Few-Shot Learning On Graphs: From Meta-Learning To Llm-Empowered Pre-Training And Beyond, Yuan Fang, Yuxia Wu, Xingtong Yu, Shirui Pan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Graph representation learning has become central to many graph-based tasks, driving advancements in various domains such as web search, recommendation systems, and social network analysis. Traditionally, these methods rely on end-to-end supervised learning paradigms that require abundant labeled data, which can be costly and difficult to obtain. To address this limitation, few-shot learning on graphs has emerged as a promising approach, allowing models to generalize with minimal supervision and overcome data scarcity in real-world applications. This tutorial offers an in-depth exploration of recent advancements in few-shot learning for graphs, providing a comparative analysis of state-of-the-art methods and identifying future research …

Eduqate: Generating Adaptive Curricula Through Rmabs In Education Settings, Sidney Tio, Dexun Li, Pradeep Varakantham

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

There has been significant interest in the development of personalized and adaptive educational tools that cater to a student's individual learning progress. A crucial aspect in developing such tools is in exploring how mastery can be achieved across a diverse yet related range of content in an efficient manner. While Reinforcement Learning and Multi-armed Bandits have shown promise in educational settings, existing works often assume the independence of learning content, neglecting the prevalent interdependencies between such content. In response, we introduce Education Network Restless Multi-armed Bandits (EdNetRMABs), utilizing a network to represent the relationships between interdependent arms. Subsequently, we propose …

Ic Writing Center Expansion Proposal, Norah Al-Hallaj, Olivia Beben, Faadil Syed, Guillermo Ordonez

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

The Writing Center is an incredible asset to Loyola students, aiding with a wide range of writing issues across many subjects. However, its current layout falls short of optimizing student and tutor success. Its main problem is the consistent impact of outside noise-disrupting sessions. We propose to fill the gaps between the ceiling and the walls in the rooms used by the Writing Center. By making this practical change, the Writing Center can better support its students and tutors, improving the overall satisfaction of the program in the future.

Caregivers’ Verbal And Nonverbal Input On Spanish-English Bilingual Children’S Word Learning, Nikki Tsolakidis, Anmol Patel Apr 2025

Caregivers’ Verbal And Nonverbal Input On Spanish-English Bilingual Children’S Word Learning, Nikki Tsolakidis, Anmol Patel

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

We examined the relation of caregivers’ verbal and nonverbal input on bilingual children’s word learning. 45 caregiver-child dyads (Female=17) were video-recorded (75-minutes). At child-age 18-months (M=18.68; SD=1.12), caregivers’ non-verbal input was coded as communicative hand/head movements (gestures). Caregivers’ verbal input was words used and verbal responses to children’s gestures. At child-age 24-months (M=36.90; SD=0.66), word learning was calculated as words produced (video-recorded, caregiver report). Analyses showed caregivers’ nonverbal input was related to children’s Spanish words (p < 0.05). On-going analyses examine the relation of caregivers’ verbal input on children’s words.

Nourish Chicago: Cultivating Health And Sustainability In Low-Income Communities Through Accessible Education And Engaging Activities, Audrey Kho

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

“Nourish Chicago: Cultivating Health and Sustainability in Low-Income Communities through Accessible Education and Engaging Activities” seeks to improve nutritional literacy and sustainable food choices by educating communities on natural food dyes as healthier alternatives to artificial colorants. Participants learn about the chemical characteristics, health advantages, and culinary uses of plant-based pigments like turmeric, hibiscus, beetroot, and butterfly pea flower through engaging food science workshops and demonstrations. Practical tests demonstrate food preparation, color stability, and pH sensitivity, enabling people to make educated nutritional decisions. This project promotes lifelong scientific literacy and improved eating habits by increasing awareness of food color substitutes.

Our group picked Henry Seidel Canby and William Rose Benet from among Amy Lowell’s correspondents and produced an edition of their letters to Amy Lowell. We researched and wrote an introduction to the magazine and its editors, situating them within modernism and the New Poetry movement. We then transcribed 10 letters and created a presentation based on our group work. Subjects were drawn from course readings and discussion, and included William Rose Benet and Henry Seidel Canby (The Saturday Review/Century Magazine).

Symposium of Student Scholars

Stories about reading in schools and what they can tell educators about reading is based on the practices of personal reading lives of teachers. This project is based on their instructional practices, focusing on how their reading habits influence the reading journey and experience for their students. By looking into the past and present lives of educators through portraiture methodology (Lawrence-Lightfoot, 1997), the study explores how personal reading habits such as prevalence of reading for enjoyment and the obstacles that come along with it can inform educational approaches in the classroom. By interviewing teachers this research aims to gather data …

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals face a wide range of mental and physical health challenges, which contribute to higher rates of suicide. SGM individuals encounter distress, discrimination, and in some cases, harmful anti-LGBTQIA+ laws and policies that contribute to additional mental and physical health stress. A web-based survey of 1,034 SGM participants in the United States measured the types and frequency of discrimination occurrences and related distress. The survey considers the variety of interactions between individuals and their relationships, while also measuring the community and societal factors that affect health outcomes for SGM individuals.
