Influence Of Neo-Colonial Relationships On The Gender Norms Of The Pacific Islands, Katelynn N. Nicholas
Influence Of Neo-Colonial Relationships On The Gender Norms Of The Pacific Islands, Katelynn N. Nicholas
International and Global Studies Undergraduate Honors Theses
The intersection between domestic violence and formerly colonized countries has long drawn the attention of scholars and researchers. Many of the Pacific Islands are known for their low Human Development Index scores. Because of their treatment of women, they also often have very low Gender Development Index scores. The understanding that there will be no receipts after the exchange of a human being, usually a child, has encouraged British men to seek out sex work in Thailand. Arguably domestic violence and colonization fully overlap in the sexual objectification of ethnic groups in Oceania and the woman there who fall into …
Remembering The Stasi On The Screen: Historical Film Analysis Of The East German Ministry For State Security, William H. Herzfeld
Remembering The Stasi On The Screen: Historical Film Analysis Of The East German Ministry For State Security, William H. Herzfeld
History Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to assess how the history and identity of the Ministerium für Staatssicherheit (Ministry for State Security, Stasi) has been internalized by the German people through film media. Germans endured significant trauma and cultural manipulation at the hands of the Stasi and the Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands (Socialist Unity Party, SED) that is personified in many ways. The trauma that the Stasi inflicted sits heavily on the reflective interpretations of the DDR, complicating retrospection on life in the DDR and its positive elements. The Stasi have come to represent the essential negativity of life in …
The Three Angels’ Messages And The Seventh-Day Sabbath: Antidotes To The 1844 Theological Divide Of Neo-Darwinism, Karl Marx, And Frederick Nietzsche, Ron Reece
Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries
The “Great Disappointment” of October 22, 1844, left a group of believers wondering what did happen in 1844. This seminal time period in world history was also defined by the scientific and philosophical ideas of Charles Darwin, Karl Marx, and Frederick Nietzsche that challenged God’s grace and redemption at (1) creation; (2) Mt. Sinai; and (3) Calvary. The Three Angels’ Messages and the seventh-day Sabbath are Christ’s antidote to awaken humanity from this confused and deceived state of reality. They also address the secular philosophies of Neo-Darwinism, Marx, and Nietzsche. Seventh-day Adventists need to embrace a new understanding of 1844 …

Healthy Sendoffs: The Long-Term Mental Health Effects On Nicu Parents And How Nurses Can Improve Outcomes, Christine Lyford
Senior Honors Theses
Parents who enter the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) undergo numerous stressors on their psychological wellbeing that can leave them with impacts long after discharge. This review was conducted to analyze the severity of long-term mental health deficits in parents and compare various nursing interventions that could decrease the incidence of these deficits. Seven databases were searched within the past seven years and documented in the PRISMA flow chart with twelve articles being identified as meeting the inclusion requirements. These articles found a higher prevalence of adverse mental health outcomes in NICU parents, with a focus on family centered care …

The Value Of An Academic Library As Told By Its Users, Gabbi Anzalone
The Value Of An Academic Library As Told By Its Users, Gabbi Anzalone
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Academic libraries serve many purposes and many users, and no one library is exactly alike. This project seeks to begin pinpointing the value of UNO’s own academic library, Criss Library, through the voices of students, faculty, and staff. These primary users will be the focal point, and their responses will aid in analyzing the common concerns, appreciations, and themes surrounding a library’s value. There will be an analysis and synthesis of insights that is based on both user perspectives of the individuals who have offered responses and broader trends in the perception of academic libraries. It is evident that academic …

Cultural Of Authenticity And Commodification: Analyzing The Aesthetic Waves And Collective Culture In The 2010s And 2020s, Stefanny Leung Yu
Student Theses
The “authentic self” is curated, aestheticized, and most notably, commodified. Digital algorithms, likes, views, and engagement are more than just digital metrics, they are the management of performance. For millions of other users — including the author herself — social media is the locus of personal expression. Most notably, sites like Tumblr, where users in the 2010s posted hazy images or overly filtered graphics along with melancholic song lyrics that match the vibe of the moment, expression was earnest and idealized. Today, social media in the 2020s, new creators like Hannah Neelaman, better known as Ballerina Farm, dress in pastoral …
Exploring User Sentiment On Social Issues Via Neural Network Transfer Learning In Digital Communities, Ananya R. Vangoor
Exploring User Sentiment On Social Issues Via Neural Network Transfer Learning In Digital Communities, Ananya R. Vangoor
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Understanding public sentiment on social issues is crucial for gauging the stance of the general population. Traditionally, surveys have been a common approach for this. However, to capture more candid opinions, social media provides a rich source of unadulterated opinions. By analyzing social media statements, we can gain insights into the perspectives of specific groups. More specifically, we will investigate the attitudes of the public into the relationship between hard work and success in the workplace.
Using a neural network trained on tweets from X, formerly known as Twitter, we can categorize each tweet as either pro-luck or pro-meritocracy. But …

