The Genomic Landscape And Prognostic Impact Of Kras, Stk11, And Smarca4 Mutations And Co-Mutations On Survival Outcomes In Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Peter Manolakos

All Dissertations

Non-small lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for 85% of lung cancer cases, and Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog (KRAS), Serine/Threonine Kinase 11 (STK11), and SWI/SNF-related, matrix-associated, actin-dependent regulator of chromatin, subfamily A, member 4 (SMARCA4) mutations and co-mutations have been increasingly recognized for their potential prognostic significance. However, clear knowledge gaps remain regarding which treatments should be selected for patients who present clinically with KRAS/STK11 or KRAS/SMARCA4 co-mutations, as outlined in Chapter 1. Despite significant clinical development advancements in immunotherapy and targeted therapy, a deeper understanding of the influence of these genomic …

Countering Deficit Narratives Through A Blackcrit Lens By Examining Case Studies Of Black College Mathematics Students’ Classroom Experiences, Akhenaton Wilbourn

All Dissertations

This dissertation examines the lived experiences of 11 Black college mathematics students at their predominantly white institution (PWI) through the lens of Black Critical Theory (BlackCrit) to counter deficit narratives about the racial achievement gap (RAG) in mathematics education courses. Deficit narratives often attribute disparities between Black and white students’ mathematical performance to assumed deficiencies in Black students’ abilities rather than systemic inequities, historical marginalization, and ongoing anti-Blackness in educational settings (Cobb & Russell, 2015; Kress, 2021). Using multiple case studies, this study explores how anti-Blackness manifests in mathematics classrooms, how students navigate tensions between multiculturalism, neoliberal educational policies, and …

Preparing Preservice Teachers To Support Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students Through The Implementation Of A High Leverage Practice, Mya Kelley May 2025

Preparing Preservice Teachers To Support Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students Through The Implementation Of A High Leverage Practice, Mya Kelley

All Dissertations

The student population of United States (U.S.) schools is becoming more culturally and linguistically diverse. Similarly, students identifying as culturally and linguistically diverse students represent approximately 54% of students served under the Individuals with Disabilities Act (U.S. Department of Education, 2023). Despite increased ethnic diversity among students, the teacher workforce remains relatively homogenous, with most teachers identifying as White. Consequently, many new teachers feel ill-equipped to implement effective, evidence-based instructional practices to support culturally and linguistically diverse students. To prepare preservice teachers to meet culturally and linguistically diverse students' unique needs, teacher preparation programs must embed culturally relevant pedagogy and …

The Ai Input Class: Constitutional Urgency And Fair Licensing In Ai Copyright Class Actions, Xuan-Thao Nguyen, Elizabeth G. Porter

Articles

The humanities have long been under attack; now Big Tech is eating them for breakfast. Artificial Intelligence is undermining the cultural and constitutional values of human creativity; it is also threatening the livelihoods of the creative working class. Because neither Congress nor regulators can keep pace with AI’s pace of change, class actions have stepped into the breach. In the first wave of such litigation, authors and artists in courts on both coasts claim that AI companies violate intellectual property law when they “train” their systems on copyrighted works.

This Article analyzes what we call “input” AI claims—that is, proposed …

Computationally Guided Liquid Crystal-Based Competitive Binding Sensing Platform For Optical Detection Of Spike Protein, Homa Ghaiedi, Shubham Pandey, Sophia Ezendu, Tibor Szilvasi, Karthik Nayani

Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A liquid crystal (LC)-based sensing platform for the rapid optical detection of SARS-CoV-2 ' s spike protein's receptor binding domain (RBD) domain is introduced. This platform utilizes a thermotropic LC, hosted on metal-cation decorated substrates, onto which the spike protein can competitively bind. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations guide the experiments that reveal a homeotropic-to-planar transition in the LCs upon exposure to SARS-CoV-2 spike-decorated yeast, providing a basis for sensitive virus detection. The sensor's reversibility/specificity is confirmed through antibody-induced orientation recovery of the LCs initial orientation. Strikingly, the sensor can detect approximate to 2000 copies of the spike protein per …

Examining The Role Of Insight, Social Support, And Barriers In Treatment Engagement In Individuals Diagnosed With Psychotic Disorders, Madeline M. Ward, Sarah Hope Lincoln May 2025

Examining The Role Of Insight, Social Support, And Barriers In Treatment Engagement In Individuals Diagnosed With Psychotic Disorders, Madeline M. Ward, Sarah Hope Lincoln

