On-Demand Heterogeneous Drone Delivery Problem, Xupeng Wen, Zhiguang Cao, Shu Xu, Dapeng Ren, Guohua Wu, Yaoxin Wu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In the on-demand problem domain, actual demand frequently deviates from the expected demand. This paper intricately delves into the exploration of on-demand heterogeneous multi-drone routing problem (ODHDRP), in which a transport drone carries multiple terminal drones to subregions in the first echelon, and the terminal drones deliver parcels during a flight trip to customers with demands in subregions to maintain economies of scale in the second echelon. We formulate the customer demands using a normal distribution, and exploit a reliability model of customer demands with chance constraints. To solve the ODHDRP efficiently, we propose a hybrid iterative optimisation heuristic (HIOH) …

Moditector: Module-Directed Testing For Autonomous Driving Systems, Renzhi Wang, Mingfei Cheng, Xiaofei Xie, Yuan Zhou, Lei Ma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Testing Autonomous Driving Systems (ADSs) is crucial for ensuring their safety, reliability, and performance. Despite numerous testing methods available that can generate diverse and challenging scenarios to uncover potential vulnerabilities, these methods often treat ADS as a black-box, primarily focusing on identifying system-level failures like collisions or near-misses without pinpointing the specific modules responsible for these failures. This lack of root causes understanding for the failures hinders effective debugging and subsequent system repair. Furthermore, current approaches often fall short in generating violations that adequately test the individual modules of an ADS from a system-level perspective, such as perception, prediction, planning, …

Demystifying Memorization In Llm-Based Program Repair Via A General Hypothesis Testing Framework, Jiaolong Kong, Xiaofei Xie, Shangqing Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Large Language Models (LLMs) have achieved remarkable success in various applications, particularly in code-related tasks such as code generation and program repair, setting new performance benchmarks. However, the extensive use of large training corpora raises concerns about whether these achievements stem from genuine understanding or mere memorization of training data—a question often overlooked in current research. This paper aims to study the memorization issue within LLM-based program repair by investigating whether the correct patches generated by LLMs are the result of memorization. The key challenge lies in the absence of ground truth for confirming memorization, leading to various ad-hoc methods …

Collaborative Tree Search For Enhancing Embodied Multi-Agent Collaboration, Lizheng Zu, Lin Lin, Song Fu, Na Zhao, Pan Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Embodied agents based on large language models (LLMs) face significant challenges in collaborative tasks, requiring effective communication and reasonable division of labor to ensure efficient and correct task completion. Previous approaches with simple communication patterns carry erroneous or incoherent agent actions, which can lead to additional risks. To address these problems, we propose Cooperative Tree Search (CoTS), a framework designed to significantly improve collaborative planning and task execution efficiency among embodied agents. CoTS guides multi-agents to discuss long-term strategic plans within a modified Monte Carlo tree, searching along LLMdriven reward functions to provide a more thoughtful and promising approach to …

Modfinity: Unsupervised Domain Adaptation With Multimodal Information Flow Intertwining, Shanglin Liu, Jianming Lv, Jingdan Kang, Huaidong Zhang, Zequan Liang, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multimodal unsupervised domain adaptation leverages unlabeled data in the target domain to enhance multimodal systems continuously. While current state-of-the-art methods encourage interaction between sub-models of different modalities through pseudo-labeling and feature-level exchange, varying sample quality across modalities can lead to the propagation of inaccurate information, resulting in error accumulation. To address this, we propose Modal-Affinity Multimodal Domain Adaptation (MODfinity), a method that dynamically manages multimodal information flow through fine-grained control over teacher model selection, guiding information intertwining at both feature and label levels. By treating labels as an independent modality, MODfinity enables balanced performance assessment across modalities, employing a novel …

A Knowledge Enhanced Large Language Model For Bug Localization, Yue Li, Bohan Liu, Ting Zhang, Zhiqi Wang, David Lo, Lanxin Yang, Jun Lyu, He Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A significant number of bug reports are generated every day as software systems continue to develop. Large Language Models (LLMs) have been used to correlate bug reports with source code to locate bugs automatically. The existing research has shown that LLMs are effective for bug localization and can increase software development efficiency. However, these studies still have two limitations. First, these models fail to capture context information about bug reports and source code. Second, these models are unable to understand the domain-specific expertise inherent to particular projects, such as version information in projects that are composed of alphanumeric characters without …