Jacques Hadamard describes a four-stage epistemological process: preparation, incubation, illumination, and verification. Hadamard developed this scheme based upon Henri Poincaré’s reflections on the process that led to his discovery of Fuchsian functions (i.e., automorphic functions) which he described in his wonderful paper La Genese de la Creation Mathematique (Mathematical Discovery in English). Philosopher and theologian Bernard Lonergan builds on the writings of Aquinas to develop his theory of insight which elaborates the transition from incubation to illumination. Insight and illumination provide an analytical lens for transitional moments as students learn ever more abstract mathematical concepts. We offer exemplars of these …
The Imposition Of Constitutional Rights, Alvin Padilla-Babilonia
The Imposition Of Constitutional Rights, Alvin Padilla-Babilonia
Michigan Law Review
One of the central principles of constitutionalism is that citizenship stands for equal rights under the law. According to this ideal, a U.S. citizen living in Puerto Rico or Guam should have the same constitutional rights as a citizen living on the mainland. However, throughout U.S. history, constitutional rights have been neither uniform nor centralized. While constitutional rights held importance, they coexisted with ideals of democratic self-governance and legal pluralism. Today, Supreme Court justices and legal scholars argue that all constitutional rights should apply in the territories. This view upholds citizenship, equal rights, and the rule of law. But the …

Spanish Language Accessibility Within Mississippi Courts, Meredith Dudte
Honors Theses
As the Hispanic population continues to rise in Mississippi, Spanish language access in the public sector is of increasing importance. This thesis will specifically explore Spanish language access in Mississippi courts, identifying strengths and weaknesses and recommending policy solutions based on the results. To gain a better understanding of court interpretation in Mississippi, I interviewed ten Spanish language court interpreters and two court clerks either working in Mississippi courts or courts in similar southern states. Responses highlighted two themes as strengths: the federal court interpreter test and compensation, four themes as weaknesses: compensation, standards, omissions, and dialects, and four themes …

Throughout her career and most notably post-pandemic, the scholar practitioner observed an increase in students giving up when encountering rigorous academic content and assignments. During the research process, concepts of student agency and self-regulation of learning, which were new to the scholar practitioner, came to the forefront of skills her students either lacked or needed to improve upon. Empathy generators were gathered for participants at Context School #1, which led to Student agency and self-regulation of learning becoming the center of the intervention during the design thinking process. The Self-Assessment of Learning, created and modified during the design thinking phases, …

Positive covenants—contractual obligations to do things that touch and concern land—are not recognized as property interests at law or in equity. A positive covenant, including the requirement to maintain or repair a building, only binds the parties that contract to be bound. The obligation is personal to the contracting parties and does not run with the land; future owners are bound only if they agree to be bound. The Supreme Court of Canada confirmed as much in 2020 in a dispute between owners of air space parcels over an obligation to pay parking fees: “Where positive covenants are concerned, the …

Exploring Educator Perceptions Regarding Parental Involvement In Inner-City Alternative Schools And Programs For Students With Behavior Challenges: A Qualitative Case Study, Marcia Nicole Waller
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This qualitative case study explored educators' perceptions of parental involvement in an alternative school and state-run Georgia Network for Educational and Therapeutic Support (GNETS) behavior program for students with behavioral challenges in Central Georgia. The problem identified in this qualitative case study was that alternative school students have unique learning and behavioral needs that differ significantly from typically developing peers who attend regular schools requiring a more focused level of communication between parents, teachers, and administrators. The central research question was: What are the perceptions of alternative school or behavior program educators regarding parental involvement in their school setting alternative …

Linking Research To Action To Address Unintended Pregnancy In Refugee Settings In Ethiopia, Baobab Research Programme Consortium
Humanitarian Task Force
Humanitarian crises expose women and girls to the risk of unintended pregnancy due to disruptions in access to and provision of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. Evidence available to support and shape improved family planning programming in refugee settings is sparse, and little is known about how to effectively deliver such programming to the most vulnerable, including women and girls. The Baobab Research Programme Consortium (RPC) is exploring how access to SRHR services can be expanded using existing, low-cost approaches, and how such approaches be communicated and scaled up in refugee settings. We propose harnessing existing food distribution and …
Influence Of The Solicitors General On The Supreme Court: 2011-2023, Maxwell Tobin
Influence Of The Solicitors General On The Supreme Court: 2011-2023, Maxwell Tobin
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
This project looks at the success rate of the OSG and how the data indicates that the government-more specifically between the executive and judicial- is not getting along. In doing so, this scholarship uses 337 Supreme Court cases where the OSG filed on these cases as an amicus brief. This project aims to fill the research gap since 2014. I argue the salience of this research is in 2020-2022 where SCOTUS has 3 new conservative members and the President during this time was leaning more progressive (even more than Obama). All of this works to explain the low success rate …

A Comparison Of Natural And Synthesized Speech In A Case Of Primary Progressive Apraxia Of Speech, Kaitlyn S. Tegethoff
A Comparison Of Natural And Synthesized Speech In A Case Of Primary Progressive Apraxia Of Speech, Kaitlyn S. Tegethoff
Honors Thesis
Primary Progressive Apraxia of Speech (PPAoS) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by deficits in motor planning abilities for speech. Individuals with PPAoS experience phonetic and prosodic differences in their speech, affecting intelligibility, naturalness, speaking rate, and fluency. When a person’s speech is disordered, communication breakdowns may occur. Some individuals with disordered speech choose to use a text-to-speech program that synthesizes speech to improve communication. The differences between natural speech and synthesized speech have seldom been studied in relation to PPAoS.
This study focused on the differences in intelligibility, naturalness, and listener workload between natural and synthesized speech. To gather information …
