Peninsula Medical School

Background: In the UK, gallbladder specimens are routinely sent for histological examination to exclude incidental gallbladder cancer (iGBC) and other clinically relevant pathology. Although rare, gallbladder cancer requires early detection to improve outcomes. Existing risk stratification tools miss cases or are not tailored to the UK population. Predicting Incidental Gallbladder Cancer (P-iGBC) is an adaptive, multicentre, cross-sectional, trainee-led collaborative study designed to develop a diagnostic score to stratify iGBC risk in adult cholecystectomy. This feasibility phase, fP-iGBC, evaluates the methods and procedures of the overall study, ensuring its robustness and practicality before full-scale implementation. Methods: fP-iGBC comprises an internal pilot …

The conjugation of small ubiquitin-like modifiers (SUMO) to target proteins, known as SUMOylation, plays a crucial role in regulating protein homeostasis, activity, interaction with other proteins, and subcellular localization. Loss of SUMOylation in nongrowing oocytes by conditional deletion of the E2 SUMO conjugating enzyme, Ube2i, at the primordial follicle stage leads to female sterility due to complex changes in oocyte development, including altered folliculogenesis, defective meiotic progression, and premature loss of the ovarian reserve. In this study, proteomics was used to compare control and Ube2i conditional knockout ovaries during the first wave of folliculogenesis to identify key differences that may …

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) represents a major technological advancement in the last decade and enables the analysis of complex data to help physicians in disease diagnosis and treatment of patients with greater efficiency and accuracy. This study aims to evaluate awareness, perceptions, and acceptance of AI technology in healthcare among pilgrims with a focus on how these factors relate to education levels. Methods: A general population based cross-sectional study was conducted in Makkah region included 457 adults aged 18 and above. Data was collected through structured questionnaire. Data analysis employed descriptive statistics and chi-square tests with significance at p<0.05. Results: The study population was predominantly aged 18-30 years (55.8%), followed by those aged ≥50 years (22.3%) and 31-49 years (21.9%). Most participants were female (69.6%), and 82.3% were Saudi nationals. While 78.6% were familiar with artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, only 42.7% believed AI could surpass traditional physicians in diagnosis and treatment. However, 85.1% thought AI could enhance administrative tasks. Concerns about trusting AI with patient care were notable, with 73.7% expressing doubts. Participants with lower education levels were significantly more likely to believe AI would outperform physicians in diagnosis (53.7% vs. 36.6%, p < 0.05) and professionalism (42% vs. 30.2%, p < 0.05). Conversely, those with higher education were more concerned about trusting AI with patient lives (77.3% vs. 67.3%, p < 0.05). Conclusion: While most participants recognize AI’s potential in healthcare, many doubt it might outperform physicians Yet support its use during Hajj and Umrah.

Does Shakespeare Have A Death Wish?, Alyssa Marie Cordero May 2025

Does Shakespeare Have A Death Wish?, Alyssa Marie Cordero

COD Library Student Research and Award Symposium

During their reign, both King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I were ruthless in persecuting and executing those who publicly and privately challenged their legitimacy - such opposition was seen not only as treason to the British monarchy but as defiance of the divine will of God. Violence, bloodshed, and cruelty were a norm and custom in Tudor England. Although he began his career catering to the audiences' bloodthirsty appetite, William Shakespeare wrote his later plays exploring the human psyche, the gendered experiences of women, and subtle political criticisms. With the looming threat of tyranny in Julius Caesar to the …

Enhancing Management Of Hospitalized Patients With Opioid Withdrawal, Christine Aliory

Group: Northern Arizona University School of Nursing, DNP Doctoral Papers

Opioid use disorder (OUD) impacts over 1.2 million people in the United States. This population suffers from multiple comorbidities which can result in the need for hospitalization. Managing opioid withdrawal in hospitalized patients is challenging. Assessment tools like the Clinical Opioid Withdrawal Scale (COWS) help healthcare providers determine appropriate interventions to alleviate withdrawal symptoms for these patients. This quality improvement project aimed to decrease the number of incidents of violent behaviors and/or patients leaving the hospital against medical advice (AMA) during opioid withdrawal and enhance nurses’ ability to perform the COWS assessment. Organizational data from a 402-bed acute care hospital …

Amazigh Lexical Substrate In Tunisian Derja: An Outcome Of Linguistic Contact On Youtube And Facebook, Soubeika Bahri

Journal of Amazigh Studies

Despite the extensive discussion of the structural and lexical impact of Tamazight on North African spoken varieties in Morocco, Algeria, and Libya (Berkai 4-14; Souag 2018, 192-200; Faizi 29-39; Bensoukas and Boudlal 179-21; Zellou 1-13), little is known about the linguistic contact outcome between the Tunisian spoken variety (henceforth, Ettounsi or Tunisian Derja) and Tamazight. In this article, we present and analyze Amazigh linguistic substrate examples in the lexicon of Ettounsi. Contact-induced change (Lafkioui 51-93; Thomason 339-46; Heine and Kuteva, 529-72) and language contact on YouTube (Garley, 77-106), along with the method of computer-mediated discourse (Androutsopoulos, 419-438), offer …

