A Different Way To Hear: The Role Of Children’S Literature In Promoting Asl And Deaf Awareness, Joslyn Harrington
A Different Way To Hear: The Role Of Children’S Literature In Promoting Asl And Deaf Awareness, Joslyn Harrington
Honors Projects
A Different Way to Hear is a 32-page children’s storybook project designed to promote early exposure to American Sign Language (ASL) and foster cultural awareness of Deaf identity. The story follows a hearing child who, through friendship with a Deaf peer, learns to experience the world through senses beyond sound. Inspired by research on ASL acquisition, Deaf Studies, and inclusive education practices, the book naturally integrates ASL into the narrative and illustrations to model visual communication strategies for young readers. This project responds to a lack of children’s literature that authentically portrays Deaf characters outside of deficit-based narratives. Through careful …

The social media platforms have been generating an enormous amount of data for every second. Twitter, in practice by the individuals is producing more than six hundred tweets in each second. While freely posting opinions and expressions by users, it is very difficult to confine the hate speech shared against any individual, religion or any ethnic group. Consequently, the persons targeted by such hateful content get frustrated. In this regard the different approaches have been solving this serious problem but, sometimes unable to achieve satisfactory results. Therefore, we propose different Machine Learning models to classify given data in two categories, …

Policy Project Optimizing Post-Discharge Process: Creating A Policy For Improved Efficiency, Deniece S. Parkinson
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
The immediate period following hospital discharge is critical for ensuring continuity of care and reducing adverse outcomes. However, the current post-discharge processes utilized in community care could be more effective. The fragmented approach involves multiple individuals, often leading to patient confusion, missed visits, and inefficient communication. These issues contribute to high rehospitalization rates, frequent emergency room visits, and increased healthcare costs. This project proposes a streamlined post-discharge policy managed by a centralized team of one provider and a Nurse Care Manager. The policy aims to refine the processes currently used in each market into a consolidated, well-defined care model to …
Quality Improvement Project Enhancing Patient Care In Nurse Practitioner Private Practices: A Train-The-Trainer Approach To Implementing Evidence-Based Chronic Mental Disease Management Interventions, Chioma Waters
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Chronic mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are frequently treated by nurse practitioners (NPs) in outpatient private practices. Despite the evidence supporting Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as a first-line intervention, its utilization remains limited in NP settings, often due to lack of training and confidence. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to evaluate whether a structured train-the-trainer program could improve NP confidence in applying CBT in practice. Guided by the Iowa Model and Kotter’s 8-Step Change Model, this quality improvement project utilized a quasi-experimental, pre-post survey design to assess …

Sesame Street: From Puppets To Pixels, Blaise C. Wingold
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Sesame Street has been around since 1969 and is still creating new episodes. Joan Ganz Cooney created the program in an attempt to use television to educate and entertain children simultaneously. The show set out goals to create smarter, kinder, and stronger kids. It uniquely featured a diverse cast and was targeted towards disadvantaged youth. However, the world has changed a lot since 1969. In this research, I use a qualitative content analysis to determine how exactly the show has evolved and adapted to target today’s children versus the children in 1969. Additionally, the paper hypothesizes reasons why the show …
Remaking Rulemaking: Lessons From The History Of Federal Rule Of Civil Procedure 54(B), Brad Baranowski, Emery G. Lee Iii
Remaking Rulemaking: Lessons From The History Of Federal Rule Of Civil Procedure 54(B), Brad Baranowski, Emery G. Lee Iii
Cleveland State Law Review
This Article uses the lost history of Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 54(b) to provide a framework for rulemaking at the busy intersection of complex litigation and appellate finality. The drafters of the original civil rules spent more time thinking through how to efficiently combine claims and parties in civil actions—a promised benefit of the proposed law-equity merger—than about how combined claims should be dis-assembled. This failure would haunt the original Advisory Committee on Civil Rules for years. Nowhere was this more evident than in the first decades of Rule 54(b)’s existence.
Promulgated in 1938, Rule 54(b) was designed to …

