a decade of constitutional infidelity ensued. …

Opioid Prescribing Patterns And The Effect Of Chronic Kidney Disease In Pediatric Urology Population: A Retrospective Cohort Analysis., Kristen M. Meier, Darren Ha, Carter Sevick, Eliza D. Blanchette, Megan A. Brockel, Vijaya M. Vemulakonda, Kyle O. Rove Apr 2025

Opioid Prescribing Patterns And The Effect Of Chronic Kidney Disease In Pediatric Urology Population: A Retrospective Cohort Analysis., Kristen M. Meier, Darren Ha, Carter Sevick, Eliza D. Blanchette, Megan A. Brockel, Vijaya M. Vemulakonda, Kyle O. Rove

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: Significant efforts have been undertaken to decrease opioid prescribing, but there is little research into patient-specific factors presenting as barriers in the pediatric surgical population. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been shown to be a safe and effective alternative to opioids for pain control, however, concerns about their impact on renal function limit their use in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Data is limited on the interplay of CKD on opioid prescribing.

OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that opioid reduction efforts were successful, but patients with CKD would be more likely to receive an opioid prescription than those without CKD. …

Background and Significance: A patient outcome that challenges nurse leaders in healthcare settings is the issue of pressure ulcers acquired in the facilities; also known as hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPI). Pressure ulcers can lead to patient discomfort, increased morbidity and healthcare costs. Because of chronic conditions, and the dangers of immobility, patients/residents are at risk for developing pressure ulcers, and as such mitigating the risk results in better outcomes for the patients and cost-effective measures. This project was conducted in TRC facility with a focus on the Long-Term Care (LTC) and Rehabilitation units. The setting included 45 beds in LTC …

Dickens Among The Irish And Its Joycean Legacy, Daniel Burt Apr 2025

Dickens Among The Irish And Its Joycean Legacy, Daniel Burt

Bridgewater Review

Charles Dickens’s relationship with Ireland and the Irish forms an important context for an understanding of James Joyce’s somewhat ambivalent estimation of his great predecessor in the English novel. Critics have generally taken Joyce at his word that Dickens and the Victorian novelists are negligible factors in his fiction. The evidence, however, suggests otherwise. If Shakespeare was Joyce’s ultimate role model for artistic vision, Dickens is the English novelist that was equally inescapable, a forerunner to imitate and to reject. What complicated Joyce’s estimation of Dickens was the latter’s views on the Irish. Dickens visited Ireland three times on public …

Voicing Stardom: Alain Delon, Julia (Yulia) Stakhnevich Apr 2025

Voicing Stardom: Alain Delon, Julia (Yulia) Stakhnevich

Bridgewater Review

On August 18, 2024, the world lost one of its most charismatic actors: Alain Delon, whom many still consider the most beautiful actor of the twentieth century. At the heyday of his career, Delon became the icon of European cinema, an international sex symbol, and the epitome of a new cosmopolitan style of masculinity.

Institutionalizing Normality: Disability, Productivity, And Higher Education, Ashley Dirzis Apr 2025

Institutionalizing Normality: Disability, Productivity, And Higher Education, Ashley Dirzis

Student Theses

This thesis examines how capitalism and neuronormative domination shape the structures and values of academic institutions, affecting faculty, students, and research subjects alike. By privileging productivity, conformity, and efficiency in the pursuit of income, universities often marginalize those who diverge from normative standards of thinking, behavior, and embodiment, particularly disabled individuals. Drawing on Marta Russell’s Disability and Capitalism and the shaping of disability by capitalist systems, Robert Chapman’s notion of the "Empire of Normality" and Jay Dolmage’s concept of the retrofit from Academic Ableism, this paper analyzes how academia reinforces ableist norms. It explores the realities and barriers that …

The Implementation Of An Educational Program To Enhance Self-Advocacy Skills Among Pots Patients, Rachel Hellman Bsn, Cen Apr 2025

The Implementation Of An Educational Program To Enhance Self-Advocacy Skills Among Pots Patients, Rachel Hellman Bsn, Cen

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a common form of dysautonomia that affects millions of individuals in the United States and internationally. Approximately 50% of POTS cases involve a “trigger” in the form of a viral infection. The incidence of POTS has drastically increased secondary to COVID-19 initial infections and re- infections. Research has shown that patients with POTS have a quality of life similar to patients living with congestive heart failure. Poor provider education and diagnostic delays contribute to poor quality of life and elevated suicide rates.

Objective: This project aims to educate POTS patients so they have …