‘Amazigh Literary Space’: Intersection And Hybridity Across Languages And Media, Daniela Merolla May 2025

‘Amazigh Literary Space’: Intersection And Hybridity Across Languages And Media, Daniela Merolla

Journal of Amazigh Studies

My contribution will focus on multilingualism and multimedia in the ‘Amazigh literary and cinematographic space’ (Merolla De l’art, “Amazigh/Berber Literature”). Examining this notion coined in the 1990’s (Merolla “Gender and Community”) allows us to reflect on ongoing debates regarding North African literatures in postcolonial contexts. It also helps to see that Amazigh/Berber literature solely defined as Amazigh-language production tends to isolate works and performances that engage with multiple languages and literary traditions, cultural intersections, and hybridization in North Africa and its diasporas. The discussion is contextualized within the historical development of what is sometimes referred to as the “North …

“What Ship Will Bear Me Ever Back”: Woundedness And The Western Sea, Janet Brennan Croft May 2025

“What Ship Will Bear Me Ever Back”: Woundedness And The Western Sea, Janet Brennan Croft

Journal of Tolkien Research

The sea journey into the West is a multi-faceted symbol-system in Tolkien’s works. It is connected with healing, loss, and the numinous. A character may sail to find peace, to lay down burdens, or to challenge the gods or to beg their help. I will be considering both Tolkien’s literary inspirations in medieval and Arthurian literature, and the personal resonances arising from the significant sea voyages (to England as a young child, and to and from France during the Great War) which twice upended his life.

The Future Of The Footwear Industry: Bibliometric And Systematic Analysis Of Literature From 2018 To 2023, Miguel Terroso, Adriana Amorim, Ivo Rodrigues May 2025

The Future Of The Footwear Industry: Bibliometric And Systematic Analysis Of Literature From 2018 To 2023, Miguel Terroso, Adriana Amorim, Ivo Rodrigues

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

The footwear industry in Portugal is one of the sectors with the greatest representation in national exports and a sector of high importance for the country's economy. Although it is a mechanized industry, it is still very dependent on human labour and for which it is increasingly difficult to attract talent and captivate younger generations, putting this sector in danger in terms of its continuity. The digitalization of the footwear industry could be one of the alternatives to solve this problem, enabling cost reduction, greater autonomy, and production flexibility, as well as a closer approach to the demands of customers …

Memories As Materialized Data For Designing Emotionally Durable Handbags, Jaana Päeva May 2025

Memories As Materialized Data For Designing Emotionally Durable Handbags, Jaana Päeva

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

We live in a world where consumption often exceeds actual human needs, with consequences reflected in both negative environmental impacts and shifts in cultural values. This article examines how the use of memory-based datasets in the design process can help create meaningful and emotionally durable objects that encourage the development of speculative future visions. Drawing on the theories of emotional and sustainable design, the study focuses on how data that reflects personal narratives and cultural identities can shape new design principles and expand creative methods. The article introduces a project held in the Estonian Academy of Arts by Jaana Päeva, …

Richness And Ambiguity: Mapping Artificial Intelligence Labels In Human-Ai Collaboration Research, Fabio Antonio Figoli, Alessandra Facchin, Beatrice Gobbo, Francesca Mattioli

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Artificial intelligence has rapidly gained prominence across industries and academia. However, its swift diffusion, coupled with the interdisciplinary nature of related studies, has resulted in fragmented literature, making it challenging to align diverse perspectives under shared and identifiable research trajectories. This challenge became evident while working with data from a systematic literature review we previously conducted on artificial intelligence in human-AI collaboration studies within design-related fields. Building upon this dataset, we examined how researchers label artificial intelligence in their work, recognising terminology as a central factor contributing to this fragmentation. Through an exploratory study, we identified 79 unique labels, categorising …

Craftsman Gaze Data Study To Enhance Craft Material Selection And Facilitate Knowledge Transfer, Catherine Schwarz, Jean-François Bassereau, Jenny Faucheu

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Material selection methods and tools are mainly quantitative multicriteria based and cater essentially to engineering material selection requirements. However, shifts in material sourcing and manufacturing as well as data processing tend to lean towards tailored fabrication models in which the material leads the design. This highlights emerging opportunities and requirements in material selection, including the need to consider the situation of the person making the assessment, which has come to the forefront of material selection. Designers and researchers have already provided valuable research to enhance material selection on a sensorial basis. However, little has been recommended for material selection based …
