Numerous studies have demonstrated that positive psychology interventions, including brief interventions, can significantly improve well-being outcomes. These findings are particularly important given that many of these interventions are brief and self-administered, making them both accessible and scalable for large populations. However, the efficacy of positive psychology interventions is often constrained by small effect sizes. In light of advancements in generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), this study explored whether integrating AI chatbots into positive psychology interventions could enhance their efficacy compared to traditional self-administered approaches. Study 1 examined the efficacy of a gratitude intervention delivered through Snapchat's My AI, while Study 2 …

Do Birds Of A Nest Flock Together? A Study Of Home Provinces And Migration Paths Among Filipina Domestic Workers In Hong Kong, Tim F. Liao, Yasmin Y. Ortiga
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
There is strong evidence that migration is networked. However, it is unclear whether having the same province of origin can also lead to similar migratory paths. This study investigates the question of whether a shared home province among Filipina migrant domestic workers in Hong Kong is associated with shared or linked migration paths to Hong Kong. Using a unique data source, the 2017 Survey of Migrant Domestic Workers in Hong Kong, we employed sequence analysis to identify which specific provinces exhibit stronger linkages between migratory trajectories among migrants from the same provinces and if so, whether certain provincial characteristics matter. …
Voting For Winners And Losers In A Hybrid Regime: How Thailand's 2023 Election Shaped Voter Opinion, Jacob Ricks, Allen Hicken
Voting For Winners And Losers In A Hybrid Regime: How Thailand's 2023 Election Shaped Voter Opinion, Jacob Ricks, Allen Hicken
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Research in Western Democracies suggests voting has substantive impacts on how one feels about democracy and state institutions. Voting for winners leads to positive feelings while voting for losers has the opposite effect. How, though, do voters interpret electoral results in a system prone to authoritarian intervention? Thailand's 2023 election offers a unique opportunity to examine how voting in a hybrid regime can impact voter opinion. Using a pre- and postelection survey, we demonstrate that, like elections in democracies, an election in a hybrid regime can have a significant impact on voter opinions. When pro-democracy voters win an election in …

Many cities experience urban overheating from climate change and the urban heat island phenomenon. Previous studies demonstrate that parks are a potential nature-based solution to mitigate urban overheating through the ‘Park Cool Island’ (PCI) effect. PCI intensity can be measured through field measurements (FM) or remote sensing. This FM study used a network of meteorological sensors within a park and in its surrounding urban area to ascertain its PCI intensity in Singapore from January to December 2022. Consistently cooler air temperatures were found throughout a 24-h period in the park area, with mean daytime (nighttime) PCI intensity measured ~ 2.21 …
Proving The Matrix: On The Admissibility And Use Of Prior Negotiation Evidence As An Aid To Contractual Interpretation, Daniele Bertolini
Proving The Matrix: On The Admissibility And Use Of Prior Negotiation Evidence As An Aid To Contractual Interpretation, Daniele Bertolini
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This article examines the relevance and admissibility of prior negotiation evidence in contract interpretation. According to a long-established common law rule (“exclusionary rule”), the evidence of pre-contract negotiations is not admissible as an aid to contract interpretation. This study argues that the exclusionary rule is unjustified and should be abandoned. Judges should be allowed to use prior negotiation evidence to support inferences about the existence of the empirical facts constituting the relevant factual matrix, while the use of such evidence should not be allowed to support interpretive inferences about the meaning of the contract language. The distinction between empirical and …

Recurrent Endobronchial Coil Migration Associated With Needle Biopsy Following Pulmonary Artery Pseudoaneurysm Embolization., Michael H Koenig, Mina S Makary, Tejas Sinha, Jeffrey C Horowitz, Nicholas Pastis
Ambulatory and Primary Care Articles
Endobronchial coil migration is a rare complication of pulmonary artery embolization, occurring when coils erode through a vessel into an airway. We describe a patient who underwent embolization of pulmonary artery pseudoaneurysms associated with a lung mass. The unique aspect of this case is the development of recurrent endobronchial coil migration following a CT-guided core needle biopsy and a subsequent endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) of the mass. In both circumstances, the portion of the coil that migrated into the large airways was cut with endoscopic scissors and removed with a flexible bronchoscope. This case highlights that while cutting …

Relationship Between Local Fiscal Effort And High School Graduation Rate, Zachary Michael Haney
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
Education is an investment in human capital, but the cost to provide this public service is significant. Understanding the return on this investment is essential for informed and effective financial decision-making. While previous school finance studies have examined the relationship between funding and various indicators of student achievement and student attainment, most have focused on spending practices rather than the level of investment itself. Although the literature affirms the need for educational resources, further research is required to determine which types of investment most positively affect student outcomes. Therefore, funding must be analyzed prior to budgetary allocation to evaluate its …

