Language Program Models For Recently Arrived English Learners, Sarah E. Schulz Apr 2025

Language Program Models For Recently Arrived English Learners, Sarah E. Schulz

Graduate Teacher Education

Many schools in the United States have been responding to the growing number of Recently Arrived English Learners (RAELs) and the academic needs when adjusting to mainstream classrooms. These students can have long periods of interrupted schooling, traumatic immigration experiences, and unique acculturation processes that require specific needs apart from other English Language Learners (Sugarman, 2023). This literature review examined the ways K-12 schools can support RAELs academically and socially-emotionally during the transition to becoming accustomed to the educational models used in the United States of America by analyzing current research on the effectiveness of various English Language Program Models. …

Factors Of Social And Emotional Development Which Positively Impact Language Acquisition In Early Childhood To Support Well-Being And Academic Development, Amanda L. Sauer

Graduate Teacher Education

Students who speak a first language other than English often enter classrooms with educators who may not know how to support second language (L2) development. Even more so, there is little research about L2 development and the social and emotional factors that foster language growth for English language learners (ELL) as it pertains to early childhood. Through quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method studies, research was synthesized to give early childhood educators the necessary insight into factors that foster positive social and emotional growth for these dual language learners’ (DLL) L2 acquisition. Studies suggested that young students benefited from play-based learning environments …

After The Catastrophe: Rwanda's Transformation, Zhijun He Apr 2025

After The Catastrophe: Rwanda's Transformation, Zhijun He

International Studies Honors Projects

Standard development theory holds that recovery requires institutions first: courts, fiscal systems, the rule of law. Rwanda in 1994 had none—and rebuilt a state. The state must extract to build capacity, deliver to build legitimacy; when both collapse simultaneously, no entry point remains. Somalia's three-decade failure confirms the trap. Rwanda broke it.

This thesis argues that Rwanda's trajectory is not an exception to the good governance consensus but a refutation of it. Through analytical synthesis of the existing scholarship on four post-genocide institutional mechanisms— gacaca community courts, umuganda collective labor, imihigo performance contracts, and ingando political education camps—the thesis develops …

Disparities In Resource Allocation For Minority Students, Van Parker Apr 2025

Disparities In Resource Allocation For Minority Students, Van Parker

Masters Projects

Persistent disparities in educational outcomes for minority students in the United States are deeply rooted in historical injustices and systemic racism, particularly when it comes to resource allocation. This project focused on public school funding, reliant on local property taxes, creates structural imbalances that benefit affluent, predominantly white districts while underfunding minority schools. Additionally, these schools often face a shortage of certified, experienced teachers due to lower salaries, inadequate support, and challenging working conditions. Students in these under-resourced settings also lack access to advanced coursework, STEM programs, and essential learning materials, further widening the achievement gap. The product focuses on the …

Image Analysis Of Pupal Sex Ratio In Honey Bee Hives, Anna Tattelman, Grace O’Brien

Biology Student Scholarship

Anna Tattelman ’27, Environmental Biology major

Grace O’Brien ’26, Biology major

Faculty mentor: Dr. Rachael Bonoan, Biology

Our project analyzes honey bee hive development over time. We are specifically looking at drone comb production over a four-week period with varying hive conditions and treatments. It has become more difficult to manage bee hives due to parasitic mites, such as Varroa Destructor. A common method beekeepers use to protect honey bees against these threats is adding drone comb to attract then remove mites. Through drone comb analysis we can determine how honey bees are responding to the treatments by evaluating their …

Deaf-Centric Expression Of Biblical Language And Themes, Grace M. Tang Apr 2025

Deaf-Centric Expression Of Biblical Language And Themes, Grace M. Tang

Senior Honors Theses

Christianity contains complicated language and concepts that many individuals can struggle to express in American Sign Language (ASL) in ways that resonate with the Deaf community. Accessibility for the Deaf extends far beyond the translation of words into signs, requiring recontextualization to fit a Deaf lens and adaptation of communication methods to match the oral tradition and Deaf culture. This qualitative study evaluates how the hearing-centered language and themes of the Bible can be effectively portrayed to Deaf audiences through comprehensive interviews with three Deaf Christian pastors and three hearing Christian interpreters. This research found that Deaf churches allow for …

Find The Rule For Constructing The Row Elements For Each Row And Insert The Missing Elements Instead Of The “?” Signs, Vasiliy Znamenskiy

Open Educational Resources

This document presents a set of sequences with missing elements, each governed by a unique underlying rule. The task involves identifying the rule that dictates the arrangement of elements within each sequence and determining the missing items indicated by question marks ("?"). The sequences vary widely in character, including numerical progressions (such as arithmetic and geometric sequences, squares, and factorials), alphabetical series, symbolic arrangements (days of the week, Greek letters, planetary symbols), and numeric sequences referencing known mathematical constructs (e.g., prime numbers, Fibonacci series, angles). Completing these sequences requires interdisciplinary analytical skills, encompassing mathematical reasoning, linguistic patterns, general knowledge of …

“En Clave” Tania León And Roberto Sierra: Autochthonous Music Of Cuba And Puerto Rico, Contemporary Music Composition And The ‘Puente’ In Between, Omar A. Ramirez

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This document is in two parts. The first examines selected works of Latin-American composers Tania León and Roberto Sierra. Both composers cite their cultural background as a force that shapes their artistic expression. Many of their works are titled in Spanish, with compositions referencing their homelands in subject and narrative, and incorporate the autochthonous music(s) of Cuba and Puerto Rico. Elements of these afrodiasporic musical traditions can be found in their works: Alegre, Batá, Stride, (León), Loiza, and Concerto for Viola (Sierra), each examined here.