Deepvec: State-Vector Aware Test Case Selection For Enhancing Recurrent Neural Network, Zhonghao Jiang, Meng Yan, Li Huang, Weifeng Sun, Chao Liu, Song Sun, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Deep Neural Networks (DNN) have realized significant achievements across various application domains. There is no doubt that testing and enhancing a pre-trained DNN that has been deployed in an application scenario is crucial, because it can reduce the failures of the DNN. DNN-driven software testing and enhancement require large amounts of labeled data. The high cost and inefficiency caused by the large volume of data of manual labeling, and the time consumption of testing all cases in real scenarios are unacceptable. Therefore, test case selection technologies are proposed to reduce the time cost by selecting and only labeling representative test …

Collision Kinematics For Fast Positron Impact Ionization Of Argon, Robert D. Dubois, Károly Tőkési Jun 2025

Collision Kinematics For Fast Positron Impact Ionization Of Argon, Robert D. Dubois, Károly Tőkési

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Classical trajectory Monte Carlo calculations for 1 keV positron impact ionization of argon are presented. A combination of energy-weighted triple differential cross-sections is shown to provide good to excellent agreement compared with experimental data, depending on the ejected electron azimuthal angular acceptance range used to define in-plane scattering. For ejected electron energies less than 100 eV, information about the influence of pre- (the impact parameter) and post-(the direction of scattering) collision kinematics on the triple differential level is obtained. An overall picture of these kinematic properties is also presented for single differential cross-sections as a function of ejected electron energy …

Biochar is a charcoal-like substance made by the pyrolysis of organic material from agricultural and forestry waste. While biochar is well documented for altering soil physicochemical conditions, few studies have investigated its possible effects on the management of arthropod pests. Tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta) and fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda, FAW) are specialist and generalist insect herbivores respectively, that can cause significant defoliation in natural and agricultural ecosystems. In this study, we examined whether walnut shell biochar can affect growth and development of these herbivores. Specifically, we investigated how biochar influences parameters such as mass gain, length …

Investigation Of Retention And Dehydration Of Preformed Particle Gel For Conformance Control In Fractured Carbonates, Abdulaziz A. Almakimi, Abdullah O. Almansour, Junchen Liu, Baojun Bai, Ibnelwaleed A. Hussein

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Preformed particle gel (PPG) treatment has proved to be among the most effective methods to reduce excessive water production in fractured reservoirs. The blocking ability of PPGs to fractures or fracture-like features is highly dependent on injected gel properties and volume. Gel dehydration during extrusion through fracture is common and has a considerable effect on gel properties, transport, and plugging efficiency. As the gel particles propagate through the fracture, continuous dehydration is often associated and causes the gel to concentrate and require high-pressure gradients to move. Dehydration might be desirable to a certain limit because it can help to form …

Supporting Academic Parents: The Effects Of Dependent Care Policies On Research Productivity Trends, Drake Van Egdom, Matthew M. Piszczek, Christiane Spitzmueller, Peggy Lindner, Aaron Clauset

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

On average, women faculty take on more childcare responsibilities, posing barriers to career success. Work-family policies represent one solution for advancing gender equity in academia as they support parents after childbirth with benefits for children, employees, and organizations. We contribute to understanding how the availability and use of dependent care policies (paid parental leave and childcare benefits) relate to long-term research productivity trends. Based on the work-home resources model, we theorize that policy availability provides contextual resources and policy use provides personal resources, leading to improvements in an individual's research productivity after they have a child. We also examine potential …

Extreme hypertriglyceridemia, defined as triglyceride (TG) levels ≥1000 mg/dL, is almost always indicative of chylomicronemia. The current diagnostic approach categorizes individuals with chylomicronemia into familial chylomicronemia syndrome (FCS; prevalence 1-10 per million), caused by the biallelic combination of pathogenic variants that impair the lipolytic action of lipoprotein lipase (LPL), or multifactorial chylomicronemia syndrome (MCS, 1 in 500). A pragmatic framework should emphasize the severity of the phenotype and the risk of complications. Therefore, we endorse the term "persistent chylomicronemia" defined as TG ≥1000 mg/dL in more than half of the measurements to encompass patients with the highest risk for pancreatitis, …

