Tradition And Transformation: The Changing Role Of Chestnuts In New England Contra Dance, Emilie Carroll
Tradition And Transformation: The Changing Role Of Chestnuts In New England Contra Dance, Emilie Carroll
Inquiry Journal Spring 2025
It is common knowledge that traditional music and dance are integral to many cultures, but we may not think of the traditions that shape our local community, such as the New England contra dance tradition. Contra dance is a form of folk dance brought by European settlers during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and like all living traditions, contra dance continues to change, yet its historical roots remain significant. In my research project, funded by a Research Experience and Apprenticeship Program grant from the Hamel Center for Undergraduate Research, I studied a subset of older tunes called “chestnuts” which are …

Uncovering Artemisia: Turning Rage Into Fame, Sophie Longo
Undergraduate Theses in Art History
During the fifteenth through seventeenth centuries in Italy - more commonly known as the Italian Renaissance and early Baroque periods - masters like Titian, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Caravaggio made a name for themselves and secured legacies through the widespread popularity and study of their masterpieces. As time progressed, however, more artworks have been found, and more histories, especially by women Baroque artists, have been explored. With the rise of women’s rights movements and social justice campaigns from the mid-20th century on, stories of female artists and figures have further emerged from the woodwork and hold greater precedence in …

In a world increasingly characterized by polarization and division, the need for meaningful dialogue and empathetic engagement is more urgent than ever. This compelling collection of essays, selected from doctoral students of the 2024 Winona State University’s Education Doctoral Program Residency, explores how education can respond to these challenges. The authors critically assess the current state of public discourse and propose ways that schools can serve as spaces for constructive, civil engagement. They examine the broader responsibilities of educators in bridging divides, fostering a culture of empathy, and listening. Through their reflections, these aspiring scholars encourage us to reconsider the …

Mortgage Lending Discrimination: A Barrier In The Land Of Opportunity, Paul Campbell
Mortgage Lending Discrimination: A Barrier In The Land Of Opportunity, Paul Campbell
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
This note discusses the problem of mortgage loan discrimination in America. In January 2021, mortgage rates in America were the lowest in history at 2.65%. Around this time, there was a high demand for housing throughout the country. Yet in 2022, 26% of Black applicants had mortgage applications denied. Mortgage loan discrimination continues to be a barrier for African American homeownership. However, this barrier can be overcome by supporting nonprofit organizations and community banks, creating a new federal agency which provides reparations and guaranteed mortgages, and passing the Fair Access to Financial Services Act.
How The United States Fails Immigrant Youth, Abigail "Abby" Reinhard Greene
How The United States Fails Immigrant Youth, Abigail "Abby" Reinhard Greene
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
Immigrants are some of the most marginalized members of society. Immigrant youth, in particular, endure additional stresses due to their dual status as children and immigrants. Many fled their home country from persecution or entered the U.S. without a parent or legal guardian.
By May 2024, over 120 million individuals were “forcibly displaced worldwide as a result of persecution, conflict, violence or human rights violations.” In 2022, over 152,000 unaccompanied immigrant youths crossed the U.S.-Mexico border. The United States faces several challenges in supporting these immigrant youths, and it currently fails to meet those challenges. ...
This note details how …
Secure 2.0'S Automatic Enrollment Provisions And Their Potentially Detrimental Effect On Undocumented Immigrants, Kelly Maurer
Secure 2.0'S Automatic Enrollment Provisions And Their Potentially Detrimental Effect On Undocumented Immigrants, Kelly Maurer
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
The SECURE 2.0 Act of 2022 significantly expands retirement plan participation through automatic enrollment mandates, a policy aimed at improving financial security for American workers. However, these provisions may create unintended hardships for undocumented immigrant workers, who constitute between 4.4% to 5.4% of the U.S. labor force. This Note examines how automatic enrollment, default contribution rates, and current distribution requirements may create financial and legal hardships for undocumented workers lacking valid Social Security Numbers (SSNs) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs). The analysis explores the uncertain legal status of undocumented workers under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), as …
Beyond Human Discretion: Reconciling Ai Systems With Traditional Legal Frameworks, Daniel Ikem
Beyond Human Discretion: Reconciling Ai Systems With Traditional Legal Frameworks, Daniel Ikem
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
In February 2023, attorneys representing a plaintiff in a personal injury case against Avianca Airlines submitted a legal brief containing multiple citations to nonexistent judicial decisions generated by ChatGPT. When questioned by the court, the attorneys admitted they had relied on research generated by artificial intelligence (AI) without verification, resulting in sanctions and reputational damage. Mata v. Avianca both represents professional negligence by legal professionals and a complex intersection of human and artificial intelligence. Unlike traditional research tools that retrieve existing information, generative AI (GAI) creates novel content that appears authoritative, introducing unique verification challenges that traditional ethical frameworks did …
Enhancing Metacognitive Competencies Through Human-Centered Ai: The Role Of Custom-Trained Intelligent Agents In Workforce Upskilling, James Hutson