Student Scholarship

Treatment engagement for individuals with psychotic disorders is often low, and engagement is considered critical to improving outcomes and reducing chronicity of the illness. Lack of insight in psychosis has been associated with poor treatment engagement and is considered a core feature of psychotic disorders. One factor that may improve treatment engagement in psychosis, perhaps for individuals with low insight, is social support. Social support may improve treatment engagement by promoting insight or overriding the challenges of engagement related to insight, however, the relationships between insight, social support, and treatment engagement are not clear. The current study hypothesized that greater …

The Little Diagram That Could: Geometric Properties And Statistical Applications Of Persistence Diagrams In Topological Data Analysis, Eugene Kler May 2025

The Little Diagram That Could: Geometric Properties And Statistical Applications Of Persistence Diagrams In Topological Data Analysis, Eugene Kler

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Topological Data Analysis (TDA) is a collection of techniques for data analysis that leverages topological invariants of spaces formed from data points. These methods excel at extracting useful information from noisy or sparse data, making them attractive to many mathematicians, statisticians, and scientists. In this thesis, we explore TDA on three fronts: algebraic foundations, statistical applications, and metric properties. Throughout, the central object of study is the Persistence Diagram (PD), a summary of the changes in homology that occur as one builds simplicial complexes from the data by increasing a parameter.

Two Case Studies Of American Classical Music Patronage In The 1980s And 1990s, Skyler E. Dykes May 2025

Two Case Studies Of American Classical Music Patronage In The 1980s And 1990s, Skyler E. Dykes

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines how changes in the composition of classical music institutions’ funding bases in the 1980s and 1990s shaped their programming priorities and institutional behavior. Through two case studies—one focused on the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra’s “In Unison” program and the other focused on Sybil Harrington’s philanthropic support of the Metropolitan Opera—it explores how individual and institutional funders used legal, financial, and symbolic mechanisms to exert influence over the music presented on symphonic and operatic stages. The first chapter argues that the Saint Louis Symphony’s community engagement efforts in the 1990s were shaped by the priorities of its public …

Correcting Sampling Bias With Privacy-Preserving Synthetic Data: Inference Stability Under The Da-Mi Framework, Hannah Jiang May 2025

Correcting Sampling Bias With Privacy-Preserving Synthetic Data: Inference Stability Under The Da-Mi Framework, Hannah Jiang

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

With the rapid advancement into the Data Age, synthetic data has emerged as a promising avenue for sharing scientific information while protecting the original data. While existing research has primarily focused on generating synthetic data to accurately replicate the characteristics of observed data, we explore the potential of synthetic data to adjust for unrepresentative sampling. This study explores how sampling bias—specifically unbalanced subsets—impacts statistical inference, and whether synthetic data can help correct such bias. Using a Data Augmentation–Multiple Imputation (DA–MI) framework, we generate synthetic datasets from biased samples and evaluate parameter recovery under different correction strategies. Simulations under a Missing …

Analyzing Sleep Staging And Cognitive Transitions Using Fmrl Time Series Analysis, Qingwen Zeng May 2025

Analyzing Sleep Staging And Cognitive Transitions Using Fmrl Time Series Analysis, Qingwen Zeng

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Understanding sleep stages and their underlying cognitive transitions is essential for advancing our knowledge of brain function. While sleep staging has traditionally relied on electroencephalogram (EEG), this study explores the feasibility of classifying sleep stages using only functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data. We investigate the use of Hidden Markov Models (HMM) and Hierarchical Dirichlet Process Hidden Markov Models (HDP-HMM) to capture temporal brain-state dynamics from task-free fMRI recordings. A series of pipelines—including sliding window, two-stage majority filtering, and prototype-based mapping via the Hungarian algorithm—were implemented to align model-inferred states with EEG-defined sleep stages. Among the twelve tested pipelines, the …

Black Scare, Red Scare: The Fbi’S Covert War On Black Radical Activism, Christian E. Maddox May 2025

Black Scare, Red Scare: The Fbi’S Covert War On Black Radical Activism, Christian E. Maddox

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Black resistance movements have always existed to push the envelope and fight to establish political agency and freedom against the state and surrounding institutions that work to dispose of and disenfranchise Black communities across the U.S. The contentious relationship between the U.S. government and leftist movements is a rich and developed ground of scholarship analyzing how repression emerges and evolves across time as a tool against social movements fighting for change. This scholarship however misses how state agencies work to undermine and racially flatten Black radical movements through crafting official, racialized narratives and images that reshape what these movements represent. …
