A New Second Order Approximation For Fractional Derivatives With Applications, Haniffa M.Nasir, Kamel Nafa Apr 2025

A New Second Order Approximation For Fractional Derivatives With Applications, Haniffa M.Nasir, Kamel Nafa

Sultan Qaboos University Journal For Science

We propose a generalized theory to construct higher order Grünwald type approximations for fractional derivatives. We use this generalization to simplify the proofs of orders for existing approximation forms for the fractional derivative. We also construct a set of higher order Grünwald type approximations for fractional derivatives in terms of a general real sequence and its generating function. From this, a second order approximation with shift is shown to be useful in approximating steady state problems and time dependent fractional diffusion problems. Stability and convergence for a Crank-Nicolson type scheme for this second order approximation are analyzed and are supported …

Development Of A Mathematical Model For Simulation Of Macroalgae Farming In The Coastal Areas, Abdolmajid Lababpour Apr 2025

Development Of A Mathematical Model For Simulation Of Macroalgae Farming In The Coastal Areas, Abdolmajid Lababpour

Sultan Qaboos University Journal For Science

A mathematical model consisting of a system of three coupled partial differential equations (PDEs) was proposed to estimate the concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorous and macroalgae biomass in coastal open waters. However, some simplifying assumptions were used in the model to cope with the complexity of real conditions. For the macroalgae biomass, the system works as a batch mode, while input and output were accounted for nitrogen and phosphorous. The MATLAB pdepe feature, applying the finite element method was used in model solving and the simulation of model equations. The program was split into four functions that included the solver and …

Not surprisingly, the findings showed the existence of GM-soy in food products in Saudi. This supports the necessity of developing precise quantitative and qualitative ways for …

Soft Chemistry Routes To New Nanosize Materials, Khaled Melghit Apr 2025

Soft Chemistry Routes To New Nanosize Materials, Khaled Melghit

Sultan Qaboos University Journal For Science

The old classical method for preparing inorganic materials is by the ceramic route or solid state reaction. It consists of mixing the starting materials at an elevated temperature. This method has been used for preparing numerous new materials until today. Three decades ago, the materials science community was aware of soft chemistry synthesis or chimie douce, especially with the emergence of nanotechnology field. Instead of the classical method, which involves high temperature, soft chemistry techniques use lower temperatures. In general, starting materials are dissolved in a liquid phase and different parameters such as pH, temperature and reaction time are adjusted …

Development And Application Of Back-Propagation-Based Artificial Neural Network Models In Solving Engineering, Saleh Mohammed Al-Alawi

Sultan Qaboos University Journal For Science

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are computer software programs that mimic the human brain's ability to classify patterns or to make forecasts or decisions based on past experience. The development of this research area can be attributed to two factors, sufficient computer power to begin practical ANN-based research in the late 1970s and the development of back-propagation in 1986 that enabled ANN models to solve everyday business, scientific, and industrial problems. Since then, significant applications have been implemented in several fields of study, and many useful intelligent applications and systems have been developed. The objective of this paper is to generate …

Antisemitism In Medieval Drama: The Villainization Of Judaism In The Croxton ‘Play Of The Sacrament’ And The York Corpus Christi Play, Amber Leech Apr 2025

Antisemitism In Medieval Drama: The Villainization Of Judaism In The Croxton ‘Play Of The Sacrament’ And The York Corpus Christi Play, Amber Leech

English and Creative Writing Honors Papers

In early Middle England, Jews faced an onslaught of antisemitic violence as they were falsely accused of blood libels and the murdering of young children. This culminated in their expulsion from England in 1290, but although they had no legal standing in the country, antisemitism ran rampant in their absence. In this project, I will examine instances of antisemitism in medieval culture, specifically through its drama. The Croxton ‘Play of the Sacrament’ and The York Corpus Christi Play are two plays that display the antisemitism that permeated England throughout the Middle Ages by perpetuating stereotypes that Jews are violent and …

Evaluation Of Wound Dehiscence Rate Between Total Ankle Replacement (Tar) And Ankle Arthrodesis (Aa): A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Asad Mustafa, Sarah Weisbrodt, Naohiro Shibuya

School of Podiatric Medicine - Student Research

Introduction

Total ankle replacement (TAR) and ankle arthrodesis (AA) are surgical interventions used for patients with degenerative ankle arthritis. Historically, AA has been the standard treatment for ankle arthritis; however, in recent years, TAR has become just as popular, if not more so. The TARVA study, a randomized controlled trial examining the outcomes of each procedure for a population with end-stage osteoarthritis, reports similar results between the two procedures, except that TAR may have a higher incidence of wound dehiscence. TAR typically requires a larger incision than AA, which may influence patient selection for the procedure. However, data from the …

Living And Dying With Rats (Essay), Trent Mcfury Apr 2025

Living And Dying With Rats (Essay), Trent Mcfury

The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)

It is unlikely that a dystopian work would begin with, “Rats have not been seen for centuries, even in Venice.” [...]

Although many species disturb our peace, destroy our crops, and/or are outright dangerous, the eco-existential scaling of a rat (and mice), broonie or pixie-like, makes it a convenient analogical and projective emblem of invasion and subsequent extermination. That which abundantly reproduces, keenly clusters, transforms our bodies, challenges our wits, follows and then remains, travels and then stays, is also a psyche-mirror.

Historical Perspectives On Bloodletting In The Management Of Asthma In Children And Adults, Joudeh B. Freij, Bishara J. Freij

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Background: Current asthma management consists of a combination of drugs with different mechanisms of action. Ancient asthma care, by contrast, focused on loosening the humours using remedies such as drinking animal blood, eating rabbit fat and fox lungs, inhaling or consuming certain herbs and plants, bloodletting (including wet cupping), diet (eating raisins, dried figs, vegetables, barley, capers, bread, cake), steaming, baths, wet compresses, and moderate helpings of wine with dinner. Bloodletting was believed to purge the body of noxious humours that caused human disease and thereby reduce inflammation. Here we address the use of bloodletting in asthma management over the …
