The Relationship Between Dyslexia And Resilience, Hannah R. Linder, Martina Villa, Daniel Kleinman, Nicole Landi May 2025

The Relationship Between Dyslexia And Resilience, Hannah R. Linder, Martina Villa, Daniel Kleinman, Nicole Landi

Honors Scholar Theses

Studies of students with dyslexia have focused on reading and cognitive skills development and their relationship to academic outcomes. Yet, non-cognitive skills, such as resilience or grit, have been shown to positively contribute to life satisfaction, mental health, and academic success (e.g., Aro et al., 2023; Casali et al., 2023; Hossain et al., 2021; Kortteinen et al., 2020). However, this literature is small and inconclusive, with inconsistent definitions and measures of grit and resilience. Furthermore, prior studies have led to mixed results when investigating levels of resilience amongst people with and without dyslexia (Armfield et al., 2021; Kalka & Lockiewicz, …

From The Eyes Of Latinx Children: Parental Detainment And Deportation In Picture, Middle Grade, And Young Adult Books, Hannah Spinner

Honors Scholar Theses

In the current sociopolitical environment of the United States, detainment and deportation issues are highly prevalent for many Latinx families and have emotional, social, financial, and/or educational ramifications for affected children. However, discussing legal status challenges in educational settings can create spaces for open conversations and promote empathetic classroom communities. Furthermore, bibliotherapy, the therapeutic use of books to combat feelings of loneliness and guide readers through faced challenges (Gomm et al., 2017), could be one usage of these books. This research critically analyzes parental detainment and deportation portrayals from the perspective of a main Latinx character in 20 PreK-12th grade …

An Instruction Manipulation Of A Set For Variability Task, Erin Oconnor, Maria Jose Macias Zuniga, Hannah Ferguson, Kelly Mahaffy, Nicole Landi

Honors Scholar Theses

In this study, we conducted an instructional manipulation of a reading-related task called the set for variability (SFV). This task measures phonological awareness and the degree to which students automatically access printed word forms by having them correct audibly mispronounced words. We hypothesized that children who received instructions that provided a reading context to the mispronunciations would perform better than the children who received instructions not related to reading. We also conducted an exploratory items analysis to see if performance would differ as a function of familiarity (operationalized as word frequency). Participants (n=34) were children who attend specialized schools for …

Many high school students are not aware of IS and its effects and may perform poorly in school due to chronic self-doubt and a poor sense of belonging. However, when students learn coping strategies to overcome IS, they can improve their well-being and academic growth. To address this issue, I created a two-day lesson for sophomore and junior students who are part of the GEAR-UP program at Seaside High School in …

Building Language Enrichment Activities For Parents Of Eld Students, Lizbeth Ponce-Alcantar

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Parents of elementary school children learning a second language often lack the skills to support language improvement at home effectively. Without a strong foundation in language development, children may struggle to improve their language skills. When parents learn at-home activities to enrich their child’s language enhancement, children can benefit by increasing communication and building social relationships. Therefore, I have created a one-session curriculum on how parents can build and maintain their child’s language with at-home activities for parents of English learners at Washington Elementary School in San Jose, California.

Developing Self-Regulation Skills In Early Childhood, Elizabeth Alvarez May 2025

Developing Self-Regulation Skills In Early Childhood, Elizabeth Alvarez

To address this issue, I created a three-day lesson for students in a kindergarten classroom at Sherwood Elementary in Salinas, California.

Teaching Social Emotional Skills In Early Childhood, Shawni M. Hughes

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Children in early childhood may not have yet fully developed social-emotional skills around self-regulation. Without the ability to self-regulate, children will act out or misbehave in order to communicate their needs or express their feelings. Children that are taught social-emotional skills may be able to express their feelings in developmentally appropriate ways, exhibit fewer externalized behaviors, develop stronger social relationships, experience decreased emotional stress, and present better self-confidence. In order to promote social-emotional development, I created a three-day lesson for preschoolers at the Monterey Peninsula College Early Childhood Education Lab School in Monterey, California.

This creates challenges because if a child is not receiving extra support at home- whether due to parents' beliefs about their responsibility for education, their relationship with teachers, or barriers they may face, such as language- it can lead to gaps in the child’s educational success and may cause them to struggle in their academic journey. This project's purpose and focus are to assist parents and teachers in understanding the different implications of parent involvement. …
