Developing A Dashboard To Facilitate Exploration Of Maude Studies, Eric Yang, Yuheng Shi, Yang Gong
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
The MAUDE database is increasingly used for research. However, the MAUDE publications are scattered in literature databases with fragmented topics, hindering researchers' exploration and identification. To address this issue and enhance the visibility of MAUDE topics in literature, we followed the Gestalt data visualization principles, utilizing the PubMed API and Google Looker Studio to extract, organize, and visualize literature pertinent to MAUDE. The 5-section dashboard exhibits publication trends, cross-filtered publications and authors, geographical distribution of authors and publishers, article scorecards, and donut graphs representing percentages concerning affiliations, journals, publication types, and MeSH terms. This effort created an intuitive, user-friendly dashboard …
From Starfleet To Space Law: Science Fiction And The Future Of Colonization Law, Abigail Coffey
From Starfleet To Space Law: Science Fiction And The Future Of Colonization Law, Abigail Coffey
Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law
As humanity approaches the threshold of space colonization, legal scholars and policymakers are faced with unprecedented challenges in crafting frameworks that govern off-Earth settlements. This article explores how science fiction—a genre long preoccupied with the social, legal, and ethical dimensions of space habitation—can serve as a vital resource for shaping contemporary space law. Drawing on narratives from the minds of George Lucas, Robert Heinlein, Frank Herbert, and more, this article examines how science fiction anticipates legal dilemmas surrounding sovereignty, privatization, environmental stewardship, and human rights in extraterrestrial contexts. By analyzing these fictional projections, this article argues for a proactive, imaginative …
Hybrids As Undeserving And The Enduring Legacy Of Eugenics In Modern Conservation Policies, Maria-Vittoria Carminati, Andrew Martin
Hybrids As Undeserving And The Enduring Legacy Of Eugenics In Modern Conservation Policies, Maria-Vittoria Carminati, Andrew Martin
Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law
This article explores the overlooked legacy of eugenics at the root of modern conservation, tracing how early conservationists—many of whom were also vocal eugenicists—shaped our definitions of species, purity, and protection. By examining the deep entanglement of racialized science and environmental policy, I argue that hybrids have been systematically excluded from protection, not because of well-founded scientific reasoning, but because of a century-old ideology rooted in the fear of impurity. It's time for conservation to evolve beyond these outdated frameworks and embrace a future-forward, adaptationist approach—one that recognizes hybrids not as mistakes, but as natural responses to a changing world …
Leadership In Quality Improvement In Academic Children’S Hospitals, Tiffany Enriquez
Leadership In Quality Improvement In Academic Children’S Hospitals, Tiffany Enriquez
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
To orient children’s academic leaders to basic competency in quality improvement (QI) practices, academic children’s hospitals must overcome leadership diversity deficits and prepare for QI practice readiness. Leadership is a key factor in enhancing patients’ care outcomes, though practice models do not allow for organizational advancements. The distributed leadership (DL) theory on leadership applies in contexts where the leadership role in QI is not solely centralized to a single individual but is decentralized and spread to include all parties involved. This paper sought to determine the effects of leadership on QI in children’s hospitals and further establish the best leadership …

Navigating The Labyrinth: Transition Planning Process For Reintegration Of Inmates With Chronic Illnesses And Disabilities, Courtney Ashley Dean
Navigating The Labyrinth: Transition Planning Process For Reintegration Of Inmates With Chronic Illnesses And Disabilities, Courtney Ashley Dean
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Most offenders face challenges with successfully reintegrating, especially those living with chronic illness and/or disabilities. Transition interventions employed by mental health professionals are not universal and vary from facility to facility. While recidivism, community stigmatization, reoffending, and reconviction are explored in extant literature, little has been done to examine the difficulties faced by the professionals who work with this population as they get ready to plan for transitioning this disenfranchised group back into society. This study is an exploration of the role of professional counselors in facilitating successful transition planning for inmates living with chronic illnesses and/or disabilities. Guided by …

Abstract
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a massive health concern in the Spanish-speaking community. There is a high rate IPV, worsening by factors such as language barriers, cultural stigma, and the constant fear of deportation. Resent data underscores the need for standardized IPV screening and trauma-informed care, thus supporting early recognition and intervention. The aim of this Quality Improvement (QI) project is to increase IPV detection rate by 25% from March 10, 2025, to April 15, 2025, in an San Francisco community clinic using an electronic tool called a HITS (Hurt, Insult, Threaten, Scream) and by trauma-informed staff training. Methods …

Background/ Purpose: There is limited understanding of how the sensory deficits associated with lower limb amputation (LLA) impact mobility during daily life. As a first step to developing this understanding, the aim of this study was to determine to what extent people with LLA can identify differences in commonly encountered walking surfaces beneath their feet. We hypothesized that people with LLA would demonstrate a poorer ability to discriminate between different surfaces than people without an amputation, and that discrimination ability would be surface characteristic-specific; discrimination would be poor for roughness discrimination due to the lack of plantar sensation in the …