Navigating Insulin Access For Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes: Caregivers' Experiences And Challenges, Ella Anderson
Doctoral Dissertations
Between 2012 and 2018, the annual 14% increase in insulin prices made Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) the most expensive chronic health condition, significantly raising out-of-pocket costs for uninsured or underinsured individuals in the United States (Hayes & Farmer, 2020; Willner et al., 2020). This study utilized a qualitative content analysis methodology to explore the challenges and experiences of parents with children diagnosed with T1D with accessing insulin for their child. Five participants from various areas of the United States responded to open-ended questions both in person and via Zoom. The analysis revealed three main themes: pragmatics of managing diabetic care, …

Pelvic exenteration (PE) is a radical surgical approach designed for the curative treatment of advanced pelvic malignancies, requiring en-bloc resection of multiple pelvic organs. While the procedure is radical, it has shown promise in enhancing long-term survival and is now comparable in surgical mortality to elective resections for primary pelvic cancers. Imaging plays a crucial role in preoperative planning, with MRI, CT, and PET/CT being pivotal in assessing the extent of cancer and formulating a surgical roadmap. This paper presents clinical practice guidelines for imaging in the context of PE, developed jointly by ESGAR, SAR, ESUR, and the PelvEx Collaborative. …

Preclinical Development Of Genome Editing To Treat Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy By Exon Skipping, Made Harumi Padmaswari, Shilpi Agrawal, Christopher E. Nelson
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is caused by loss-of-function mutations to the gene encoding dystrophin. Restoring the reading frame of dystrophin by removing internal out-of-frame exons may address symptoms of DMD. Therefore, the principle of exon skipping has been at the center stage in drug development for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) over the past two decades. Antisense oligonucleotides (AONs) have proven effective in modulating splicing sites for exon skipping, resulting in the FDA approval of several drugs using this technique in recent years. However, due to the temporary nature of AON, researchers are actively exploring genome editing as a potential long-term, …

Background: It is not known whether temporal changes in childhood cancer therapy have reduced risk of subsequent malignant neoplasms of the central nervous system (CNS), a frequently fatal late effect of cancer therapy.
Methods: Five-year survivors of primary childhood cancers diagnosed between 1970 and 1999 in the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study with CNS subsequent malignant neoplasms were identified. Cumulative incidence rates and standardized incidence ratios were compared among survivors diagnosed between 1970-1979 (n = 6223), 1980-1989 (n = 9680), and 1990-1999 (n = 8999). Multivariable models assessed risk factors for CNS subsequent malignant neoplasms.
Results: A total of 157 CNS …

The Imposition Of Constitutional Rights, Alvin Padilla-Babilonia
Faculty Publications
One of the central principles of constitutionalism is that citizenship stands for equal rights under the law. According to this ideal, a U.S. citizen living in Puerto Rico or Guam should have the same constitutional rights as a citizen living on the mainland. However, throughout U.S. history, constitutional rights have been neither uniform nor centralized. While constitutional rights held im- portance, they coexisted with ideals of democratic self-governance and legal pluralism. Today, Supreme Court justices and legal scholars argue that all constitutional rights should apply in the territories. This view upholds citizenship, equal rights, and the rule of law. But …

Background
Adherence to study interventions is critical to the conduct of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The relationships between participant characteristics and intervention adherence are understudied in pregnant populations. The purpose of this study was to conduct a secondary analysis of adherence to study capsules in a double-masked, placebo-controlled RCT of a probiotic intervention to reduce antenatal Group B Streptococcus colonization, in relationship to participant characteristics.
Methods
We analyzed the relationship between capsule adherence rates and demographic characteristics among 81 RCT participants. Categorical variables were reported using counts and percentages, and continuous variables were expressed as means along with their standard …
The Drawing Effect: Evaluating Drawing Method And Strategic Implementation On Recall Accuracy, Jacob M. Namias
The Drawing Effect: Evaluating Drawing Method And Strategic Implementation On Recall Accuracy, Jacob M. Namias
Dissertations
Drawing images of to-be-remembered word’s reference often improves memory for the word relative to a control in which the word is written or read silently, a pattern dubbed the drawing effect. Drawing effects have been recorded in a variety of contexts and are generally more beneficial than other deep/elaborative encoding tasks. My dissertation compared recall for words that are drawn by copying a given image versus generating a drawn image without copying, and in study contexts in which the proportion of drawn items is disproportionally skewed. Experiment 1 gauged whether drawing effects differ relative to writing when participants draw an …

Bribery Law: Is Anything Left?, Richard W. Painter
Cardozo Law Review
Part I of this Article discusses the traditional understanding of bribery that existed at common law at the time of the Founding and presumably is embodied in the reference to bribery in the Impeachment Clause of the Constitution. Part I additionally discusses the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution, which prohibits holders of federal office from receiving gifts, offices, and emoluments from foreign governments without consent of Congress. Part II discusses recent judicial developments weakening the traditional notion of bribery. Specifically, Section II.A discusses how the Supreme Court has narrowed the definition of bribery in the federal criminal code. Section II.B …