Colleges of health, human sciences, and education are often administratively organized to include a diverse array of human sciences departments that share roots in social justice and a commitment to advancing equity and inclusion. Despite espoused commitments to equity and inclusion, they frequently struggle to achieve the changes necessary for advancing equity, and inclusion principles across policies, practices, procedures, and units. We implemented and evaluated a 7-day, total immersion, 56-h, educational program entitled the “Social Justice Institute” (SJI) for two cohorts of faculty, staff, and administrators to develop self-efficacy to intervene in systemic oppression in their academic units. SJI delivered …
Effective Elementary Vocabulary Instructional Strategies, Staci A. Brown
Effective Elementary Vocabulary Instructional Strategies, Staci A. Brown
Masters Projects
Vocabulary knowledge upon entering school is a known predictor of literacy success (Moody et al., 2018; NPR, 2000). However, students enter school with various levels of vocabulary knowledge, creating gaps in literacy skills. Teachers must be equipped with the most efficient and effective vocabulary instructional strategies to compensate for these deficits in vocabulary and help all students become successful readers (Moody et al., 2018). This project seeks to research the most successful methods of structuring and implementing vocabulary instruction and provide this knowledge to kindergarten and second-grade teachers through professional development (PD). The PD will consist of several workshops introducing …

Matching Student-Debt Payments With Retirement Contributions Has High Appeal For Low-Wage Workers: Implications For Secure 2.0, Stephen Roll, Mathieu Despard, Guangli Zhang
Center for Social Development Research
Whether to prioritize paying down student debt now or saving for future retirement is a difficult choice, especially for low-wage workers. The SECURE 2.0 Act of 2022 allows employers to match employees’ qualified student-debt payments with contributions into their retirement plans, essentially allowing the employee to save and invest while paying down debt. This research brief draws upon data from the Workforce Economic Inclusion and Mobility (WEIM) survey of a nationally representative sample of vulnerable workers in the United States to examine how such student-loan matching programs affect the retirement savings behaviors of how low-wage workers and how offering these …

Decreasing Extubation Times Using Adaptive Support Ventilation: A Scoping Review, Daphne Thomas, Cole Vest, Luke Wilson, Shannon Witcher, Bobby Bellflower Dnsc, Nnp-Bc, Faanp
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Purpose/Background:This scoping review explores the effectiveness of adaptive support ventilation (ASV) compared to conventional ventilation modes in reducing postoperative extubation times in adults undergoing general anesthesia with ventilatory support. Ventilator weaning is a critical determinant of recovery and outcomes in intensive care settings. ASV, a closed-loop ventilation mode, automatically adjusts ventilator parameters based on patient-specific respiratory mechanics and demand to optimize the weaning process. Although promising, evidence regarding ASV’s effectiveness remains inconsistent across different patient populations and surgical contexts.
Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted from August 2023 to December 2024 across PubMed, CINAHL, Medline, JAMA, and Google …

credit. Analyses drawn upon data from the Workforce Economic Inclusion and Mobility Survey, a survey experiment testing the appeal of employer-sponsored emergency savings accounts. The findings indicate that interest in employer-sponsored emergency savings programs is generally high and that, for low-wage workers, offers of matching contributions are more salient than automatic contributions.

Purpose/Background
Robust adolescent contraceptive counseling requires deep understanding of the specific context in which adolescents are receiving reproductive health care. As teen pregnancy rates rise, particularly in places across the Deep South, providers must find ways to engage their adolescent patients about their sexual and reproductive health. Professional organizations like the American College of Obstetricians and Gyencologists and the American Academy of Pediatrics both offirm the need for robust contraceptive counseling for adolescents. The purpose of this is to ascertain the impact of utilizing shared-decision making aids during contraceptive counseling on patient satisfaction in adolescent populations.