Effects Of Altered Somatosensory Input On Gait Kinetics And Kinematics Via Different Footwear In Individuals With Chronic Post-Stroke Hemiparesis, Daniela Casillas, Lesley Ruiz
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Purpose/Hypothesis: Individuals with post-stroke hemiparesis walk with significant asymmetries, leading to slow, effortful walking, and a high risk of falls. One contributing factor is altered sensation on the plantar surface. Studies examining altered somatosensory input via insoles, vibration and other tactile stimuli observed improvements in hemiparesis gait. This study investigates whether altering somatosensory input through different footwear can affect kinetics, kinematics and muscle activity during walking post-stroke. We hypothesized the barefoot conditions would have increased dorsiflexion (heel-strike, swing), increased plantarflexion during toe-off, increased muscle activity and kinetics, compared to memory foam conditions.
Participants: 13 individuals with chronic post-stroke hemiparesis (4F/9M, …

In school settings, occupational therapists (OTs) aim to empower children to thrive as students and as social beings through targeted interventions and educational support for parents and teachers. In private school settings, limited access to occupational therapy services may impact teachers' ability to implement SEL strategies effectively. This capstone project addressed gaps in teachers' knowledge and confidence in applying the Zones of Regulation SEL curriculum …
High Dynamic Range Actively Quenched Silicon-Germanium Single-Photon Avalanche Diodes, Abraham Castaneda
High Dynamic Range Actively Quenched Silicon-Germanium Single-Photon Avalanche Diodes, Abraham Castaneda
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) are solid-state devices capable of providing large current pulses in the milliampere range in response to incident photons. The large gain inherent to SPADs makes them a popular technology for photon-counting applications, but their operation can be hindered by long recharge times, which necessitates the use of active quenching to reduce dead times and increase detection rates. For the prompt gamma/neutron radiation experiments conducted at the Nevada National Security Site, photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) have been the primary photodetector of choice, but their continued use is expected to dwindle as it becomes increasingly difficult to source quality …

It attempted to join and contribute to the more significant, historical, and extant conversations and literature on Black-American males and education, as well as their successes and failures. This dissertation adds to the dearth of literature on the intersection of Black-American, Muslim males, and education, and using jazz as an epistemological way of navigating and organizing the content, the research works to uncover, locate, and define an Islamic consciousness. While negating racist histories concomitant with the American narrative …
Piloting The Inclusion Of Dollar Stores In The Modified Retail Food Environment Index (Mrfei) In Urban Clark County, Nevada, Tiana T. Tu
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Food insecurity is the condition of having limited or uncertain access to adequate food. It contributes to poor diet-related health outcomes which are in turn influenced by the food environment. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) developed the Modified Retail Food Environment Index (mRFEI) to characterize food environments by measuring the proportion of healthy and non-healthy retailers. The CDC mRFEI considers a variety of establishments but fails to include dollar stores, which contribute to the food environment by offering food and, in some cases, fresh produce. This study proposed an “expanded mRFEI” that modified the CDC mRFEI methodology …

Quick And Easy Method For The Determination Of Cocaine And Six Metabolites In Postmortem Hair, Samantha C. Mulkeen
Student Theses
Hair testing is increasing in popularity in toxicology because of its long window of detection and ease of collection and sample storage. However, it has its limitations largely due to external contamination of drugs. In particular, cocaine (COC) is a common offender of this as it has several routes of consumption. Analyzing metabolites of COC may be the key to distinguishing between consumption and external contamination. The aim of the present study was to develop a quick, easy, and sensitive method for the detection and quantification of COC, benzoylecgonine (BE), norcocaine (NCOC), cocaethylene (CE), anhydroecgonine methyl ester (AEME), meta-hydroxy-cocaine (m-OH-COC), …

The study used a qualitative research design to explore the academic and organizational challenges faced by secondary school students with ADHD, specifically examining the knowledge, perceptions, and self-efficacy of secondary educators regarding ADHD strategies and 504 plan accommodations. Semi-structured interviews were conducted via Zoom with 11 educators from …

Masters Theses, 2020-current
Neuropsychological tests were developed primarily for Westernized, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic (WEIRD) populations (Henrich, 2020; Fernández & Abe, 2018). According to the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology (AACN) Relevance 2050 Initiative project, approximately sixty percent of Americans will be deemed unsuitable for neuropsychological testing because test norms are primarily based on European Americans who speak English (AACN, 2015). To aid in effective cross-cultural neuropsychological assessment, The Multicultural Neuropsychological Scale (MUNS; Fernández et al., 2018) was developed to be easily translatable to various languages. The MUNS is a 40-minute neuropsychological test battery that examines cognitive abilities such as reading fluency, …