Autochthonous musical elements are highlighted in score excerpts and described using …

Socially Responsible Investing: The Role Of Investors' Demographics And Educational Background Towards Investments, Amy Maalouf Apr 2025

Socially Responsible Investing: The Role Of Investors' Demographics And Educational Background Towards Investments, Amy Maalouf

Honors Projects in Finance

Socially responsible investing is a crucial strategy to adopt as it fosters positive outcomes for the environment and society. Sustainability is gaining traction in society because investors are creating a beneficial impact in the community. They accomplish this by focusing on factors that involve environmental sustainability, diversity, and human rights. This study employs a survey approach to obtain both quantitative and qualitative data about the educational background and demographics of investors in the stock market. The empirical analysis will incorporate a multivariate regression that attempts to measure the impact of various demographics on one's "socially responsible investing score." A regression …

Power Dressing Or Overdressing? The Effect Of Self And Managerial Attire On Employee Perceptions, Conor Kincaid

Honors Projects in Management

This study investigates how dress styles influence employees' self-perceptions when they and their managers wear different attire in corporate environments. We surveyed employees across various industries and company sizes, showing them images of individuals in casual, smart casual, business casual, and business formal attire. Based on Peluchette and Karl's (2007) validated instrument, participants rated sixteen self-perception attributes across six dimensions: authoritativeness, competence, productivity, trustworthiness, friendliness, and creativity, with strong reliability coefficients ranging from .82 to .93. Our findings revealed that employees perceive themselves as significantly more authoritative (p = 0.0002) and competent (p = 0.033) when wearing business formal attire, …

The data analysis conducted will help determine the overall tournament winner. A machine learning model is implemented using college basketball metrics from previous years to determine the overall winner of this prestigious tournament in 2025. The model was able to pick up the winner in 2024. The result also finds that the most important features in determining the winner of the tournament are shooting guard height, small …

Analyzing The Declining Role Of Starting Pitchers In Mlb, Andrew Sferratore Apr 2025

Analyzing The Declining Role Of Starting Pitchers In Mlb, Andrew Sferratore

Honors Projects in Information Systems and Analytics

In Major League Baseball (MLB) , the use of starting pitchers has faced major scrutiny. This study aims to discuss the declining role of starting pitchers in MLB and analyze how this affects team success during the regular season. Recent literature and statistics reveal that starting pitchers are throwing fewer innings and have lower pitch counts over the last two decades than in previous years. Attributing to this declining role are extreme spikes in the number of Tommy John (UCLR) surgeries, newly added rule changes, and the introduction of new philosophical approaches. Data from the 2024 regular season regarding starting …

Mind The Gap: Understanding Why Gen Z’S Sustainability Values Do Not Align With Fashion Purchasing Behavior. Exploring The Factors That Contribute To Values-Behavior Gap, Aileen Charron

Honors Projects in Mathematics and Economics

This thesis investigates the values-behavior gap that exists among Gen Z consumers, specifically investigating why sustainability values often do not translate into sustainable fashion purchasing. Through a multidisciplinary literature review highlighting key economic, marketing, psychological, and anthropological theories of consumer demand, this study identifies the complex motivations behind Gen Z’s fashion choices. A survey distributed to Gen Z respondents (n = 42) measured sustainability values, fashion purchasing habits, and influences across the four different theoretical domains of demand. Respondents were categorized into four subcategories of purchaser based on their sustainability values and consumption behaviors. Analyses had a particular focus on …

Sports Economics And Regional Prosperity: Exploring The Economic Impacts Of Success Of “Big Four” Teams, Gavin Todtenkopf Apr 2025

Sports Economics And Regional Prosperity: Exploring The Economic Impacts Of Success Of “Big Four” Teams, Gavin Todtenkopf

Honors Projects in Mathematics and Economics

Recent years have seen massive increases in government spending on sports stadiums and overall sports investments. The justification for this trend is that sports create positive externalities that can boost the overall economy of a region that the team resides in. However, economists cannot come to a unified conclusion about whether a single team can positively impact economic growth. Therefore, this study looks at the effects of a region's largest sports teams, collectively known as the “Big 4.” This includes teams in the MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL. An econometric economic model is used to estimate the relationship between economic …

These years were marked by five different prime ministers, numerous scandals, and historic votes that have significantly altered the UK’s path and continue to have lasting consequences today. This piece will analyze the Conservative government's rule from 2010 to 2024, providing an in-depth examination of its actions and their impact on the party's declining popularity. The second part will …

Transforming Ivan The Terrible: History, Memory Politics, And Monuments In Putin’S Russia, Lena Lapierre

Bates College Journal of Political Studies

Like Joseph Stalin before him, Vladimir Putin has brought Ivan the Terrible back from oblivion and has made the memorialization of one of the country’s most infamous and brutal rulers a centerpiece of the Kremlin's contemporary propaganda toolkit. Analyzing a wide spectrum of Russian language sources such as the political speeches, historical lectures, protest posters, and Russian social media posts, this paper explores the various factors motivating the Putin regime’s revitalization of Ivan the Terrible and outlines how ordinary Russians have responded to the politicized whitewashing of their history. In 2016, with much fanfare, the provincial city of Orel erected …