Quality Improvement Project Provider Burnout Related To Patient Satisfaction, Sherita Lee
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Provider burnout is a critical issue in healthcare, often intensified by increasing demands to meet patient satisfaction benchmarks. This quality improvement project aimed to examine whether a structured stress reduction program could reduce provider burnout and positively influence patient satisfaction scores in a small outpatient clinic. Guided by the PICOT question—In the clinic setting (P), does the implementation of a stress reduction program for providers (I), compared to no intervention (C), lead to improved patient satisfaction scores (O) over a six-week period (T)? —the project used a pre- and post-intervention design. The intervention included mandatory provider breaks, communication training, and …

Enhancing Simulation Debriefing In Nursing Education: A Quality Improvement Project, Rebecca Ray
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
This quality improvement (QI) project is of utmost importance as it aims to significantly enhance the debriefing process after simulations in an Associate Registered Nursing Program. The project is designed to equip nursing instructors with a comprehensive guide to facilitate debriefing after simulations, thereby improving student learning outcomes, fostering reflection, and enhancing clinical practice. The lack of consistent and practical guidance during the debriefing process after simulation exercises has been identified as a critical challenge in the nursing program. Without proper guidance, the debriefing process may not achieve its intended outcomes, underscoring the necessity of this project. The intervention at …

Quality Improvement Project Empowering Outpatient Providers: A Training Initiative On Social Determinants Of Health, Shannon Wrenn
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Healthcare providers play a critical role in assessing social determinants of health (SDOH), yet many lack the knowledge and confidence to effectively address these factors during patient encounters. Research indicates that SDOH contribute to approximately 80% of health outcomes, yet only 41% of providers feel confident in discussing them with patients. This quality improvement project aimed to improve provider knowledge and confidence about SDOH as measured by pre- and post-education assessments. The SDOH targeted training took place at an outpatient interventional nephrology practice in Memphis, Tennessee. A quasi-experimental, one-group pretest-posttest design was used. Ten clinical staff members participated in an …

Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Faculty Papers
INTRODUCTION: Acute esophageal necrosis, or black esophagus, is a rare clinical phenomenon typically seen in older men after an acute triggering event. It may present with dysphagia due to stricturing or dysmotility, a complication of severe esophageal inflammation.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we describe a case of a woman with several cardiovascular risk factors who developed black esophagus following diverticular-related hemorrhagic shock and presented with chest pain followed by dysphagia and food impaction likely as a result of mucosal sloughing and altered esophageal motility. The diagnosis was confirmed endoscopically and pathology revealed coagulative necrosis due to ischemia.
DISCUSSION: Acute esophageal necrosis …

The Effect Of Using Pelvic Floor Exercises Administered Through A Smartphone Application In Postpartum Women With Pelvic Floor Dysfunction, Elizabeth A. Russell
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) affects 50% of postpartum women and can lead to pelvic pain, stress urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, or sexual dysfunction (Grimes, 2023). The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to determine if the implementation of pelvic floor exercise (PFE) as guided by a smartphone application, to improve adherence and technique of exercises, will improve PFD symptoms and quality of life (QOL). At an OBGYN clinic in northern Indiana, all women who presented for their 6-week postpartum appointment were screened for PFD with the Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory (PFDI-20) and QOL with the Pelvic …
Cultivating Legal Protection: Replacing Wine Labeling Regulations With Regional Certification Marks, David Corasaniti
Cultivating Legal Protection: Replacing Wine Labeling Regulations With Regional Certification Marks, David Corasaniti
Washington and Lee Law Review Online
While wine labeling in the United States is currently governed by a complex regulatory framework administered by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (“TTB”), intellectual property (“IP”) rights for wine producing regions could serve this core function of protecting consumers better and more efficiently. Regulating wine labeling through IP would more closely mirror the system used by the European Union, which recognizes Geographical Indications, such as Champagne, Rioja, and Bordeaux, as a unique form of IP. By deregulating American wine labeling, and encouraging wine producing regions to assert their IP rights in the form of collectively held certification …