An extensive library of symptom inventories has been developed over time to measure clinical symptoms of traumatic brain injury (TBI), but this variety has led to several long-standing issues. Most notably, results drawn from different settings and studies are not comparable. This creates a fundamental problem in TBI diagnostics and outcome prediction, namely that it is not possible to equate results drawn from distinct tools and symptom inventories. Here, we present an approach using semantic textual similarity (STS) to link symptoms and scores across previously incongruous symptom inventories by ranking item text similarities according to their conceptual likeness. We tested …

Background: The benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) for ampullary adenocarcinoma is unclear. The Hidden Genome model classifies prognostic subtypes with greater accuracy than standard histologic classification (intestinal [INT] vs pancreatobiliary [PB]), but its predictive capacity to guide the use of AC remains unstudied.

Methods: We applied the Hidden Genome model to an international cohort of 183 patients with resected ampullary adenocarcinoma who underwent genomic sequencing. The model quantified the predicted cell of origin (colorectal vs pancreas/distal bile duct) in all specimens. Overall survival (OS) was compared using Kaplan-Meier estimates, stratified by AC use versus surgery alone (SA).

Results: Most patients …

It has been 40 years since the first discovery of the important human pathogen, Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). Eradication of the infection continues to pose significant challenges in part because of the global increase in antibiotic resistance. Generally, the “addition” strategy has failed to deliver the desired results for more than a short period and often contributed to the increase in the prevalence of resistant strains. As such, optimization of each component of the treatment strategy has become an increasingly critical focus of research. In this study, we summarized the evolution of H. pylori eradication regimens and the …

Bladder cancer accounts for 4 % of cancer diagnoses in the US. Current treatments primarily involve trans-urethral resection of bladder tumors (TURBT) and immunotherapy with Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG). Despite the efficacy of TURBT, issues with residual tumors persist. We chose to utilize Cell Painting to screen a set of 244 flavonoid compounds for bladder cancer cell toxicity. Using multiparametric high content analysis termed SPACe, we discover promising candidates underscoring the potential of flavonoids in targeting bladder cancer cells and elucidating their mechanisms of action. Notably, compounds such as xanthohumol show promise in reducing cancer cell viability by altering lipid metabolism. …

Risk factors are associated with social determinants of health (SDoH), but have never been demonstrated in a clinical pediatric cardiology cohort. This report details the first use of a remotely deployed, previsit, self-administered electronic survey for the ascertainment of SDoH in youth referred to pediatric cardiology. We hypothesized that patients referred for atherosclerotic risk factors would have higher risk of SDoH factors.

Study design: SDoH were assessed using validated instruments from the PRAPARE toolkit and the Accountable Health Communities Health-Related Social Needs Screening Tool automatically deployed days before a scheduled visit in …

Objective: The long-term durability of improvements in functional mobility and musculoskeletal pain for adolescents after metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is unknown.

Methods: We used the Teen-Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery (Teen-LABS) study to determine the change in mobility and pain among adolescents who underwent MBS. From standardized 400-m walk tests, we analyzed walk time, heart rate (HR) parameters, and musculoskeletal pain.

Results: The mean walk time improved from 383 s (95% CI: 368-399) prior to surgery to 351 s (95% CI: 330-372) by 6 years. The mean resting HR was 90 beats per minute (bpm; 95% CI: 87-93) preoperatively …

Importance: Patients undergoing external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) for head and neck cancer (HNC) often experience adverse effects that require substantial caregiving. The burdens of caregiving can impact caregiver employment and mental health over time, yet this topic remains underexplored.

Objective: To examine the associations between caregiving for patients with HNC who undergo EBRT and caregiver stress, employment status, and psychological distress.

Design, setting, and participants: This was a secondary analysis of data from a longitudinal survey study that surveyed caregivers at baseline (ie, at initiation of EBRT) and at 4-month and 12-month follow-ups. The study was conducted at 2 …