From Manuscripts To Monopsonies: Revisiting United States V. Bertelsmann Se & Co. Kgaa, Matthew Petrouskie
Cardozo Law Review
United States v. Bertelsmann SE & Co. KGaA is a unique antitrust case that has reframed decades of precedent. In November 2020, Bertelsmann SE & Co. KGaA ("Bertelsmann"), the parent company of PRH, announced its plan to acquire S&S from its parent company, Paramount Global ("Paramount'). This announcement positioned the merged entity ("S&S + PRH") to control a third of the book market, the largest market share held by a publishing house. The following year, the Department of Justice Antitrust Division ("DOJATR") sued to block the merger. In United States v. Bertelsmann SE & Co. KGaA, the DOJATR's case …

Low-level light therapy (LLLT), particularly using light-emitting diode (LED) devices, has been an effective and non-surgical option for skin rejuvenation, treating signs of aging such as wrinkles, collagen loss, and pigmentation. Despite promising clinical outcomes, variability in treatment parameters such as wavelength, power density, fluence, and treatment regimens remains a challenge in optimizing the therapy for optimal results. Recent studies, including a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded, and split-face clinical trial by Lee et al. (2007), have demonstrated significant improvements in wrinkle reduction and skin elasticity using 830 nm and 633 nm LED wavelengths. These findings highlight the importance of wavelength …

Children and young people’s mental health and well-being has seen a dramatic decline. In the UK, this has been exacerbated by service retrenchment associated with austerity, with evidence of increasing health inequalities. Service innovation that is grounded in practice, has ongoing learning, and is co-designed with children and young people is required now. This can provide creative solutions within the local context and contribute to the fledgling evidence base that explores complex mechanisms of impact. This methodological reflection describes a co-design process of a bespoke, group-based ecotherapy programme: from early piloting using appreciative enquiry before COVID-19 by the mental health, …

Precise displacement measurement is essential for engineering, industrial, and scientific purposes. Ultrafast laser techniques are preferred for real-time applications due to their single-shot measurement capability and high resolution. To create a high-performance and cost-effective system with less complexity, capable of achieving real-time measurement with high micrometer spatial resolution, we have used a picosecond pulsed laser at the telecommunication wavelength of 1.5 μm in combination with dispersive interferometry. The instantaneous frequency measurement took place using the time-stretch technique incorporating dispersion compensating fiber induced chirp. Results using a 7-picosecond laser at 1.5 μm with a 10 MHz repetition rate are presented. Frequency …

Single-sign-on authentication is widely deployed in mobile systems, which allows an identity server to authenticate a mobile user and issue her/him with a token, such that the user can access diverse mobile services. To address the single-point-offailure problem, threshold single-sign-on authentication (PbTA) is a feasible solution, where multiple identity servers perform user authentication and token issuance in a threshold way. However, existing PbTA schemes confront critical drawbacks. Specifically, these schemes are vulnerable to perpetual secret leakage attacks (PSLA): an adversary perpetually compromises secrets of identity servers (e.g., secret key shares or credentials) to break security. Besides, they fail to achieve …

Deep Learning (DL) has achieved significant success in socially critical decision-making applications but often exhibits unfair behaviors, raising social concerns. Among these unfair behaviors, individual discrimination-examining inequalities between instance pairs with identical profiles differing only in sensitive attributes such as gender, race, and age-is extremely socially impactful. Existing methods have made significant and commendable efforts in testing individual discrimination before deployment. However, their efficiency and effectiveness remain limited, particularly when evaluating relatively fairer models. It remains unclear which phase of the existing testing framework (global or local) is the primary bottleneck limiting performance. Facing the above issues, we first identify …

Threshold signatures, especially ECDSA, enhance key protection by addressing the single-point-of-failure issue. Threshold signing can be divided into offline and online phases, based on whether the message is required. Schemes with low-cost online phases are referred to as “online-friendly”. Another critical aspect of threshold ECDSA for real-world applications is robustness, which guarantees the successful completion of each signing execution whenever a threshold number t of semi-honest participants is met, even in the presence of misbehaving signatories. The state-of-the-art online-friendly threshold ECDSA with-out robustness was developed by Doerner et al. in S&P'24, requiring only three rounds. Recent work by Wong et …

Recent advancements in multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) have demonstrated success on various cooperative multi-agent tasks. However, current benchmarks often fall short of representing realistic scenarios that demand agents to execute sequential tasks over long temporal horizons while balancing multiple objectives. To address this limitation, we introduce multi-objective SMAC (MOSMAC), a comprehensive MARL benchmark designed to evaluate MARL methods on tasks involving multiple objectives, sequential subtask assignments, and varying temporal horizons. MOSMAC requires agents to tackle a series of interconnected subtasks in StarCraft II while simultaneously optimizing for multiple objectives, including combat, safety, and navigation. Through rigorous evaluation of nine state-of-the-art …

Rotational spectra for hexafluoroacetone imine, the singly substituted 13C isotopologues, and the 15N isotopologue, have been recorded using both cavity and chirped pulse Fourier transform microwave spectrometers. The spectra observed present as being doubled with separations between each pair of transitions being on the order of a few tens of kilohertz which is consistent with a large amplitude motion producing two torsional substates. The observed splitting is most likely due to the combined motions of the CF3 groups, for which the calculated barrier is small. However, no transitions between states could be observed and, similarly, no Coriolis coupling parameters …