Endothelial Dysfunction Promotes Age-Related Reorganization Of Collagen Fibers And Alters Aortic Biomechanics In Mice, Liya Du, Jeffrey Rodgers, Nazli Gharraee, Olivia Gary, Tarek Shazly, John F. Eberth, Susan M. Lessner
Faculty Publications
Endothelial dysfunction, defined as a reduction in the bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO), is a risk factor for the occurrence and progression of various vascular diseases. This study investigates the effect of endothelial dysfunction on age-related changes in aortic extracellular matrix (ECM) microstructure and the relationship between microstructural adaptation and the mechanical response. Here, we used groups of NOS3 knockout (KO), NOS3 heterozygotes (Het), and wild-type (WT) B6 mice (controls) to study changes in hemodynamic parameters, collagen fiber organization, and both active and passive aortic mechanics using biaxial pressure myography over a time course from 1.5 to 12 mo. Outreach & Dna-Based Monitoring Facilitate 3-Fold Reduction In Seafood Mislabeling In Los Angeles Over 10 Years, Demian A. Willette, Kelli Andrade, Ben Fitzpatrick, Kesterlyn Wilson
Biology Faculty Works
Awareness and intervention can reduce fraudulent labeling in seafood. Using a 10-year longitudinal study approach, DNA-based monitoring data reveals a lower sushi mislabeling in Los Angeles restaurants over time. This is in part attributed to implemented recommendations by restaurants of a local academia-industry-government outreach initiative launched in 2018, The Los Angeles Seafood Monitoring Project. We found mislabeling was 3-fold lower among project-partnering restaurants than other restaurants. This difference was statistically significant, illustrating the combination of project partnering and implementation of recommendations was most impactful on reducing mislabeling rates. Lastly, the study period includes the COVID19 global pandemic, which additional monitoring …

Rehabilitation Sciences Department Faculty Articles
Introduction. Orthopedic manual physical therapy (OMPT) is renowned for its positive biophysical and psychosocial effects, making it an important tool in clinical practice. Although OMPT has long been a stable intervention used in developed countries, its adoption has spiked in developing countries, including the Philippines. Despite this progress, no comprehensive study has explored the factors that may hinder or enable Filipino physical therapists (PTs) from utilizing OMPT into their daily clinical practice. The aim of this study was to conduct a thorough behavioral analysis to determine Filipino PTs' capabilities, opportunities, and motivations for using orthopedic manual therapy in their …
Enhancing Urban Water Drainage In Avenida Da Liberdade: Evaluating Green Spaces And Sustainable Infrastructure In Lisbon’S Master Drainage Plan, Eva Asfahani
Portugal: Sustainability and Environmental Justice
Lisbon’s Plano Geral de Drenagem de Lisboa (PGDL) represents a major step toward modernizing the city’s drainage system in response to growing environmental pressures. This paper explores how sustainable infrastructure, particularly nature-based solutions such as Green-Blue Infrastructure, are incorporated into the PGDL, with a focus on the Avenida da Liberdade area. Through a combination of literature review, fieldwork, and interviews with municipal officials, the research evaluates the environmental, economic, and social benefits of integrating decentralized, sustainable drainage systems alongside traditional gray infrastructure. Findings show that while the PGDL makes important progress in reducing flood risk and improving water quality, spatial …

An unconventional form of tourism, the Camino de Santiago is a religious pilgrimage that takes tourists through diverse terrains across both rural and urban areas of Spain and Portugal, culminating at the Santiago de Compostela Archcathedral Basilica in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. With growing popularity in recent years, pilgrims’ environmental footprint and their impact on local communities have become more noticeable (Whitaker, 2025). The objective of this paper is to investigate the environmental consciousness of contemporary pilgrims and how they perceive their impact on local communities. The research specifically focuses on the perspectives of pilgrims on the Portuguese Coastal Route …

Meals That Matter: Funding Minnesota's Senior Nutrition Programs To Promote Wellbeing As We Age, Kelly Brancamp, Susan Panciera, Amanda Rieke, Abi Santiago
Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs
Senior nutrition programs meet the essential needs of adults aged 60 and over, especially those who are low-income, live in rural areas, have limited English proficiency and are at risk of requiring higher levels of care without these services. In many greater Minnesota counties, over 25% of the population is aged 65 or older. Rural communities are aging more rapidly and face higher rates of food insecurity compared to urban and suburban areas.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the US Surgeon General issued a 2023 advisory report highlighting the critical issue of social isolation and loneliness. Senior nutrition programs …

No Free Labor: Pushing For The Eradication Of Unpaid Internships In Minnesota, Morgan Bruhn, Kaylee Cincoski, Jenna Host, Hollie Mclaughlin
Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs
The continued lack of paid internships exploits social work students and directly undermines the core values of the profession. To address this injustice, the NASW-MN Chapter’s 2025 legislative priorities call for the creation and funding of paid social work internships, ensuring education is not only affordable and accessible but also ethically grounded and free from exploitation. Equitable compensation is not optional, it is an ethical and economic imperative essential to building a more inclusive and just professional workforce. Minnesota House File 2914 provides a crucial pathway to achieve this goal through a targeted scholarship program.