Men’S Preconception Health: Impact On Pregnancy And Awareness Strategies., Kara I. Carr
Honors Capstones
Men’s preconception health plays a critical role in pregnancy outcomes, but it continues to be overlooked in healthcare education. While women are routinely counseled by OBGYN providers on how nutrition, lifestyle, and chronic conditions can affect fertility, men often receive little to no guidance from their primary care providers. This project uses a literature review to look deeper into how limited awareness and involvement in men’s preconception health may impact pregnancy and infant health outcomes. The gap is linked to cultural norms, healthcare practices, and the lack of clear resources for men. This research aims to develop strategies that promote …
The Unwanted Child: A Historical Note, Lawrence M. Friedman
The Unwanted Child: A Historical Note, Lawrence M. Friedman
Cleveland State Law Review
Historically, the illegitimate child was unwanted: was "filius nullius," or nobody's child—a child without rights, and socially stigmatized. In many ways, both law and society conspired against these children. But both literature and the living law demonstrated that, in the 19th century, there were pockets of sympathy and understanding for these children. And the status of the illegitimate child changed over the years: both with regard to inheritance rights, and to position in society. Adoption law also made the unwanted, wanted—at least by the adopting parents. The marital status of parents became legally and socially more and more irrelevant over …

Courting Oblivion Part Ii: How To Revive American Reconstruction By Feigning Forgetfulness, Joshua J. Schroeder
Cleveland State Law Review
This is the second part of the three-part Courting Oblivion series on the legal concept of oblivion, meaning legal forgetfulness, letting go of the past, or forgiveness usually to predicate a second chance, a restart, or even an era of reconstruction. This Article demonstrates how to apply the “right to move on” described in Part I to the law in the United States through acts of oblivion and amnesty. It describes the general uses of acts of oblivion and amnesty to the general framework of government in the United States, leading to the final discussion in Part III about the …
The Chemistry Of Decomposition: The Mechanisms To Decay The Human Body, Lydia J. Buxa
The Chemistry Of Decomposition: The Mechanisms To Decay The Human Body, Lydia J. Buxa
Senior Honors Theses
Taphonomic analysis separates decomposition into four major stages: fresh, early decomposition, advanced decomposition, and skeletonization. It is easy to demarcate the observable changes to the body, but it is far more difficult to know what underlying biochemical processes are occurring. Fresh decomposition begins with algor mortis, livor mortis, and rigor mortis, which sets the stage for the major workforces of decomposition: autolysis and putrefaction. The external signs of decomposition appear in early decomposition, which can be attributed to the breakdown of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids. This also leads to major changes in the moisture levels during advanced decomposition, …

The Impact Of Automated Text Messaging System Education On The Self-Efficacy Of Medical Office Staff, Jim Jorgensen
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Inadequate patient bowel preparation is a leading cause of canceled or repeated colonoscopies, negatively impacting both outcomes and healthcare costs. While automated text messaging systems have improved patient adherence in other clinical areas, they remain underutilized by endoscopy staff due to low self-efficacy. This quality improvement project aimed to evaluate the effect of structured education on the self-efficacy of endoscopy nursing staff in using an automated text messaging system for outpatient colonoscopy preparation at a rural VA Medical Center (VAMC). Guided by Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory and using the Plan-Do-Study-Act model, this project implemented a one-day, hands-on training session with …
Relationship Between Speaking Proficiency And Cultural Identity Of Korean Heritage Language Speakers, Minha Lee
Relationship Between Speaking Proficiency And Cultural Identity Of Korean Heritage Language Speakers, Minha Lee
Theses and Dissertations
Heritage language speakers from immigrant families often navigate between two languages and cultures as they form their personal identities. In this process, some develop their identity through their personal choices and external pressures, while others remain in a state of identity confusion. Although many factors contribute to the formation of their identity, the field of language education has continued to focus on the relationship between language proficiency and identity, assuming language ability could be one of the key influences. This study investigated the relationship between Korean speaking proficiency and cultural identity among Korean heritage language speakers born in the United …
